Exultavit cor meum in Domino,“My heart exults in the Lord,et exaltatum est cornu meum in Deo meo;and my horn is exalted in my God.dilatatum est os meum super inimicos meos:My mouth is enlarged over my enemies.quia lætata sum in salutari tuo.For I have rejoiced in your salvation.
Non est sanctus, ut est Dominus,Nothing is holy as the Lord is holy.neque enim est alius extra te,For there is no other beside you.et non est fortis sicut Deus noster. And nothing is strong as our God is strong.
Nolite multiplicare loqui sublimia gloriantes;Do not continue speaking of great things, boasting.recedant vetera de ore vestro:Let what is old depart from your mouth.quia Deus scientiarum Dominus est,For the Lord is the God of knowledge,et ipsi præparantur cogitationes.and thoughts are prepared for him.
Arcus fortium superatus est,The bow of the powerful has been overwhelmed,et infirmi accincti sunt robore.and the weak have been girded with strength.
Repleti prius,Those who before were filled, pro panibus se locaverunt:have hired themselves out for bread.et famelici saturati sunt,And the starving have been filled, donec sterilis peperit plurimos:so that the barren have given birth to many.et quæ multos habebat filios, infirmata est.But she who had borne many sons has become unable.
Dominus mortificatThe Lord brings death,et vivificat;and he gives life.deducit ad inferosHe leads away to death,et reducit.and he brings back again.
Dominus pauperem facitThe Lord impoverishes,et ditat, and he enriches.humiliatHe humbles,et sublevat.and he lifts up.
Suscitat de pulvere egenum,He raises up the indigent from the dust,et de stercore elevat pauperem:and he lifts up the poor from filth,ut sedeat cum principibus,so that they may sit with princes,et solium gloriæ teneat.and take hold of a throne of glory.Domini enim sunt cardines terræ,For the hinges of the earth belong to the Lord,et posuit super eos orbem.and he has placed the globe upon them.
Pedes sanctorum suorum servabit,He will preserve the feet of his holy ones,et impii in tenebris conticescent:and the impious will be silenced in darkness.quia non in fortitudine sua roborabitur vir.For no man will prevail by his own strength.
Dominum formidabunt adversarii ejus:The adversaries of the Lord will dread him.et super ipsos in cælis tonabit. And over them, he will thunder in the heavens.Dominus judicabit fines terræ,The Lord will judge the parts of the earth,et dabit imperium regi suo,and he will give dominion to his king,et sublimabit cornu christi sui.and he will lift up the horn of his Christ.”
Et abiit Elcana Ramatha,And Elkanah went away to Ramah,in domum suam:to his house.puer autem erat minister in conspectu Domini ante faciem Heli sacerdotis. But the boy was a minister in the sight of the Lord, before the face of Eli, the priest.
Porro filii Heli, filii Belial,But the sons of Eli were sons of Belial, nescientes Dominum, not knowing the Lord,
neque officium sacerdotum ad populum:nor the priestly office for the people. And so,sed quicumque immolasset victimam,no matter who had immolated a victim, veniebat puer sacerdotis, the servant of the priest would arrive, dum coquerentur carnes, while the flesh was still cooking,et habebat fuscinulam tridentem in manu sua,and he would take a three-pronged hook in his hand,
et mittebat eam in lebetem, and put it into the vessel, vel in caldariam,or into the cauldron, aut in ollam,or into the cooking pot, sive in cacabum:or into the pan,et omne quod levabat fuscinula, and all that the hook lifted up,tollebat sacerdos sibi:the priest took for himself.sic faciebant universo Israëli venientium in Silo.So they did to all of Israel who arrived at Shiloh.
Etiam antequam adolerent adipem,In addition, before they burned the fat, veniebat puer sacerdotis, the servant of the priest would arrive,et dicebat immolanti:and he would say to the one who was immolating:Da mihi carnem,“Give me the flesh,ut coquam sacerdoti:so that I may boil it for the priest.non enim accipiam a te carnem coctam, sed crudam. For I will not accept cooked meat from you, but raw.”
Dicebatque illi immolans:And the one who was immolating would say to him,Incendatur primum juxta morem hodie adeps,“First, allow the fat to be burned today, according to custom,et tolle tibi quantumcumque desiderat anima tua.and then take for yourself whatever your soul desires.”Qui respondens aiebat ei:But in response, he would say to him:Nequaquam:“By no means.nunc enim dabis,For you will give it to me now, alioquin tollam vi.otherwise I will take it by force.”
Erat ergo peccatum puerorum grande nimis coram Domino:Therefore, the sin of the servants was exceedingly great before the Lord.quia retrahebant homines a sacrificio Domini. For they drew men away from the sacrifice of the Lord.
Samuel autem ministrabat ante faciem Domini,But Samuel was ministering before the face of the Lord;puer accinctus ephod lineo.he was a youth girded with a linen ephod.
Et tunicam parvam faciebat ei mater sua,And his mother fashioned a little tunic for him, quam afferebat statutis diebus, which she brought to him on the appointed days, ascendens cum viro suo, ascending with her husband,ut immolaret hostiam solemnem.so that he might immolate the solemn sacrifice.
