Et factum est quasi post mensem,And,ascendit Naas Ammonites, about a month afterward,et pugnare cœpit adversum Jabes Galaad.it happened that Nahash the Ammonite ascended and began to fight against Jabesh Gilead.Dixeruntque omnes viri Jabes ad Naas:And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash,Habeto nos fœderatos,“Consider a pact with us,et serviemus tibi.and we will serve you.”

Et respondit ad eos Naas Ammonites:And Nahash the Ammonite responded to them,In hoc feriam vobiscum fœdus,“With this will I strike a pact with you:ut eruam omnium vestrum oculos dextros,if I may pluck out all your right eyes, ponamque vos opprobrium in universo Israël.and set you as a disgrace against all of Israel.”

Et dixerunt ad eum seniores Jabes:And the elders of Jabesh said to him:Concede nobis septem dies,“Grant to us seven days,ut mittamus nuntios ad universos terminos Israël,so that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel.et si non fuerit qui defendat nos,And if there is no one who may defend us,egrediemur ad te.we will go out to you.”

Venerunt ergo nuntii in Gabaa Saulis:Therefore,et locuti sunt verba hæc,the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul.audiente populo:And they spoke these words in the hearing of the people.et levavit omnis populus vocem suam,And all the people lifted up their voiceet flevit.and wept.

Et ecce Saul veniebat,And behold, Saul arrived, sequens boves de agro, following oxen from the field.et ait:And he said,Quid habet populus quod plorat?“What has happened to the people that they would weep?”Et narraverunt ei verba virorum Jabes. And they explained to him the words of the men from Jabesh.

Et insilivit spiritus Domini in Saul cum audisset verba hæc,And the Spirit of the Lord rose up within Saul when he had heard these words,et iratus est furor ejus nimis.and his fury was enraged exceedingly.

Et assumens utrumque bovem,And taking both the oxen, concidit in frustra,he cut them into pieces, misitque in omnes terminos Israël per manum nuntiorum, and he sent them into all the borders of Israel, dicens:by the hands of messengers,Quicumque non exierit, saying,et secutus fuerit Saul“Whoever will not go out and follow Saul and Samuel,et Samuel,so shall it be done to his oxen.”sic fiet bobus ejus. Therefore,Invasit ergo timor Domini populum, the fear of the Lord entered into the people,et egressi sunt quasi vir unus.and they went out like one man.

Et recensuit eos in Bezech:And he took a census of them at Bezek.fueruntque filiorum Israël trecenta millia,And there were three hundred thousand of the sons of Israel.virorum autem Juda triginta millia. And there were thirty thousand of the men of Judah.

Et dixerunt nuntiis qui venerant:And they said to the messengers who had arrived:Sic dicetis viris qui sunt in Jabes Galaad:“So shall you say to the men who are of Jabesh Gilead:Cras erit vobis salus,‘Tomorrow, when the sun will be hot,cum incaluerit sol.you shall have salvation.’”Venerunt ergo nuntii, et annuntiaverunt viris Jabes:Therefore, the messengers went and announced it to the men of Jabesh, qui lætati sunt.who became joyful.

Et dixerunt:And they said,Mane exibimus ad vos:“In the morning, we will go out to you.et facietis nobis omne quod placuerit vobis. And you may do whatever you please with us.”

Et factum est,And it happened that, cum dies crastinus venisset, when the next day had arrived, constituit Saul populum in tres partes:Saul arranged the people into three parts.et ingressus est media castra in vigilia matutina,And he entered into the middle of the camp at the early morning watch,et percussit Ammon usque dum incalesceret dies:and he struck down the Ammonites until the day grew hot.reliqui autem dispersi sunt,Then the remainder were dispersed, ita ut non relinquerentur in eis duo pariter.so much so that not even two of them were left together.

Et ait populus ad Samuelem:And the people said to Samuel:Quis est iste qui dixit:“Who is the one who said,Saul num regnabit super nos?‘Should Saul reign over us?’Date viros,Present the men,et interficiemus eos.and we will put them to death.”

Et ait Saul:And Saul said:Non occidetur quisquam in die hac,“No one shall be killed on this day.quia hodie fecit Dominus salutem in Israël.For today the Lord has accomplished salvation in Israel.”

Dixit autem Samuel ad populum:Then Samuel said to the people,Venite,“Come,et eamus in Galgala, and let us go to Gilgal,et innovemus ibi regnum.and let us renew the kingdom there.”

Et perrexit omnis populus in Galgala,And all the people traveled to Gilgal.et fecerunt ibi regem Saul coram Domino in Galgala,And there they made Saul king, in the sight of the Lord at Gilgal.et immolaverunt ibi victimas pacificas coram Domino. And there they immolated victims of peace, before the Lord.Et lætatus est ibi Saul, et cuncti viri Israël nimis. And there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced exceedingly.
