Fuit vir unus de Ramathaimsophim,There was a certain man from Ramah of Zophim,de monte Ephraim,on Mount Ephraim,et nomen ejus Elcana, and his name was Elkanah, filius Jeroham, the son of Jeroham, filii Eliu, the son of Elihu, filii Thohu, the son of Tohu, filii Suph, the son of Zuph,Ephrathæus:an Ephraimite.
et habuit duas uxores,And he had two wives:nomen uni Anna, the name of one was Hannah,et nomen secundæ Phenenna.and the name of the second was Peninnah.Fueruntque Phenennæ filii:And Peninnah had sons.Annæ autem non erant liberi. But Hannah did not have children.
Et ascendebat vir ille de civitate sua statutis diebus,And this man went up from his city,ut adorareton the established days,et sacrificaret Domino exercituum in Silo.so that he might adore and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh.Erant autem ibi duo filii Heli,Now the two sons of Eli,OphniHophni and Phinehas,et Phinees, priests of the Lord, sacerdotes Domini.were in that place.
Venit ergo dies,Then the day arrived,et immolavit Elcana, and Elkanah immolated.deditque Phenennæ uxori suæ,And he gave portions to his wife Peninnah,et cunctis filiis ejus et filiabus, and to all her sonspartes:and daughters.
Annæ autem dedit partem unam tristis,But to Hannah he gave one portion with sorrow.quia Annam diligebat. For he loved Hannah,Dominus autem concluserat vulvam ejus.but the Lord had closed her womb.
Affligebat quoque eam æmula ejus,And her rival afflicted her and vehemently distressed her,et vehementer angebat,to a great extent,in tantum ut exprobraret quod Dominus conclusisset vulvam ejus:for she rebuked her that the Lord had closed her womb.
sicque faciebat per singulos annos:And she did so every year, cum redeunte tempore ascenderent ad templum Domini, when the time returned for them to ascend to the temple of the Lord.et sic provocabat eam:And she provoked her in this way.porro illa flebat,And so,et non capiebat cibum.she wept and did not take food.
Dixit ergo ei Elcana vir suus:Therefore,Anna, her husband Elkanah said to her:cur fles?“Hannah,et quare non comedis?why are you weeping?et quam ob rem affligitur cor tuum? And why do you not eat?numquid non ego melior tibi sum,And for what reason do you afflict your heart?quam decem filii?Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
Surrexit autem Anna postquam comederat et biberat in Silo. And so, after she ate and drank at Shiloh, Hannah rose up.Et Heli sacerdote sedente super sellam ante postes templi Domini,And Eli, the priest, was sitting on the seat before the door of the temple of the Lord.
cum esset Anna amaro animo,And since Hannah was bitter in soul, oravit ad Dominum, she prayed to the Lord, flens largiter, weeping greatly.
et votum vovit,And she made a vow, dicens:saying,Domine exercituum,“O Lord of hosts, if,si respiciens videris afflictionem famulæ tuæ, et recordatus mei fueris,in looking with favor, you will see the affliction of your servant and will remember me,nec oblitus ancillæ tuæ,and will not forget your handmaid, dederisque servæ tuæ sexum virilem:and if you will give to your servant a male child, dabo eum Domino omnibus diebus vitæ ejus, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life,et novacula non ascendet super caput ejus.and no razor shall pass over his head.”
Factum est autem,Then it happened that, cum illa multiplicaret preces coram Domino, while she multiplied prayers before the Lord,ut Heli observaret os ejus.Eli observed her mouth.
Porro Anna loquebatur in corde suo,For Hannah was speaking in her heart, tantumque labia illius movebantur, and only her lips moved,et vox penitus non audiebatur.and her voice was barely heard.Æstimavit ergo eam Heli temulentam,Therefore, Eli considered her to be drunk,
dixitque ei:and so he said to her:Usquequo ebria eris?“How long will you be inebriated?digere paulisper vinum,You should take only a little wine, quo mades.but instead you are drenched.”
