Intellectus Asaph. Attendite,The understanding of Asaph.popule meus,O my people, legem meam;attend to my law.inclinate aurem vestram in verba oris mei.Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

Aperiam in parabolis os meum;I will open my mouth in parables.loquar propositiones ab initio.I will speak about concepts that are from the beginning.

Quanta audivimus,We have heardet cognovimus ea,and known such great things,et patres nostri narraverunt nobis.as our fathers have described to us.

Non sunt occultata a filiis eorum in generatione altera,These things have not been hidden from their sons in any generation:narrantes laudes Dominideclaring the praises of the Lord,et virtutes ejus, and his virtues,et mirabilia ejus quæ fecit.and the wonders that he has done.

Et suscitavit testimonium in Jacob,And he has received testimony with Jacob,et legem posuit in Israël,and he has set a law within Israel.quanta mandavit patribus nostris nota facere ea filiis suis:Such great things, he has commanded our fathers, so as to make these things known to their sons,

ut cognoscat generatio altera:so that another generation might know them, filii qui nascenturand so that the sons,et exsurgent, who will be born and who will grow up,et narrabunt filiis suis, shall describe them to their sons.

ut ponant in Deo spem suam,So then, may they put their hope in God,et non obliviscantur operum Dei,and may they not forget the works of God,et mandata ejus exquirant:and may they seek his commandments.

ne fiant,May they not become like their fathers, sicut patres eorum,a perversegeneratio prava et exasperans;and exasperating generation:generatio quæ non direxit cor suum,a generation that does not straighten their heartet non est creditus cum Deo spiritus ejus.and whose spirit is not trustworthy with God.

Filii Ephrem,The sons of Ephraim, intendentes et mittentes arcum, who bend and shoot the bow, conversi sunt in die belli.have been turned back in the day of battle.

Non custodierunt testamentum Dei,They have not kept the covenant of God.et in lege ejus noluerunt ambulare. And they were not willing to walk in his law.

Et obliti sunt benefactorum ejus,And they have been forgetful of his benefits,et mirabilium ejus quæ ostendit eis.and of his miracle, which he revealed to them.

Coram patribus eorum fecit mirabilia in terra Ægypti,He performed miracles in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt,in campo Taneos.in the field of Tanis.

Interrupit mare,He broke the sea and he led them through.et perduxit eos,And he stationed the waters,et statuit aquas quasi in utre:as if in a vessel.

et deduxit eos in nube diei,And he led them with a cloud by day,et tota nocte in illuminatione ignis.and with illumination by fire throughout the night.

Interrupit petram in eremo,He broke through the rock in the wasteland,et adaquavit eos velut in abysso multa.and he gave them to drink, as if from the great abyss.

Et eduxit aquam de petra,He brought forth water from the rock,et deduxit tamquam flumina aquas.and he conducted the waters, as if they were rivers.

Et apposuerunt adhuc peccare ei;And yet, they continued to sin against him.in iram excitaverunt Excelsum in inaquoso. In a waterless place, they provoked the Most High with resentment.

Et tentaverunt Deum in cordibus suis,And they tempted God in their hearts,ut peterent escas animabus suis.by asking for food according to their desires.

Et male locuti sunt de Deo;And they spoke badly about God.dixerunt:They said,Numquid poterit Deus parare mensam in deserto?“Would God be able to prepare a table in the desert?

quoniam percussit petram,He struck the rock,et fluxerunt aquæ,and so waters flowed and the torrents flooded,et torrentes inundaverunt.but would even he be able to provide bread,Numquid et panem poterit dare,or provide a table, aut parare mensam populo suo?for his people?”

Ideo audivit Dominus et distulit; Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed,et ignis accensus est in Jacob, and a fire was kindled within Jacob,et ira ascendit in Israël:and an anger ascended into Israel.

quia non crediderunt in Deo,For they neither put their trust in God,nec speraverunt in salutari ejus.nor did they hope in his salvation.

Et mandavit nubibus desuper,And he commanded the clouds from above,et januas cæli aperuit.and he opened the doors of heaven.

