Et rex David senuerat,Now king David had become elderly, habebatque ætatis plurimos dies:and he had many days in his lifetime.cumque operiretur vestibus,And though he was covered with clothes, non calefiebat.he was not warmed.

Dixerunt ergo ei servi sui:Therefore, his servants said to him:Quæramus domino nostro regi adolescentulam virginem,“Let us seek, for our lord the king, a young virgin.et stet coram rege, et foveat eum,And let her stand before the king, and warm him, dormiatque in sinu suo,and sleep in his bosom,et calefaciat dominum nostrum regem.and provide warmth for our lord the king.”

Quæsierunt igitur adolescentulam speciosam in omnibus finibus Israël,And so they sought a beautiful young woman in all the parts of Israel.et invenerunt Abisag Sunamitidem,And they found Abishag, a Shunammite,et adduxerunt eam ad regem.and they led her to the king.

Erat autem puella pulchra nimis,Now the girl was exceedingly beautiful.dormiebatque cum rege,And she slept with the king,et ministrabat ei:and she ministered to him.rex vero non cognovit eam.Yet truly, the king did not know her.

Adonias autem filius Haggith elevabatur,Then Adonijah, the son of Haggith, exalted himself, dicens:saying,Ego regnabo.“I shall reign!”Fecitque sibi currus et equites, et quinquaginta viros qui currerent ante eum.And he appointed for himself chariots and horsemen, with fifty men who would run before him.

Nec corripuit eum pater suus aliquando,Neither did his father chastise him at any time, dicens:saying,Quare hoc fecisti?“Why have you done this?”Erat autem et ipse pulcher valde,Now he, too, was very beautiful, secundus natu post Absalom.the second in birth, after Absalom.

Et sermo ei cum Joab filio Sarviæ,And he conferred with Joab, the son of Zeruiah,et cum Abiathar sacerdote, and with Abiathar, the priest, qui adjuvabant partes Adoniæ.who gave assistance to the side of Adonijah.

Sadoc vero sacerdos,Yet truly, Zadok, the priest,et Banaias filius Jojadæ,and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada,et Nathan propheta, and Nathan, the prophet,et Semei et Rei,and Shimei and Rei,et robur exercitus David, non erat cum Adonia.and the mature men of the army of David were not with Adonijah.

Immolatis ergo Adonias arietibusThen Adonijah,et vitulis, having immolated rams and calves and every kind of fat cattle beside the Stone of the Serpent,et universis pinguibus, which was in the vicinity of the fountain Rogel, juxta lapidem Zoheleth, summoned all his brothers, qui erat vicinus fonti Rogel, the sons of the king, vocavit universos fratres suos filios regis, and all the men of Judah,et omnes viros Juda servos regis.the servants of the king.

Nathan autem prophetam,But he did not summon Nathan,et Banaiam, the prophet,et robustos quosque, and Benaiah,et Salomonem fratrem suum non vocavit.and all the mature men, and Solomon, his brother.

Dixit itaque Nathan ad Bethsabee matrem Salomonis:And so Nathan said to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon:Num audisti quod regnaverit Adonias filius Haggith,“Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has begun to reign,et dominus noster David hoc ignorat?and that our lord David is ignorant of this?

Nunc ergo veni,Now then, accipe consilium a me,come,et salva animam tuam, accept my counsel, filiique tui Salomonis.and save your life and the life of your son Solomon.

Vade,Go and enter to king David,et ingredere ad regem David, and say to him:et dic ei:‘Did you not,Nonne tu,my lord the king, domine mi rex, swear to me,jurasti mihi ancillæ tuæ,your handmaid, dicens:saying:Salomon filius tuus regnabit post me,“Your son Solomon shall reign after me,et ipse sedebit in solio meo?and he himself shall sit on my throne?”quare ergo regnat Adonias? Then why does Adonijah reign?’

Et adhuc ibi te loquente cum rege,And while you are still speaking with the king there, ego veniam post te,I will enter after you,et complebo sermones tuos.and I will complete your words.”

Ingressa est itaque Bethsabee ad regem in cubiculum:And so Bathsheba entered to the king in the bedroom.rex autem senuerat nimis,Now the king was very old, and Abishag,et Abisag Sunamitis ministrabat ei.the Shunammite, was ministering to him.

Inclinavit se Bethsabee, et adoravit regem.Bathsheba bowed herself, and she reverenced the king.Ad quam rex: Quid tibi,And the king said to her, inquit, vis?“What do you wish?”

Quæ respondens,And responding, ait: Domine mi,she said: “My lord,tu jurasti per Dominum Deum tuum ancillæ tuæ:you swore to your handmaid, by the Lord your God:Salomon filius tuus regnabit post me,‘your son Solomon will reign after me,et ipse sedebit in solio meo.and he himself shall sit upon my throne.’

Et ecce nunc Adonias regnat,And now behold, Adonijah reigns,te, domine mi rex, while you, my lord the king, ignorante.are ignorant of it.

