Mortuus est autem Samuel,Then Samuel died,et congregatus est universus Israël,and all of Israel gathered together,et planxerunt eum,and they mourned him.et sepelierunt eum in domo sua in Ramatha. And they buried him at his house in Ramah.Consurgensque David descendit in desertum Pharan. And David, rising up, descended to the desert of Paran.
Erat autem vir quispiam in solitudine Maon,Now there was a certain man in the wilderness of Maon,et possessio ejus in Carmelo, and his possessions were at Carmel.et homo ille magnus nimis:And this man was exceedingly great.erantque ei oves tria millia,And three thousand sheep,et mille capræ:and one thousand goats were his.et accidit ut tonderetur grex ejus in Carmelo. And it happened that he was shearing his sheep at Carmel.
Nomen autem viri illius erat Nabal. Now the name of this man was Nabal.Et nomen uxoris ejus Abigail:And the name of his wife was Abigail.eratque mulier illa prudentissima,And she was a very prudentet speciosa:and beautiful woman.porro vir ejus durus,But her husband was hard-hearted,et pessimus, and very wicked,et malitiosus:and malicious.erat autem de genere Caleb. And he was of the stock of Caleb.
Cum ergo audisset David in deserto quod tonderet Nabal gregem suum,Therefore, when David, in the desert, had heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep,
misit decem juvenes,he sent ten young men,et dixit eis:and he said to them:Ascendite in Carmelum,“Ascend to Carmel,et venietis ad Nabal, and go to Nabal,et salutabitis eum ex nomine meo pacifice.and greet him in my name peacefully.
Et dicetis:And you shall say:Sit fratribus meis et tibi pax,‘Peace be to my brothers and to you,et domui tuæ pax, et omnibus, and peace to your house,quæcumque habes, sit pax.and peace to whatever you have.
Audivi quod tonderent pastores tui,I have heard that your shepherds, qui erant nobiscum in deserto:who were with us in the desert, were shearing.numquam eis molesti fuimus,We have never troubled them, nec aliquando defuit quidquam eis de grege, nor was anything from the flock missing to them at any time, omni tempore quo fuerunt nobiscum in Carmelo.during the entire time that they have been with us in Carmel.
Interroga pueros tuos,Question your servants,et indicabunt tibi.and they will tell you.Nunc ergo inveniant pueri tui gratiam in oculis tuis:Now therefore,in die enim bona venimus:may your servants find favor in your eyes.quodcumque invenerit manus tua,For we have arrived on a good day.da servis tuis,Whatever your hand will find,et filio tuo David.give it to your servants and to your son David.’”
Cumque venissent pueri David,And when the servants of David had arrived, locuti sunt ad Nabal omnia verba hæc ex nomine David:they spoke to Nabal all these words in the name of David.et siluerunt. And then they were silent.
Respondens autem Nabal pueris David,But Nabal, responding to the servants of David, ait:said:Quis est David?“Who is David?et quis est filius Isai? And who is the son of Jesse?hodie increverunt servi qui fugiunt dominos suos.Today, servants who are fleeing from their lords are increasing.
Tollam ergo panes meos,Therefore, shall I take my bread,et aquas meas, and my water,et carnes pecorum quæ occidi tonsoribus meis, and the meat of the cattle that I have slain for my shearers,et dabo viris quos nescio unde sint?and give it to men, when I do not know where they are from?”
Regressi sunt itaque pueri David per viam suam,And so the servants of David traveled back along their way.et reversi venerunt,And returning,et nuntiaverunt ei omnia verba quæ dixerat.they went and reported to him all the words that he had said.
Tunc ait David pueris suis:Then David said to his servants,Accingatur unusquisque gladio suo.“Let each one gird his sword.”Et accincti sunt singuli gladiis suis,And each one girded his sword.accinctusque est et David ense suo:And David also girded his sword.et secuti sunt David quasi quadringenti viri:And about four hundred men followed David.porro ducenti remanserunt ad sarcinas. But two hundred remained behind with the supplies.
Abigail autem uxori Nabal nuntiavit unus de pueris suis,Then it was reported to Abigail, the wife of Nabal, by one of his servants, dicens:saying:Ecce David misit nuntios de deserto,“Behold, David has sent messengers from the desert,ut benedicerent domino nostro:so that they might speak kindly to our lord.et aversatus est eos.But he turned them away.
Homines isti boni satis fuerant nobis, et non molesti:These men were good enough to us, and were not troublesome.nec quidquam aliquando periit omni tempore quo fuimus conversati cum eis in deserto:Neither did we ever lose anything, during the entire time that we conversed with them in the desert.
pro muro erant nobis tam in nocte quam in die,They were a wall to us, as much in the night as in the day, omnibus diebus quibus pavimus apud eos greges.during all the days that we were with them, pasturing the sheep.
Quam ob rem considera, et recogita quid facias:For this reason, consider and realize what you should do.quoniam completa est malitia adversum virum tuum, et adversum domum tuam,For evil has been decided against your husband and against your house.et ipse est filius Belial,And he is a son of Belial, ita ut nemo possit ei loqui.so that no one is able to speak to him.”
Festinavit igitur Abigail,And so Abigail hurried,et tulit ducentos panes, and she took two hundred loaves,et duos utres vini, and two vessels of wine,et quinque arietes coctos, and five cooked sheep,et quinque sata polentæ,and five measures of cooked grain,et centum ligaturas uvæ passæ,and one hundred clusters of dried grapes,et ducentas massas caricarum, and two hundred masses of dried figs,et posuit super asinos:and she set them upon donkeys.
dixitque pueris suis:And she said to her servants:Præcedite me:“Go before me.ecce ego post tergum sequar vos:Behold, I will follow after your back.”viro autem suo Nabal non indicavit. But she did not reveal it to her husband, Nabal.
Cum ergo ascendisset asinum,And when she had climbed on a donkey,et descenderet ad radices montis, and was descending to the base of the mountain,David et viri ejus descendebant in occursum ejus:David and his men were descending to meet her.quibus et illa occurrit. And she met them.
Et ait David:And David said:Vere frustra servavi omnia quæ hujus erant in deserto,“Truly, in vain have I preserved all that was his in the wilderness,et non periit quidquam de cunctis quæ ad eum pertinebant:so that nothing perished out of all that belonged to him.et reddidit mihi malum pro bono. And he has repaid evil to me for good.
Hæc faciat Deus inimicis David,May God do these things, by the enemies of David,et hæc addat, and may he add these other things,si reliquero de omnibus quæ ad ipsum pertinent usque mane mingentem ad parietem.if I leave behind until morning, out of all that belongs to him, anything that urinates against a wall.”
Cum autem vidisset Abigail David,Then, festinavit, when Abigail had seen David,et descendit de asino, she hurried and descended from the donkey.et procidit coram David super faciem suam,And she fell upon her face before David,et adoravit super terram, and she reverenced on the ground.
et cecidit ad pedes ejus, et dixit:And she fell at his feet,In me sit,and she said:domine mi, hæc iniquitas:“May this iniquity be upon me,loquatur,my lord.obsecro,I beg you, ancilla tua in auribus tuis, let your handmaid speak to your ears,et audi verba famulæ tuæ.and listen to the words of your servant.
Ne ponat, oro,Let not my lord, dominus meus rex cor suum super virum istum iniquum Nabal:the king, I beseech you, set his heart upon this iniquitous man, quoniam secundum nomen suum stultus est,Nabal. For in accord with his name, he is senseless,et stultitia est cum eo:and foolishness is with him.ego autem ancilla tua non vidi pueros tuos,But I, your handmaid, did not see your servants, domine mi, quos misisti.my lord, whom you had sent.
Nunc ergo, domine mi,Now therefore, my lord, vivit Dominus,as your soul lives,et vivit anima tua,and as the Lord lives, qui prohibuit te ne venires in sanguinem, et salvavit manum tuam tibi:who has kept your hand to yourself, and has prevented you from coming to blood:et nunc fiant sicut Nabal inimici tui, now, let your enemies be like Nabal,et qui quærunt domino meo malum.and like all those who are seeking evil for my lord.
Quapropter suscipe benedictionem hanc,Because of this, accept this blessing, quam attulit ancilla tua tibi domino meo, which your handmaid has brought to you, my lord.et da pueris qui sequuntur te dominum meum. And give it to the young men who follow you, my lord.
Aufer iniquitatem famulæ tuæ:Forgive the iniquity of your handmaid.faciens enim faciet Dominus tibi domino meo domum fidelem,For the Lord will surely make for you, my lord, a faithful house, quia prælia Domini, because you, my lord, domine mi, tu præliaris:fight the battles of the Lord.malitia ergo non inveniatur in te omnibus diebus vitæ tuæ.Therefore, let no evil be found in you all the days of your life.
Si enim surrexerit aliquando homo persequens te,For if a man, at any time, will rise up,et quærens animam tuam, pursuing you and seeking your life, erit anima domini mei custodita quasi in fasciculo viventium apud Dominum Deum tuum:the life of my lord will be preserved, as if in the sheave of the living, with the Lord your God.porro inimicorum tuorum anima rotabitur,But the lives of your enemies will be spun around, quasi in impetu et circulo fundæ.as if with the force of a whirling sling.
Cum ergo fecerit Dominus tibi domino meo omnia quæ locutus est bona de te, et constituerit te ducem super Israël,Therefore, when the Lord will have done for you, my lord, all the good that he has spoken about you, and when he will have appointed you as leader over Israel,
non erit tibi hoc in singultum, this will not be for you a regret or a scruple of the heart,et in scrupulum cordis domino meo,my lord, quod effuderis sanguinem innoxium, that you had shed innocent blood, aut ipse te ultus fueris:or had taken revenge for yourself.et cum benefecerit Dominus domino meo,And when the Lord will have done well for my lord, recordaberis ancillæ tuæ.you shall remember your handmaid.”
Et ait David ad Abigail:And David said to Abigail:Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël,“Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, qui misit hodie te in occursum meum, who sent you this day to meet me.et benedictum eloquium tuum,And blessed is your eloquence.
et benedicta tu,And blessed are you,quæ prohibuisti me hodie ne irem ad sanguinem, who prevented me today from going to blood,et ulciscerer me manu mea.and from taking revenge for myself with my own hand.
Alioquin vivit Dominus Deus Israël,But instead, as the Lord God of Israel lives, qui prohibuit me ne malum facerem tibi:he has prevented me from doing evil to you.nisi cito venisses in occursum mihi,But if you had not come quickly to meet me,non remansisset Nabal usque ad lucem matutinam mingens ad parietem.there would not have been left to Nabal by the morning light, anything that urinates against a wall.”
Suscepit ergo David de manu ejus omnia quæ attulerat ei,Then David received from her hand all that she had brought to him.dixitque ei:And he said to her:Vade pacifice in domum tuam:“Go in peace to your own house. Behold, ecce audivi vocem tuam,I have heeded your voice,et honoravi faciem tuam.and I have honored your face.”
Venit autem Abigail ad Nabal:Then Abigail went to Nabal. And behold,et ecce erat ei convivium in domo ejus quasi convivium regis,he was holding a feast for himself in his house, like the feast of a king.et cor Nabal jucundum:And the heart of Nabal was cheerful.erat enim ebrius nimis:For he was greatly inebriated.et non indicavit ei verbum pusillum aut grande usque mane. And she did not reveal a word to him, small or great, until morning.
Diluculo autem cum digessisset vinum Nabal,Then, at first light, when Nabal had digested his wine, indicavit ei uxor sua verba hæc:his wife revealed to him these words,et emortuum est cor ejus intrinsecus, and his heart died within himself,et factus est quasi lapis.and he became like a stone.
Cumque pertransissent decem dies,And after ten days had passed, percussit Dominus Nabal, the Lord struck Nabal,et mortuus est.and he died.
Quod cum audisset David mortuum Nabal,And when David had heard that Nabal was dead, ait:he said:Benedictus Dominus,“Blessed is the Lord, qui judicavit causam opprobrii mei de manu Nabal, who has judged the case of my reproach at the hand of Nabal,et servum suum custodivit a malo, and who has preserved his servant from evil.et malitiam Nabal reddidit Dominus in caput ejus. And the Lord has repaid the malice of Nabal upon his own head.”Misit ergo David,Then David sentet locutus est ad Abigail, and he spoke with Abigail,ut sumeret eam sibi in uxorem.so that he might take her to himself as wife.
Et venerunt pueri David ad Abigail in Carmelum,And David’s servants went to Abigail at Carmel,et locuti sunt ad eam,and they spoke to her, dicentes:saying,David misit nos ad te,“David has sent us to you,ut accipiat te sibi in uxorem.so that he might take you to himself as wife.”
Quæ consurgens,And rising up,adoravit prona in terram, she reverenced prone on the ground,et ait:and she said,Ecce famula tua sit in ancillam,“Behold, let your servant be a handmaid,ut lavet pedes servorum domini mei.to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.”
Et festinavit,And Abigail rose upet surrexit Abigail, and hurried,et ascendit super asinum, and she climbed upon a donkey,et quinque puellæ ierunt cum ea,and five girls went with her, pedissequæ ejus, her attendants.et secuta est nuntios David:And she followed the messengers of David,et facta est illi uxor.and she became his wife.
SedMoreover,et Achinoam accepit David de Jezraël:David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel.et fuit utraque uxor ejus. And both of them were his wives.
Saul autem dedit Michol filiam suam,Then Saul gave his daughter Michal, uxorem David, the wife of David,Phalti filio Lais,to Palti, the son of Laish, qui erat de Gallim.who was from Gallim.
