Factum est autem cum senuisset Samuel,And it happened that, when Samuel had become old, posuit filios suos judices Israël.he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

Fuitque nomen filii ejus primogeniti Joël:Now the name of his firstborn son was Joel,et nomen secundi Abia, and the name of the second was Abijah:judicum in Bersabee.judges at Beersheba.

Et non ambulaverunt filii illius in viis ejus:But his sons did not walk in his ways. Instead, sed declinaverunt post avaritiam, they turned aside, pursuing avarice.acceperuntque munera,And they accepted bribes,et perverterunt judicium.and they perverted judgment.

Congregati ergo universi majores natu Israël,Therefore, all those greater by birth of Israel, venerunt ad Samuelem in Ramatha.having gathered together, went to Samuel at Ramah.

Dixeruntque ei:And they said to him:Ecce tu senuisti,“Behold,et filii tui non ambulant in viis tuis:you are elderly, constitue nobis regem, and your sons do not walk in your ways.ut judicet nos,Appoint for us a king, sicutso that he may judge us,et universæ habent nationes.just as all the nations have.”

Displicuit sermo in oculis Samuelis,And the word was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel,eo quod dixissent:for they had said,Da nobis regem, ut judicet nos.“Give us a king to judge us.”Et oravit Samuel ad Dominum. And Samuel prayed to the Lord.

Dixit autem Dominus ad Samuelem:Then the Lord said to Samuel:Audi vocem populi in omnibus quæ loquuntur tibi:“Listen to the voice of the people in all that they are saying to you.non enim te abjecerunt,For they have not rejected you,sed me,but me,ne regnem super eos.lest I reign over them.

Juxta omnia opera sua quæ fecerunt,In accord with all their works,a die qua eduxi eos de Ægypto usque ad diem hanc:which they have done from the day when I led them away from Egypt, even to this day:sicut dereliquerunt me,just as they have forsaken me,et servierunt diis alienis, and served foreign gods, sic faciunt etiam tibi.so now they also do to you.

Nunc ergo vocem eorum audi:Now therefore, verumtamen contestare eos, hear their voice.et prædic eis jus regis,Yet truly, qui regnaturus est super eos.testify to them and foretell to them the rights of the king who will reign over them.”

Dixit itaque Samuel omnia verba Domini ad populum,And so, Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people, qui petierat a se regem.who had petitioned a king from him.

Et ait:And he said:Hoc erit jus regis,“This will be the right of the king who will have authority over you:qui imperaturus est vobis:He will take your sons, filios vestros tollet, and place them in his chariots.et ponet in curribus suis:And he will make them his horsemenfacietque sibi equites et præcursores quadrigarum suarum, and his runners before his four-horse chariots.

et constituet sibi tribunos, et centuriones,And he will appoint them to be his tribunes and centurions,et aratores agrorum suorum, and the plowmen of his fields,et messores segetum, and the harvesters of the grain,et fabros armorum et curruum suorum.and the makers of his weapons and chariots.

Filias quoque vestras faciet sibi unguentarias,Likewise,et focarias, your daughters he will take for himself as makers of ointments,et panificas.and as cooks and bakers.

Agros quoque vestros,Also, he will take your fields,et vineas, and your vineyards,et oliveta optima tollet, et dabit servis suis.and your best olive groves, and he will give them to his servants.

Sed et segetes vestras et vinearum reditus addecimabit,Moreover, he will take one tenth of your grain and of the results of your vineyards,ut det eunuchis et famulis suis.so that he may give these to his eunuchs and servants.

Servos etiam vestros,Then, too, he will take your servants,et ancillas, and handmaids,et juvenes optimos, and your best young men,et asinos, and your donkeys, auferet, et ponet in opere suo.and he will set them to his work.

Greges quoque vestros addecimabit,Also, he will take a tenth of your flocks.vosque eritis ei servi. And you will be his servants.

Et clamabitis in die illa a facie regis vestri,And you will cry out, in that day, from the face of the king, quem elegistis vobis:whom you have chosen for yourselves.et non exaudiet vos Dominus in die illa,And the Lord will not heed you, in that day.quia petistis vobis regem. For you requested a king for yourselves.”

Noluit autem populus audire vocem Samuelis,But the people were not willing to listen to the voice of Samuel.sed dixerunt:Instead, they said:Nequaquam:“By no means!rex enim erit super nos,For there shall be a king over us,

et erimus nos quoque sicut omnes gentes:and we shall be just like all the Gentiles.et judicabit nos rex noster,And our king will judge us,et egredietur ante nos,and he will go out before us,et pugnabit bella nostra pro nobis.and he will fight our wars for us.”

Et audivit Samuel omnia verba populi,And Samuel heard all the words of the people,et locutus est ea in auribus Domini.and he spoke them to the ears of the Lord.

Dixit autem Dominus ad Samuelem:Then the Lord said to Samuel,Audi vocem eorum,“Listen to their voice,et constitue super eos regem.and appoint a king over them.”Et ait Samuel ad viros Israël:And Samuel said to the men of Israel,Vadat unusquisque in civitatem suam.“Let each one go to his own city.”