Mactavit boves,He has slain oxen,et pinguia quæque, et arietes plurimos, and every kind of fattened cattle, and many rams.et vocavit omnes filios regis,And he has summoned all the sons of the king,Abiathar quoque sacerdotem,as well as Abiathar, the priest,et Joab principem militiæ:and Joab, the leader of the military.Salomonem autem servum tuum non vocavit. But Solomon, your servant, he did not summon.

Verumtamen,Truly now, domine mi rex,my lord the king,in te oculi respiciunt totius Israël,the eyes of all of Israel look with favor upon you,ut indices eis quis sedere debeat in solio tuo, that you may indicate to them who ought to sit upon your throne, domine mi rex,my lord the king, post te.after you.

Eritque,Otherwise, cum dormierit dominus meus rex cum patribus suis, this will be:erimus egowhen my lord the king sleeps with his fathers,et filius meus Salomon peccatores.I and my son Solomon will be as sinners.”

Adhuc illa loquente cum rege,And while she was still speaking with the king,Nathan propheta venit.Nathan, the prophet, arrived.

Et nuntiaverunt regi, dicentes:And they announced to the king, saying,Adest Nathan propheta.“Nathan, the prophet, is here.”Cumque introisset in conspectu regis,And when he had entered in the sight of the king,et adorasset eum pronus in terram, and he had reverenced prone on the ground,

dixit Nathan:Nathan said:Domine mi rex,“My lord the king,tu dixisti:did you say,Adonias regnet post me,‘Let Adonijah reign after me,et ipse sedeat super thronum meum?and let him sit upon my throne?’

Quia descendit hodie,For today, he descended,et immolavit boves, and he immolated oxen,et pinguia, et arietes plurimos, and fattened cattle, and many rams.et vocavit universos filios regis et principes exercitus,And he summoned all the sons of the king, and the leaders of the army,Abiathar quoque sacerdotem, along with Abiathar, the priest.illisque vescentibus et bibentibus coram eo,And they are eating and drinking before him,et dicentibus: Vivat rex Adonias:and saying, ‘As king Adonijah lives.’

me servum tuum, et Sadoc sacerdotem,But he did not summon me, your servant,et Banaiam filium Jojadæ,and Zadok, the priest, and Benaiah,et Salomonem famulum tuum non vocavit.the son of Jehoiada, and Solomon, your lowly servant.

Numquid a domino meo rege exivit hoc verbum,Could this word have gone out from my lord the king,et mihi non indicasti servo tuo quis sessurus esset super thronum domini mei regis post eum?and could you not have revealed it to me, your servant, as to who would be seated upon the throne of my lord the king after him?”

Et respondit rex David,And king David responded, dicens:saying,Vocate ad me Bethsabee.“Summon to me Bathsheba.”Quæ cum fuisset ingressa coram rege,And when she had entered before the king,et stetisset ante eum,and she had stood before him,

juravit rex,the king sworeet ait:and said:Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives, qui eruit animam meam de omni angustia, who has rescued my soul from all distress,

quia sicut juravi tibi per Dominum Deum Israël,just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, dicens:saying:Salomon filius tuus regnabit post me,‘Your son Solomon shall reign after me,et ipse sedebit super solium meum pro me:and he himself shall sit upon my throne in my place,’sic faciam hodie.so shall I do this day.”

Summissoque Bethsabee in terram vultu,And Bathsheba, having lowered her face to the ground, adoravit regem, reverenced the king, dicens:saying,Vivat dominus meus David in æternum.“May my lord David live forever.”

Dixit quoque rex David:And king David said,Vocate mihi Sadoc sacerdotem,“Summon to me Zadok, the priest,et Nathan prophetam, and Nathan, the prophet,et Banaiam filium Jojadæ.and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada.”Qui cum ingressi fuissent coram rege,And when they had entered before the king,

dixit ad eos:he said to them:Tollite vobiscum servos domini vestri,“Take with you the servants of your lord,et imponite Salomonem filium meum super mulam meam, and place my son Solomon upon my mule.et ducite eum in Gihon. And lead him to Gihon.

Et ungat eum ibi Sadoc sacerdos et Nathan propheta in regem super Israël: et canetis buccina, atque dicetis: Vivat rex Salomon. And let Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, anoint him in that place as the king over Israel. And you shall sound the trumpet, and you shall say, ‘As king Solomon lives.’

Et ascendetis post eum,And you shall ascend after him,et veniet, et sedebit super solium meum, and he shall arrive and shall sit upon my throne.et ipse regnabit pro me:And he himself shall reign in my place.illique præcipiam ut sit dux super Israël et super Judam. And I will command that he be the ruler over Israel and over Judah.”

Et respondit Banaias filius Jojadæ regi,And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, responded to the king, dicens:saying:Amen:“Amen.sic loquatur Dominus Deus domini mei regis. So says the Lord, the God of my lord the king.

