Et factum est in diebus illis,And it happened that, in those days, convenerunt Philisthiim in pugnam:the Philistines assembled to fight.et egressus est Israël obviam Philisthiim in prælium,And Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle,et castrametatus est juxta lapidem Adjutorii.and he made camp beside the Stone of Assistance.Porro Philisthiim venerunt in Aphec,But the Philistines went to Aphek,

et instruxerunt aciem contra Israël.and they positioned their troops against Israel.Inito autem certamine,Then, when the conflict began, terga vertit Israël Philisthæis:Israel turned his back to the Philistines.et cæsa sunt in illo certamine passim per agros,And they were cut down in that conflict, in various places in the fields, quasi quatuor millia virorum.about four thousand men.

Et reversus est populus ad castra:And the people returned to the camp.dixeruntque majores natu de Israël:And those greater by birth of Israel said:Quare percussit nos Dominus hodie coram Philisthiim?“Why has the Lord struck us today before the Philistines?afferamus ad nos de Silo arcam fœderis Domini,Let us bring to ourselves the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh.et veniat in medium nostri,And let it enter into our midst,ut salvet nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum.so that it may save us from the hand of our enemies.”

Misit ergo populus in Silo,Therefore, the people sent to Shiloh,et tulerunt inde arcam fœderis Domini exercituum sedentis super cherubim:and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, sitting upon the cherubim.erantque duo filii Heli cum arca fœderis Dei,And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas,Ophni et Phinees.were with the ark of the covenant of God.

Cumque venisset arca fœderis Domini in castra,And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord had arrived in the camp, vociferatus est omnis Israël clamore grandi, all of Israel shouted with a great clamor,et personuit terra.and the land resounded.

Et audierunt Philisthiim vocem clamoris,And the Philistines heard the voice of the clamor, dixeruntque:and they said,Quænam est hæc vox clamoris magni in castris Hebræorum?“What is this voice of a great clamor in the camp of the Hebrews?”Et cognoverunt quod arca Domini venisset in castra. And they realized that the ark of the Lord had arrived in the camp.

Timueruntque Philisthiim,And the Philistines were afraid, dicentes:saying,Venit Deus in castra.“God has entered into the camp.”Et ingemuerunt,And they groaned, dicentes:saying:

Væ nobis:“Woe to us!non enim fuit tanta exultatio heriFor there was no such great exultation yesterday,et nudiustertius:or the day before.væ nobis.Woe to us!Quis nos salvabit de manu deorum sublimium istorum?Who will save us from the hand of these sublime gods?hi sunt dii,These are the gods who struck Egypt with all the plagues, qui percusserunt Ægyptum omni plaga in deserto.in the desert.”

Confortamini,“Be strengthened,et estote viri, and be manly,Philisthiim,O Philistines!ne serviatis Hebræis,Otherwise, sicut et illi servierunt vobis:you may serve the Hebrews, confortamini,as they also have served you.et bellate.Be strengthened and wage war!”

Pugnaverunt ergo Philisthiim,Therefore, the Philistines fought,et cæsus est Israël,and Israel was cut down,et fugit unusquisque in tabernaculum suum: et facta est plaga magna nimis, and each one fled to his own tent. And an exceedingly great slaughter occurred.et ceciderunt de Israël triginta millia peditum. And thirty thousand foot soldiers from Israel fell.

Et arca Dei capta est:And the ark of God was captured.duo quoque filii Heli mortui sunt,Also, the two sons of Eli,Ophni et Phinees.Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Currens autem vir de Benjamin ex acie,Now a man of Benjamin, rushing from the troops, venit in Silo in die illa, arrived at Shiloh on the same day, scissa veste, with his clothing torn,et conspersus pulvere caput.and with his head sprinkled with dust.

Cumque ille venisset,And when he had arrived,Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans.Eli was sitting on a seat opposite the way, gazing out.Erat enim cor ejus pavens pro arca Dei.For his heart was fearful on behalf of the ark of God. Then,Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est, nuntiavit urbi:after this man entered the city, he announced it to the city.et ululavit omnis civitas. And the entire city wailed.

Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris,And Eli heard the sound of the outcry, dixitque:and he said,Quis est hic sonitus tumultus hujus?“What is this sound,At ille festinavit, this tumult?”et venit,And the man hurried,et nuntiavit Heli.and he went and announced it to Eli.

Heli autem erat nonaginta et octo annorum,Now Eli was ninety-eight years old,et oculi ejus caligaverant, and his eyes had dimmed,et videre non poterat.so that he was not able to see.

Et dixit ad Heli:And he said to Eli:Ego sum qui veni de prælio,“I am the one who came from the battle.et ego qui de acie fugi hodie. And it is I who fled from the troops today.”Cui ille ait:And he said to him,Quid actum est,“What has happened, fili mi?my son?”

Respondens autem ille qui nuntiabat: Fugit,And responding, the man reported and said:inquit, Israël coram Philisthiim,“Israel has fled before the Philistines.et ruina magna facta est in populo:And a great ruin has happened to the people.insuper et duo filii tui mortui sunt,Moreover, your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas,Ophni et Phinees, et arca Dei capta est.also have died. And the ark of God has been captured.”

Cumque ille nominasset arcam Dei,And when he had named the ark of God,cecidit de sella retrorsum juxta ostium,he fell from the seat backwards, toward the door,et fractis cervicibus mortuus est.and, having broken his neck, he died.Senex enim erat vir et grandævus:For he was an old man of great age.et ipse judicavit Israël quadraginta annis. And he judged Israel for forty years.

Nurus autem ejus,Now his daughter-in-law,uxor Phinees, the wife of Phinehas,prægnans erat, was pregnant, vicinaque partui:and her delivery was near.et audito nuntio quod capta esset arca Dei,And upon hearing the news that the ark of God had been captured,et mortuus esset socer suus et vir suus, and that her father-in-law and her husband had died, incurvavit se et peperit:she bent down and went into labor.irruerant enim in eam dolores subiti. For her pains rushed upon her suddenly.

In ipso autem momento mortis ejus,Then, when she was near death, dixerunt ei quæ stabant circa eam: Ne timeas, those who were standing around her said to her, “You should not be afraid, quia filium peperisti.for you have given birth to a son.”Quæ non respondit eis,But she did not respond to them, neque animadvertit.and she did not notice them.

Et vocabit puerum Ichabod,And she called the boy Ichabod, dicens:saying,Translata est gloria de Israël,“The glory of Israel has been taken away,”quia capta est arca Dei,because the ark of God was captured,et pro socero suo et pro viro suo;and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

et ait:And she said,Translata est gloria ab Israël,“The glory has been taken away from Israel,”eo quod capta esset arca Dei.because the ark of God had been captured.
