Igitur post hæc fecit sibi Absalom currus,Then, after these things, Absalom obtained for himself chariots,et equites, and horsemen,et quinquaginta viros qui præcederent eum.and fifty men who went before him.
Et mane consurgens Absalom, stabat juxta introitum portæ,And rising up in the morning, Absalom was standing beside the entrance of the gate.et omnem virum qui habebat negotium ut veniret ad regis judicium,And when there was any man who had a dispute that might go before the king’s judgment, vocabat Absalom ad se,Absalom would call him to him,et dicebat:and would say,De qua civitate es tu?“Which city are you from?”Qui respondens aiebat:And responding, he would say,Ex una tribu Israël ego sum servus tuus.“I am your servant, from a certain tribe of Israel.”
Respondebatque ei Absalom:And Absalom would answer him:Videntur mihi sermones tui boni et justi,“Your words seem good and just to me.sed non est qui te audiat constitutus a rege. But there is no one appointed by the king to hear you.”Dicebatque Absalom:And Absalom would say:
Quis me constituat judicem super terram,“Who may appoint me judge over the land,ut ad me veniant omnes qui habent negotium,so that all those who have a dispute might come to me,et juste judicem?and I might judge justly.”
Sed et cum accederet ad eum homo ut salutaret illum,Then too, when a man would draw near to him, so that he might greet him, extendebat manum suam,he would extend his hand,et apprehendens osculabatur eum.and taking hold of him, he would kiss him.
Faciebatque hoc omni Israël venienti ad judicium ut audiretur a rege,And he was doing this to all those of Israel arriving for judgment to be heard by the king.et sollicitabat corda virorum Israël.And he solicited the hearts of the men of Israel.
Post quadraginta autem annos,Then, after forty years, dixit Absalom ad regem David:Absalom said to king David:Vadam, et reddam vota mea quæ vovi Domino in Hebron.“I should go and pay my vows, which I have vowed to the Lord at Hebron.
Vovens enim vovit servus tuus cum esset in Gessur Syriæ,For your servant made a vow, when he was in Geshur of Syria, dicens:saying:Si reduxerit me Dominus in Jerusalem,If the Lord will lead me back to Jerusalem, sacrificabo Domino.I will sacrifice to the Lord.”
Dixitque ei rex David:And king David said to him,Vade in pace.“Go in peace.”Et surrexit,And he rose upet abiit in Hebron.and went away to Hebron.
Misit autem Absalom exploratores in universas tribus Israël,Then Absalom sent scouts into all the tribes of Israel, dicens:saying:Statim ut audieritis clangorem buccinæ,“As soon as you hear the blare of the trumpet, dicite:say:Regnavit Absalom in Hebron.‘Absalom reigns in Hebron.’”
Porro cum Absalom ierunt ducenti viri de Jerusalem vocati,Now having been called, euntes simplici corde, two hundred men from Jerusalem went forth with Absalom,et causam penitus ignorantes.going in simplicity of heart and being entirely ignorant of the plan.
Accersivit quoque Absalom Achitophel Gilonitem consiliarium David,Absalom also summoned Ahithophel the Gilonite, a counselor of David,de civitate sua Gilo.from his city, Giloh.Cumque immolaret victimas,And when he was immolating victims, facta est conjuratio valida,a very strong oath was sworn, populusque concurrens augebatur cum Absalom.and the people, hurrying together, joined with Absalom.
Venit igitur nuntius ad David,Then a messenger went to David, dicens:saying,Toto corde universus Israël sequitur Absalom.“With their whole heart, all of Israel is following Absalom.”
Et ait David servis suis qui erant cum eo in Jerusalem:And David said to his servants, who were with him in Jerusalem:Surgite,“Rise up,fugiamus:let us flee!neque enim erit nobis effugium a facie Absalom: festinate egredi,For otherwise there will be no escape for us from the face of Absalom. Hurry to depart,ne forte veniens occupet nos, lest perhaps, upon arriving,et impellat super nos ruinam,he may seize us, and force ruin upon us,et percutiat civitatem in ore gladii.and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
Dixeruntque servi regis ad eum:And the servants of the king said to him,Omnia quæcumque præceperit dominus noster rex,“Everything whatsoever that our lord the king will command, libenter exequemur servi tui.we your servants shall carry out willingly.”
Egressus est ergo rex et universa domus ejus pedibus suis:Therefore, the king departed, with his entire household on foot.et dereliquit rex decem mulieres concubinas ad custodiendam domum. And the king left behind ten women of the concubines to care for the house.
Egressusque rex et omnis Israël pedibus suis,And having gone forth on foot, stetit procul a domo:the king and all of Israel stood at a distance from the house.
et universi servi ejus ambulabant juxta eum,And all his servants were walking beside him.et legiones Cerethi,And the legions of the Cerethiteset Phelethi, and Phelethites,et omnes Gethæi,and all the Gittites, pugnatores validi, powerful fighters, sexcenti viri qui secuti eum fuerant de Geth pedites, six hundred men who had followed him from Gath on foot,præcedebant regem.were preceding the king.
Dixit autem rex ad Ethai Gethæum:Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite:Cur venis nobiscum?“Why do you come with us?revertere,Returnet habita cum rege, and live with the king.quia peregrinus es,For you are a stranger,et egressus es de loco tuo.and you departed from your own place.
