Dixit ergo Achitophel ad Absalom:Then Ahithophel said to Absalom:Eligam mihi duodecim millia virorum,“I will choose for myself twelve thousand men,et consurgens persequar David hac nocte.and rising up, I will pursue David this night.
Et irruens super eum (quippe qui lassus est,And rushing against him,et solutis manibus),for he is weary and has weakened hands, percutiam eum:I will strike him.cumque fugerit omnis populus qui cum eo est,And when all the people who are with him will have fled, percutiam regem desolatum.I will strike down the king in isolation.
Et reducam universum populum,And I will lead back the entire people, quomodo unus homo reverti solet:returning in the manner of one man.unum enim virum tu quæris:For you are seeking only one man.et omnis populus erit in pace. And all the people shall be in peace.”
Placuitque sermo ejus Absalom,And this word pleased Absalomet cunctis majoribus natu Israël.and all those greater by birth of Israel.
Ait autem Absalom:But Absalom said,Vocate Chusai Arachiten,“Summon Hushai the Archite,et audiamus quid etiam ipse dicat.and let us hear what he also may say.”
Cumque venisset Chusai ad Absalom,And when Hushai had gone to Absalom, ait Absalom ad eum:Absalom said to him:Hujuscemodi sermonem locutus est Achitophel:“Ahithophel has spoken a word in this manner.facere debemus an non?Should we do it or not?quod das consilium? What counsel do you give?”
Et dixit Chusai ad Absalom:And Hushai said to Absalom,Non est bonum consilium quod dedit Achitophel hac vice.“The counsel that Ahithophel has given at this time is not good.”
Et rursum intulit Chusai:And again Hushai declared,Tu nosti patrem tuum,“You know your father,et viros qui cum eo sunt, and the men who are with him, esse fortissimos et amaro animo,to be very strong and bitter in soul, veluti si ursa raptis catulis in saltu sæviat:comparable to a bear raging in the forest when her young have been taken away.sed et pater tuus vir bellator est,Moreover, your father is a man of war,nec morabitur cum populo.and so he will not live among the people.
Forsitan nunc latitat in foveis,Perhaps now he hides in pits, or in another place, aut in uno, wherever he wills.quo voluerit, loco:And if by chance,et cum ceciderit unus quilibet in principio,in the beginning, anyone may fall, whoever hears about it,audiet quicumque audierit,no matter what he has heard,et dicet:will say,Facta est plaga in populo qui sequebatur Absalom.‘There is a slaughter among the people who were following Absalom.’
Et fortissimus quisque,And even the very strong, cujus cor est quasi leonis, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, pavore solvetur:will be weakened out of fear.scit enim omnis populus Israël fortem esse patrem tuum,For all the people of Israel know your father to be a valiant man,et robustos omnes qui cum eo sunt.and that all who are with him are robust.
Sed hoc mihi videtur rectum esse consilium. But this seems to me to be the right counsel:Congregetur ad te universus Israël,Let all of Israel be gathered to you,a Dan usque Bersabee, from Dan to Beersheba, quasi arena maris innumerabilis:like the sand of the sea which is innumerable.et tu eris in medio eorum. And you will be in their midst.
Et irruemus super eum in quocumque loco inventus fuerit,And we shall rush against him in whatever place he will have been found.et operiemus eum,And we shall cover him, sicut cadere solet ros super terram:as the dew usually falls upon the ground.et non relinquemus de viris qui cum eo sunt, ne unum quidem. And we shall not leave behind even one of the men who are with him.
Quod si urbem aliquam fuerit ingressus,And if he will enter into any city, circumdabit omnis Israël civitati illi funes, all of Israel shall encircle that city with ropes.et trahemus eam in torrentem,And we will pull it into the torrent,ut non reperiatur ne calculus quidem ex ea.so that there may not be found even one small stone from it.”
Dixitque Absalom, et omnes viri Israël:And Absalom, with all the men of Israel,Melius est consilium Chusai Arachitæ, consilio Achitophel:said: “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.”Domini autem nutu dissipatum est consilium Achitophel utile,So, by an act of the Lord, the useful counsel of Ahithophel was defeated,ut induceret Dominus super Absalom malum.in order that the Lord might lead evil over Absalom.
Et ait Chusai Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotibus:And Hushai said to the priests, Zadok and Abiathar:Hoc et hoc modo consilium dedit Achitophel Absalom et senioribus Israël:“Ahithophel gave counsel to Absalom and to the elders of Israel in this and that manner.et ego tale et tale dedi consilium. And I gave counsel in such and such a manner.
