Octo annorum erat Josias cum regnare cœpisset,Josiah was eight years old when he had begun to reign,et triginta et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

Fecitque quod erat rectum in conspectu Domini,And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord,et ambulavit in viis David patris sui:and he walked in the ways of his father David.non declinavitHe did not turn away, neque ad dextram, neither to the right, neque ad sinistram.nor to the left.

Octavo autem anno regni sui,Now in the eighth year of his reign, cum adhuc esset puer, when he was still a boy,cœpit quærere Deum patris sui David:he began to seek the God of his father David.et duodecimo anno postquam regnare cœperat,And in the twelfth year after he had begun to reign, mundavit Judam et Jerusalem ab excelsis, et lucis,he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the sacred groves, simulacrisque et sculptilibus.and the idols, and the graven images.

Destruxeruntque coram eo aras Baalim,And in his sight,et simulacra quæ superposita fuerant, they destroyed the altars of the Baals, demoliti sunt:and they demolished the idols which had been set upon them.lucos etiam et sculptilia succidit atque comminuit,And then he cut down the sacred groveset super tumulos eorum qui eis immolare consueverant, and crushed the graven images.fragmenta dispersit. And he scattered the fragments upon the tombs of those who had been accustomed to immolate to them.

Ossa præterea sacerdotum combussit in altaribus idolorum,And after that, mundavitque Judamhe burned the bones of the priests upon the altars of the idols.et Jerusalem. And so did he cleanse Judah and Jerusalem.

SedThen too,et in urbibus Manasse,in the cities of Manasseh,et Ephraim,and of Ephraim,et Simeon,and of Simeon,usque Nephthali,even to Naphtali,cuncta subvertit.he overturned everything.

Cumque altaria dissipasset,And when he had destroyed the altars and the sacred groves,et lucos et sculptilia contrivisset in frustra, and had broken the idols to pieces, cunctaque delubra demolitus esset de universa terra Israël,and when all the profane shrines had been demolished from the entire land of Israel, reversus est in Jerusalem.he returned to Jerusalem.

Igitur anno octavodecimo regni sui,And so, in the eighteenth year of his reign, mundata jam terra et templo Domini, having now cleansed the land and the temple of the Lord, misit Saphan filium Eseliæ,he sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah,et Maasiam principem civitatis, and Maaseiah, the ruler of the city,et Joha filium Joachaz a commentariis, and Joah, the son of Joahaz, the historian,ut instaurarent domum Domini Dei sui.to repair the house of the Lord his God.

Qui venerunt ad Helciam sacerdotem magnum:And they went to Hilkiah, acceptamque ab eo pecuniam quæ illata fuerat in domum Domini, the high priest.et quam congregaverant Levitæ,And having accepted from him the money which had been brought into the house of the Lord,et janitores de Manasse, and which the Levites and porters had gathered together from Manasseh,et Ephraim, and Ephraim,et universis reliquiis Israël,and the entire remnant of Israel,ab omni quoque Juda, and also from all of Judah,et Benjamin, and Benjamin,et habitatoribus Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

tradiderunt in manibus eorum qui præerant operariis in domo Domini, they delivered it into the hands of those who were in charge of the workers in the house of the Lord,ut instaurarent templum,so that they might repair the temple,et infirma quæque sarcirent.and restore whatever was weak.

At illi dederunt eam artificibus et cæmentariis,And they gave it to the artisans and the stoneworkers,ut emerent lapides de lapicidinis,so that they might buy stones from the quarries,et ligna ad commissuras ædificii, and wood for the joints of the building and for the upper floors of the houses,et ad contignationem domorum quas destruxerant reges Juda.which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

Qui fideliter cuncta faciebant. And they did everything faithfully.Erant autem præpositi operantium JahathNow the overseers of the workers were Jahath and Obadiah,et Abdias de filiis Merari, from the sons of Merari,Zachariasand Zechariah and Meshullam,et Mosollam de filiis Caath, from the sons of Kohath, qui urgebant opus:who were supervising the work.omnes Levitæ scientes organis canere. All were Levites who knew how to play musical instruments.

Super eos vero qui ad diversos usus onera portabant,Truly, erant scribæ,scribes and teachers,et magistri de Levitis, from among the Levites who were porters, janitores.were over those who were carrying burdens for various uses.

Cumque efferrent pecuniam quæ illata fuerat in templum Domini,And when they carried out the money that had been brought into the temple of the Lord, reperit Helcias sacerdos librum legis Domini per manum Moysi.Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

Et ait ad Saphan scribam:And he said to Shaphan, the scribe:Librum legis inveni in domo Domini:“I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.”et tradidit ei.And he delivered it to him.

At ille intulit volumen ad regem,Then he took the volume to the king,et nuntiavit ei,and he reported to him, dicens:saying:Omnia quæ dedisti in manu servorum tuorum,“Behold, ecce complentur.everything that you entrusted to your servants is completed.

Argentum quod repertum est in domo Domini, conflaverunt,They have melted together the silver that was found in the house of the Lord.datumque est præfectis artificum, et diversa opera fabricantium. And it has been given to the overseers of the artisans and craftsmen for various works.

