Et venerunt universæ tribus Israël ad David in Hebron,And all the tribes of Israel went to David in Hebron, dicentes:saying:Ecce nos os tuum“Behold,et caro tua sumus.we are your bone and your flesh.
Sed et heri et nudiustertius cum esset Saul rex super nos,Moreover, yesterday and the day before, when Saul was king over us,tu eras educens et reducens Israël: dixit autem Dominus ad te:you were the one leading out and leading back Israel. Then the Lord said to you,Tu pasces populum meum Israël,‘You shall pasture my people Israel,et tu eris dux super Israël.and you shall be the leader over Israel.’”
Venerunt quoqueAlso,et seniores Israël ad regem in Hebron, the elders of Israel went to the king at Hebron,et percussit cum eis rex David fœdus in Hebron coram Domino:and king David struck a pact with them at Hebron in the sight of the Lord.unxeruntque David in regem super Israël.And they anointed David as king over Israel.
Filius triginta annorum erat David cum regnare cœpisset,David was a son of thirty years, when he had begun to reign,et quadraginta annis regnavit.and he reigned for forty years.
In Hebron regnavit super Judam septem annisIn Hebron,et sex mensibus:he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months.in Jerusalem autem regnavit triginta tribus annis super omnem IsraëlThen in Jerusalem,et Judam.he reigned for thirty-three years over all of Israel and Judah.
Et abiit rex,And the king,et omnes viri qui erant cum eo, in Jerusalem, and all the men who were with him, went away to Jerusalem,ad Jebusæum habitatorem terræ:to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land.dictumque est David ab eis:And it was said to David by them,Non ingredieris huc,“You shall not enter here, nisi abstuleris cæcos et claudos dicentes:unless you will take away the blind and the lame, who say,Non ingredietur David huc.‘David shall not enter here.’”
Cepit autem David arcem Sion:But David seized the stronghold of Zion;hæc est civitas David.the same is the city of David.
Proposuerat enim David in die illa præmium,For David had proposed, on that day,qui percussisset Jebusæum, et tetigisset domatum fistulas,a reward to him who had struck the Jebusites and who had reached to the gutters of the rooftops,et abstulisset cæcos et claudos odientes animam David.and who had taken away the blind and the lame that hated the soul of David.Idcirco dicitur in proverbio:Therefore, it is said in the proverb,Cæcus et claudus non intrabunt in templum.“The blind and the lame shall not enter into the temple.”
Habitavit autem David in arce,Then David lived in the stronghold,et vocavit eam civitatem David:and he called it: the City of David.et ædificavit per gyrum a Mello et intrinsecus. And he built it up on all sides, from Millo and inward.
Et ingrediebatur proficiens atque succrescens,And he advanced, prospering and increasing,et Dominus Deus exercituum erat cum eo.and the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.
Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri nuntios ad David,Also, Hiram, the king of Tyre,et ligna cedrina, sent messengers to David,et artifices lignorum, artificesque lapidum ad parietes:with cedar wood, and with builders of wood and builders of stone,et ædificaverunt domum David.in order to make walls. And they built a house for David.
Et cognovit David quoniam confirmasset eum Dominus regem super Israël,And David knew that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel,et quoniam exaltasset regnum ejus super populum suum Israël.and that he had exalted his kingdom over his people Israel.
Accepit ergo David adhuc concubinas et uxores de Jerusalem,Then David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, postquam venerat de Hebron:after he had arrived from Hebron.natique sunt David et alii filii et filiæ:And other sons as well as daughters were born to David.
et hæc nomina eorum, qui nati sunt ei in Jerusalem:And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem:Samua,Shammua,et Sobab, and Shobab,et Nathan, and Nathan,et Salomon, and Solomon,
et Jebahar,and Ibhar,et Elisua,and Elishua,et Nepheg,and Nepheg,
et Japhia,and Japhia,et Elisama,and Elishama,et Elioda,and Eliada,et Eliphaleth.and Elipheleth.
Audierunt ergo Philisthiim quod unxissent David in regem super Israël,Then the Philistines heard that they had anointed David as king over Israel.et ascenderunt universi ut quærerent David:And they all ascended, so that they might seek David.quod cum audisset David,And when David had heard of it,descendit in præsidium.he descended to a stronghold.
Philisthiim autem venientes diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim. Now the Philistines, arriving, spread themselves out in the Valley of Rephaim.
Et consuluit David Dominum,And David consulted the Lord, dicens:saying:Si ascendam ad Philisthiim?“Shall I ascend to the Philistines?et si dabis eos in manu mea?And will you give them into my hand?”Et dixit Dominus ad David:And the Lord said to David:Ascende,“Ascend.quia tradens dabo Philisthiim in manu tua.For I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”
Venit ergo David in Baal Pharasim:Therefore, David went to Baal-perazim.et percussit eos ibi,And he struck them there.et dixit:And he said,Divisit Dominus inimicos meos coram me,“The Lord has divided my enemies before me,sicut dividuntur aquæ.just as the waters are divided.”Propterea vocatum est nomen loci illius, Baal Pharasim.Because of this, the name of that place was called Baal-perazim.
Et reliquerunt ibi sculptilia sua,And in that place they left behind their graven images,quæ tulit David et viri ejus.which David and his men took away.
Et addiderunt adhuc Philisthiim ut ascenderent,And the Philistines continued still,et diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.so that they ascended and spread themselves out in the Valley of Rephaim.
Consuluit autem David Dominum:Then David consulted the Lord,Si ascendam contra Philisthæos,“Shall I ascend against the Philistines,et tradas eos in manus meas?and will you deliver them into my hands?”Qui respondit:And he responded:Non ascendas contra eos,“You shall not ascend against them;sed gyra post tergum eorum, instead, circle behind their back.et venies ad eos ex adverso pyrorum. And you shall come to them from the side opposite the balsam trees.
Et cum audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum,And when you hear the sound of something going forth from the tops of the balsam trees, tunc inibis prælium:then you shall begin the battle.quia tunc egredietur Dominus ante faciem tuam,For then the Lord will go forth, before your face,ut percutiat castra Philisthiim.so that he may strike the army of the Philistines.”
Fecit itaque David sicut præceperat ei Dominus,And so, David did just as the Lord had instructed him.et percussit Philisthiim de Gabaa usque dum venias Gezer. And he struck down the Philistines, from Gibeon until you arrive at Gezer.
