Abiit ergo David inde,Then David went away from there,et fugit in speluncam Odollam.and he fled to the cave of Adullam.Quod cum audissent fratres ejus,And when his brotherset omnis domus patris ejus, and all of his father’s house had heard of it,descenderunt ad eum illuc.they descended to him there.
Et convenerunt ad eum omnes qui erant in angustia constituti,And all those left in distress, or oppressed by debt to strangers,et oppressi ære alieno, et amaro animo:or bitter in soul, gathered themselves to him.et factus est eorum princeps,And he became their leader, fueruntque cum eo quasi quadringenti viri.and about four hundred men were with him.
Et profectus est David inde in Maspha,And David set out from there to Mizpah,quæ est Moab:which is of Moab.et dixit ad regem Moab:And he said to the king of Moab,Maneat,“I beg you, oro, let my fatherpater meus et mater mea vobiscum, and my mother remain with you, donec sciam quid faciat mihi Deus.until I know what God will do for me.”
Et reliquit eos ante faciem regis Moab:And he left them before the face of the king of Moab.manseruntque apud eum cunctis diebus quibus David fuit in præsidio. And they stayed with him for all the days that David was in the stronghold.
Dixitque Gad propheta ad David:And the prophet Gad said to David:Noli manere in præsidio:“Do not choose to stay in the stronghold.proficiscere,Set out and go into the land of Judah.”et vade in terram Juda. And so,Et profectus est David,David set out,et venit in saltum Haret.and he went into the forest of Hereth.
Et audivit Saul quod apparuisset David,And Saul heard that David, and the men who were with him,et viri qui erant cum eo. Saul autem cum maneret in Gabaa, had been seen. Now while Saul was staying in Gibeah,et esset in nemore quod est in Rama, and while he was in the forest that is in Ramah, hastam manu tenens, holding a spear in his hand, cunctique servi ejus circumstarent eum, with all his servants standing around him,
ait ad servos suos qui assistebant ei:he said to his servants who were assisting him:Audite nunc,“Listen now, filii Jemini:you sons of Benjamin!numquid omnibus vobis dabit filius Isai agros et vineas,Will the son of Jesse give to all of you fields and vineyards,et universos vos faciet tribunos et centuriones?and will he make all of you tribunes or centurions,
quoniam conjurastis omnes adversum me,so that you would all conspire against me,et non est qui mihi renuntiet, and so that there is no one to inform me,maxime cumespecially when even my son has formed a pact with the son of Jesse?et filius meus fœdus inierit cum filio Isai. There is no one among you who grieves for my situation,Non est qui vicem meam doleat ex vobis,or who would report to me.nec qui annuntiet mihi:For my son has raised up my servant against me,eo quod suscitaverit filius meus servum meum adversum me,seeking to betray me,insidiantem mihi usque hodie.even to this day.”
Respondens autem Doëg Idumæus, qui assistebat, et erat primus inter servos Saul: Vidi, inquit, filium Isai in Nobe apud Achimelech filium Achitob sacerdotem. Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was standing near, and who was first among the servants of Saul, responding, said: “I saw the son of Jesse, in Nob, with Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, the priest.
Qui consuluit pro eo Dominum,And he consulted the Lord for him,et cibaria dedit ei:and he gave him food.sed et gladium Goliath Philisthæi dedit illi. Moreover, he gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.”
Misit ergo rex ad accersendum Achimelech sacerdotem filium Achitob,Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech, the priest, the son of Ahitub,et omnem domum patris ejus, and all of his father’s house, sacerdotum qui erant in Nobe, the priests who were in Nob,qui universi venerunt ad regem.and they all came before the king.
Et ait Saul ad Achimelech:And Saul said to Ahimelech,Audi,“Listen,fili Achitob.son of Ahitub.”Qui respondit:He responded,Præsto sum,“Here I am,domine.lord.”
Dixitque ad eum Saul:And Saul said to him:Quare conjurastis adversum me,“Why have you conspired against me,tu et filius Isai, you and the son of Jesse?et dedisti ei panes et gladium,For you gave him bread and a sword,et consuluisti pro eo Deum, and you consulted the Lord for him,ut consurgeret adversum me,so that he might rise up against me,insidiator usque hodie permanens?continuing as a traitor even to this day.”
Respondensque Achimelech regi, ait:And responding to the king, Ahimelech said:Et quis in omnibus servis tuis sicut David,“But who among all your servants is as faithful as David?fidelis, et gener regis,And he is the son-in-law of the king,et pergens ad imperium tuum, and he goes forth at your order,et gloriosus in domo tua?and he is a glory within your house.
num hodie cœpi pro eo consulere Deum?Did I begin to consult the Lord for him today?absit hoc a me:May this be far from me!ne suspicetur rex adversus servum suum rem hujuscemodi,Let not the king suspect this kind of thing against his servant,in universa domo patris mei:nor against anyone in all my father’s house.non enim scivit servus tuus quidquam super hoc negotio,For your servant did not know anything about this matter, vel modicum vel grande.either small or great.”
Dixitque rex:And the king said,Morte morieris Achimelech,“You shall die a death,tuAhimelech,et omnis domus patris tui.you and all your father’s house!”
Et ait rex emissariis qui circumstabant eum:And the king said to the emissaries who were standing around him:Convertimini,“You shall turn,et interficite sacerdotes Domini, and put to death the priests of the Lord.nam manus eorum cum David est:For their hand is with David.scientes quod fugisset,They knew that he had fled,et non indicaverunt mihi.and they did not reveal it to me.”Noluerunt autem servi regis extendere manus suas in sacerdotes Domini. But the servants of the king were not willing to extend their hands against the priests of the Lord.
Et ait rex ad Doëg: Convertere tu, et irrue in sacerdotes. Conversusque Doëg Idumæus, irruit in sacerdotes, et trucidavit in die illa octoginta quinque viros vestitos ephod lineo. And the king said to Doeg, “You shall turn and rush against the priests.” And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and rushed against the priests. And he massacred, on that day, eighty-five men, vested with the linen ephod.
Nobe autem civitatem sacerdotum percussit in ore gladii,Then he struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword;viros et mulieres, et parvulos et lactentes,he struck down men and women, little ones and infants, bovemque, et asinum,as well as ox and donkey and sheep,et ovem in ore gladii.with the edge of the sword.
Evadens autem unus filius Achimelech filii Achitob,But one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, cujus nomen erat Abiathar, whose name was Abiathar, escaping, fugit ad David, fled to David.
et annuntiavit ei quod occidisset Saul sacerdotes Domini. And he reported to him that Saul had slain the priests of the Lord.
Et ait David ad Abiathar:And David said to Abiathar:Sciebam in die illa quod cum ibi esset Doëg Idumæus,“I knew, on that day when Doeg, the Edomite was there, procul dubio annuntiaret Sauli:that without doubt he would report it to Saul.ego sum reus omnium animarum patris tui.I am guilty of all the souls of your father’s house.
Mane mecum:You should remain with me.ne timeas:Do not be afraid.si quis quæsierit animam meam,For he who seeks my life,quæret et animam tuam, seeks your life also, mecumque servaberis.but with me you shall be saved.”
