Et ait David in corde suo:And David said in his heart:Aliquando incidam una die in manus Saul:“At some time, I will one day fall into the hands of Saul.nonne melius est ut fugiam,Is it not better if I flee,et salver in terra Philisthinorum, and be saved in the land of the Philistines,ut desperet Saul, cessetque me quærere in cunctis finibus Israël?so that Saul may despair and cease to seek me in all the parts of Israel? Therefore, fugiam ergo manus ejus.I will flee away from his hands.”
Et surrexit David,And David rose up and went away,et abiit ipse, et sexcenti viri cum eo,he and the six hundred men who were with him,ad Achis filium Maoch regem Geth.to Achish, the son of Maoch, the king of Gath.
Et habitavit David cum Achis in Geth,And David lived with Achish at Gath, ipse et viri ejus: vir et domus ejus:he and his men: each man with his household,et David, et duæ uxores ejus, and David with his two wives,Achinoam Jezrahelitis,Ahinoam, the Jezreelite,et Abigail uxor Nabal Carmeli.and Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.
Et nuntiatum est Sauli quod fugisset David in Geth,And it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath.et non addidit ultra quærere eum.And so, he did not continue to seek him.
Dixit autem David ad Achis:And David said to Achish:Si inveni gratiam in oculis tuis,“If I have found favor in your eyes, detur mihi locus in una urbium regionis hujus, let a place be given to me in one of the cities of this region,ut habitem ibi:so that I may live there.cur enim manet servus tuus in civitate regis tecum? For why should your servant stay in the city of the king with you?”
Dedit itaque ei Achis in die illa Siceleg:And so, Achish gave Ziklag to him on that day.propter quam causam facta est Siceleg regum Juda usque in diem hanc. And for this reason, Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah, even to this day.
Fuit autem numerus dierum quibus habitavit David in regione Philisthinorum, quatuor mensium. Now the number of days that David lived in the region of the Philistines was four months.
Et ascendit David et viri ejus,And David and his men went up and took plunder from Geshuri,et agebant prædas de Gessuri, and from Girzi,et de Gerzi, and from the Amalekites.et de Amalecitis:For in the land long ago,hi enim pagi habitabantur in terra antiquitus, these were the inhabitants of the area, euntibus Sur usque ad terram Ægypti.going from Shur as far as the land of Egypt.
Et percutiebat David omnem terram,And David struck the entire land.nec relinquebat viventem virum et mulierem:Neither did he leave alive man or woman.tollensque oves, et boves,And he took away the sheep,et asinos, and the oxen,et camelos, and the donkeys,et vestes, and the camels, revertebatur, and the garments.et veniebat ad Achis. And he returned and went to Achish.
Dicebat autem ei Achis:Then Achish said to him,In quem irruisti hodie?“Whom did you go out against today?”Respondebat David:And David responded,Contra meridiem Judæ,“Against the south of Judah,et contra meridiem Jerameel, and against the south of Jerahmeel,et contra meridiem Ceni.and against the south of Keni.”
Virum et mulierem non vivificabat David,Neither man nor woman was left alive by David.nec adducebat in Geth,Neither did he lead back any of them to Gath, dicens:saying,Ne forte loquantur adversum nos:“Lest perhaps they may speak against us.”Hæc fecit David:David did these things.et hoc erat decretum illi omnibus diebus quibus habitavit in regione Philisthinorum. And this was his decision during all the days that he lived in the region of the Philistines.
Credidit ergo Achis David,Therefore, Achish trusted David, dicens:saying:Multa mala operatus est contra populum suum Israël:“He has worked much harm against his people Israel. And so,erit igitur mihi servus sempiternus.he will be a servant to me forever.”