Et pluit illis manna ad manducandum,And he rained down manna upon them to eat,et panem cæli dedit eis.and he gave them the bread of heaven.

Panem angelorum manducavit homo;Man ate the bread of Angels.cibaria misit eis in abundantia. He sent them provisions in abundance.

Transtulit austrum de cælo,He transferred the south wind from heaven,et induxit in virtute sua africum.and, in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.

Et pluit super eos sicut pulverem carnes,And he rained down flesh upon them, as if it were dust,et sicut arenam maris volatilia pennata.and feathered birds, as if they were the sand of the sea.

Et ceciderunt in medio castrorum eorum,And they fell down in the midst of their camp, circa tabernacula eorum.encircling their tabernacles.

Et manducaverunt, et saturati sunt nimis,And they ate until they were greatly satisfied,et desiderium eorum attulit eis:and he brought to them according to their desires.

non sunt fraudati a desiderio suo. They were not cheated out of what they wanted.Adhuc escæ eorum erant in ore ipsorum,Their food was still in their mouth,

et ira Dei ascendit super eos:and then the wrath of God came upon them.et occidit pingues eorum,And he slew the fat ones among them,et electos Israël impedivit.and he impeded the elect of Israel.

In omnibus his peccaverunt adhuc,In all these things, they continued to sin,et non crediderunt in mirabilibus ejus.and they were not trustworthy with his miracles.

Et defecerunt in vanitate dies eorum,And their days faded away into vanity,et anni eorum cum festinatione.and their years with haste.

Cum occideret eos,When he slew them,quærebant eumthen they sought him.et revertebantur,And they returned,et diluculo veniebant ad eum.and they drew near to him in the early morning.

Et rememorati sunt quia Deus adjutor est eorum,And they were mindful that God is their helperet Deus excelsus redemptor eorum est.and that the Most High God is their redeemer.

Et dilexerunt eum in ore suo,And they chose him with their mouth,et lingua sua mentiti sunt ei;and then they lied to him with their tongue.

cor autem eorum non erat rectum cum eo,For their heart was not upright with him,nec fideles habiti sunt in testamento ejus.nor have they been living faithfully in his covenant.

Ipse autem est misericors,Yet he is merciful,et propitius fiet peccatis eorum, and he will pardon their sins.et non disperdet eos.And he will not destroy them.Et abundavit ut averteret iram suam,And he has abundantly turned aside his own wrath.et non accendit omnem iram suam. And he did not enflame his wrath entirely.

Et recordatus est quia caro sunt,And he remembered that they are flesh:spiritus vadens et non rediens.with a spirit that goes forth and does not return.

Quoties exacerbaverunt eum in deserto; How often did they provoke him in the desertin iram concitaverunt eum in inaquoso?and stir him to wrath in a waterless place?

Et conversi sunt,And they turned backet tentaverunt Deum, and tempted God,et sanctum Israël exacerbaverunt.and they exasperated the Holy One of Israel.

Non sunt recordati manus ejus,They did not remember his hand, die qua redemit eos de manu tribulantis:in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of the one troubling them.

sicut posuit in Ægypto signa sua,Thus,et prodigia sua in campo Taneos;he positioned his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Tanis.

et convertit in sanguinem flumina eorum,And he turned their rivers into blood,et imbres eorum, along with their rain showers,ne biberent.so that they could not drink.

Misit in eos cœnomyiam,He sent among them the common fly,et comedit eos,and it devoured them,et ranam, and the frog,et disperdidit eos;and it scattered them.

et dedit ærugini fructus eorum,And he gave up their fruits to moldet labores eorum locustæ;and their labors to the locust.

et occidit in grandine vineas eorum,And he slew their vineyards with hailet moros eorum in pruina;and their mulberry trees with severe frost.

et tradidit grandini jumenta eorum,And he delivered their cattle to the hailet possessionem eorum igni;and their possessions to fire.

misit in eos iram indignationis suæ,And he sent the wrath of his indignation among them:indignationem, indignationet iram, and wrathet tribulationem, and tribulation, immissiones per angelos malos.sent forth by evil angels.

