Locutus est autem David Domino verba carminis hujus in die qua liberavit eum Dominus de manu omnium inimicorum suorum,And David spoke to the Lord the words of this verse,et de manu Saul.in the day that the Lord freed him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
Et ait:And he said:Dominus petra mea,“The Lord is my rock,et robur meum, and my strength,et salvator meus.and my Savior.
Deus fortis meus:I will hope in him.sperabo in eum;God is my strong one, scutum meum, et cornu salutis meæ:my shield, and the horn of my salvation.elevator meus,He lifts me up,et refugium meum;and he is my refreshment.salvator meus:You, O my Savior,de iniquitate liberabis me.will free me from iniquity.
Laudabilem invocabo Dominum,I will call upon the Lord, who is praiseworthy;et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.and I will be saved from my enemies.
Quia circumdederunt me contritiones mortis:For the pangs of death have encircled me.torrentes Belial terruerunt me.The torrents of Belial have terrified me.
Funes inferni circumdederunt me:The ropes of Hell have encompassed me.prævenerunt me laquei mortis. The snares of death have intercepted me.
In tribulatione mea invocabo Dominum,In my tribulation, I will call upon the Lord,et ad Deum meum clamabo:and I will cry out to my God.et exaudiet de templo suo vocem meam,And he will heed my voice from his temple,et clamor meus veniet ad aures ejus.and my outcry will reach his ears.
Commota est et contremuit terra; The earth was shaken, fundamenta montium concussa sunt, and it quaked.et conquassata:The foundations of the mountains were struck together and violently shaken, quoniam iratus est eis.because he was angry with them.
Ascendit fumus de naribus ejus,Smoke ascends from his nostrils,et ignis de ore ejus vorabit:and fire from his mouth will devour;carbones succensi sunt ab eo.coals have been kindled by it.
Inclinavit cælos,He bent down the heavens,et descendit:and it descended;et caligo sub pedibus ejus.and a fog was beneath his feet.
Et ascendit super cherubim,And he climbed upon the cherubim,et volavit:and he flew;et lapsus est super pennas venti.and he slid upon the wings of the wind.
Posuit tenebras in circuitu suo latibulum,He set darkness as a hiding place around himself, cribrans aquas de nubibus cælorum.with waters sifted from the clouds of the heavens.
Præ fulgore in conspectu ejus,By means of the brightness of his glance, succensi sunt carbones ignis.coals of fire were kindled.
Tonabit de cælo Dominus,The Lord will thunder from heaven;et excelsus dabit vocem suam.and the Most High will utter his voice.
Misit sagittasHe shot arrows,et dissipavit eos;and he scattered them;fulgur, lightning,et consumpsit eos.and he consumed them.
Et apparuerunt effusiones maris,And the overflow of the sea appeared,et revelata sunt fundamenta orbis ab increpatione Domini, and the foundations of the globe were revealed, at the rebuke of the Lord,ab inspiratione spiritus furoris ejus.at the exhale of the breath of his fury.
Misit de excelso,He sent from on high,et assumpsit me,and he took me up.et extraxit me de aquis multis. And he drew me out of many waters.
Liberavit me ab inimico meo potentissimo,He freed me from my most powerful enemyet ab his qui oderant me:and from those who had hated me.quoniam robustiores me erant. For they were too strong for me.
Prævenit me in die afflictionis meæ,He went before me in the day of my affliction,et factus est Dominus firmamentum meum.and the Lord became my firmament.
Et eduxit me in latitudinem:And he led me out to a wide-open place.liberavit me,He freed me,quia complacui ei.because I was pleasing to him.
Retribuet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam:The Lord will reward me according to my justice.et secundum munditiam manuum mearum reddet mihi. And he will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands.
Quia custodivi vias Domini,For I have kept to the ways of the Lord,et non egi impie a Deo meo.and I have not acted impiously before my God.
Omnia enim judicia ejus in conspectu meo,For all his judgments are in my sight.et præcepta ejus non amovi a me.And I have not removed his precepts from me.
Et ero perfectus cum eo,And I shall be perfect with him.et custodiam me ab iniquitate mea.And I shall guard myself from my own iniquity.
