Facta est quoque fames in diebus David tribus annis jugiter:And a famine occurred, during the days of David, for three years continuously.et consuluit David oraculum Domini. And David consulted the oracle of the Lord.Dixitque Dominus: Propter Saul,And the Lord said: “This is because of Saul,et domum ejus sanguinum, and his house of bloodshed.quia occidit Gabaonitas. For he killed the Gibeonites.”
Vocatis ergo Gabaonitis rex,Therefore, the king, calling for the Gibeonites, dixit ad eos (porro Gabaonitæ non erant de filiis Israël,spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the sons of Israel, sed reliquiæ Amorrhæorum:but were the remnant of the Amorites.filii quippe Israël juraverant eis,And the sons of Israel had sworn an oath to them,et voluit Saul percutere eos zelo, but Saul wished to strike them in zeal, quasi pro filiis Israël et Juda),as if on behalf of the sons of Israel and Judah.
dixit ergo David ad Gabaonitas:Therefore, David said to the Gibeonites:Quid faciam vobis?“What shall I do for you?et quod erit vestri piaculum,And what shall be your satisfaction,ut benedicatis hæreditati Domini?so that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?”
Dixeruntque ei Gabaonitæ:And the Gibeonites said to him:Non est nobis super argento et auro quæstio,“There is no quarrel for us over silver or gold, sed contra Saul, et contra domum ejus:but against Saul and against his house.neque volumus ut interficiatur homo de Israël.And we do not desire that any man of Israel be put to death.”Ad quos rex ait:The king said to them,Quid ergo vultis ut faciam vobis?“Then what do you wish that I should do for you?”
Qui dixerunt regi:And they said to the king:Virum qui attrivit nos et oppressit inique,“The man who unjustly afflictedita delere debemus, and oppressed us,ut ne unus quidem residuus sit de stirpe ejus in cunctis finibus Israël.we ought to destroy in such manner that not even one of his stock may be left behind in all the parts of Israel.
Dentur nobis septem viri de filiis ejus,Let seven men from his sons be given to us,ut crucifigamus eos Domino in Gabaa Saul,so that we may crucify them to the Lord in Gibeon of Saul, quondam electi Domini.formerly the chosen place of the Lord.”Et ait rex:And the king said,Ego dabo.“I will give them.”
Pepercitque rex Miphiboseth filio Jonathæ filii Saul,But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, propter jusjurandum Domini quod fuerat inter David et inter Jonathan filium Saul.because of the oath of the Lord which had been made between David and Jonathan, the son of Saul.
Tulit itaque rex duos filios Respha filiæ Aja quos peperit Sauli,And so the king took the two sons of Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul,Armoni, et Miphiboseth:Armoni and Mephibosheth,et quinque filios Michol filiæ Saul quos genuerat Hadrieli filio Berzellai, and the five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul, whom she conceived of Adriel, qui fuit de Molathi, the son of Barzillai, who was from Meholath,
et dedit eos in manus Gabaonitarum:and he gave them into the hands of the Gibeonites.qui crucifixerunt eos in monte coram Domino:And they crucified them on a hill in the sight of the Lord.et ceciderunt hi septem simul occisi in diebus messis primis,And these seven fell together in the first days of the harvest, incipiente messione hordei.when the barley is beginning to be reaped.
Tollens autem Respha filia Aja cilicium,Then Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, taking a haircloth, substravit sibi supra petram ab initio messis, donec stillaret aqua super eos de cælo:spread it under herself on a rock, from the beginning of the harvest until water dropped from heaven upon them.et non dimisit aves lacerare eos per diem,And she did not permit the birds to tear them by day, neque bestias per noctem.nor the beasts by night.
Et nuntiata sunt David quæ fecerat Respha filia Aja,And it was reported to David what Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah, concubina Saul.the concubine of Saul, had done.
Et abiit David,And David went and took the bones of Saul,et tulit ossa Saul, and the bones of his son Jonathan,et ossa Jonathæ filii ejus, from the men of Jabesh Gilead,a viris Jabes Galaad, who had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, qui furati fuerant ea de platea Bethsan in qua suspenderant eos Philisthiim cum interfecissent Saul in Gelboë:where the Philistines had suspended them after they had slain Saul at Gilboa.
et asportavit inde ossa Saul,And he brought the bones of Saul,et ossa Jonathæ filii ejus:and the bones of his son Jonathan, from there.et colligentes ossa eorum qui affixi fuerant,And they collected the bones of those who had been crucified.
sepelierunt ea cum ossibus SaulAnd they buried them with the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan,et Jonathæ filii ejus in terra Benjamin,in the land of Benjamin,in latere,to the side of the sepulcher of his father Kish.in sepulchro Cis patris ejus:And they did all that the king had instructed.feceruntque omnia quæ præceperat rex,And after these things,et repropitiatus est Deus terræ post hæc.God showed favor again to the land.
Factum est autem rursum prælium Philisthinorum adversum Israël,Then the Philistines again undertook a battle against Israel.et descendit David,And David descended,et servi ejus cum eo,and his servants with him,et pugnabant contra Philisthiim.and they fought against the Philistines.Deficiente autem David,But when David grew faint,
Jesbibenob,Ishbibenob, qui fuit de genere Arapha, who was of the ancestry of Arapha, cujus ferrum hastæ trecentas uncias appendebat, the iron of whose spear weighed three hundred ounces,et accinctus erat ense novo, who had been girded with a new sword, nisus est percutere David.strove to strike down David.
Præsidioque ei fuit Abisai filius Sarviæ,And Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, defended him,et percussum Philisthæum interfecit.and striking the Philistine, he killed him.Tunc juraverunt viri David, dicentes:Then David’s men swore an oath to him, saying,Jam non egredieris nobiscum in bellum,“You shall no longer go out to war with us,ne extinguas lucernam Israël.lest you extinguish the lamp of Israel.”
Secundum quoque bellum fuit in Gob contra Philisthæos:Also, a second war occurred in Gob against the Philistines.tunc percussit Sobochai de Husati,Then Sibbecai from Hushah struck down Saph,Saph de stirpe Arapha de genere gigantum.from the stock of Arapha, of the ancestry of the giants.
Tertium quoque fuit bellum in Gob contra Philisthæos,Then there was a third war in Gob against the Philistines, in which Adeodatus,in quo percussit Adeodatus filius Saltus polymitarius Bethlehemites Goliath Gethæum,a son of the forest, a weaver from Bethlehem, struck down Goliath the Gittite, cujus hastile hastæ erat quasi liciatorium texentium.the shaft of whose spear was like the beam used by a cloth maker.
Quartum bellum fuit in Geth:A fourth battle was in Gath.in quo vir fuit excelsus,In that place, there was a lofty man,qui senos in manibus pedibusque habebat digitos, who had six digits on each hand and each foot,id est, that is,viginti quatuor:twenty-four in all,et erat de origine Arapha.and he was from the origins of Arapha.
Et blasphemavit Israël:And he blasphemed Israel. So Jonathan, percussit autem eum Jonathan filius Samaa fratris David.the son of Shimei, the brother of David, struck him down.
Hi quatuor nati sunt de Arapha in Geth,These four men were born of Arapha in Gath,et ceciderunt in manu David et servorum ejus.and they fell by the hand of David and his servants.