Et benedixit Heli Elcanæ et uxori ejus:And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife.dixitque ei:And he said to him,Reddat tibi Dominus semen de muliere hac,“May the Lord repay to you offspring from this woman, pro fœnore quod commodasti Domino.on behalf of the loan that you offered to the Lord.”Et abierunt in locum suum. And they went away to their own place.
Visitavit ergo Dominus Annam,Then the Lord visited Hannah,et concepit, and she conceivedet peperit tres filios, and bore three sonset duas filias:and two daughters.et magnificatus est puer Samuel apud Dominum. And the youth Samuel was magnified with the Lord.
Heli autem erat senex valde,Now Eli was very old,et audivit omnia quæ faciebant filii sui universo Israëli,and he heard all that his sons were doing to all of Israel,et quomodo dormiebant cum mulieribus quæ observabant ad ostium tabernaculi:and how they were sleeping with the women who were waiting at the door of the tabernacle.
et dixit eis:And he said to them:Quare facitis res hujuscemodi quas ego audio,“Why are you doing these kinds of things, res pessimas, very wicked things,ab omni populo?that I have heard from all the people?
Nolite,My sons, filii mei:do not be willing.non enim est bona fama quam ego audio,For it is no good report that I am hearing,ut transgredi faciatis populum Domini.so that you would cause the people of the Lord to transgress.
Si peccaverit vir in virum,If a man has sinned against a man, placari ei potest Deus:God may be able to be appeased over him.si autem in Dominum peccaverit vir,But if a man has sinned against the Lord, quis orabit pro eo?who will pray for him?”Et non audierunt vocem patris sui:But they did not listen to the voice of their father, quia voluit Dominus occidere eos.that the Lord was willing to kill them.
Puer autem Samuel proficiebat atque crescebat,But the youth Samuel advanced, and grew up,et placebat tam Domino quam hominibus.and he was pleasing to the Lord, as well as to men.
Venit autem vir Dei ad Heli,Then a man of God went to Eli,et ait ad eum:and he said to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Numquid non aperte revelatus sum domui patris tui,Was I not revealed openly to the house of your father, cum essent in Ægypto in domo Pharaonis?when they were in Egypt in the house of Pharaoh?
Et elegi eum ex omnibus tribubus Israël mihi in sacerdotem,And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel for myself as priest,ut ascenderet ad altare meum,so that he might ascend to my altar,et adoleret mihi incensum, and burn incense to me,et portaret ephod coram me:and wear the ephod before me.et dedi domui patris tui omnia de sacrificiis filiorum Israël.And I gave to the house of your father all the sacrifices of the sons of Israel.
Quare calce abjecistis victimam meam,Why have you kicked away my victims and my gifts,et munera mea quæ præcepi ut offerrentur in templo:which I instructed to be offered in the temple?et magis honorasti filios tuos quam me,And why have you given more honor to your sons than to me,ut comederetis primitias omnis sacrificii Israël populi mei?so that you eat the first-fruits of every sacrifice of my people Israel?
Propterea ait Dominus Deus Israël:Because of this, the Lord God of Israel says:Loquens locutus sum,I have spoken clearly,ut domus tua,so that your house,et domus patris tui,and the house of your father, ministraret in conspectu meo usque in sempiternum.may minister in my sight, even forever.Nunc autem dicit Dominus: Absit hoc a me:But now the Lord says: May this be far from me.sed quicumque glorificaverit me,Instead, whoever will have glorified me,glorificabo eum:I will glorify him.qui autem contemnunt me,But whoever despises me,erunt ignobiles.they will be despised.
Ecce dies veniunt,Behold the days are arriving,et præcidam brachium tuum, when I will cut off your arm,et brachium domus patris tui,and the arm of the house of your father,ut non sit senex in domo tua.so that there will not be an old man in your house.
Et videbis æmulum tuum in templo,And you will see your rival in the temple,in universis prosperis Israël:amid all the prosperity of Israel.et non erit senex in domo tua omnibus diebus. And there will not be an old man in your house for all days.
Verumtamen non auferam penitus virum ex te ab altari meo:Yet truly, I will not entirely take away a man of you from my altar, sed ut deficiant oculi tui,but such that your eyes may fail,et tabescat anima tua:and your soul may melt away,et pars magna domus tuæ morietur cum ad virilem ætatem venerit.and a great part of your house may die out, as it pertains to the state of men.
Hoc autem erit tibi signum,But this will be a sign to you, quod venturum est duobus filiis tuis, which will happen to your two sons,Ophni et Phinees:Hophni and Phinehas:in die uno morientur ambo.on one day they both will die.
Et suscitabo mihi sacerdotem fidelem,And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, qui juxta cor meum et animam meam faciet:who will act in accord with my heart and my soul.et ædificabo ei domum fidelem,And I will build a faithful house for him.et ambulabit coram christo meo cunctis diebus. And he will walk before my Christ for all days.
Futurum est autem,Then this will be in the future,ut quicumque remanserit in domo tua, that whoever will have remained of your house, veniat ut oretur pro eo,he will approach so that he may pray on his behalf.et offerat nummum argenteum,And he will offer a coin of silver,et tortam panis, and a twist of bread.dicatque:And he will say:Dimitte me,‘Permit me,obsecro,I beg you,ad unam partem sacerdotalem, one part of the priestly office,ut comedam buccellam panis.so that I may eat a mouthful of bread.’”
