Factum est autem in diebus illis,Now it happened that, in those days, congregaverunt Philisthiim agmina sua,the Philistines gathered together their troops,ut præpararentur ad bellum contra Israël:so that they might be prepared for war against Israel.dixitque Achis ad David:And Achish said to David,Sciens nunc scito quoniam mecum egredieris in castris,“I know now, certainly, that you will go out with me to war,tu et viri tui.you and your men.”
Dixitque David ad Achis:And David said to Achish,Nunc scies quæ facturus est servus tuus.“You know now what your servant will do.”Et ait Achis ad David:And Achish said to David,Et ego custodem capitis mei ponam te cunctis diebus.“And so, I will appoint you to guard my head for all days.”
Samuel autem mortuus est,Now Samuel was dead, planxitque eum omnis Israël,and all of Israel mourned for him,et sepelierunt eum in Ramatha urbe sua.and they buried him in Ramah,Et Saul abstulit magoshis city.et hariolos de terra. And Saul took away the magi and soothsayers from the land.
Congregatique sunt Philisthiim,And the Philistines gathered together,et venerunt, and they arrivedet castrametati sunt in Sunam:and made camp at Shunem.congregavit autem et Saul universum Israël,Then Saul also gathered all of Israel,et venit in Gelboë.and he arrived at Gilboa.
Et vidit Saul castra Philisthiim,And Saul saw the camp of the Philistines,et timuit, and he was afraid,et expavit cor ejus nimis.and his heart was exceedingly terrified.
Consuluitque Dominum,And he consulted the Lord.et non respondit eiBut he did not respond to him, neque per somnia, neither by dreams, neque per sacerdotes, nor by priests, neque per prophetas.nor by prophets.
Dixitque Saul servis suis:And Saul said to his servants,Quærite mihi mulierem habentem pythonem,“Seek for me a woman having a divining spirit,et vadam ad eam,and I will go to her,et sciscitabor per illam.and consult through her.”Et dixerunt servi ejus ad eum:And his servants said to him,Est mulier pythonem habens in Endor.“There is a woman having a divining spirit at Endor.”
Mutavit ergo habitum suum,Therefore, he changed his usual appearance, vestitusque est aliis vestimentis, and he put on other clothes. And he went,et abiit ipse, and two men with him,et duo viri cum eo: veneruntque ad mulierem nocte, and they came to the woman by night. And he said to her,et ait illi:“Divine for me,Divina mihi in pythone,by your divining spirit,et suscita mihi quem dixero tibi.and raise up for me whomever I will tell you.”
Et ait mulier ad eum:And the woman said to him:Ecce,“Behold,tu nosti quanta fecerit Saul, you know how much Saul has done,et quomodo eraserit magos et hariolos de terra:and how he has wiped away the magi and soothsayers from the land.quare ergo insidiaris animæ meæ,Why then do you set a trap for my life,ut occidar?so that it will be put to death?”
Et juravit ei Saul in Domino,And Saul swore to her by the Lord, dicens:saying,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives, quia non eveniet tibi quidquam mali propter hanc rem.nothing evil will befall you because of this matter.”
Dixitque ei mulier:And the woman said to him,Quem suscitabo tibi?“Whom shall I raise up for you?”Qui ait:And he said,Samuelem mihi suscita.“Raise up for me Samuel.”
Cum autem vidisset mulier Samuelem,And when the woman had seen Samuel, exclamavit voce magna, she cried out with a loud voice,et dixit ad Saul:and she said to Saul:Quare imposuisti mihi?“Why have you afflicted me?tu es enim Saul. For you are Saul!”
Dixitque ei rex:And the king said to her:Noli timere:“Do not be afraid.quid vidisti? What have you seen?”Et ait mulier ad Saul:And the woman said to Saul,Deos vidi ascendentes de terra.“I saw gods ascending from the earth.”
