Intellectus Ethan Ezrahitæ.The understanding of Ethan the Ezrahite.
Misericordias Domini in æternum cantabo;I will sing the mercies of the Lord in eternity.in generationemI will announce your truth with my mouth,et generationem annuntiabo veritatem tuam in ore meo.from generation to generation.
Quoniam dixisti:For you have said:In æternum misericordia ædificabitur in cælis;Mercy will be built in the heavens, unto eternity.præparabitur veritas tua in eis.Your truth will be prepared there.
Disposui testamentum electis meis;I have set up a covenant with my elect.juravi David servo meo:I have sworn to David my servant:
Usque in æternum præparabo semen tuum,I will prepare your offspring, even in eternity.et ædificabo in generationem et generationem sedem tuam. And I will build up your throne, from generation to generation.
Confitebuntur cæli mirabilia tua, Domine; The heavens will confess your miracles, Lord, etenim veritatem tuam in ecclesia sanctorum.and also your truth, in the Church of the saints.
Quoniam quis in nubibus æquabitur Domino; For who among the clouds is equal to the Lord?similis erit Deo in filiis Dei?Who among the sons of God is like God?
Deus,God is glorified by the counsel of the saints.qui glorificatur in consilio sanctorum,He is greatmagnus et terribilis super omnes qui in circuitu ejus sunt.and terrible above all those who are around him.
Domine Deus virtutum,O Lord, God of hosts, quis similis tibi?who is like you?potens es, Domine,You are powerful, Lord,et veritas tua in circuitu tuo.and your truth is all around you.
Tu dominaris potestati maris; You rule over the power of the sea, motum autem fluctuum ejus tu mitigas.and you even mitigate the movement of its waves.
Tu humiliasti, sicut vulneratum,You have humbled the arrogant one, superbum; in brachio virtutis tuæ dispersisti inimicos tuos.like one who has been wounded. You have scattered your enemies with the arm of your strength.
Tui sunt cæli,Yours are the heavens,et tua est terra:and yours is the earth.orbem terræ, et plenitudinem ejus tu fundasti; You founded the whole world in all its fullness.
aquilonem et mare tu creasti. You created the north and the sea.Thabor et Hermon in nomine tuo exsultabunt:Tabor and Hermon will exult in your name.
tuum brachium cum potentia.Your arm acts with power.Firmetur manus tua,Let your hand be strengthened,et exaltetur dextera tua:and let your right hand be exalted.
justitia et judicium præparatio sedis tuæ:Justice and judgment are the preparation of your throne.misericordia et veritas præcedent faciem tuam.Mercy and truth will precede your face.
Beatus populus qui scit jubilationem:Blessed is the people that knows jubilation.Domine,They will walk in the light of your countenance,in lumine vultus tui ambulabunt,O Lord,
et in nomine tuo exsultabunt tota die,and they will exult in your name all day long,et in justitia tua exaltabuntur.and they will be exalted in your justice.
Quoniam gloria virtutis eorum tu es,For you are the glory of their virtue,et in beneplacito tuo exaltabitur cornu nostrum.and in your goodness, our horn will be exalted.
Quia Domini est assumptio nostra,For our assumption is of the Lord,et sancti Israël regis nostri.and it is of our king, the holy one of Israel.
Tunc locutus es in visione sanctis tuis,Then you spoke in a vision to your holy ones,et dixisti:and you said:Posui adjutorium in potente,I have stationed help with the powerful one,et exaltavi electum de plebe mea.and I have exalted the elect one from my people.
Inveni David, servum meum;I have found my servant David.oleo sancto meo unxi eum.I have anointed him with my holy oil.
Manus enim mea auxiliabitur ei,For my hand will assist him,et brachium meum confortabit eum.and my arm will fortify him.
Nihil proficiet inimicus in eo,The enemy will have no advantage over him,et filius iniquitatis non apponet nocere ei.nor will the son of iniquity be positioned to harm him.
Et concidam a facie ipsius inimicos ejus,And I will cut down his enemies before his face.et odientes eum in fugam convertam. And those who hate him, I will turn to flight.
Et veritas mea et misericordia mea cum ipso,And my truth and my mercy will be with him.et in nomine meo exaltabitur cornu ejus. And his horn will be exalted in my name.
