Philisthiim autem tulerunt arcam Dei,Then the Philistines took the ark of God,et asportaverunt eam a lapide Adjutorii in Azotum.and they transported it from the Stone of Assistance into Ashdod.
Tuleruntque Philisthiim arcam Dei,And the Philistines took the ark of God,et intulerunt eam in templum Dagon, and carried it into the temple of Dagon.et statuerunt eam juxta Dagon. And they stationed it beside Dagon.
Cumque surrexissent diluculo Azotii altera die,And when the Ashdodites had risen up at first light on the next day, ecce Dagon jacebat pronus in terra ante arcam Domini:behold, Dagon was lying prone on the ground before the ark of the Lord.et tulerunt Dagon,And they took Dagon,et restituerunt eum in locum suum.and they set him again in his place.
Rursumque mane die altera consurgentes,And again, on the next day, rising up in the morning, invenerunt Dagon jacentem super faciem suam in terra coram arca Domini:they found Dagon lying on his face upon the ground, before the ark of the Lord.caput autem Dagon,But the head of Dagon,et duæ palmæ manuum ejus abscissæ erant super limen:and both palms of his hands had been cut off upon the threshold.
porro Dagon solus truncus remanserat in loco suo. Moreover, only the trunk of Dagon remained in its place.Propter hanc causam non calcant sacerdotes Dagon,For this reason, the priests of Dagon,et omnes qui ingrediuntur templum ejus, super limen Dagon in Azoto, and all who enter his temple, do not tread upon the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, usque in hodiernum diem.even to this day.
Aggravata est autem manus Domini super Azotios,Now the hand of the Lord weighed heavily upon the Ashdodites,et demolitus est eos:and he destroyed them.et percussit in secretiori parte natium Azotum, et fines ejus. And he struck Ashdod and its borders at the inner part of the buttocks.Et ebullierunt villæ et agri in medio regionis illius,And in the villages and fields, in the midst of that region,et nati sunt mures et facta est confusio mortis magnæ in civitate.mice rose up and burst forth. And this caused a great tumult unto death in the city.
Videntes autem viri Azotii hujuscemodi plagam,Then the men of Ashdod, seeing this kind of plague, dixerunt:said:Non maneat arca Dei Israël apud nos: quoniam dura est manus ejus super nos,“The ark of the God of Israel shall not remain with us. For his hand is harsh,et super Dagon deum nostrum.over us and over Dagon, our god.”
Et mittentes congregaverunt omnes satrapas Philisthinorum ad se,And sending, they gathered together all the princes of the Philistines to them,et dixerunt:and they said,Quid faciemus de arca Dei Israël?“What shall we do about the ark of the God of Israel?”Responderuntque Gethæi:And the Gathites responded,Circumducatur arca Dei Israël.“Let the ark of the God of Israel be led around.”Et circumduxerunt arcam Dei Israël.And they led the ark of the God of Israel around.
Illis autem circumducentibus eam,And as they were carrying it around, fiebat manus Domini per singulas civitates interfectionis magnæ nimis:the hand of the Lord fell upon every single city with an exceedingly great slaughter.et percutiebat viros uniuscujusque urbis,And he struck down the men of each and every city,a parvo usque ad majorem, from the small even to the great.et computrescebant prominentes extales eorum. And cysts were festering at their buttocks.Inieruntque Gethæi consilium,And the Gathites took counsel,et fecerunt sibi sedes pelliceas.and they made for themselves seat covers from pelts.
Miserunt ergo arcam Dei in Accaron. Therefore, they sent the ark of God into Ekron.Cumque venisset arca Dei in Accaron,And when the ark of God had arrived at Ekron, exclamaverunt Accaronitæ,the Ekronites cried out, saying, dicentes: Adduxerunt ad nos arcam Dei Israël ut interficiat nos et populum nostrum.“They have brought the ark of the God of Israel to us, so that it may kill us and our people!”
Miserunt itaqueAnd so they sent and gathered together all the princes of the Philistines,et congregaverunt omnes satrapas Philisthinorum:and they said:qui dixerunt:“Release the ark of the God of Israel,Dimittite arcam Dei Israël,and return it to its own place.et revertatur in locum suum,And let it not kill us,et non interficiat nos cum populo nostro.with our people.”
Fiebat enim pavor mortis in singulis urbibus,For the fear of death fell upon every single city,et gravissima valde manus Dei.and the hand of God was very heavy.Viri quoque qui mortui non fuerant,Also, percutiebantur in secretiori parte natium:the men who did not die were being afflicted in the inner part of the buttocks.et ascendebat ululatus uniuscujusque civitatis in cælum. And the wailing of each city was ascending to heaven.
