Et accidit quadam die ut diceret Jonathas filius Saul ad adolescentem armigerum suum: Veni, et transeamus ad stationem Philisthinorum, quæ est trans locum illum. Patri autem suo hoc ipsum non indicavit. And it happened that, on a certain day, Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the youth who bore his armor, “Come, and let us go over to the garrison of the Philistines, which is across from that place.” But he did not reveal this to his father.

Porro Saul morabatur in extrema parte Gabaa sub malogranato,Moreover, Saul was staying in the furthermost part of Gibeah,quæ erat in Magron: et erat populus cum eo quasi sexcentorum virorum.below the pomegranate tree that was at Migron. And the people with him were about six hundred men.

Et Achias filius Achitob fratris Ichabod filii Phinees,And Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, the brother of Ichabod, qui ortus fuerat ex Heli sacerdote Domini in Silo, the son of Phinehas, who had been born of Eli, the priest of the Lord at Shiloh, portabat ephod.wore the ephod.Sed et populus ignorabat quo isset Jonathas. But the people did not know where Jonathan had gone.

Erant autem inter ascensus per quos nitebatur Jonathas transire ad stationem Philisthinorum,Now there were, between the ascents along which Jonathan strove to cross to the garrison of the Philistines, eminentes petræ ex utraque parte, rocks projecting from both sides, and,et quasi in modum dentium scopuli hinc et inde prærupti:in the manner of teeth, boulders breaking out from one side and the other.nomen uni Boses,The name of one was Shining,et nomen alteri Sene:and the name of the other was Thorny.

unus scopulus prominens ad aquilonem ex adverso Machmas,One boulder projected toward the north, opposite Michmash,et alter ad meridiem contra Gabaa.and the other toward the south, opposite Gibeah.

Dixit autem Jonathas ad adolescentem armigerum suum:Then Jonathan said to the youth who bore his armor:Veni,“Come, transeamus ad stationem incircumcisorum horum, let us go across to the garrison of these uncircumcised.si forte faciat Dominus pro nobis:And perhaps the Lord may act on our behalf.quia non est Domino difficile salvare,For it is not difficult for the Lord to save, vel in multis, either by many, vel in paucis.or by few.”

Dixitque ei armiger suus:And his armor bearer said to him:Fac omnia quæ placent animo tuo:“Do all that is pleasing to your soul.perge quo cupis,Go wherever you wish,et ero tecum ubicumque volueris.and I will be with you, wherever you will choose.”

Et ait Jonathas:And Jonathan said:Ecce nos transimus ad viros istos.“Behold, we will cross over to these men.Cumque apparuerimus eis,And when we will be seen by them,

si taliter locuti fuerint ad nos:if they have spoken to us in this way,Manete donec veniamus ad vos:‘Stay until we come to you,’stemus in loco nostro, let us stand still in our place, nec ascendamus ad eos.and not ascend to them.

Si autem dixerint:But if they will say,Ascendite ad nos:‘Ascend to us,’ascendamus, let us ascend.quia tradidit eos Dominus in manibus nostris:For the Lord has delivered them into our hands.hoc erit nobis signum. This will be the sign to us.”

Apparuit igitur uterque stationi Philisthinorum:And so, both of them appeared before the garrison of the Philistines.dixeruntque Philisthiim:And the Philistines said, “See,En Hebræi egrediuntur de cavernis in quibus absconditi fuerant.the Hebrews have come out from the holes in which they had been hiding.”

Et locuti sunt viri de statione ad Jonathan et ad armigerum ejus,And the men of the garrison spoke to Jonathan and to his armor bearer, dixeruntque:and they said,Ascendite ad nos,“Ascend to us,et ostendemus vobis rem.and we will show you something.”Et ait Jonathas ad armigerum suum:And Jonathan said to his armor bearer:Ascendamus:“Let us ascend.sequere me:Follow me.tradidit enim Dominus eos in manus Israël.For the Lord has delivered them into the hands of Israel.”

Ascendit autem Jonathas manibus et pedibus reptans,Then Jonathan ascended, crawling on his hands and feet,et armiger ejus post eum.and his armor bearer after him.Itaque alii cadebant ante Jonathan,And then, some fell before Jonathan, alios armiger ejus interficiebat sequens eum.others his armor bearer killed as he was following him.