Heri venisti,You arrived yesterday.et hodie compelleris nobiscum egredi? And today should you be compelled to go away with us?ego autem vadam quo iturus sum:For I should go to the place where I am going.revertere,But you should return,et reduc tecum fratres tuos, and lead your own brothers back with you.et Dominus faciet tecum misericordiam et veritatem,And the Lord will show mercy and truth to you, quia ostendisti gratiam et fidem.because you have shown grace and faith.”
Et respondit Ethai regi dicens:And Ittai responded to the king,Vivit Dominus,by saying,et vivit dominus meus rex,“As the Lord lives, quoniam in quocumque loco fueris, and as my lord the king lives, domine mi rex,in whatever place you will be,sive in morte,my lord the king, sive in vita, whether in death or in life, ibi erit servus tuus.your servant will be there.”
Et ait David Ethai:And David said to Ittai,Veni,“Come,et transi.and pass over.”Et transivit Ethai Gethæus,And Ittai the Gittite passed over,et omnes viri qui cum eo erant, and all the men who were with him,et reliqua multitudo.and the rest of the multitude.
Omnesque flebant voce magna,And they all wept with a great voice,et universus populus transibat:and all the people passed over.rex quoque transgrediebatur torrentem Cedron,The king also passed over the torrent Kidron.et cunctus populus incedebat contra viam quæ respicit ad desertum. And all the people advanced opposite the way which looks out toward the desert.
Venit autem et Sadoc sacerdos,Now Zadok the priest also went,et universi Levitæ cum eo,and all the Levites went with him, portantes arcam fœderis Dei:carrying the ark of the covenant of God.et deposuerunt arcam Dei.And they set down the ark of God.Et ascendit Abiathar,And Abiathar went up,donec expletus esset omnis populus qui egressus fuerat de civitate.until all the people who had departed from the city had gone by.
Et dixit rex ad Sadoc:And the king said to Zadok:Reporta arcam Dei in urbem:“Carry back the ark of God into the city.si invenero gratiam in oculis Domini,If I shall find grace in the sight of the Lord, reducet me,he will lead me back.et ostendet mihi eam, et tabernaculum suum. And he will show it to me in his tabernacle.
Si autem dixerit mihi:But if he will say to me,Non places:‘You are not pleasing,’præsto sum:I am ready.faciat quod bonum est coram se.Let him do whatever is good in his own sight.”
Et dixit rex ad Sadoc sacerdotem:And the king said to Zadok the priest:O videns,“O seer, revertere in civitatem in pace:return into the city in peace.et Achimaas filius tuus,And let your son Ahimaaz,et Jonathas filius Abiathar, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar, duo filii vestri, your two sons, sint vobiscum.be with you.
Ecce ego abscondar in campestribus deserti,Behold, I will hide in the plains of the desert, donec veniat sermo a vobis indicans mihi.until word from you may arrive to inform me.”
Reportaverunt ergo SadocTherefore,et Abiathar arcam Dei in Jerusalem,Zadok and Abiathar carried back the ark of God into Jerusalem,et manserunt ibi.and they remained there.
Porro David ascendebat clivum Olivarum,But David ascended to the Mount of Olives, scandens et flens, climbing and weeping, nudis pedibus incedens, advancing with bare feet and with his head covered.et operto capite:Moreover, sed et omnis populus qui erat cum eo,all the people who were with him ascended, operto capite ascendebat plorans.weeping with their heads covered.
Nuntiatum est autem David quod et Achitophel esset in conjuratione cum Absalom:Then it was reported to David that Ahithophel also had joined in swearing with Absalom.dixitque David:And David said, “O Lord,Infatua,I beg you,quæso, Domine, consilium Achitophel.to uncover the foolishness of the counsel of Ahithophel.”
Cumque ascenderet David summitatem montis in quo adoraturus erat Dominum,And when David had ascended to the summit of the mountain, ecce occurrit ei Chusai Arachites, where he was going to adore the Lord, scissa veste, behold Hushai the Archite met him,et terra pleno capite.with his garment torn and his head covered with soil.
Et dixit ei David:And David said to him:Si veneris mecum,“If you come with me,eris mihi oneri:you will be a burden to me.
si autem in civitatem revertaris,But if you return to the city,et dixeris Absalom:and you say to Absalom,Servus tuus sum,‘I am your servant, rex:O king;sicut fui servus patris tui, just as I have been the servant of your father, sic ero servus tuus:so too will I be your servant,’dissipabis consilium Achitophel.you will destroy the counsel of Ahithophel
Habes autem tecum Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotes:And you have with you the priests Zadok and Abiathar.et omne verbum quodcumque audieris de domo regis,And any word whatsoever that you will hear from the house of the king, indicabis Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotibus.you shall reveal it to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests.
Sunt autem cum eis duo filii eorum Achimaas filius Sadoc,Now with them are their two sons Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok,et Jonathas filius Abiathar:and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar.et mittetis per eos ad me omne verbum quod audieritis. And you shall send to me by them every word that you will have heard.”
Veniente ergo Chusai amico David in civitatem, Absalom quoque ingressus est Jerusalem. Therefore, Hushai, the friend of David, went into the city. And Absalom also entered into Jerusalem.
