Cumque David transisset paululum montis verticem,And when David had passed a little beyond the top of the mountain, apparuit Siba puer Miphiboseth in occursum ejus,Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, appeared to meet him,cum duobus asinis, with two donkeys, qui onerati erant ducentis panibus, which were burdened with two hundred loaves,et centum alligaturis uvæ passæ,and one hundred bunches of dried grapes,et centum massis palatharum, and one hundred masses of dried figs,et utre vini.and a skin of wine.
Et dixit rex Sibæ:And the king said to Ziba,Quid sibi volunt hæc?“What do you intend to do with these things?”Responditque Siba:And Ziba responded:Asini,“The donkeys are for the household of the king, domesticis regis ut sedeant:so that they may sit.panes et palathæ ad vescendum pueris tuis:And the loaves and dried figs are for your servants to eat.vinum autem ut bibat siquis defecerit in deserto. But the wine is for anyone to drink who may be faint in the desert.”
Et ait rex:And the king said,Ubi est filius domini tui?“Where is the son of your lord?”Responditque Siba regi:And Ziba answered the king:Remansit in Jerusalem,“He remained in Jerusalem, saying, dicens:‘Today,Hodie restituet mihi domus Israël regnum patris mei.the house of Israel will restore the kingdom of my father to me.’”
Et ait rex Sibæ:And the king said to Ziba,Tua sint omnia quæ fuerunt Miphiboseth.“All the things which were for Mephibosheth are now yours.”Dixitque Siba:And Ziba said,Oro ut inveniam gratiam coram te,“I beg you that I may find grace before you, domine mi rex.my lord the king.”
Venit ergo rex David usque Bahurim:Then king David went as far as Bahurim.et ecce egrediebatur inde vir de cognatione domus Saul,And behold, a man from the kindred of the house of Saul, named Shimei, nomine Semei, the son of Gera, filius Gera:went out from there.procedebatque egrediens,And going out, he continued on,et maledicebat, and he was cursing,
mittebatque lapides contra David et contra universos servos regis David:and throwing stones against David and against all the servants of king David.omnis autem populus, et universi bellatores, a dextro et a sinistro latere regis incedebant. And all the people and all the warriors were traveling to the right and to the left sides of the king.
Ita autem loquebatur Semei cum malediceret regi:And so, as he was cursing the king, Shimei said:Egredere,“Go away, egredere,go away, vir sanguinum, you man of blood,et vir Belial.and you man of Belial!
Reddidit tibi Dominus universum sanguinem domus Saul:The Lord has repaid you for all the blood of the house of Saul.quoniam invasisti regnum pro eo,For you have usurped the kingdom in place of him.et dedit Dominus regnum in manu Absalom filii tui:And so, the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Absalom, your son.et ecce premunt te mala tua,And behold, your evils press close upon you, quoniam vir sanguinum es.because you are a man of blood.”
Dixit autem Abisai filius Sarviæ regi:Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, said to the king:Quare maledicit canis hic mortuus domino meo regi?“Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king?vadam, et amputabo caput ejus.Let me go and cut off his head.”
Et ait rex:And the king said:Quid mihi“What is it to me and to all of you,et vobis est,O sons of Zeruiah?filii Sarviæ?Permit him, dimittite eum,so that he may curse.ut maledicat:For the Lord has commanded him to curse David.Dominus enim præcepit ei ut malediceret David:And who is the one who would dare to say,et quis est qui audeat dicere quare sic fecerit?‘Why has he done so?’”
Et ait rex Abisai, et universis servis suis:And the king said to Abishai and to all his servants: “Behold,Ecce filius meus qui egressus est de utero meo,my son, who went forth from my loins, is seeking my life.quærit animam meam: quanto magis nunc filius Jemini? How much more does a son of Benjamin do so now? Permit him,Dimittite eum ut maledicat juxta præceptum Domini:so that he may curse, in accord with the command of the Lord.
si forte respiciat Dominus afflictionem meam,Perhaps the Lord may look with favor upon my affliction,et reddat mihi Dominus bonum pro maledictione hac hodierna.and the Lord may repay me good, in place of the cursing of this day.”
Ambulabat itaque DavidAnd so,et socii ejus per viam cum eo.David continued walking along the way,Semei autem per jugum montis ex latere contra illum gradiebatur, and his associates with him.maledicens,But Shimei was advancing along the ridge of the mountain on the side opposite him,et mittens lapides adversum eum, cursing and throwing stones at him, terramque spargens.and scattering dirt.
Venit itaque rex,And the king and the entire people with him,et universus populus cum eo lassus, being weary,et refocillati sunt ibi.went and refreshed themselves there.
Absalom autem et omnis populus ejus ingressi sunt Jerusalem,But Absalom and all his people entered into Jerusalem. Moreover, sed et Achitophel cum eo.Ahithophel was with him.
Cum autem venisset Chusai Arachites amicus David ad Absalom, locutus est ad eum: Salve rex, salve rex.And when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, had gone to Absalom, he said to him: “May you be well, O king! May you be well, O king!”
Ad quem Absalom: Hæc est,And Absalom said to him:inquit, gratia tua ad amicum tuum?“Is this your kindness to your friend?quare non ivisti cum amico tuo?Why did you not go with your friend?”
Responditque Chusai ad Absalom:And Hushai responded to Absalom:Nequaquam:“By no means!quia illius ero,For I will be his, quem elegit Dominus, whom the Lord has chosen.et omnis hic populus,And I, and all this people,et universus Israël:and all of Israel,et cum eo manebo.will remain with him.
Sed ut et hoc inferam,But then too, I declare this:cui ego serviturus sum? nonne filio regis?whom should I serve? Is it not the son of the king?Sicut parui patri tuo,Just as I have been subject to your father, ita parebo et tibi.so will I be subject to you also.”
Dixit autem Absalom ad Achitophel:Then Absalom said to Ahithophel,Inite consilium quid agere debeamus.“Present a counsel as to what we ought to do.”
Et ait Achitophel ad Absalom:And Ahithophel said to Absalom:Ingredere ad concubinas patris tui,“Enter to the concubines of your father, quas dimisit ad custodiendam domum:whom he left behind in order to care for the house.ut cum audierit omnis Israël quod fœdaveris patrem tuum,Thus, when all of Israel will hear that you disgraced your father, roborentur tecum manus eorum.their hands may be strengthened with you.”
Tetenderunt ergo Absalom tabernaculum in solario,Therefore, they spread a tent for Absalom on the rooftop.ingressusque est ad concubinas patris sui coram universo Israël.And he entered to the concubines of his father in the sight of all Israel.
Consilium autem Achitophel quod dabat in diebus illis,Now the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, quasi si quis consuleret Deum:was treated as if one were consulting God.sic erat omne consilium Achitophel,So was every counsel of Ahithophel,et cum esset cum David, both when he was with David,et cum esset cum Absalom.and when he was with Absalom.