Et facta est plaga prima qua percussit Jonathas et armiger ejus,And the first slaughter was made when Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty of the men, quasi viginti virorum in media parte jugeri quam par boum in die arare consuevit.in the midst of an area of land that a yoke of oxen would usually plow in a day.

Et factum est miraculum in castris per agros:And a miracle occurred in the camp, out in the fields.sed et omnis populus stationis eorum qui ierant ad prædandum,And all of the people of their garrison, who had gone out in order to plunder, obstupuit, et conturbata est terra:were stupefied. And the earth trembled.et accidit quasi miraculum a Deo.And it happened as a miracle from God.

Et respexerunt speculatores Saul qui erant in Gabaa Benjamin,And the watchmen of Saul, who were at Gibeah of Benjamin, looked out,et ecce multitudo prostrata, and behold, a multitude was thrown down and dispersed,et huc illucque diffugiens.this way and that.

Et ait Saul populo qui erat cum eo:And Saul said to the people who were with him,Requirite, et videte quis abierit ex nobis.“Inquire and see who has gone out from us.”Cumque requisissent,And when they had inquired, repertum est non adesse Jonathan et armigerum ejus.it was found that Jonathan and his armor bearer were not present.

Et ait Saul ad Achiam:And Saul said to Ahijah,Applica arcam Dei.“Bring the ark of the God.”(Erat enim ibi arca Dei in die illa cum filiis Israël.)(For the ark of God was, in that day, with the sons of Israel in that place.)

Cumque loqueretur Saul ad sacerdotem,And while Saul spoke to the priest, tumultus magnus exortus est in castris Philisthinorum:there arose a great tumult in the camp of the Philistines. And it was increasing, crescebatque paulatim, et clarius resonabat.little by little, and it was being heard more clearly.Et ait Saul ad sacerdotem:And Saul said to the priest,Contrahe manum tuam.“Withdraw your hand.”

Conclamavit ergo Saul, et omnis populus qui erat cum eo,Then Saul, and all the people who were with him,et venerunt usque ad locum certaminis:cried out together, and they went to the place of the conflict.et ecce versus fuerat gladius uniuscujusque ad proximum suum,And behold, each one’s sword had been turned against his neighbor,et cædes magna nimis.and there was a very great slaughter.

Sed et Hebræi qui fuerant cum Philisthiim heri et nudiustertius,Moreover, the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines yesterday and the day before, ascenderantque cum eis in castris, and who had ascended with them into the camp, reversi sunt ut essent cum Israël qui erant cum Saul et Jonatha.turned back so that they might be with those of Israel who were with Saul and Jonathan.

Omnes quoque Israëlitæ qui se absconderant in monte Ephraim,Likewise, all the Israelites who had hidden themselves on mount Ephraim, audientes quod fugissent Philisthæi,hearing that the Philistines had fled, sociaverunt se cum suis in prælio.joined themselves with their own in the battle.Et erant cum Saul quasi decem millia virorum. And there were with Saul about ten thousand men.

Et salvavit Dominus in die illa Israël:And the Lord saved Israel on that day.pugna autem pervenit usque ad Bethaven. But the fight continued as far as Bethaven.

Et viri Israël sociati sunt sibi in die illa:And the men of Israel were joined together on that day.adjuravit autem Saul populum,And Saul made the people swear, dicens:saying,Maledictus vir qui comederit panem usque ad vesperam,“Cursed be the man who will eat bread, until evening, donec ulciscar de inimicis meis.until I am avenged of my enemies.”Et non manducavit universus populus panem:And the entire people did not consume bread.

omneque terræ vulgus venit in saltum,And all the common people went into a forest,in quo erat mel super faciem agri.in which there was honey on the surface of the field.

Ingressus est itaque populus saltum,And so the people entered the forest,et apparuit fluens mel,and there appeared flowing honey, nullusque applicuit manum ad os suum:but no one drew his hand near his mouth.timebat enim populus juramentum. For the people were afraid of the oath.

