Audivit autem Isboseth filius Saul quod cecidisset Abner in Hebron:Then Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, heard that Abner had fallen in Hebron.et dissolutæ sunt manus ejus,And his hands were weakened, omnisque Israël perturbatus est.and all of Israel was troubled.
Duo autem viri principes latronum erant filio Saul,Now the son of Saul had two men, leaders among robbers. The name of the one was Baanah, nomen uni Baana, et nomen alteri Rechab, and the name of the other was Rechab, sons of Rimmon, filii Remmon Berothitæ de filiis Benjamin:a Beerothite from the sons of Benjamin. For indeed, siquidem et Beroth reputata est in Benjamin.Beeroth, too, was reputed with Benjamin.
Et fugerunt Berothitæ in Gethaim,And the Beerothites had fled into Gittaim.fueruntque ibi advenæ usque ad tempus illud. And they were strangers there, until that time.
Erat autem Jonathæ filio Saul filius debilis pedibus:Now Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son with disabled feet.quinquennis enim fuit, quando venit nuntius de Saul et Jonatha ex Jezrahel. For he was five years old when the report about Saul and Jonathan arrived from Jezreel.Tollens itaque eum nutrix sua,And so, his nurse, taking him up,fugit:fled.cumque festinaret ut fugeret, cecidit,And while she was hurrying, so that she might flee,et claudus effectus est:he fell and was made lame.habuitque vocabulum Miphiboseth. And he was called Mephibosheth.
Venientes igitur filii Remmon Berothitæ,And so, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite,Rechab et Baana,Rechab and Baanah, ingressi sunt fervente die domum Isboseth:arrived and entered the house of Ishbosheth, qui dormiebat super stratum suum meridie.in the heat of the day. And he was sleeping on his bed at midday.Et ostiaria domus purgans triticum,And the doorkeeper of the house, who was cleaning the wheat, obdormivit.fell fast asleep.
Ingressi sunt autem domum latenter assumentes spicas tritici,Then they entered the house secretly,et percusserunt eum in inguine Rechab, taking the ears of grain.et Baana frater ejus,And Rechab and his brother Baanah stabbed him in the groin,et fugerunt.and they fled away.
Cum autem ingressi fuissent domum,For when they had entered the house, ille dormiebat super lectum suum in conclavi,he was sleeping on his bed in a closed room. And striking him,et percutientes interfecerunt eum:they killed him. And taking his head, sublatoque capite ejus, abierunt per viam deserti tota nocte, they departed by the way of the desert, walking throughout the night.
et attulerunt caput Isboseth ad David in Hebron:And they brought the head of Ishbosheth to David in Hebron.dixeruntque ad regem:And they said to the king:Ecce caput Isboseth filii Saul inimici tui,“Behold, the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, qui quærebat animam tuam:your enemy, who was seeking your life.et dedit Dominus domino meo regi ultionem hodie de Saul,And so, the Lord has avenged my lord the king, this day,et de semine ejus.from Saul and from his offspring.”
Respondens autem David Rechab,But David,et Baana fratri ejus, responding to Rechabfiliis Remmon Berothitæ,and his brother Baanah, dixit ad eos:the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite,Vivit Dominus, said to them:qui eruit animam meam de omni angustia,“As the Lord lives who has rescued my soul from all distress,
quoniam eum qui annuntiaverat mihi, the one who reported to me and said,et dixerat:‘Saul is dead,’Mortuus est Saul: qui putabat se prospera nuntiare, who was thinking that he announced good news, I apprehended.tenui, et occidi eum in Siceleg, cui oportebat mercedem dare pro nuntio. And at Ziklag I killed him who ought to have been given a reward for the news.
Quanto magis nunc cum homines impii interfecerunt virum innoxium in domo sua,How much more so now, when impious men have put to death an innocent man in his own house, super lectum suum, upon his bed,non quæram sanguinem ejus de manu vestra, shall I not require his blood from your hand,et auferam vos de terra?and take you away from the earth?”
Præcepit itaque David pueris suis,And so,et interfecerunt eos:David commanded his servants,præcidentesque manus et pedes eorum, and they put them to death.suspenderunt eos super piscinam in Hebron:And cutting off their hands and feet, caput autem Isboseth tulerunt, they suspended them up over the pool in Hebron.et sepelierunt in sepulchro Abner in Hebron. But the head of Ishbosheth they took and buried in the sepulcher of Abner at Hebron.
