Facta est ergo longa concertatio inter domum Saul et inter domum David:Then a long struggle occurred between the house of Saul and the house of David,David proficiscens, et semper seipso robustior, with David prospering and growing ever stronger, domus autem Saul decrescens quotidie.but the house of Saul decreasing daily.
Natique sunt filii David in Hebron:And sons were born to David in Hebron.fuitque primogenitus ejus Amnon,And his firstborn son was Amnon,de Achinoam Jezraëlitide.from Ahinoam the Jezreelite.
Et post eum Cheleab,And after him, there was Chileab,de Abigail uxore Nabal Carmeli:from Abigail, the wife of Nabal of Carmel.porro tertius Absalom,Then the third was Absalom, filius Maacha filiæ Tholmai regis Gessur.the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur.
Quartus autem Adonias,Then the fourth was Adonijah, filius Haggith:the son of Haggith.et quintus Saphathia,And the fifth was Shephatiah, filius Abital.the son of Abital.
Sextus quoque Jethraam,Also, the sixth was Ithream,de Egla uxore David:from Eglah, the wife of David.hi nati sunt David in Hebron. These were born to David at Hebron.
Cum ergo esset prælium inter domum Saul et domum David,Then, while there was a battle between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner,Abner filius Ner regebat domum Saul.the son of Ner, was reigning over the house of Saul.
Fuerat autem Sauli concubina nomine Respha,Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, filia Aja.the daughter of Aiah.Dixitque Isboseth ad Abner:And Ishbosheth said to Abner,
Quare ingressus es ad concubinam patris mei?“Why did you enter to the concubine of my father?” But he,Qui iratus nimis propter verba Isboseth, being exceedingly angry at the words of Ishbosheth, ait:said:Numquid caput canis ego sum adversum Judam hodie,“Am I the head of a dog against Judah this day?qui fecerim misericordiam super domum Saul patris tui,I have shown mercy to the house of Saul, your father,et super fratres et proximos ejus, et non tradidi te in manus David, and to his brothers and friends. And I have not delivered you into the hands of David.et tu requisisti in me quod argueres pro muliere hodie? And yet today you have sought me, so that you might rebuke me over a woman?
Hæc faciat Deus Abner,May God do these things to Abner,et hæc addat ei,and may he add these other things, nisi quomodo juravit Dominus David,if, in the same way that the Lord swore to David, sic faciam cum eo,I do not do so with him:
ut transferatur regnum de domo Saul, that the kingdom be transferred from the house of Saul,et elevetur thronus David super Israël et super Judam, and that the throne of David be elevated over Israel and over Judah,a Dan usque Bersabee.from Dan to Beersheba.”
Et non potuit respondere ei quidquam,And he was not able to respond anything to him, quia metuebat illum.because he was in fear of him.
Misit ergo Abner nuntios ad David pro se dicentes:Therefore, Abner sent messengers to David for himself, saying,Cujus est terra?“Whose is the land?”et ut loquerentur:and so that they would say,Fac mecum amicitias,“Make a friendship with me,et erit manus mea tecum, and my hand will be with you,et reducam ad te universum Israël.and I will lead back all of Israel to you.”
Qui ait:And he said:Optime:“It is best.ego faciam tecum amicitias:I will make a friendship with you.sed unam rem peto a te,But one thing I ask of you, dicens:saying:Non videbis faciem meam antequam adduxeris Michol filiam Saul:You shall not see my face before you bring Michal, the daughter of Saul.et sic venies,And in this way,et videbis me.you shall come, and see me.”
Misit autem David nuntios ad Isboseth filium Saul,Then David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, dicens:saying,Redde uxorem meam Michol, quam despondi mihi centum præputiis Philisthiim.“Restore my wife Michal, whom I espoused to myself for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”
Misit ergo Isboseth, et tulit eam a viro suo Phaltiel filio Lais. Therefore, Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband Paltiel, the son of Laish.
Sequebaturque eam vir suus,And her husband was following her, plorans usque Bahurim:weeping,et dixit ad eum Abner:as far as Bahurim.Vade,And Abner said to him,et revertere.“Go and return.”Qui reversus est.And he returned.
Sermonem quoque intulit Abner ad seniores Israël,Likewise, Abner sent word to the elders of Israel, dicens:saying:Tam heri quam nudiustertius quærebatis David ut regnaret super vos.“As much yesterday as the day before, you were seeking David, so that he might reign over you.
Nunc ergo facite:Therefore, accomplish it now.quoniam Dominus locutus est ad David,For the Lord has spoken to David, dicens:saying:In manu servi mei David salvabo populum meum Israël de manu Philisthiim, et omnium inimicorum ejus.‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and of all their enemies.’”
Locutus est autem Abner etiam ad Benjamin. Then Abner also spoke to Benjamin.Et abiit ut loqueretur ad David in Hebron omnia quæ placuerant IsraëliAnd he went away,et universo Benjamin.so that he might speak to David in Hebron all that would be pleasing to Israel and to all of Benjamin.
Venitque ad David in Hebron cum viginti viris:And he went to David in Hebron with twenty men.et fecit David Abner,And David made a feast for Abner,et viris ejus qui venerant cum eo, convivium.and for his men who had arrived with him.
