Et dixit Samuel ad Saul:And Samuel said to Saul:Me misit Dominus ut ungerem te in regem super populum ejus Israël:“The Lord sent me, so that I would anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now therefore, nunc ergo audi vocem Domini.listen to the voice of the Lord.

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum: Recensui quæcumque fecit Amalec Israëli:‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: I have taken account of all that Amalek has done to Israel, quomodo restitit ei in via cum ascenderet de Ægypto.how he stood against him in the way, when he ascended from Egypt.

Nunc ergo vade,Now therefore,et percute Amalec,go and strike Amalek,et demolire universa ejus:and demolish all that is his.non parcas ei,You shall not spare him,et non concupiscas ex rebus ipsius aliquid, and you shall not covet anything out of the things that are his.sed interfice a viro usque ad mulierem,Instead, kill from man even to woman,et parvulum atque lactentem, and little ones as well as infants, bovem et ovem,ox and sheep, camelum et asinum.camel and donkey.’”

Præcepit itaque Saul populo,And so, Saul instructed the people,et recensuit eos quasi agnos:and he numbered them like lambs:ducenta millia peditum, two hundred thousand foot soldiers,et decem millia virorum Juda.and ten thousand men of Judah.

Cumque venisset Saul usque ad civitatem Amalec,And when Saul had arrived as far as the city of Amalek, tetendit insidias in torrente.he placed ambushes at the torrent.

Dixitque Saul Cinæo:And Saul said to the Kenite:Abite, recedite,“Go away, withdraw, atque descendite ab Amalec, and descend from Amalek. Otherwise,ne forte involvam te cum eo:I will include you with him.tu enim fecisti misericordiam cum omnibus filiis Israël,For you showed mercy to all the sons of Israel, cum ascenderent de Ægypto.when they ascended from Egypt.”Et recessit Cinæus de medio Amalec. And so the Kenite withdrew from the midst of Amalek.

Percussitque Saul Amalec ab Hevila donec venias ad Sur,And Saul struck down Amalek, from Havilah even until you arrive at Shur,quæ est e regione Ægypti.which is opposite the region of Egypt.

Et apprehendit Agag regem Amalec vivum:And he apprehended Agag, the king of Amalek, alive.omne autem vulgus interfecit in ore gladii. But all the common people he put to death with the edge of the sword.

Et pepercit Saul et populus Agag,And Saul and the people spared Agag,et optimis gregibus ovium et armentorum, and the best of the flocks of sheep, and of the herds,et vestibus et arietibus, and the garments, and the rams,et universis quæ pulchra erant, nec voluerunt disperdere ea:and all that was beautiful, and they were not willing to destroy them.quidquid vero vile fuit et reprobum,Yet truly, whatever was vile or worthless, hoc demoliti sunt.these they demolished.

Factum est autem verbum Domini ad Samuel,Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, dicens:saying

Pœnitet me quod constituerim Saul regem:“It displeases me that I have appointed Saul as king.quia dereliquit me,For he has forsaken me,et verba mea opere non implevit.and he has not fulfilled the work of my words.”Contristatusque est Samuel,And Samuel was greatly saddened,et clamavit ad Dominum tota nocte.and he cried out to the Lord, all night long

Cumque de nocte surrexisset Samuel ut iret ad Saul mane,And when Samuel had risen while it was still dark, so that he might go to Saul in the morning, nuntiatum est Samueli eo quod venisset Saul in Carmelum,it was reported to Samuel that Saul had arrived at Carmel,et erexisset sibi fornicem triumphalem, and that he had erected for himself a triumphant arch. And,et reversus transisset, descendissetque in Galgala.while returning, he had continued on and descended to Gilgal.Venit ergo Samuel ad Saul,Therefore, Samuel went to Saul.et Saul offerebat holocaustum Domino de initiis prædarum quæ attulerat ex Amalec. And Saul was offering a holocaust to the Lord, from the best of the spoils, which he had brought from Amalek.

Et cum venisset Samuel ad Saul,And when Samuel had gone to Saul, dixit ei Saul:Saul said to him:Benedictus tu Domino:“You are the blessed of the Lord.implevi verbum Domini.I have fulfilled the word of the Lord.”

Dixitque Samuel:And Samuel said,Et quæ est hæc vox gregum,“Then what is this voice of the flocks,quæ resonat in auribus meis, which resounds in my ears,et armentorum, and of the herds, quam ego audio?which I am hearing?”

Et ait Saul:And Saul said:De Amalec adduxerunt ea:“They have brought these from Amalek.pepercit enim populus melioribus ovibus et armentis ut immolarentur Domino Deo tuo,For the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds, so that they might be immolated to the Lord your God. Yet truly, reliqua vero occidimus.the remainder we have slain.”

Ait autem Samuel ad Saul:Then Samuel said to Saul,Sine me,“Permit me,et indicabo tibi quæ locutus sit Dominus ad me nocte.and I will reveal to you what the Lord has said to me this night.”Dixitque ei:And he said to him,Loquere.“Speak.”