Quomodo fuit Dominus cum domino meo rege,In the same way that the Lord has been with my lord the king, sic sit cum Salomone,so may he be with Solomon.et sublimius faciat solium ejus a solio domini mei regis David. And may he make his throne more sublime than the throne of my lord, king David.”

Descendit ergo Sadoc sacerdos,Then Zadok, the priest, and Nathan,et Nathan propheta, the prophet, descended,et Banaias filius Jojadæ,with Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada,et Cerethi, et Phelethi:and the Cherethites and Pelethites.et imposuerunt Salomonem super mulam regis David,And they placed Solomon on the mule of king David,et adduxerunt eum in Gihon.and they led him to Gihon.

Sumpsitque Sadoc sacerdos cornu olei de tabernaculo,And Zadok, the priest, took the horn of oil from the tabernacle,et unxit Salomonem:and he anointed Solomon.et cecinerunt buccina,And they sounded the trumpet.et dixit omnis populus:And all the people said,Vivat rex Salomon.“As king Solomon lives.”

Et ascendit universa multitudo post eum,And the entire multitude ascended after him.et populus canentium tibiis,And the people were playing on pipes,et lætantium gaudio magno:and rejoicing with great joy.et insonuit terra a clamore eorum. And the earth resounded before the noise of them.

Audivit autem Adonias,Then Adonijah,et omnes qui invitati fuerant ab eo:and all who had been summoned by him, heard it.jamque convivium finitum erat:And now the feast had ended. Then, too,sed et Joab, audita voce tubæ,Joab, hearing the voice of the trumpet, ait:said,Quid sibi vult clamor civitatis tumultuantis?“What is the meaning of this clamor from the tumultuous city?”

Adhuc illo loquente,While he was still speaking,Jonathas filius Abiathar sacerdotis venit:Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest, arrived.cui dixit Adonias: Ingredere,And Adonijah said to him, “Enter, quia vir fortis es,for you are a valiant man,et bona nuntians.and you report good news.”

Responditque Jonathas Adoniæ:And Jonathan answered Adonijah:Nequaquam:“By no means.dominus enim noster rex David regem constituit Salomonem:For our lord king David has appointed Solomon as king.

misitque cum eo Sadoc sacerdotem,And he has sent with him Zadok, the priest,et Nathan prophetam, and Nathan, the prophet,et Banaiam filium Jojadæ,and Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada,et Cerethi, et Phelethi, and the Cherethites and Pelethites.et imposuerunt eum super mulam regis. And they have placed him on the mule of the king.

Unxeruntque eum Sadoc sacerdos et Nathan propheta regem in Gihon: et ascenderunt inde lætantes, et insonuit civitas: hæc est vox quam audistis. And Zadok, the priest, and Nathan, the prophet, have anointed him king, at Gihon. And they are ascending from there, rejoicing, and so the city resounds. This is the noise that you have heard.

SedBut also,et Salomon sedet super solium regni.Solomon sits upon the throne of the kingdom.

Et ingressi servi regis benedixerunt domino nostro regi David,And the servants of the king, entering, have blessed our lord king David, dicentes:saying:Amplificet Deus nomen Salomonis super nomen tuum,‘May God amplify the name of Solomon above your name,et magnificet thronus ejus super thronum tuum.and may he magnify his throne above your throne.’Et adoravit rex in lectulo suo:And the king reverenced from his bed.

et locutus est:And he said:Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël,‘Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, qui dedit hodie sedentem in solio meo,who today has bestowed someone to sit upon my throne, videntibus oculis meis.while my eyes may see it.’”

Territi sunt ergo, et surrexerunt omnes qui invitati fuerant ab Adonia,Therefore, all those who had been summoned by Adonijah were terrified.et ivit unusquisque in viam suam. And they all rose up, and each one went his own way.

Adonias autem timens Salomonem,Then Adonijah, surrexit, fearing Solomon,et abiit, rose up and went away.tenuitque cornu altaris. And he took hold of the horn of the altar.

Et nuntiaverunt Salomoni,And they reported to Solomon, saying:dicentes:“Behold, Adonijah,Ecce Adonias timens regem Salomonem, tenuit cornu altaris, fearing king Solomon, has taken hold of the horn of the altar, dicens:saying:Juret mihi rex Salomon hodie, quod non interficiat servum suum gladio.‘May king Solomon swear to me this day that he will not put to death his servant with the sword.’”

Dixitque Salomon:And Solomon said:Si fuerit vir bonus,“If he is a good man,non cadet ne unus quidem capillus ejus in terram:not so much as one hair of his head shall fall to the ground.sin autem malum inventum fuerit in eo,But if evil is found in him, morietur.he shall die.”

Misit ergo rex Salomon, et eduxit eum ab altari:Therefore, king Solomon sent and brought him from the altar.et ingressus adoravit regem Salomonem:And entering, he reverenced king Solomon.dixitque ei Salomon:And Solomon said to him,Vade in domum tuam.“Go to your own house.”
