Duodecim annorum erat Manasses cum regnare cœpisset,Manasseh was twelve years old when he had begun to reign,et quinquaginta quinque annis regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for fifty-five years in Jerusalem.

Fecit autem malum coram Domino,But he did evil before the Lord, juxta abominationes gentium quas subvertit Dominus coram filiis Israël:in accord with all the abominations of the nations which the Lord overturned before the sons of Israel.

et conversus instauravit excelsa quæ demolitus fuerat Ezechias pater ejus:And turning away, he repaired the high places, which had been demolished by his father, construxitque aras Baalim,Hezekiah. And he constructed altars to the Baals,et fecit lucos, and made sacred groves.et adoravit omnem militiam cæli,And he adored the entire army of heaven,et coluit eam.and he served them.

Ædificavit quoque altaria in domo Domini,Also, he built altars in the house of the Lord,de qua dixerat Dominus:about which the Lord had said,In Jerusalem erit nomen meum in æternum.“My name shall be in Jerusalem forever.”

Ædificavit autem ea cuncto exercitui cæli in duobus atriis domus Domini. But he built these for the entire army of heaven, in the two courts of the house of the Lord.

Transireque fecit filios suos per ignem in valle Benennom:And he caused his sons to pass through fire in the Valley of the son of Hinnom.observabat somnia,He observed dreams, sectabatur auguria, followed divinations, maleficis artibus inserviebat, served the occult arts, habebat secum magoshad with him magicians and enchanters,et incantatores, and worked many evils before the Lord, multaque mala operatus est coram Domino ut irritaret eum.so that he provoked him.

Sculptile quoqueAlso,et conflatile signum posuit in domo Dei,he set up a graven image and molten statue in the house of God,de qua locutus est Deus ad David, about which God said to David,et ad Salomonem filium ejus, and to his son Solomon:dicens:“In this house,In domo hac,and in Jerusalem,et in Jerusalem quam elegi de cunctis tribubus Israël,which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, ponam nomen meum in sempiternum.I will place my name forever.

Et moveri non faciam pedem Israël de terra quam tradidi patribus eorum:And I will not cause the foot of Israel to be moved from the land which I delivered to their fathers.ita dumtaxat si custodierint facere quæ præcepi eis,Yet this is so,cunctamque legem, only if they will take care to do what I have instructed them,et cæremonias atque judicia,by the hand of Moses, per manum Moysi.with the entire law and the ceremonies and the judgments.”

Igitur Manasses seduxit Judam,And so Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,et habitatores Jerusalem,so that they did evil,ut facerent malum super omnes gentes quas subverterat Dominus a facie filiorum Israël.more so than all the nations which the Lord had overturned before the face of the sons of Israel.

Locutusque est Dominus ad eum,And the Lord spoke to himet ad populum illius, and to his people,et attendere noluerunt.but they were not willing to pay attention.

Idcirco superinduxit eis principes exercitus regis Assyriorum:Therefore, he led over them the leaders of the army of the king of the Assyrians.ceperuntque Manassen,And they captured Manasseh,et vinctum catenis atque compedibus duxerunt in Babylonem.and they led him, bound with chains and fetters, to Babylon.

Qui postquam coangustatus est,And after this, being in great anguish, oravit Dominum Deum suum:he prayed to the Lord his God.et egit pœnitentiam valde coram Deo patrum suorum. And he did penance greatly before the God of his fathers.

Deprecatusque est eum,And he petitioned and begged him intently.et obsecravit intente:And he heeded his prayer,et exaudivit orationem ejus, and led him back to Jerusalem, reduxitque eum Jerusalem in regnum suum, into his kingdom.et cognovit Manasses quod Dominus ipse esset Deus. And Manasseh realized that the Lord himself was God.

Post hæc ædificavit murum extra civitatem David ad occidentem Gihon in convalle,After these things, he built a wall outside the City of David, to the west of Gihon,ab introitu portæ piscium per circuitum usque ad Ophel,at the steep valley, from the entrance to the fish gate,et exaltavit illum vehementer:circling around as far as Ophel.constituitque principes exercitus in cunctis civitatibus Juda munitis:And he raised it up greatly. And he appointed leaders of the army in all the fortified cities of Judah.

et abstulit deos alienos,And he took away the foreign gods,et simulacrum de domo Domini:and the idol from the house of the Lord, aras quoque, and also the altars which he had made on the mount of the house of the Lordquas fecerat in monte domus Domini et in Jerusalem:and in Jerusalem.et projecit omnia extra urbem. And he cast all these things outside the city.

Porro instauravit altare Domini,Then he repaired the altar of the Lord,et immolavit super illud victimas, et pacifica, and he immolated upon it victims, and peace offerings,et laudem:with praise.præcepitque Judæ ut serviret Domino Deo Israël.And he instructed Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel.

Attamen adhuc populus immolabat in excelsis Domino Deo suo.Yet still the people were immolating on the high places, to the Lord their God.

Reliqua autem gestorum Manasse,But the rest of the deeds of Manasseh,et obsecratio ejus ad Deum suum, and his prayer to his God,verba quoque videntium qui loquebantur ad eum in nomine Domini Dei Israël,and also the words of the seers who were speaking to him in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, continentur in sermonibus regum Israël.are contained in the words of the kings of Israel.

Oratio quoque ejus et exauditio,Also, his prayer and its heeding,et cuncta peccata atque contemptus, and all his sins and contempt, loca etiam in quibus ædificavit excelsa, et fecit lucos et statuas antequam ageret pœnitentiam, and the sites on which he built high places and made sacred groves and statues, before he repented, scripta sunt in sermonibus Hozai.have been written in the words of Hozai.

Dormivit ergo Manasses cum patribus suis,Then Manasseh slept with his fathers,et sepelierunt eum in domo sua:and they buried him in his own house.regnavitque pro eo filius ejus Amon. And his son, Amon, reigned in his place.

Viginti duorum annorum erat Amon cum regnare cœpisset,Amon was twenty-two years old when he had begun to reign,et duobus annis regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for two years in Jerusalem.

Fecitque malum in conspectu Domini,And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, sicut fecerat Manasses pater ejus:just as his father Manasseh had done.et cunctis idolis quæ Manasses fuerat fabricatus,And he immolated to all the idols that Manasseh had fabricated, immolavit atque servivit.and he served them.

Et non est reveritus faciem Domini,But he did not turn his face to the Lord, sicut reveritus est Manasses pater ejus,as his father Manasseh had turned himself.et multo majora deliquit. And he sinned much more grievously.

Cumque conjurassent adversus eum servi sui,And when his servants had conspired against him, interfecerunt eum in domo sua.they killed him in his own house.

Porro reliqua populi multitudo,But the rest of the multitude of the people,cæsis iis qui Amon percusserant, having slain those who had struck down Amon, constituit regem Josiam filium ejus pro eo.appointed his son, Josiah, as king in his place.
