Igitur post hæc consuluit David Dominum,And so, after these things, David consulted the Lord, dicens:saying,Num ascendam in unam de civitatibus Juda?“Shall I ascend to one of the cities of Judah?”Et ait Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him,Ascende.“Ascend.”Dixitque David: Quo ascendam? And David said, “To where shall I ascend?”Et respondit ei:And he responded to him,In Hebron.“To Hebron.”
Ascendit ergo David, et duæ uxores ejus,Therefore, David ascended with his two wives,Achinoam Jezraëlites,Ahinoam, the Jezreelite,et Abigail uxor Nabal Carmeli:and Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.
sed et viros, qui erant cum eo,And as for the men who were with him, duxit David singulos cum domo sua:David led forth each man with his household.et manserunt in oppidis Hebron. And they stayed in the towns of Hebron.
Veneruntque viri Juda,And the men of Judah went and anointed David there,et unxerunt ibi David ut regnaret super domum Juda.so that he would reign over the house of Judah.Et nuntiatum est David quod viri Jabes Galaad sepelissent Saul. And it was reported to David that the men of Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul.
Misit ergo David nuntios ad viros Jabes Galaad,Therefore, David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, dixitque ad eos:and he said to them:Benedicti vos Domino,“Blessed are you to the Lord, qui fecistis misericordiam hanc cum domino vestro Saul, who has accomplished this mercy with your lord Saul,et sepelistis eum.so that you would bury him.
Et nunc retribuet vobis quidem Dominus misericordiamAnd now,et veritatem:certainly, sedthe Lord will repay to you mercy and truth.et ego reddam gratiam,But I also will act with favor,eo quod fecistis verbum istud.because you have accomplished this word.
Confortentur manus vestræ,Let your hands be strengthened,et estote filii fortitudinis:and be sons of fortitude.licet enim mortuus sit dominus vester Saul,For even though your lord Saul has died, tamen me unxit domus Juda in regem sibi.still the house of Judah has anointed me as king over them.”
Abner autem filius Ner,Then Abner, the son of Ner,princeps exercitus Saul, the leader of the army of Saul, tulit Isboseth filium Saul, took Ishbosheth, the son of Saul,et circumduxit eum per castra, and he led him around, throughout the camp.
regemque constituit super Galaad,And he appointed him as king over Gilead,et super Gessuri, and over Geshuri,et super Jezraël,and over Jezreel,et super Ephraim, and over Ephraim,et super Benjamin, and over Benjamin,et super Israël universum.and over all of Israel.
Quadraginta annorum erat Isboseth filius Saul cum regnare cœpisset super Israël,Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, was forty years old when he had begun to rule over Israel.et duobus annis regnavit:And he reigned for two years.sola autem domus Juda sequebatur David. For only the house of Judah followed David.
Et fuit numerus dierum quos commoratus est David imperans in Hebron super domum Juda,And the number of the days, septem annorumduring which David was staying and ruling in Hebron over the house of Judah,et sex mensium.was seven years and six months.
Egressusque est Abner filius Ner, et pueri Isboseth filii Saul, de castris in Gabaon. And Abner, the son of Ner, and the youths of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, went out from the camp to Gibeon.
Porro Joab filius Sarviæ,Therefore, Joab, the son of Zeruiah,et pueri David, egressi sunt, and the youths of David,et occurrerunt eis juxta piscinam Gabaon.went out and met them beside the pool of Gibeon.Et cum in unum convenissent,And when they had convened together,e regione sederunt:they sat down opposite one another:hi ex una parte piscinæ,these on one side of the pool,et illi ex altera.and those on the other side.
Dixitque Abner ad Joab:And Abner said to Joab,Surgant pueri,“Let the youths rise upet ludant coram nobis.and play before us.”Et respondit Joab:And Joab answered,Surgant.“Let them rise up.”
Surrexerunt ergo,Therefore,et transierunt numero duodecim de Benjamin, they rose up and crossed over, twelve in number of Benjamin,ex parte Isboseth filii Saul, from the side of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul,et duodecim de pueris David.and twelve of the youths of David.
Apprehensoque unusquisque capite comparis sui,And each one, defixit gladium in latus contrarii, taking hold of his peer by the head,et ceciderunt simul:fixed a sword into the side of his adversary, vocatumque est nomen loci illius:and they fell down together.Ager robustorum,And the name of that place was called:in Gabaon. The Field of the Valiant in Gibeon.
Et ortum est bellum durum satis in die illa:And a very harsh war rose up on that day. And Abner, fugatusque est Abner et viri Israël a pueris David.with the men of Israel, was put to flight by the youths of David.