Porro Jonathas non audierat cum adjuraret pater ejus populum:But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people to an oath.extenditque summitatem virgæ quam habebat in manu,And so he extended the top of the staff that he was holding in his hand,et intinxit in favum mellis:and he dipped it in a honeycomb.et convertit manum suam ad os suum,And he turned his hand to his mouth,et illuminati sunt oculi ejus.and his eyes were brightened.

Respondensque unus de populo,And in response, ait:one of the people said,Jurejurando constrinxit pater tuus populum,“Your father has bound the people by an oath, dicens:saying:Maledictus vir qui comederit panem hodie.‘Cursed be the man who will eat any bread this day.’”(Defecerat autem populus.)(For the people were faint.)

Dixitque Jonathas:And Jonathan said:Turbavit pater meus terram:“My father has troubled the land.vidistis ipsi quia illuminati sunt oculi mei,You have seen for yourselves that my eyes were brightened,eo quod gustaverim paululum de melle isto:because I tasted a little of this honey.

quanto magis si comedisset populus de præda inimicorum suorum,How much more so,quam reperit?if the people had eaten from the plunder that they find with their enemies?nonne major plaga facta fuisset in Philisthiim?Would not a greater slaughter have been accomplished among the Philistines?”

Percusserunt ergo in die illa Philisthæos a Machmis usque in Ajalon. Defatigatus est autem populus nimis:Therefore, on that day, they struck down the Philistines, from Michmash as far as Aijalon. But the people were exceedingly wearied.

et versus ad prædam tulit oves,And turning to the spoils, they took sheep,et boves, and oxen,et vitulos, and calves,et mactaverunt in terra:and they slew them on the ground.comeditque populus cum sanguine. And the people ate with blood.

Nuntiaverunt autem Sauli dicentes quod populus peccasset Domino,Then they reported to Saul, saying that the people had sinned against the Lord, comedens cum sanguine. Qui ait:eating with blood. And he said:Prævaricati estis:“You have transgressed.volvite ad me jam nunc saxum grande.Roll a great stone to me, here and now.”

Et dixit Saul: Dispergimini in vulgus,And Saul said: “Disperse yourselves among the common people,et dicite eis ut adducat ad me unusquisque bovem suum et arietem, and tell each one of them to bring to me his ox and his ram, and to slay them upon this stone, and to eat,et occidite super istud,so that you will not sin against the Lord,et vescimini,in eating with blood.”et non peccabitis Domino comedentes cum sanguine. And so, each one, out of all the people,Adduxit itaque omnis populus unusquisque bovem in manu sua usque ad noctem:brought his ox, by his own hand, throughout the night.et occiderunt ibi.And they slew them there.

Ædificavit autem Saul altare Domino,Then Saul built an altar to the Lord. And so,tuncque primum cœpit ædificare altare Domino.it was then that he first began to build an altar to the Lord.

Et dixit Saul:And Saul said:Irruamus super Philisthæos nocte,“Let us fall upon the Philistines by night,et vastemus eos usque dum illucescat mane, and lay waste to them even until the morning light.nec relinquamus ex eis virum. And let us not leave behind a man among them.”Dixitque populus:And the people said,Omne quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac.“Do all that seems good in your eyes.” And the priest said,Et ait sacerdos: Accedamus huc ad Deum.“Let us draw near to God in this place.”

Et consuluit Saul Dominum:And Saul consulted the Lord:Num persequar Philisthiim?“Shall I pursue the Philistines?si trades eos in manus Israël?Will you deliver them into the hands of Israel?”Et non respondit ei in die illa. And he did not respond to him on that day.

Dixitque Saul:And Saul said:Applicate huc universos angulos populi:“Bring here every single leader of the people.et scitote,And we shall knowet videte per quem acciderit peccatum hoc hodie.and see by whom this sin was committed this day.

Vivit Dominus salvator Israël,As the Lord lives, who is the Savior of Israel, quia si per Jonathan filium meum factum est, even if it were done by my son Jonathan, absque retractione morietur.without retraction he shall die.”Ad quod nullus contradixit ei de omni populo. In this, no one among all the people contradicted him.

