Appropinquaverunt autem dies David ut moreretur:Now the days of David had drawn near, so that he would die,præcepitque Salomoni filio suo,and he instructed his son Solomon, dicens:saying:
Ego ingredior viam universæ terræ:“I am entering the way of all the earth.confortare,Be strengthenedet esto vir.and be a good man.
Et observa custodias Domini Dei tui,And observe the care of the Lord your God,ut ambules in viis ejus:so that you walk in his ways,ut custodias cæremonias ejus,so that you care for his ceremonies,et præcepta ejus, and his precepts,et judicia, and judgments,et testimonia, and testimonies, sicut scriptum est in lege Moysi:just as it is written in the law of Moses.ut intelligas universa quæ facis,So may you understand everything that you do,et quocumque te verteris:in any direction that you may turn yourself.
ut confirmet Dominus sermones suos quos locutus est de me,So may the Lord confirm his words, dicens:which he has spoken about me,Si custodierint filii tui vias suas, saying:et ambulaverint coram me in veritate,‘If your sons will guard their ways,in omni corde suoand if they will walk before me in truth,et in omni anima sua, with all their heart and with all their soul, non auferetur tibi vir de solio Israël.there shall not be taken away from you a man on the throne of Israel.’
Tu quoque nosti quæ fecerit mihi Joab filius Sarviæ,Also, you know what Joab, the son of Zeruiah,quæ fecerit duobus principibus exercitus Israël,has done to me, what he did to the two leaders of the army of Israel,Abner filio Ner,to Abner, the son of Ner,et Amasæ filio Jether:and to Amasa, the son of Jether.quos occidit,He killed them,et effudit sanguinem belli in pace, and so he shed the blood of war in peace time,et posuit cruorem prælii in balteo suo qui erat circa lumbos ejus, and he set the bloodshed of battle on his belt, which was around his waist,et in calceamento suo quod erat in pedibus ejus.and in his shoes, which were on his feet.
Facies ergo juxta sapientiam tuam,Therefore, act according to your wisdom.et non deduces canitiem ejus pacifice ad inferos. And you shall not allow his gray head to be led away to death in peace.
Sed et filiis Berzellai Galaaditis reddes gratiam,Then, too, repay grace to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite.eruntque comedentes in mensa tua:And you shall allow them to eat at your table.occurrerunt enim mihi quando fugiebam a facie Absalom fratris tui.For they met me when I fled from the face of Absalom, your brother.
Habes quoque apud te Semei filium Gera filii Jemini de Bahurim,Also, you have with you Shimei, the son of Gera, qui maledixit mihi maledictione pessima quando ibam ad castra:the son of Benjamin, from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse, sed quia descendit mihi in occursum cum transirem Jordanem, when I went away to the camp. And he descended to meet me when I crossed over the Jordan,et juravi ei per Dominum, and I swore to him by the Lord, dicens:saying,Non te interficiam gladio:‘I will not put you to death by the sword,’
tu noli pati eum esse innoxium.yet do not choose to treat him as if he were innocent.Vir autem sapiens es,Since you are a wise man,ut scias quæ facies ei:you will know what to do with him.deducesque canos ejus cum sanguine ad inferos. And you shall lead away his grey hair to death with blood.”
Dormivit igitur David cum patribus suis,And so, David slept with his fathers,et sepultus est in civitate David.and he was buried in the city of David.
Dies autem quibus regnavit David super Israël, quadraginta anni sunt:Now the days during which David reigned over Israel are forty years:in Hebron regnavit septem annis;he reigned seven years in Hebron,in Jerusalem, triginta tribus.thirty-three in Jerusalem.
Salomon autem sedit super thronum David patris sui,Then Solomon sat upon the throne of his father David,et firmatum est regnum ejus nimis.and his kingdom was strengthened exceedingly.
Et ingressus est Adonias filius Haggith ad Bethsabee matrem Salomonis. And Adonijah, the son of Haggith, entered to Bathsheba,Quæ dixit ei:the mother of Solomon.Pacificusne est ingressus tuus? And she said to him, “Is your entrance peaceful?”Qui respondit: Pacificus. He responded, “It is peaceful.”