Viam fecit semitæ iræ suæ:He made way for the path of his anger.non pepercit a morte animabus eorum,He did not spare their souls from death.et jumenta eorum in morte conclusit:And he enclosed their beasts of burden in death.

et percussit omne primogenitum in terra Ægypti; And he struck all the first-born in the land of Egypt:primitias omnis laboris eorum in tabernaculis Cham:the first-fruits of all their labor in the tabernacles of Ham.

et abstulit sicut oves populum suum,And he took away his own people like sheep,et perduxit eos tamquam gregem in deserto:and he led them through the wilderness like a flock.

et deduxit eos in spe,And he led them out in hope,et non timuerunt, and they did not fear.et inimicos eorum operuit mare. And the sea covered their enemies.

Et induxit eos in montem sanctificationis suæ,And he led them to the mountain of his sanctification:montem quem acquisivit dextera ejus;the mountain that his right hand had acquired.et ejecit a facie eorum gentes,And he cast out the Gentiles before their face.et sorte divisit eis terram in funiculo distributionis; And he divided their land by lot to them, with a line of distribution.

et habitare fecit in tabernaculis eorum tribus Israël.And he caused the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.

Et tentaverunt,Yet they temptedet exacerbaverunt Deum excelsum, and aggravated God Most High,et testimonia ejus non custodierunt.and they did not keep his testaments.

Et averterunt se,And they turned themselves aside,et non servaverunt pactum:and they did not serve the covenant.quemadmodum patres eorum,In the same manner as their fathers, conversi sunt in arcum pravum.they were turned backwards, like a crooked bow.

In iram concitaverunt eum in collibus suis,They impelled him to anger on their hills,et in sculptilibus suis ad æmulationem eum provocaverunt.and they provoked him to rivalry with their graven images.

Audivit Deus, et sprevit,God listened, and he spurned them,et ad nihilum redegit valde Israël.and he reduced Israel greatly, almost to nothing.

Et repulit tabernaculum Silo,And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, tabernaculum suum, ubi habitavit in hominibus.his tabernacle where he had dwelt among men.

Et tradidit in captivitatem virtutem eorum,And he delivered their virtue into captivity,et pulchritudinem eorum in manus inimici.and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.

Et conclusit in gladio populum suum,And he enclosed his people with the sword,et hæreditatem suam sprevit.and he spurned his inheritance.

Juvenes eorum comedit ignis,Fire consumed their young men,et virgines eorum non sunt lamentatæ.and their virgins were not lamented.

Sacerdotes eorum in gladio ceciderunt,Their priests fell by the sword,et viduæ eorum non plorabantur.and their widows did not weep.

Et excitatus est tamquam dormiens Dominus,And the Lord was awakened, as if out of sleep, tamquam potens crapulatus a vino.and like a powerful man impaired by wine.

Et percussit inimicos suos in posteriora; And he struck his enemies on the back.opprobrium sempiternum dedit illis. He gave them over to everlasting disgrace.

Et repulit tabernaculum Joseph,And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph,et tribum Ephraim non elegit:and he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.

sed elegit tribum Juda,But he chose the tribe of Judah:montem Sion, mount Zion, quem dilexit.which he loved.

Et ædificavit sicut unicornium sanctificium suum,And he built up his sanctuary, like a single-horned beast,in terra quam fundavit in sæcula.in the land that he founded for all ages.

Et elegit David, servum suum,And he chose his servant David,et sustulit eum de gregibus ovium;and he took him from the flocks of the sheep:de post fœtantes accepit eum:he received him from following the ewes with their young,

pascere Jacob servum suum,in order to pasture Jacob his servantet Israël hæreditatem suam.and Israel his inheritance.

Et pavit eos in innocentia cordis sui,And he fed them with the innocence of his heart.et in intellectibus manuum suarum deduxit eos.And he led them with the understanding of his hands.