Et restituet mihi Dominus secundum justitiam meam,And the Lord will recompense me according to my justice,et secundum munditiam manuum mearum in conspectu oculorum suorum.and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes.
Cum sancto sanctus eris,With the holy one, you will be holy,et cum robusto perfectus.and with the strong one, you will be perfect.
Cum electo electus eris,With the elect one, you will be elect,et cum perverso perverteris.and with the perverse one, you will be perverse.
Et populum pauperem salvum facies:And you will bring to salvation the poor people, oculisque tuis excelsos humiliabis.and you will humble the exalted with your eyes.
Quia tu lucerna mea,For you are my lamp,Domine,O Lord.et tu,And you,Domine,O Lord,illuminabis tenebras meas.will illuminate my darkness.
In te enim curram accinctus:For in you, I will run girded.in Deo meo transiliam murum. In my God, I will leap over the wall.
Deus,God,immaculata via ejus;his way is immaculate;eloquium Domini igne examinatum:the eloquence of the Lord is an exacting fire.scutum est omnium sperantium in se.He is the shield of all who hope in him.
Quis est Deus præter Dominum,Who is God except the Lord?et quis fortis præter Deum nostrum? And who is strong except our God?
Deus qui accinxit me fortitudine,God, he has girded me with fortitude,et complanavit perfectam viam meam.and he has made my way perfect:
Coæquans pedes meos cervis, making my feet like the feet of the stag,et super excelsa mea statuens me;and stationing me upon my exalted places,
docens manus meas ad prælium, teaching my hands to do battle,et componens quasi arcum æreum brachia mea.and making my arms like a bow of brass.
Dedisti mihi clypeum salutis tuæ,You have given me the shield of your salvation.et mansuetudo tua multiplicavit me.And your mildness has multiplied me.
Dilatabis gressus meos subtus me,You will enlarge my steps under me,et non deficient tali mei.and my ankles will not fail.
Persequar inimicos meos,I will pursue my enemies,et conteram, and crush them.et non convertar donec consumam eos.And I will not turn back, until I consume them.
Consumam eos et confringam,I will consume them and break them apart,ut non consurgant:so that they cannot rise up;cadent sub pedibus meis.they will fall under my feet.
Accinxisti me fortitudine ad prælium:You have girded me with strength for the battle.incurvasti resistentes mihi subtus me.Those who resisted me, you have bent down under me.
Inimicos meos dedisti mihi dorsum; You have caused my enemies to turn their back to me;odientes me,they have hatred for me,et disperdam eos.and I shall destroy them.
Clamabunt,They will cry out,et non erit qui salvet;and there will be no one to save;ad Dominum,to the Lord,et non exaudiet eos.and he will not heed them.
Delebo eos ut pulverem terræ;I will wipe them away like the dust of the earth.quasi lutum platearum comminuam eosI will break them apart and crush them, atque confringam.like the mud of the streets.
Salvabis me a contradictionibus populi mei;You will save me from the contradictions of my people.custodies me in caput gentium:You will preserve me to be the head of the Gentiles;populus quem ignoro serviet mihi.a people I do not know shall serve me.
Filii alieni resistent mihi; The sons of foreigners, who will resist me,auditu auris obedient mihi.at the hearing of the ear they will be obedient to me.
Filii alieni defluxerunt,The foreigners flowed away,et contrahentur in angustiis suis.but they will be drawn together in their anguishes.
Vivit Dominus,The Lord lives,et benedictus Deus meus, and my God is blessed.et exaltabitur Deus fortis salutis meæ.And the strong God of my salvation shall be exalted.
Deus qui das vindictas mihi,God gives me vindication,et dejicis populos sub me.and he casts down the peoples under me.
Qui educis me ab inimicis meis,He leads me away from my enemies,et a resistentibus mihi elevas me:and he lifts me up from those who resist me.a viro iniquo liberabis me.You will free me from the iniquitous man.
Propterea confitebor tibi,Because of this, I will confess to you,Domine, in gentibus,O Lord, among the Gentiles,et nomini tuo cantabo:and I will sing to your name:
magnificans salutes regis sui, magnifying the salvation of his king,et faciens misericordiam christo suo David, and showing mercy to David, his Christ,et semini ejus in sempiternum.and to his offspring forever.”