Addiditque:And he added,Sermo mihi est ad te.“My word is for you.”Cui ait:She said to him,Loquere.“Speak.”Et ille:And he said:
Tu, inquit, nosti,“You know that the kingdom was mine, quia meum erat regnum, et me præposuerat omnis Israël sibi in regem:and that all of Israel had preferred me for themselves as king.sed translatum est regnum,But the kingdom was transferred,et factum est fratris mei:and has become my brother’s.a Domino enim constitutum est ei.For it was appointed to him by the Lord.
Nunc ergo petitionem unam precor a te:Now therefore, I beg of you one petition.ne confundas faciem meam.May you not confound my face.”Quæ dixit ad eum:And she said to him,Loquere.“Speak.”
Et ille ait:And he said:Precor ut dicas Salomoni regi (neque enim negare tibi quidquam potest) ut det mihi Abisag Sunamitidem uxorem.“I beg that you may speak to king Solomon, for he is not able to refuse anything to you, so that he may give Abishag the Shunammite to me as wife.”
Et ait Bethsabee:And Bathsheba said:Bene:“It is well.ego loquar pro te regi.I will speak to the king on your behalf.”
Venit ergo Bethsabee ad regem Salomonem ut loqueretur ei pro Adonia:Then Bathsheba went to king Solomon, so that she might speak to him on behalf of Adonijah.et surrexit rex in occursum ejus,And the king rose up to meet her, adoravitque eam,and he reverenced her,et sedit super thronum suum:and he sat down upon his throne.positusque est thronus matri regis,And a throne was stationed for the mother of the king,quæ sedit ad dexteram ejus.and she sat at his right hand.
Dixitque ei:And she said to him:Petitionem unam parvulam ego deprecor a te:“I petition one small request from you.ne confundas faciem meam.May you not confound my face.”Et dixit ei rex:And the king said to her:Pete,“Ask,mater mea:my mother.neque enim fas est ut avertam faciem tuam. For it is not right that I turn away your face.”
Quæ ait:And she said,Detur Abisag Sunamitis Adoniæ fratri tuo uxor.“Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah, your brother, as wife.”
Responditque rex Salomon,And king Solomon responded,et dixit matri suæ:and he said to his mother:Quare postulas Abisag Sunamitidem Adoniæ?“Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?postula ei et regnum: ipse est enim frater meus major me,Why not request the kingdom for him! For he is my older brother,et habet Abiathar sacerdotem, and he has Abiathar, the priest,et Joab filium Sarviæ.and Joab, the son of Zeruiah.”
Juravit itaque rex Salomon per Dominum,And so king Solomon swore by the Lord, dicens:saying:Hæc faciat mihi Deus,“May God do these things to me,et hæc addat, and may he add these other things!quia contra animam suam locutus est Adonias verbum hoc.For Adonijah has spoken this word against his own life.
Et nunc vivit Dominus,And now, as the Lord lives, qui firmavit me, et collocavit me super solium David patris mei,who has confirmed me and placed me upon the throne of my father David,et qui fecit mihi domum, and who, just as he said, sicut locutus est,has made a house for me:quia hodie occidetur Adonias.Adonijah shall be put to death this day.”
Misitque rex Salomon per manum Banaiæ filii Jojadæ,And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, qui interfecit eum,who put him to death,et mortuus est.and so he died.
Abiathar quoque sacerdoti dixit rex:Also, the king said to Abiathar, the priest:Vade in Anathoth ad agrum tuum:“Go into Anathoth, to your own land, equidem vir mortis es:for you are a man worthy of death.sed hodie te non interficiam,But I will not put you to death this day, quia portasti arcam Domini Dei coram David patre meo, since you carried the ark of the Lord God before David, my father,et sustinuisti laborem in omnibus in quibus laboravit pater meus.and since you have endured hardship in all the things, for which my father labored.”
Ejecit ergo Salomon Abiathar ut non esset sacerdos Domini,Therefore, Solomon cast out Abiathar, so that he would not be the priest of the Lord,ut impleretur sermo Domini quem locutus est super domum Heli in Silo.so that the word of the Lord might be fulfilled, which he spoke over the house of Eli at Shiloh.
