Venit autem David in Nobe ad Achimelech sacerdotem:Then David went into Nob,et obstupuit Achimelech,to the priest Ahimelech.eo quod venisset David. And Ahimelech was astonished that David had arrived.Et dixit ei:And he said to him,Quare tu solus,“Why are you alone,et nullus est tecum?and no one is with you?”

Et ait David ad Achimelech sacerdotem:And David said to the priest Ahimelech:Rex præcepit mihi sermonem,“The king has instructed to me a word,et dixit:and he said:Nemo sciat rem propter quam missus es a me,‘Let no one know the matter about which you have been sent by me,et cujusmodi præcepta tibi dederim:and what type of instructions I have given to you.nam et pueris condixi in illum et illum locum. For I have also summoned servants to one and another place.’

Nunc ergo si quid habes ad manum,Now therefore, if you have anything at hand, vel quinque panes, even five loaves of bread,da mihi, aut quidquid inveneris.or whatever you may find, give it to me.”

Et respondens sacerdos ad David,And the priest, responding to David, ait illi:said to him:Non habeo laicos panes ad manum,“I have no common bread at hand, sed tantum panem sanctum:but only holy bread.si mundi sunt pueri,Are the young men clean, maxime a mulieribus?especially from women?”

Et respondit David sacerdoti,And David responded to the priest,et dixit ei:and said to him:Equidem,“Indeed,si de mulieribus agitur:as concerns being with women, continuimus nos ab heriwe have abstained since yesterday and the day before,et nudiustertius quando egrediebamur, when we departed,et fuerunt vasa puerorum sancta.and so the vessels of the young men have been holy.Porro via hæc polluta est,And although, sedthis journey has been defiled,et ipsa hodie sanctificabitur in vasis.it will also be sanctified today as concerns the vessels.”

Dedit ergo ei sacerdos sanctificatum panem:Therefore, the priest gave to him sanctified bread.neque enim erat ibi panis,For there was no bread there, nisi tantum panes propositionis, but only the bread of the Presence, qui sublati fuerant a facie Domini, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord,ut ponerentur panes calidi.so that fresh loaves might be set up.

Erat autem ibi vir quidam de servis Saul in die illa,Now a certain man among the servants of Saul was there on that day, intus in tabernaculo Domini:inside the tabernacle of the Lord.et nomen ejus Doëg Idumæus,And his name was Doeg, an Edomite, potentissimus pastorum Saul.the most powerful among the shepherds of Saul.

Dixit autem David ad Achimelech:Then David said to Ahimelech:Si habes hic ad manum hastam aut gladium?“Do you have, here at hand, a spear or a sword?quia gladium meum et arma mea non tuli mecum:For I did not take my own sword, or my own weapons with me.sermo enim regis urgebat. For the word of the king was urgent.”

Et dixit sacerdos:And the priest said: “Behold,Ecce hic gladius Goliath Philisthæi,here is the sword of Goliath, the Philistine, quem percussisti in Valle terebinthi:whom you struck down in the Valley of Terebinth.est involutus pallio post ephod:It is wrapped up in a cloak behind the ephod.si istum vis tollere,If you wish to take this, tolle:take it.neque enim hic est alius absque eo.For there is nothing else here except this.”Et ait David:And David said,Non est huic alter similis:“There is nothing else like this,da mihi eum.so give it to me.”

Surrexit itaque David,And so, David rose up,et fugit in die illa a facie Saul:and he fled on that day from the face of Saul.et venit ad Achis regem Geth. And he went to Achish, the king of Gath.

Dixeruntque servi Achis ad eum cum vidissent David:And the servants of Achish, when they had seen David, said to him:Numquid non iste est David rex terræ?“Is this not David, the king of the land?nonne huic cantabant per choros,Were they not singing about him, while dancing, dicentes: Percussit Saul mille, saying, ‘Saul has struck down a thousand,et David decem millia?and David ten thousand?’”

Posuit autem David sermones istos in corde suo,Then David took these words to his heart,et extimuit valde a facie Achis regis Geth.and he became exceedingly afraid before the face of Achish, the king of Gath.

Et immutavit os suum coram eis,And he altered his mouth before them,et collabebatur inter manus eorum:and he slipped down between their hands.et impingebat in ostia portæ,And he stumbled against the doors of the gate.defluebantque salivæ ejus in barbam. And his spit flowed down his beard.

Et ait Achis ad servos suos:And Achish said to his servants:Vidistis hominem insanum:“You saw that the man is insane.quare adduxistis eum ad me?Why did you bring him to me?

an desunt nobis furiosi,Or do we have need of those who are mad, quod introduxistis istum,so that you would bring in this one,ut fureret me præsente?to behave madly in my presence?hiccine ingredietur domum meam? How did this man get into my house?”