Et dixit Abner ad David: Surgam,And Abner said to David, “I will rise up,ut congregem ad te dominum meum regem omnem Israël,so that I may gather all of Israel to you, my lord the king,et ineam tecum fœdus, et imperes omnibus, and so that I may enter into a pact with you, sicut desiderat anima tua.and so that you may reign over all,Cum ergo deduxisset David Abner, just as your soul desires.” Then, when David had led Abner away,et ille isset in pace, and he had departed in peace,
statim pueri David et Joab venerunt, immediately the servants of David and of Joab arrived,cæsis latronibus, after having slain robbers, cum præda magna nimis:with exceedingly great spoils.Abner autem non erat cum David in Hebron,But Abner was not with David in Hebron.quia jam dimiserat eum,For by then he had sent him away,et profectus fuerat in pace.and he had set out in peace.
Et Joab,And Joab,et omnis exercitus qui erat cum eo,and the entire army that was with him, postea venerunt:had arrived afterward.nuntiatum est itaque Joab a narrantibus:And so, it was reported to Joab, explaining that Abner,Venit Abner filius Ner ad regem, the son of Ner, went to the king,et dimisit eum,and he dismissed him,et abiit in pace.and he went away in peace.
Et ingressus est Joab ad regem,And Joab entered to the king,et ait:and he said:Quid fecisti?“What have you done?Ecce venit Abner ad te:Behold, quare dimisisti eum,Abner came to you.et abiitWhy did you dismiss him,et recessit?so that he has gone and departed?
ignoras Abner filium Ner,Do you not know, about Abner, the son of Ner,quoniam ad hoc venit ad te ut deciperet te,that he came to you for this, so that he might deceive you,et sciret exitum tuum et introitum tuum, and might know of your departure and your return,et nosset omnia quæ agis?and so that he might know all that you do?”
Egressus itaque Joab a David,And so, Joab, going out from David, misit nuntios post Abner, sent messengers after Abner,et reduxit eum a cisterna Sira, and he brought him back from the cistern of Sirah, ignorante David.without David knowing.
Cumque rediisset Abner in Hebron,And when Abner had returned to Hebron, seorsum adduxit eum Joab ad medium portæ ut loqueretur ei,Joab took him alone to the middle of the gate, so that he might speak to him, but with deceit.in dolo:And there,et percussit illum ibi in inguine,he stabbed him in the groin, and he died,et mortuus est in ultionem sanguinis Asaël fratris ejus.in revenge for the blood of Asahel, his brother.
Quod cum audisset David rem jam gestam,And when David had heard of it,ait: Mundus ego sum,now that the matter was done,et regnum meum apud Dominum usque in sempiternum,he said: “I and my kingdom are clean before the Lord, even forever,a sanguine Abner filii Ner:of the blood of Abner, the son of Ner.
et veniat super caput Joab,And may it fall upon the head of Joab,et super omnem domum patris ejus:and upon the entire house of his father.nec deficiat de domo Joab fluxum seminis sustinens,And may there not fail to be, in the house of Joab, one who suffers from a flow of seed,et leprosus,or one who is leprous,et tenens fusum,or one who is effeminate,et cadens gladio,or one who falls by the sword,et indigens pane.or one who is in need of bread.”
Igitur Joab et Abisai frater ejus interfecerunt Abner,And so, Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner,eo quod occidisset Asaël fratrem eorum in Gabaon in prælio.because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon, during the battle.
Dixit autem David ad Joab,Then David said to Joab,et ad omnem populum qui erat cum eo:and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your garments,Scindite vestimenta vestra, and gird yourselves with sackcloth,et accingimini saccis, et plangite ante exequias Abner.and mourn before the funeral procession of Abner.” Moreover,Porro rex David sequebatur feretrum.king David himself was following the casket.
Cumque sepelissent Abner in Hebron,And when they had buried Abner in Hebron, levavit rex David vocem suam, king David lifted up his voice,et flevit super tumulum Abner:and he wept over the burial mound of Abner.flevit autem et omnis populus. And all the people also wept.
Plangensque rex,And the king,et lugens Abner, mourningait:and lamenting Abner,Nequaquam ut mori solent ignavi, said:mortuus est Abner.“By no means has Abner died the way that cowards usually die.
Manus tuæ ligatæ non sunt,Your hands are not bound,et pedes tui non sunt compedibus aggravati:and your feet are not weighed down with fetters.sed sicut solent cadere coram filiis iniquitatis,But just as men often fall before the sons of iniquity, sic corruisti.so you have fallen.”Congeminansque omnis populus flevit super eum.And while repeating this, all the people wept over him.
Cumque venisset universa multitudo cibum capere cum David,And when the entire multitude had arrived to take food with David, clara adhuc die juravit David, while it was still broad daylight, dicens:David swore,Hæc faciat mihi Deus, saying,et hæc addat,“May God do these things to me,si ante occasum solis gustavero panemand may he add these other things, vel aliud quidquam.if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets.”
Omnisque populus audivit,And all the people heard it,et placuerunt eis cuncta quæ fecit rex in conspectu totius populi.and everything that the king did in the sight of the entire people was pleasing to them.
Et cognovit omne vulgus et universus Israël in die illa, quoniam non actum fuisset a rege ut occideretur Abner filius Ner.And every common person, and all of Israel, realized on that day that the killing of Abner, the son of Ner, had not been done by the king.
Dixit quoque rex ad servos suos:The king also said to his servants:Num ignoratis quoniam princeps et maximus cecidit hodie in Israël?“Could you be ignorant that a leader and a very great man has fallen today in Israel?
Ego autem adhuc delicatus,But I am still tender,et unctus rex:and yet anointed king.porro viri isti filii Sarviæ duri sunt mihi:And these men of the sons of Zeruiah are too harsh for me.retribuat Dominus facienti malum juxta malitiam suam.May the Lord repay whoever does evil in accord with his malice.”