Præterea tradidit mihi Helcias sacerdos hunc librum. After this, Hilkiah the priest gave to me this book.”Quem cum rege præsente recitasset,And when he had read it in the presence of the king,

audissetque ille verba legis, and he had heard the words of the law, scidit vestimenta sua:he tore his garments.

et præcepit Helciæ,And he instructed Hilkiah,et Ahicam filio Saphan, and Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,et Abdon filio Micha, and Abdon, the son of Micah,Saphan quoque scribæ,and also Shaphan, the scribe,et Asaæ servo regis, and Asaiah, the servant of the king, dicens:saying:

Ite,“Go,et orate Dominum pro me,and pray to the Lord for me,et pro reliquiis Israëland for the remnant of Israel and Judah,et Juda, concerning all the words of this book, super universis sermonibus libri istius, which has been found.qui repertus est:For the great fury of the Lord has rained down upon us,magnus enim furor Domini stillavit super nos, because our fathers did not keep the words of the Lord,eo quod non custodierint patres nostri verba Domini ut facerent omnia quæ scripta sunt in isto volumine.to do all that has been written in this volume.”

Abiit ergo Helcias,Therefore, Hilkiah,et hi qui simul a rege missi fuerant, and those who had been sent with him by the king,ad Oldam prophetidem, went to Huldah, the prophetess, uxorem Sellum filii Thecuath filii Hasra custodis vestium, the wife of Shallum, the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah,quæ habitabat in Jerusalem in Secunda:the keeper of the vestments. She was living in Jerusalem,et locuti sunt ei verba quæ supra narravimus.in the second part. And they spoke to her the words which we explained above.

At illa respondit eis:And she responded to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Dicite viro qui misit vos ad me:Tell the man who sent you to me:

Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Ecce ego inducam mala super locum istum et super habitatores ejus,Behold, I will lead in evils over this place, and over its inhabitants, cunctaque maledicta quæ scripta sunt in libro hoc, with all the curses that have been written in this book, quem legerunt coram rege Juda.which they have read before the king of Judah.

Quia dereliquerunt me,For they have abandoned me,et sacrificaverunt diis alienis, and they have sacrificed to foreign gods,ut me ad iracundiam provocarent in cunctis operibus manuum suarum,so that they provoked me to wrath by all the works of their hands. Therefore, idcirco stillabit furor meus super locum istum, et non extinguetur.my fury will rain down upon this place, and it will not be extinguished.

Ad regem autem Juda,To the king of Judah, qui misit vos pro Domino deprecando, who sent you to petition before the Lord, sic loquimini:so shall you speak:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Quoniam audisti verba voluminis,Since you listened to the words of this volume,

atque emollitum est cor tuum, and your heart was softened,et humiliatus es in conspectu Dei super his quæ dicta sunt contra locum hunc et habitatores Jerusalem, and you humbled yourself in the sight of God concerning these things which have been said against this place and against the inhabitants of Jerusalem, reveritusque faciem meam scidisti vestimenta tua,and since, revering my face, you have torn your garments,et flevisti coram me:and have wept before me:ego quoque exaudivi te,I also have heeded you, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Jam enim colligam te ad patres tuos,For now I will gather you to your fathers,et infereris in sepulchrum tuum in pace:and you will be brought into your sepulcher in peace.nec videbunt oculi tui omne malum quod ego inducturus sum super locum istum,Neither shall your eyes see all the evil that I will lead in,et super habitatores ejus.over this place and over its inhabitants.”Retulerunt itaque regi cuncta quæ dixerat. And so they took back to the king all that she had said.

At ille convocatis universis majoribus natu JudaAnd he,et Jerusalem, calling together all those greater by birth of Judah and Jerusalem,

ascendit in domum Domini, ascended to the house of the Lord, unaque omnes viri Juda et habitatores Jerusalem, united with all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, sacerdotes et Levitæ,the priests and the Levites,et cunctus populus a minimo usque ad maximum.and all the people, from the least even to the greatest.Quibus audientibus in domo Domini,And in their hearing, in the house of the Lord, legit rex omnia verba voluminis:the king read all the words of the volume.

et stans in tribunali suo,And standing up at his tribunal, percussit fœdus coram Domino ut ambularet post eum,he struck a covenant before the Lord, so that he would walk after him,et custodiret præcepta, et testimonia, and would keep his precepts and testimonies and justifications,et justificationes ejus in toto corde suo, with his whole heart and with his whole soul,et in tota anima sua, faceretque quæ scripta sunt in volumine illo, and so that he would do the things that were written in that volume, quod legerat.which he had read.

Adjuravit quoque super hoc omnes qui reperti fuerant in Jerusalem et Benjamin:Also, concerning this, he bound by oath all who had been found in Jerusalem and Benjamin.et fecerunt habitatores Jerusalem juxta pactum Domini Dei patrum suorum. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem acted in accord with the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers.

Abstulit ergo Josias cunctas abominationes de universis regionibus filiorum Israël:Therefore, Josiah took away all the abominations from all the regions of the sons of Israel.et fecit omnes qui residui erant in Israël, servire Domino Deo suo.And he caused all who were remaining in Israel to serve the Lord their God.Cunctis diebus ejus non recesserunt a Domino Deo patrum suorum.During all his days, they did not withdraw from the Lord, the God of their fathers.