Et ait Samuel:And Samuel said:Nonne cum parvulus esses in oculis tuis, caput in tribubus Israël factus es?“Was it not when you were little in your own eyes that you were made the head of the tribes of Israel?unxitque te Dominus in regem super Israël,And the Lord anointed you as king over Israel.

et misit te Dominus in viam,And the Lord sent you on the way,et ait:and he said:Vade,‘Go and put to death the sinners of Amalek.et interfice peccatores Amalec,And you shall fight against them,et pugnabis contra eos usque ad internecionem eorum?even unto utter annihilation.’

Quare ergo non audisti vocem Domini:Why then, did you not listen to the voice of the Lord?sed versus ad prædam es,Instead, you turned to the spoils,et fecisti malum in oculis Domini?and you did evil in the eyes of the Lord.”

Et ait Saul ad Samuelem:And Saul said to Samuel: “On the contrary,Immo audivi vocem Domini,I did listen to the voice of the Lord,et ambulavi in via per quam misit me Dominus, and I walked in the way along which the Lord sent me,et adduxi Agag regem Amalec, and I led back Agag, the king of Amalek,et Amalec interfeci.and I put to death Amalek.

Tulit autem de præda populus ovesBut the people took some of the spoils,et boves, sheep and oxen, primitias eorum quæ cæsa sunt,as the first-fruits of those things that were slain,ut immolet Domino Deo suo in Galgalis.to immolate to the Lord their God at Gilgal.”

Et ait Samuel:And Samuel said:Numquid vult Dominus holocausta et victimas,“Does the Lord want holocausts and victims,et non potius ut obediatur voci Domini?and not instead that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed?melior est enim obedientia quam victimæ,For obedience is better than sacrifice.et auscultare magis quam offerre adipem arietum. And to heed is greater than to offer the fat of rams.

Quoniam quasi peccatum ariolandi est,Therefore, it is like the sin of paganism to rebel.repugnare: et quasi scelus idololatriæ,And it is like the crime of idolatry to refuse to obey.nolle acquiescere. For this reason, therefore,Pro eo ergo quod abjecisti sermonem Domini, because you have rejected the word of the Lord, abjecit te Dominus ne sis rex.the Lord has also rejected you from being king.”

Dixitque Saul ad Samuelem:And Saul said to Samuel:Peccavi,“I have sinned, quia prævaricatus sum sermonem Domini et verba tua,for I have transgressed the word of the Lord, timens populum, and your words,et obediens voci eorum.by fearing the people and obeying their voice.

Sed nunc porta,But now,quæso,I beg you, peccatum meum,to bear my sin,et revertere mecum, and to return with me,ut adorem Dominum.so that I may adore the Lord.”

Et ait Samuel ad Saul:And Samuel said to Saul:Non revertar tecum,“I will not return with you.quia projecisti sermonem Domini,For you have rejected the word of the Lord,et projecit te Dominus ne sis rex super Israël.and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

Et conversus est Samuel ut abiret:And Samuel turned away, ille autem apprehendit summitatem pallii ejus,so that he might depart.quæBut Saul took hold of the edge of his cloak,et scissa est.and it tore.

Et ait ad eum Samuel:And Samuel said to him:Scidit Dominus regnum Israël a te hodie,“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you this day.et tradidit illud proximo tuo meliori te.And he has delivered it to your neighbor, who is better than you are.

Porro triumphator in Israël non parcet,Moreover, the One who triumphs within Israel will not spare,et pœnitudine non flectetur:and he will not be moved to repentance.neque enim homo est ut agat pœnitentiam. For he is not a man, that he should repent.”

At ille ait: Peccavi:Then he said: “I have sinned.sed nunc honora me coram senioribus populi mei et coram Israël,But now, honor me before the elders of my people, and before Israel,et revertere mecum, and return with me,ut adorem Dominum Deum tuum.so that I may adore the Lord your God.”

Reversus ergo Samuel secutus est Saulem:Therefore, Samuel turned again after Saul.et adoravit Saul Dominum. And Saul adored the Lord.

Dixitque Samuel:And Samuel said,Adducite ad me Agag regem Amalec.“Bring near to me Agag, the king of Amalek.”Et oblatus est ei Agag,And Agag, very fat and trembling, pinguissimus et tremens.was presented to him. And Agag said,Et dixit Agag: Siccine separat amara mors?“Does bitter death separate in this manner?”

Et ait Samuel:And Samuel said,Sicut fecit absque liberis mulieres gladius tuus,“Just as your sword caused women to be without their children, sic absque liberis erit inter mulieres mater tua.so will your mother be without her children among women.”Et in frustra concidit eum Samuel coram Domino in Galgalis. And Samuel cut him into pieces, before the Lord at Gilgal.

Abiit autem Samuel in Ramatha:Then Samuel went away to Ramah.Saul vero ascendit in domum suam in Gabaa. But Saul ascended to his house at Gibeah.

Et non vidit Samuel ultra Saul usque ad diem mortis suæ:And Samuel did not see Saul any more, until the day of his death.verumtamen lugebat Samuel Saulem,Yet truly, Samuel mourned for Saul, quoniam Dominum pœnitebat quod constituisset eum regem super Israël.because the Lord regretted that he had appointed him as king over Israel.
