Dixit autem Samuel ad universum Israël:Then Samuel said to all of Israel: “Behold,Ecce audivi vocem vestram juxta omnia quæ locuti estis ad me,I have listened to your voice, according to all that you have said to me,et constitui super vos regem.and I have appointed a king over you.
Et nunc rex graditur ante vos:And now the king advances before you.ego autem senui, et incanui:But I am old and have gray hair.porro filii mei vobiscum sunt:Moreover, my sons are with you.itaque conversatus coram vobis ab adolescentia mea usque ad hanc diem,And so, having conversed before you from my youth, even until this day, ecce præsto sum.behold, I am here.
Loquimini de me coram Domino,Speak about me before the Lord,et coram christo ejus, and before his Christ, utrum bovem cujusquam tulerim,as to whether I have taken anyone’s ox or donkey, aut asinum:or whether I have falsely accused anyone,si quempiam calumniatus sum,or whether I have oppressed anyone,si oppressi aliquem,or whether I have accepted a bribe from the hand of anyone,si de manu cujusquam munus accepi:and I will repudiate the same,et contemnam illud hodie, this day, restituamque vobis.and I will restore it to you.”
Et dixerunt:And they said,Non es calumniatus nos,“You have not falsely accused us,neque oppressisti, nor oppressed us,neque tulisti de manu alicujus quippiam.nor have you taken anything from the hand of anyone.”
Dixitque ad eos:And he said to them,Testis est Dominus adversum vos,“The Lord is a witness against you,et testis christus ejus in die hac,and his Christ is a witness this day, quia non inveneritis in manu mea quippiam.that you have not found anything in my hand.”Et dixerunt:And they said,Testis.“He is the witness.”
Et ait Samuel ad populum:And Samuel said to the people:Dominus,“It is the Lord who appointed Mosesqui fecit Moysen et Aaron, and Aaron,et eduxit patres nostros de terra Ægypti.and who led our fathers away from the land of Egypt.
Nunc ergo state,Now therefore, stand,ut judicio contendam adversum vos coram Domino de omnibus misericordiis Domini quas fecit vobiscum et cum patribus vestris:so that I may contend in judgment against you before the Lord, about all the mercies of the Lord, which he has given to you and to your fathers:
quomodo Jacob ingressus est in Ægyptum,How Jacob entered into Egypt,et clamaverunt patres vestri ad Dominum:and your fathers cried out to the Lord.et misit Dominus Moysen et Aaron,And the Lord sent Moses and Aaron,et eduxit patres vestros de Ægypto, and he led your fathers away from Egypt,et collocavit eos in loco hoc.and he transferred them to this place.
Qui obliti sunt Domini Dei sui,But they forgot the Lord their God,et tradidit eos in manu Sisaræ magistri militiæ Hasor, and so he delivered them into the hand of Sisera, master of the army of Hazor,et in manu Philisthinorum, and into the hand of the Philistines,et in manu regis Moab: et pugnaverunt adversum eos.and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them.
Postea autem clamaverunt ad Dominum,But afterward, they cried out to the Lord,et dixerunt:and they said:Peccavimus,‘We have sinned, quia dereliquimus Dominum, because we have forsaken the Lord,et servivimus Baalim et Astaroth:and we have served the Baals and Ashtaroth.nunc ergo erue nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum,Now therefore, rescue us from the hand of our enemies,et serviemus tibi.and we will serve you.’
Et misit Dominus Jerobaal,And the Lord sent Jerubbaal,et Badan, and Bedan,et Jephte, and Jephthah,et Samuel, and Samuel,et eruit vos de manu inimicorum vestrorum per circuitum, and he rescued you from the hand of your enemies all around,et habitastis confidenter.and you lived in confidence.
Videntes autem quod Naas rex filiorum Ammon venisset adversum vos,Then, seeing that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, dixistis mihi:had arrived against you, you said to me,Nequaquam,‘By no means!sed rex imperabit nobis:Instead, a king shall reign over us,’cum Dominus Deus vester regnaret in vobis.even though the Lord your God was reigning over you.
Nunc ergo præsto est rex vester,Now therefore, your king is present, quem elegistis et petistis:whom you chose and requested.ecce dedit vobis Dominus regem.Behold, the Lord has given you a king.
Si timueritis Dominum,If you will fear the Lord,et servieritis ei,and serve him,et audieritis vocem ejus, and listen to his voice,et non exasperaveritis os Domini, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord, eritis et vos, then both you,et rex qui imperat vobis, and the king who rules over you, sequentes Dominum Deum vestrum:will be following the Lord your God.
si autem non audieritis vocem Domini,But if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord, sed exasperaveritis sermones ejus, but instead you provoke his words, erit manus Domini super vos, then the hand of the Lord will be over youet super patres vestros.and over your fathers.
Sed et nunc state,Therefore, stand now,et videte rem istam grandem quam facturus est Dominus in conspectu vestro.and see this great thing, which the Lord will accomplish in your sight.
Numquid non messis tritici est hodie? Is it not the harvest of the wheat today?invocabo Dominum,I will call upon the Lord,et dabit voces et pluvias:and he will send thunderet scietis, and rain.et videbitis,And you will knowquia grande malum feceritis vobis in conspectu Domini, and see that you have done a great evil in the sight of the Lord, petentes super vos regem.by petitioning for a king over you.”
Et clamavit Samuel ad Dominum,And Samuel cried out to the Lord,et dedit Dominus voces et pluvias in illa die.and the Lord sent thunder and rain on that day.
Et timuit omnis populus nimis Dominum et Samuelem,And all the people feared the Lord and Samuel exceedingly.et dixit universus populus ad Samuelem:And all the people said to Samuel: “Pray,Ora pro servis tuis ad Dominum Deum tuum,on behalf of your servants, to the Lord your God,ut non moriamur:so that we may not die.addidimus enim universis peccatis nostris malum, ut peteremus nobis regem. For we have added to all our sins this evil, that we would petition for a king.”
Dixit autem Samuel ad populum:Then Samuel said to the people:Nolite timere:“Do not be afraid.vos fecistis universum malum hoc,You have done all this evil. Yet truly, verumtamen nolite recedere a tergo Domini,do not choose to withdraw from the back of the Lord.sed servite Domino in omni corde vestro.Instead, serve the Lord with all your heart.
Et nolite declinare post vana,And do not choose to turn aside after vanities,quæ non proderunt vobis, which will never benefit you, neque eruent vos,nor rescue you, quia vana sunt.since they are empty.
Et non derelinquet Dominus populum suum propter nomen suum magnum:And the Lord will not abandon his people, because of his great name.quia juravit Dominus facere vos sibi populum. For the Lord has sworn to make you his people.
Absit autem a me hoc peccatum in Dominum,So then, far be it from me, this sin against the Lord,ut cessem orare pro vobis, that I would cease to pray for you.et docebo vos viam bonam et rectam. And so, I will teach you the good and upright way.
Igitur timete Dominum,Therefore,et servite ei in veritate, fear the Lord,et ex toto corde vestro:and serve him in truth and from your whole heart.vidistis enim magnifica quæ in vobis gesserit. For you have seen the great works that he has done among you.
Quod si perseveraveritis in malitia,But if you persevere in wickedness,et vos et rex vester pariter peribitis.both you and your king will perish together.”