Et ponam in mari manum ejus,And I will place his hand on the seaet in fluminibus dexteram ejus.and his right hand on the rivers.
Ipse invocabit me:He will invoke me:Pater meus es tu,“You are my father,Deus meus,my God,et susceptor salutis meæ.and the support of my salvation.”
Et ego primogenitum ponam illum,And I will make him the first-born,excelsum præ regibus terræ.preeminent before the kings of the earth.
In æternum servabo illi misericordiam meam,I will preserve my mercy for him eternally,et testamentum meum fidele ipsi.and my covenant for him faithfully.
Et ponam in sæculum sæculi semen ejus,And I will set his offspring from generation to generation,et thronum ejus sicut dies cæli.and his throne like the days of heaven.
Si autem dereliquerint filii ejus legem meam,But if his sons abandon my law,et in judiciis meis non ambulaverint;and if they do not walk in my judgments,
si justitias meas profanaverint,if they profane my justices,et mandata mea non custodierint:and if they do not keep my commandments:
visitabo in virga iniquitates eorum,I will visit their iniquities with a rod,et in verberibus peccata eorum;and their sins with a beating.
misericordiam autem meam non dispergam ab eo,But I will not scatter my mercy from him, neque nocebo in veritate mea,and I will not do harm to my truth.
neque profanabo testamentum meum:And I will not profane my covenant,et quæ procedunt de labiis meis non faciam irrita.and I will not make void that which proceeds from my lips.
Semel juravi in sancto meo,I have sworn by my holiness one time:si David mentiar:I will not lie to David,
semen ejus in æternum manebit.his offspring will remain for eternity.Et thronus ejus sicut sol in conspectu meo,And his throne will be like the sun in my sight,
et sicut luna perfecta in æternum, and, like the moon, it is perfected in eternity,et testis in cælo fidelis.and it is a faithful witness in heaven.
Tu vero repulisti et despexisti;Yet, truly, you have rejected and despised, distulisti christum tuum.you have pushed away, my Christ.
Evertisti testamentum servi tui;You have overthrown the covenant of your servant.profanasti in terra sanctuarium ejus. You have profaned his sanctuary on earth.
Destruxisti omnes sepes ejus; You have destroyed all his fences.posuisti firmamentum ejus formidinem. You have made his territory dreadful.
Diripuerunt eum omnes transeuntes viam; All who pass by the way have plundered him.factus est opprobrium vicinis suis.He has become a disgrace to his neighbors.
Exaltasti dexteram deprimentium eum;You have exalted the right hand of those who oppress him.lætificasti omnes inimicos ejus. You have brought joy to all his enemies.
Avertisti adjutorium gladii ejus,You have diverted the help of his sword,et non es auxiliatus ei in bello.and you have not assisted him in battle.
Destruxisti eum ab emundatione,You have torn him away from cleansing,et sedem ejus in terram collisisti.and you have smashed his throne down to the ground.
Minorasti dies temporis ejus; You have reduced the days of his time.perfudisti eum confusione. You have flooded him with confusion.
Usquequo,How long,Domine,O Lord?avertis in finem? Will you turn away unto the end?exardescet sicut ignis ira tua? Will your wrath flare up like a fire?
Memorare quæ mea substantia:Remember what my substance is.numquid enim vane constituisti omnes filios hominum? For could you really have appointed all the sons of men in vain?
Quis est homo qui vivetWho is the man that will live,et non videbit mortem?and yet not see death?eruet animam suam de manu inferi?Who will rescue his own soul from the hand of the underworld?
Ubi sunt misericordiæ tuæ antiquæ,O Lord,Domine, where are your mercies of antiquity, sicut jurasti David in veritate tua?just as you swore to David in your truth?
Memor esto,Be mindful,Domine,O Lord, opprobrii servorum tuorum, quod continui in sinu meo, multarum gentium:of the disgrace of your servants (which I have sustained in my sinews) among many nations.
quod exprobraverunt inimici tui,With these, your enemies have reproached you,Domine;O Lord;quod exprobraverunt commutationem christi tui.with these, they have reproached the commutation of your Christ.
Benedictus Dominus in æternum.Blessed is the Lord for all eternity.Fiat,Amen.fiat.Amen.