Et ait ad universum Israël:And he said to all of Israel,Separamini vos in partem unam,“Separate yourselves on one side,et ego cum Jonatha filio meo ero in parte altera.and I, with my son Jonathan, will be on the other side.”Responditque populus ad Saul:And the people responded to Saul,Quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac.“Do what seems good in your eyes.”

Et dixit Saul ad Dominum Deum Israël:And Saul said to the Lord,Domine Deus Israël,the God of Israel:da indicium:“O Lord, quid est quod non responderis servo tuo hodie?God of Israel,si in me,grant a sign:aut in Jonatha filio meo,Why is it that you will not respond to your servant this day?est iniquitas hæc,If this iniquity is in me,da ostensionem:or in my son Jonathan, aut si hæc iniquitas est in populo tuo, grant an indication.da sanctitatem.Or if this iniquity is in your people,Et deprehensus est Jonathasgrant a sanctification.”et Saul:And Jonathan and Saul were discovered, populus autem exivit.but the people were released.

Et ait Saul:And Saul said,Mittite sortem inter me“Cast lots between myself and Jonathan,et inter Jonathan filium meum.my son.”Et captus est Jonathas. And Jonathan was caught.

Dixit autem Saul ad Jonathan:Then Saul said to Jonathan,Indica mihi quid feceris.“Tell me what you have done.”Et indicavit ei Jonathas,And Jonathan revealed to him,et ait:and said:Gustans gustavi in summitate virgæ quæ erat in manu mea, paululum mellis,“Truly, I tasted a little honey with the top of the staff that was in my hand.et ecce ego morior. And behold, I shall die.”

Et ait Saul:And Saul said,Hæc faciat mihi Deus,“May God do these things to me,et hæc addat, and may he add these other things, quia morte morieris, for you shall surely die,Jonatha.Jonathan!”

Dixitque populus ad Saul:And the people said to Saul:Ergone Jonathas morietur,“Why should Jonathan have to die,qui fecit salutem hanc magnam in Israël?who has accomplished this great salvation in Israel?hoc nefas est:This is wrong.vivit Dominus,As the Lord lives,si ceciderit capillus de capite ejus in terram, not one hair of his head should fall to the ground.quia cum Deo operatus est hodie. For he has wrought with God this day.”Liberavit ergo populus Jonathan,Therefore, the people freed Jonathan,ut non moreretur.so that he would not die.

Recessitque Saul,And Saul withdrew, nec persecutus est Philisthiim:and he did not pursue the Philistines.porro Philisthiim abierunt in loca sua.And the Philistines went away to their own places.

Et Saul,And Saul, confirmato regno super Israël,his kingdom having been confirmed over Israel, pugnabat per circuitum adversum omnes inimicos ejus, was fighting against all his enemies on all sides:contra Moab, against Moab,et filios Ammon, and the sons of Ammon,et Edom, and Edom,et reges Soba, and the kings of Zobah,et Philisthæos:and the Philistines.et quocumque se verterat,And wherever he turned himself, superabat.he was successful.

Congregatoque exercitu,And gathering together an army, percussit Amalec,he struck Amalek.et eruit Israël de manu vastatorum ejus. And he rescued Israel from the hand of those who would lay waste to them.

Fuerunt autem filii Saul,Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan,Jonathas, and Ishvi,et Jessui, and Malchishua.et Melchisua: et nomina duarum filiarum ejus,And as for the names of his two daughters:nomen primogenitæ Merob, the name of the firstborn daughter was Merab,et nomen minoris Michol.and the name of the younger one was Michal.

Et nomen uxoris Saul Achinoam filia Achimaas:And the name of the wife of Saul was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz.et nomen principis militiæ ejus Abner filius Ner,And the name of the first ruler of his military was Abner, the son of Ner,patruelis Saul.the first cousin of Saul.

Porro Cis fuit pater Saul,For Kish was the father of Saul,et Ner pater Abner, and Ner was the father of Abner, filius Abiel.and the son of Abiel.

Erat autem bellum potens adversum Philisthæos omnibus diebus Saul. Now there was a powerful war against the Philistines during all the days of Saul.Nam quemcumque viderat Saul virum fortem,And so, whomever Saul had seen to be a strong man,et aptum ad prælium, and fit for battle, sociabat eum sibi.he joined him to himself.