Erant autem ibi tres filii Sarviæ,Now the three sons of Zeruiah were in that place:Joab,Joab,et Abisai, and Abishai,et Asaël:and Asahel.porro Asaël cursor velocissimus fuit,And Asahel was a very swift runner, quasi unus de capreis quæ morantur in silvis.like one of the deer that lives in the forest.
Persequebatur autem Asaël Abner,And Asahel pursued Abner,et non declinavit ad dextram neque ad sinistram omittens persequi Abner.and he did not turn aside to the right, nor to the left, to cease in the pursuit of Abner.
Respexit itaque Abner post tergum suum,And so, Abner looked behind his back, and he said,et ait: Tune es Asaël?“Are you not Asahel?”Qui respondit:And he responded,Ego sum.“I am.”
Dixitque ei Abner:And Abner said to him,Vade ad dexteram,“Go to the right, sive ad sinistram,or to the left,et apprehende unum de adolescentibus, and apprehend one of the youths,et tolle tibi spolia ejus.and take his spoils for yourself.”Noluit autem Asaël omittere quin urgeret eum.But Asahel was not willing to cease from pursuing him closely.
Rursumque locutus est Abner ad Asaël:And again, Abner said to Asahel: “Withdraw,Recede, noli me sequi, and do not choose to follow me.ne compellar confodere te in terram,Otherwise, I will be compelled to stab you to the ground,et levare non potero faciem meam ad Joab fratrem tuum.and I will not be able to lift up my face before your brother, Joab.”
Qui audire contempsit,But he disdained to heed him,et noluit declinare:and he was not willing to turn aside.percussit ergo eum Abner aversa hasta in inguine,Therefore, turning, Abner struck him with his spear in the groin,et transfodit, et mortuus est in eodem loco:and he pierced him through, and he died in the same place.omnesque qui transibant per locum illum,And all those who would pass by the place,in quo ceciderat Asaël et mortuus erat,in which Asahel had fallen and died, subsistebant.would stand still.
Persequentibus autem Joab et Abisai fugientem Abner,Now while Joab and Abishai were pursuing Abner as he fled, sol occubuit:the sun set.et venerunt usque ad collem aquæductus,And they went as far as the Hill of the Aqueduct, qui est ex adverso vallis itineris deserti in Gabaon.which is opposite the valley on the way of the desert in Gibeon.
Congregatique sunt filii Benjamin ad Abner:And the sons of Benjamin gathered themselves to Abner.et conglobati in unum cuneum,And being joined in one battle line, steterunt in summitate tumuli unius.they stood at the summit of a hill.
Et exclamavit Abner ad Joab,And Abner cried out to Joab,et ait:and he said:Num usque ad internecionem tuus mucro desæviet?“Will your sword rage unto utter destruction?an ignoras quod periculosa sit desperatio? Are you ignorant that it is perilous to act in desperation?usquequo non dicis populo ut omittat persequi fratres suos? How long will you not tell the people to cease from the pursuit of their brothers?”
Et ait Joab:And Joab said:Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,si locutus fuisses,if you had spoken in the morning, mane recessisset populus persequens fratrem suum.the people would have withdrawn from pursuing their brothers.”
Insonuit ergo Joab buccina,Therefore, Joab sounded the trumpet,et stetit omnis exercitus, and the entire army stood still, nec persecuti sunt ultra Israël,and they did not pursue after Israel any more, neque iniere certamen.and they did not engage in conflict.
Abner autemThen Abner and his men went away,et viri ejus abierunt per campestria, all that night, tota nocte illa:through the plains.et transierunt Jordanem,And they crossed the Jordan,et lustrata omni Beth-horon,and having roamed throughout all of Beth-horon,venerunt ad castra.they arrived in the camp.
Porro Joab reversus,But Joab, omisso Abner, returning after he had released Abner, congregavit omnem populum:gathered together all the people.et defuerunt de pueris David decemAnd of David’s youths,et novem viri, they were missing nineteen men, excepto Asaële.aside from Asahel.
Servi autem David percusserunt de Benjamin,But of Benjamin and of the men who were with Abner,et de viris qui erant cum Abner, trecentos sexaginta, the servants of David had struck three hundred and sixty, qui et mortui sunt.who also died.
Tuleruntque Asaël,And they took Asahel,et sepelierunt eum in sepulchro patris sui in Bethlehem:and they buried him in the sepulcher of his father at Bethlehem.et ambulaverunt tota nocte Joab et viri qui erant cum eo,And Joab, and the men who were with him, walked throughout the night,et in ipso crepusculo pervenerunt in Hebron.and they arrived in Hebron at the very break of day.