Respondens Anna:Responding,Nequaquam,Hannah said:inquit,“By no means, domine mi:my lord.nam mulier infelix nimis ego sum:For I am an exceedingly unhappy woman, vinumqueand I drank neither wine,et omne quod inebriare potest, nor anything that can inebriate.non bibi,Instead, sed effudi animam meam in conspectu Domini.I have poured out my soul in the sight of the Lord.
Ne reputes ancillam tuam quasi unam de filiabus Belial:You should not repute your handmaid as one of the daughters of Belial.quia ex multitudine dolorisFor I have been speaking from the abundance of my sorrow and grief,et mœroris mei locuta sum usque in præsens.even until now.”
Tunc Heli ait ei:Then Eli said to her:Vade in pace:“Go in peace.et Deus Israël det tibi petitionem tuam quam rogasti eum.And may the God of Israel grant to you your petition, which you have begged of him.”
Et illa dixit:And she said,Utinam inveniat ancilla tua gratiam in oculis tuis.“I wish that your handmaid may find grace in your eyes.”Et abiit mulier in viam suam,And the woman went on her way,et comedit, and she ate, vultusque illius non sunt amplius in diversa mutati.and her countenance was no longer changed for the worse.
Et surrexerunt mane,And they rose up in the morning,et adoraverunt coram Domino:and they worshipped before the Lord.reversique sunt,And they returnedet venerunt in domum suam Ramatha.and arrived at their own house at Ramah.Cognovit autem Elcana Annam uxorem suam:Then Elkanah knew his wife Hannah.et recordatus est ejus Dominus. And the Lord remembered her.
Et factum est post circulum dierum,And it happened that, concepit Anna,in the course of days,et peperit filium:Hannah conceived and bore a son.vocavitque nomen ejus Samuel,And she called his name Samuel,eo quod a Domino postulasset eum.because she had requested him from the Lord.
Ascendit autem vir ejus Elcana, et omnis domus ejus,Now her husband Elkanah ascended with his entire house,ut immolaret Domino hostiam solemnem, et votum suum.so that he might immolate to the Lord a solemn sacrifice, with his vow.
Et Anna non ascendit:But Hannah did not go up.dixit enim viro suo:For she said to her husband,Non vadam donec ablactetur infans,“I will not go, until the infant has been weaned,et ducam eum,and until I may lead him,ut appareat ante conspectum Domini,so that he may appear before the sight of the Lord,et maneat ibi jugiter.and may remain always there.”
Et ait ei Elcana vir suus:And her husband Elkanah said to her:Fac quod bonum tibi videtur,“Do what seems good to you,et mane donec ablactes eum:and stay until you wean him.precorque ut impleat Dominus verbum suum. And I pray that the Lord may fulfill his word.” Therefore,Mansit ergo mulier, the woman remained at home,et lactavit filium suum, and she breastfed her son, donec amoveret eum a lacte.until she withdrew him from milk.
Et adduxit eum secum,And after she had weaned him, postquam ablactaverat, she brought him with her,in vitulis tribus, along with three calves,et tribus modiis farinæ,and three measures of flour,et amphora vini, and a small bottle of wine,et adduxit eum ad domum Domini in Silo.and she led him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh.Puer autem erat adhuc infantulus:But the boy was still a young child.
et immolaverunt vitulum,And they immolated a calf,et obtulerunt puerum Heli.and they presented the boy to Eli.
Et ait Anna:And Hannah said:Obsecro mi domine,“I beg you, my lord, vivit anima tua,as your soul lives, domine:my lord:ego sum illa mulier,I am that woman,quæ steti coram te hic orans Dominum.who stood before you here, praying to the Lord.
Pro puero isto oravi,I prayed for this child,et dedit mihi Dominus petitionem meam quam postulavi eum.and the Lord granted to me my petition, which I asked of him.
Idcirco et ego commodavi eum Domino cunctis diebus quibus fuerit commodatus Domino.Because of this, I have also lent him to the Lord, for all the days when he shall be lent to the Lord.”Et adoraverunt ibi Dominum. And they adored the Lord in that place.Et oravit Anna,And Hannah prayed,et ait:and she said:
