Ascendit ergo David inde:Then David ascended from there,et habitavit in locis tutissimis Engaddi.and he lived in very secure places in Engedi.

Cumque reversus esset Saul,And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, postquam persecutus est Philisthæos,they reported to him, nuntiaverunt ei,saying, dicentes:“Behold,Ecce David in deserto est Engaddi.David is in the desert of Engedi.”

Assumens ergo Saul tria millia electorum virorum ex omni Israël,Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, perrexit ad investigandum David et viros ejus, traveled in order to search for David and his men, etiam super abruptissimas petras, even upon the most broken rocks,quæ solis ibicibus perviæ sunt.which are passable only to mountain goats.

Et venit ad caulas ovium,And he arrived at the sheepfolds,quæ se offerebant vianti:which presented themselves along the way.eratque ibi spelunca,And a cave was in that place, quam ingressus est Saul ut purgaret ventrem:which Saul entered, porro Davidso that he might ease his bowels.et viri ejus in interiore parte speluncæ latebant. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.

Et dixerunt servi David ad eum:And the servants of David said to him:Ecce dies de qua locutus est Dominus ad te:“Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you,Ego tradam tibi inimicum tuum,‘I will deliver your enemy to you,ut facias ei sicut placuerit in oculis tuis.so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’”Surrexit ergo David,Then David rose up,et præcidit oram chlamydis Saul silenter.and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.

Post hæc percussit cor suum David,After this, his own heart struck David,eo quod abscidisset oram chlamydis Saul.because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.

Dixitque ad viros suos:And he said to his men:Propitius sit mihi Dominus,“May the Lord be gracious to me,ne faciam hanc rem domino meo, lest I do this thing to my lord, christo Domini, the Christ of the Lord,ut mittam manum meam in eum:so that I lay my hand upon him.quia christus Domini est.For he is the Christ of the Lord.”

Et confregit David viros suos sermonibus,And David restrained his men with his words,et non permisit eos ut consurgerent in Saul:and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul.porro Saul exsurgens de spelunca,And so Saul, going out of the cave, pergebat cœpto itinere.continued to undertake his journey.

Surrexit autem et David post eum:Then David also rose up after him.et egressus de spelunca,And departing from the cave, clamavit post tergum Saul,he cried out behind the back of Saul, dicens:saying:Domine mi rex.“My lord, the king!”Et respexit Saul post se:And Saul looked behind him.et inclinans se David pronus in terram adoravit,And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.

dixitque ad Saul:And he said to Saul:Quare audis verba hominum loquentium:“Why do you listen to the words of men who say:David quærit malum adversum te?‘David seeks evil against you?’

Ecce hodie viderunt oculi tui quod tradiderit te Dominus in manu mea in spelunca:Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave.et cogitavi ut occiderem te,And I thought that I might kill you.sed pepercit tibi oculus meus:But my eye has spared you.dixi enim:For I said:Non extendam manum meam in dominum meum,I will not extend my hand against my lord, quia christus Domini est.for he is the Christ of the Lord.

Quin potius pater mi,Moreover, see and know, vide, et cognosce oram chlamydis tuæ in manu mea:O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand.quoniam cum præscinderem summitatem chlamydis tuæ, nolui extendere manum meam in te:For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you.animadverte, et vide, quoniam non est in manu mea malum,Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, neque iniquitas, neque peccavi in te:nor any iniquity or sin against you.tu autem insidiaris animæ meæ ut auferas eam.Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.

Judicet Dominus inter me et te,May the Lord judge between me and you.et ulciscatur me Dominus ex te:And may the Lord vindicate me from you.manus autem mea non sit in te.But my hand will not be against you.

Sicut et in proverbio antiquo dicitur:So too, it is said in the ancient proverb,Ab impiis egredietur impietas:‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’manus ergo mea non sit in te.Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.

Quem persequeris,Whom are you pursuing,rex Israël?O king of Israel?quem persequeris?Whom are you pursuing?canem mortuum persequeris,You are pursuing a dead dog,et pulicem unum.a single flea.

Sit Dominus judex,May the Lord be the judge,et judicet inter me et te:and may he judge between me and you.et videat, et judicet causam meam,And may he see and judge my case,et eruat me de manu tua.and rescue me from your hand.”

Cum autem complesset David loquens sermones hujuscemodi ad Saul,And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, dixit Saul:Saul said,Numquid vox hæc tua est,“Could this be your voice, fili mi David?my son David?”Et levavit Saul vocem suam,And Saul lifted up his voice,et flevit:and he wept.

dixitque ad David:And he said to David:Justior tu es quam ego:“You are more just than I am.tu enim tribuisti mihi bona,For you have distributed good to me,ego autem reddidi tibi mala.but I have repaid evil to you.

Et tu indicasti hodie quæ feceris mihi bona:And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me:quomodo tradiderit me Dominus in manum tuam, how the Lord delivered me into your hand,et non occideris me.but you did not kill me.

Quis enim cum invenerit inimicum suum,For who, when he will have found his enemy, dimittet eum in via bona?will release him along a good path?sed Dominus reddat tibi vicissitudinem hanc pro eo quod hodie operatus es in me.So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.

Et nunc quia scio quod certissime regnaturus sis,And now I know certainly that you shall be king,et habiturus in manu tua regnum Israël:and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.

jura mihi in Domino, ne deleas semen meum post me,Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me,neque auferas nomen meum de domo patris mei.nor take away my name from the house of my father.”

Et juravit David Sauli. And David swore to Saul.Abiit ergo Saul in domum suam:Therefore,et DavidSaul went away to his own house.et viri ejus ascenderunt ad tutiora loca. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.