Dixitque ei:And he said to her,Qualis est forma ejus?“What appearance does he have?”Quæ ait:And she said,Vir senex ascendit,“An old man ascends,et ipse amictus est pallio.and he is clothed in a cloak.”Et intellexit Saul quod Samuel esset,And Saul understood that it was Samuel.et inclinavit se super faciem suam in terra,And he bowed himself upon his face on the ground,et adoravit.and he reverenced.
Dixit autem Samuel ad Saul:Then Samuel said to Saul,Quare inquietasti me ut suscitarer?“Why have you disquieted me, so that I would be raised up?”Et ait Saul:And Saul said:Coarctor nimis: siquidem Philisthiim pugnant adversum me,“I am greatly distressed. For the Philistines fight against me,et Deus recessit a me,and God has withdrawn from me,et exaudire me noluit neque in manu prophetarum, and he is not willing to heed me, neither by the hand of prophets, neque per somnia:nor by dreams. Therefore, vocavi ergo te,I have summoned you,ut ostenderes mihi quid faciam.so that you would reveal to me what I should do.”
Et ait Samuel:And Samuel said,Quid interrogas me,“Why do you question me,cum Dominus recesserit a te,though the Lord has withdrawn from you,et transierit ad æmulum tuum?and has crossed over to your rival?
Faciet enim tibi Dominus sicut locutus est in manu mea,For the Lord will do to you just as he spoke by my hand.et scindet regnum tuum de manu tuaAnd he will tear your kingdom from your hand.et dabit illud proximo tuo David:And he will give it to your neighbor David.
quia non obedisti voci Domini,For you did not obey the voice of the Lord, neque fecisti iram furoris ejus in Amalec:and you did not carry out the wrath of his fury upon Amalek.idcirco quod pateris,For this reason, fecit tibi Dominus hodie.the Lord has done to you what you are enduring this day.
Et dabit Dominus etiam Israël tecum in manus Philisthiim:And the Lord also will give Israel into the hands of the Philistines, along with you.cras autem tu et filii tui mecum eritis:Then tomorrow you and your sons will be with me.sed et castra Israël tradet Dominus in manus Philisthiim. But the Lord will also deliver the camp of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
Statimque Saul cecidit porrectus in terram:And immediately, Saul fell stretched out on the ground.extimuerat enim verba Samuelis,For he was terrified by the words of Samuel.et robur non erat in eo,And there was no strength in him.quia non comederat panem tota die illa. For he had not eaten bread all that day.
Ingressa est itaque mulier illa ad Saul (conturbatus enim erat valde),And so, the woman entered to Saul, (for he was very troubled) and she said to him:dixitque ad eum: Ecce obedivit ancilla tua voci tuæ,“Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice,et posui animam meam in manu mea:and I have placed my life in my hand.et audivi sermones tuos, quos locutus es ad me.And I have heeded the words which you spoke to me.
Nunc igitur audi et tu vocem ancillæ tuæ,And so now, I ask you to heed the voice of your handmaid,et ponam coram te buccellam panis, and let me place before you a morsel of bread, so that,ut comedens convalescas,by eating, you may recover strength,et possis iter agere.and you may be able to undertake the journey.”
Qui renuit,But he refused,et ait:and he said,Non comedam.“I will not eat.”Coëgerunt autem eum servi sui et mulier,But his servants and the woman urged him,et tandem audita voce eorum surrexit de terra, and after some time, heeding their voice, he rose up from the ground,et sedit super lectum.and he sat upon the bed.
Mulier autem illa habebat vitulum pascualem in domo,Now the woman had a fatted calf in the house,et festinavit, and she hurriedet occidit eum:and killed it.tollensque farinam,And taking meal, miscuit eam,she kneaded it,et coxit azyma, and she baked unleavened bread.
et posuit ante Saul et ante servos ejus. And she set it before Saul and before his servants.Qui cum comedissent,And when they had eaten, surrexerunt, they rose up,et ambulaverunt per totam noctem illam.and they walked all through that night.