Nunc ergo mittite cito,Now therefore, send quickly,et nuntiate David, and report to David, dicentes: Ne moreris nocte hac in campestribus deserti, saying: ‘You shall not stay this night in the plains of the desert.sed absque dilatione transgredere:Instead, without delay, go across.ne forte absorbeatur rex,Otherwise the king may be engulfed,et omnis populus qui cum eo est.and all the people who are with him.’”
Jonathas autem et Achimaas stabant juxta fontem Rogel:But Jonathan and Ahimaaz remained beside the Fountain of Rogel.abiit ancilla et nuntiavit eis.And a handmaid went away and reported it to them.Et illi profecti sunt,And they set out,ut referrent ad regem David nuntium:so that they might carry the report to king David.non enim poterant videri,For they could not be seen, aut introire civitatem.nor enter into the city.
Vidit autem eos quidam puer,But a certain young man saw them,et indicavit Absalom:and he revealed it to Absalom.illi vero concito gradu ingressi sunt domum cujusdam viri in Bahurim,Yet truly, they traveled quickly and entered into the house of a certain man in Bahurim, qui habebat puteum in vestibulo suo:who had a well in his court,et descenderunt in eum.and they descended into it.
Tulit autem mulier,Then a woman tooket expandit velamen super os putei, and spread a covering over the mouth of the well, quasi siccans ptisanas:as if drying hulled barley.et sic latuit res.And so the matter was hidden.
Cumque venissent servi Absalom in domum,And when the servants of Absalom had entered into the house,ad mulierem dixerunt:they said to the woman,Ubi est Achimaas et Jonathas?“Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”Et respondit eis mulier:And the woman responded to them,Transierunt festinanter,“They passed through hurriedly, gustata paululum aqua.after they had taken a little water.”At hi qui quærebant,But those who were seeking them, cum non reperissent, when they had not found them, reversi sunt in Jerusalem.returned to Jerusalem.
Cumque abiissent,And when they had gone, ascenderunt illi de puteo, they ascended from the well.et pergentes nuntiaverunt regi David,And traveling, they reported to king David,et dixerunt:and they said:Surgite,“Rise up,et transite cito fluvium:and go across the river quickly.quoniam hujuscemodi dedit consilium contra vos Achitophel. For Ahithophel has given a counsel of this kind against you.”
Surrexit ergo David,Therefore,et omnis populus qui cum eo erat,David rose up,et transierunt Jordanem, and all the people who were with him, donec dilucesceret:and they crossed over the Jordan,et ne unus quidem residuus fuit, until first light.qui non transisset fluvium. And not even one of them was left behind who had not crossed over the river.
Porro Achitophel videns quod non fuisset factum consilium suum,Then Ahithophel, stravit asinum suum, seeing that his counsel had not been done, surrexitque, saddled his donkey,et abiit in domum suam et in civitatem suam:and he rose up and went away to his own house and to his own city.et disposita domo sua,And putting his house in order, suspendio interiit,he killed himself by hanging.et sepultus est in sepulchro patris sui.And he was buried in the sepulcher of his father.
David autem venit in castra,Then David went to the encampment,et Absalom transivit Jordanem, and Absalom crossed over the Jordan, ipse et omnes viri Israël cum eo.he and all the men of Israel with him.
Amasam vero constituit Absalom pro Joab super exercitum:Truly, Absalom appointed Amasa in place of Joab over the army.Amasa autem erat filius viri qui vocabatur Jetra de Jezraëli,Now Amasa was the son of a man who was called Ithra of Jezrael, qui ingressus est ad Abigail filiam Naas, who entered to Abigail, the daughter of Nahash, sororem Sarviæ,the sister of Zeruiah,quæ fuit mater Joab.who was the mother of Joab.
Et castrametatus est Israël cum Absalom in terra Galaad. And Israel made camp with Absalom in the land of Gilead.
Cumque venisset David in castra,And when David had arrived at the encampment, Shobi,Sobi filius Naas de Rabbath filiorum Ammon, the son of Nahash, from Rabbah, of the sons of Ammon,et Machir filius Ammihel de Lodabar, and Machir, the son of Ammiel of Lodebar,et Berzellai Galaadites de Rogelim, and Barzillai, the Gileadite of Rogelim,
obtulerunt ei stratoria,brought to him bedding,et tapetia,and tapestries,et vasa fictilia,and earthen vessels,frumentum,and wheat,et hordeum,and barley,et farinam,and meal,et polentam,and cooked grain,et fabam,and beans,et lentem,and lentils,et frixum cicer,and fried chick peas,
et mel,and honey,et butyrum, and butter, oves, sheepet pingues vitulos:and fattened calves.dederuntque David,And they gave these to Davidet populo qui cum eo erat, and to the people who were with him to eat.ad vescendum:For they suspected that the people were faint with hungersuspicati enim sunt populum fame et siti fatigari in deserto.and thirst in the desert.
