Dixitque Dominus ad Samuelem:And the Lord said to Samuel:Usquequo tu luges Saul,“How long will you mourn for Saul, cum ego projecerim eum ne regnet super Israël?though I have rejected him,Imple cornu tuum oleo,so that he would not reign over Israel?et veni,Fill your horn with oil and approach,ut mittam te ad Isai Bethlehemitem:so that I may send you to Jesse of Bethlehem.providi enim in filiis ejus mihi regem. For I have provided a king from among his sons for myself.”
Et ait Samuel:And Samuel said:Quomodo vadam?“How shall I go?audiet enim Saul,For Saul will hear of it,et interficiet me.and he will put me to death.”Et ait Dominus:And the Lord said:Vitulum de armento tolles in manu tua,“You shall take, by your hand, a calf from the herd.et dices:And you shall say,Ad immolandum Domino veni.‘I have arrived in order to immolate to the Lord.’
Et vocabis Isai ad victimam,And you shall call Jesse to the sacrifice,et ego ostendam tibi quid facias, and I will reveal to you what you should do.et unges quemcumque monstravero tibi. And you shall anoint whomever I will indicate to you.”
Fecit ergo Samuel sicut locutus est ei Dominus. Therefore, Samuel did just as the Lord told him.Venitque in Bethlehem,And he went to Bethlehem,et admirati sunt seniores civitatis occurrentes ei:and the elders of the city wondered. And meeting him, dixeruntque:they said,Pacificusne est ingressus tuus?“Is your arrival peaceful?”
Et ait:And he said:Pacificus:“It is peaceful.ad immolandum Domino veni:I have arrived in order to immolate to the Lord.sanctificamini,Be sanctified,et venite mecum ut immolem.and come with me to the sacrifice.”Sanctificavit ergo Isai et filios ejus,Then he sanctified Jesse and his sons,et vocavit eos ad sacrificium.and he called them to the sacrifice.
Cumque ingressi essent,And when they had entered, vidit Eliab,he saw Eliab,et ait:and he said,Num coram Domino est christus ejus?“Could he be the Christ in the sight of the Lord?”
Et dixit Dominus ad Samuelem:And the Lord said to Samuel:Ne respicias vultum ejus,“You should not look with favor on his face, neque altitudinem staturæ ejus:nor on the height of his stature.quoniam abjeci eum,For I have rejected him.nec juxta intuitum hominis ego judico:Neither do I judge by the appearance of a man.homo enim videt ea quæ parent,For man sees those things that are apparent,Dominus autem intuetur cor.but the Lord beholds the heart.”
Et vocavit Isai Abinadab,And Jesse called Abinadab,et adduxit eum coram Samuele.and he brought him before Samuel.Qui dixit:And he said,Nec hunc elegit Dominus.“Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
Adduxit autem Isai Samma,Then Jesse brought Shammah.de quo ait:And he said about him,Etiam hunc non elegit Dominus.“And the Lord has not chosen this one.”
Adduxit itaque Isai septem filios suos coram Samuele:And so Jesse brought his seven sons before Samuel.et ait Samuel ad Isai:And Samuel said to Jesse,Non elegit Dominus ex istis.“The Lord has not chosen any of these.”
Dixitque Samuel ad Isai:And Samuel said to Jesse,Numquid jam completi sunt filii?“Could the sons now be completed?”Qui respondit:But he responded,Adhuc reliquus est parvulus,“There still remains a little one,et pascit oves.and he pastures the sheep.”Et ait Samuel ad Isai:And Samuel said to Jesse:Mitte,“Send and bring him.et adduc eum:For we shall not recline to eat,nec enim discumbemus priusquam huc ille veniat.until he arrives here.”
Misit ergo,Therefore,et adduxit eum.he sent and brought him.Erat autem rufus,Now he was ruddy,et pulcher aspectu,and beautiful to behold,decoraque facie:and with a stately face.et ait Dominus:And the Lord said,Surge,“Rise up,unge eum:anoint him!ipse est enim.For it is he.”
Tulit ergo Samuel cornu olei,Therefore, Samuel took the horn of oil,et unxit eum in medio fratrum ejus:and he anointed him in the midst of his brothers.et directus est spiritus Domini a die illa in David, et deinceps. And the Spirit of the Lord was guiding David from that day and thereafter.Surgensque Samuel abiit in Ramatha. And Samuel rose up, and he went away to Ramah.
Spiritus autem Domini recessit a Saul,But the Spirit of the Lord withdrew from Saul,et exagitabat eum spiritus nequam a Domino.and a wicked spirit from the Lord disturbed him.
Dixeruntque servi Saul ad eum:And the servants of Saul said to him:Ecce spiritus Dei malus exagitat te.“Behold, an evil spirit from God disturbs you.
Jubeat dominus noster,May our lord order,et servi tui qui coram te sunt quærent hominem scientem psallere cithara, and your servants, who are before you, will seek a man skillful in playing a stringed instrument,ut quando arripuerit te spiritus Domini malus,so that when the evil spirit from the Lord assails you, psallat manu sua,he may play with his hand,et levius feras.and you may bear it more easily.”
Et ait Saul ad servos suos:And Saul said to his servants,Providete ergo mihi aliquem bene psallentem,“Then provide for me someone who can play well,et adducite eum ad me.and bring him to me.”
Et respondens unus de pueris,And one of the servants, responding, ait:said:Ecce vidi filium Isai Bethlehemitem scientem psallere,“Behold, I have seen the son of Jesse of Bethlehem, a skillful player,et fortissimum robore, and very strong and robust,et virum bellicosum,a man fit for war,et prudentem in verbis, and prudent in words,et virum pulchrum:a handsome man.et Dominus est cum eo.And the Lord is with him.”
Misit ergo Saul nuntios ad Isai,Therefore, Saul sent messengers to Jesse, dicens:saying,Mitte ad me David filium tuum,“Send to me your son David, qui est in pascuis.who is in the pastures.”
Tulit itaque Isai asinum plenum panibus,And so, Jesse took a donkey laden with bread,et lagenam vini, and a bottle of wine,et hædum de capris unum, and a kid from one of the goats,et misit per manum David filii sui Sauli.and he sent them, by the hand of his son David, to Saul.
Et venit David ad Saul,And David went to Saul,et stetit coram eo:and stood before him.at ille dilexit eum nimis,And he loved him exceedingly,et factus est ejus armiger.and he made him his armor bearer.
Misitque Saul ad Isai,And Saul sent to Jesse, dicens:saying:Stet David in conspectu meo:“Let David remain before my sight.invenit enim gratiam in oculis meis. For he has found favor in my eyes.”
Igitur quandocumque spiritus Domini malus arripiebat Saul,And so,David tollebat citharam, whenever the evil spirit from the Lord assailed Saul,et percutiebat manu sua,David took up his stringed instrument,et refocillabatur Saul, and he struck it with his hand,et levius habebat:and Saul was refreshed and uplifted.recedebat enim ab eo spiritus malus. For the evil spirit withdrew from him.
