Venerunt ergo viri Cariathiarim,Then the men of Kiriath-jearim arrived,et reduxerunt arcam Domini, and they led away the ark of the Lord.et intulerunt eam in domum Abinadab in Gabaa:And they brought it into the house of Abinadab,Eleazarum autem filium ejus sanctificaverunt,in Gibeah. Then they sanctified Eleazar, his son,ut custodiret arcam Domini.so that he might care for the ark of the Lord.

Et factum est,And it happened that,ex qua die mansit arca Domini in Cariathiarim, from that day, the ark of the Lord remained in Kiriath-jearim.multiplicati sunt dies (erat quippe jam annus vigesimus), et requievit omnis domus Israël post Dominum. And the days were multiplied (for it was now the twentieth year) and all the house of Israel rested, following the Lord.

Ait autem Samuel ad universam domum Israël,Then Samuel spoke to the entire house of Israel, dicens:saying:Si in toto corde vestro revertimini ad Dominum,“If you would return to the Lord with your whole heart, auferte deos alienos de medio vestri, take away strange gods from among you,Baalim et Astaroth:the Baals and Ashtaroth,et præparate corda vestra Domino, and prepare your hearts for the Lord,et servite ei soli, and serve him alone.et eruet vos de manu Philisthiim. And he will rescue you from the hand of the Philistines.”

Abstulerunt ergo filii Israël BaalimTherefore,et Astaroth, the sons of Israel took away the Baals and Ashtaroth,et servierunt Domino soli.and they served the Lord alone.

Dixit autem Samuel:And Samuel said,Congregate universum Israël in Masphath,“Gather all of Israel at Mizpah,ut orem pro vobis Dominum.so that I may pray for you to the Lord.”

Et convenerunt in Masphath:And they convened at Mizpah.hauseruntque aquam,And they drew water,et effuderunt in conspectu Domini:and they poured it out in the sight of the Lord.et jejunaverunt in die illaAnd on that day they fasted, atque dixerunt ibi:and in that place they said,Peccavimus Domino.“We have sinned against the Lord.”Judicavitque Samuel filios Israël in Masphath. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah.

Et audierunt Philisthiim quod congregati essent filii Israël in Masphath,And the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah.et ascenderunt satrapæ Philisthinorum ad Israël.And the princes of the Philistines ascended against Israel.Quod cum audissent filii Israël,And when the sons of Israel had heard this, timuerunt a facie Philisthinorum.they were afraid before the face of the Philistines.

Dixeruntque ad Samuelem:And they said to Samuel,Ne cesses pro nobis clamare ad Dominum Deum nostrum,“May you not cease to cry out to the Lord our God on our behalf,ut salvet nos de manu Philisthinorum.so that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

Tulit autem Samuel agnum lactentem unum,Then Samuel took one suckling lamb,et obtulit illum holocaustum integrum Domino:and he offered it whole, as a holocaust to the Lord.et clamavit Samuel ad Dominum pro Israël,And Samuel cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel,et exaudivit eum Dominus.and the Lord heeded him.

Factum est autem,Then it happened that, cum Samuel offerret holocaustum, while Samuel was offering the holocaust,Philisthiim iniere prælium contra Israël:the Philistines began the battle against Israel.intonuit autem Dominus fragore magno in die illa super Philisthiim,But the Lord thundered with a great crash, on that day, over the Philistines,et exterruit eos,and he terrified them,et cæsi sunt a facie Israël.and they were cut down before the face of Israel.

Egressique viri Israël de Masphath,And the men of Israel, departing from Mizpah, persecuti sunt Philisthæos,pursued the Philistines,et percusserunt eos usque ad locum qui erat subter Bethchar.and they struck them down as far as the place which was below Bethcar.

Tulit autem Samuel lapidem unum,Then Samuel took a single stone,et posuit eum inter Masphath et inter Sen:and he placed it between Mizpah and Shen.et vocavit nomen loci illius,And he called the name of this place:Lapis adjutorii. The Stone of Assistance.Dixitque:And he said,Hucusque auxiliatus est nobis Dominus.“For in this place the Lord gave assistance to us.”

Et humiliati sunt Philisthiim,And the Philistines were humbled, nec apposuerunt ultra ut venirent in terminos Israël.and they no longer drew near, so that they might enter into the borders of Israel.Facta est itaque manus Domini super Philisthæos cunctis diebus Samuelis. And so, the hand of the Lord was over the Philistines during all the days of Samuel.

Et redditæ sunt urbes quas tulerant Philisthiim ab Israël,And the cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel,Israëli,from Ekron as far as Gath,ab Accaron usque Geth, with their borders.et terminos suos:And he freed Israel from the hand of the Philistines.liberavitque Israël de manu Philisthinorum,And there was peace between Israeleratque pax inter Israël et Amorrhæum.and the Amorites.

Judicabat quoque Samuel Israëlem cunctis diebus vitæ suæ:And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

et ibat per singulos annos circuiens Bethel et Galgala et Masphath,And he went each year, traveling around to Bethel, and to Gilgal,et judicabat Israëlem in supradictis locis.and to Mizpah, and he judged Israel in the above-stated places.

Revertebaturque in Ramatha:And he returned to Ramah.ibi enim erat domus ejus,For his house was there,et ibi judicabat Israëlem:and he judged Israel there.ædificavit etiam ibi altare Domino. And then he built an altar to the Lord there.