Venit autem nuntius ad Joab,And the news came to Joab, quod Joab declinasset post Adoniam, for Joab had turned aside after Adonijah,et post Salomonem non declinasset:and he had not turned aside after Solomon.fugit ergo Joab in tabernaculum Domini,And so, Joab fled into the tabernacle of the Lord,et apprehendit cornu altaris.and he took hold of the horn of the altar.
Nuntiatumque est regi Salomoni quod fugisset Joab in tabernaculum Domini,And it was reported to king Solomon that Joab had fled into the tabernacle of the Lord,et esset juxta altare:and that he was beside the altar.misitque Salomon Banaiam filium Jojadæ,And Solomon sent Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, dicens:saying,Vade, interfice eum.“Go, put him to death.”
Et venit Banaias ad tabernaculum Domini,And Benaiah went to the tabernacle of the Lord,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Hæc dicit rex:“The king says this:Egredere.‘Come out.’”Qui ait:But he said:Non egrediar, sed hic moriar.“I will not come out. Instead,Renuntiavit Banaias regi sermonem, dicens:I will die here.” Benaiah sent word back to the king,Hæc locutus est Joab, saying, “Joab said this,et hæc respondit mihi.and he responded to me in this way.”
Dixitque ei rex:And the king said to him,Fac sicut locutus est,“Do just as he has said.et interfice eum,And put him to death,et sepeli:and bury him.et amovebis sanguinem innocentem qui effusus est a Joab,And so shall you take away the innocent blood,a me,which was shed by Joab,et a domo patris mei.from me and from my father’s house.
Et reddet Dominus sanguinem ejus super caput ejus,And the Lord shall repay his blood upon his own head.quia interfecit duos viros justos,For he killed two men, just and better than himself, melioresque se: et occidit eos gladio, and he killed them with the sword, while my father, patre meo David ignorante,David, did not know it: Abner,Abner filium Ner principem militiæ Israël,the son of Ner, leader of the military of Israel,et Amasam filium Jether principem exercitus Juda:and Amasa, the son of Jether, leader of the army of Judah.
et revertetur sanguis illorum in caput Joab,And their blood shall be turned back upon the head of Joab,et in caput seminis ejus in sempiternum.and upon the head of his offspring forever.David autemBut as for David,et semini ejus, and his offspring and house,et domui, and his throne,et throno illius, may there be peace from the Lord, sit pax usque in æternum a Domino.even unto eternity.”
Ascendit itaque Banaias filius Jojadæ,And so Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, went up and,et aggressus eum interfecit:attacking him, put him to death.sepultusque est in domo sua in deserto. And he was buried in his own house in the desert.
Et constituit rex Banaiam filium Jojadæ pro eo super exercitum,And the king appointed Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, in his place over the army.et Sadoc sacerdotem posuit pro Abiathar. And he appointed Zadok, the priest, in place of Abiathar.
Misit quoque rex,Also,et vocavit Semei:the king sent for and summoned Shimei, dixitque ei:and he said to him:Ædifica tibi domum in Jerusalem,“Build a house for yourself in Jerusalem,et habita ibi:and live there.et non egredieris inde huc atque illuc. And do not depart from that place to here or to there.
Quacumque autem die egressus fueris,For on whatever day you will have departedet transieris torrentem Cedron, and crossed the torrent Kidron, scito te interficiendum:know that you shall be put to death.sanguis tuus erit super caput tuum.Your blood will be upon your own head.”
Dixitque Semei regi:And Shimei said to the king:Bonus sermo:“The word is good.sicut locutus est dominus meus rex,Just as my lord the king has said, sic faciet servus tuus.so will your servant do.”Habitavit itaque Semei in Jerusalem diebus multis. And so Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.
Factum est autem post annos tres ut fugerent servi Semei ad Achis filium Maacha regem Geth: nuntiatumque est Semei quod servi ejus issent in Geth. But it happened that, after three years, the servants of Shimei fled to Achish, the son of Maacah, the king of Gath. And it was reported to Shimei that his servants had gone away to Gath.
Et surrexit Semei,And Shimei rose up,et stravit asinum suum, and he saddled his donkey.ivitque ad Achis in Geth ad requirendum servos suos,And went away to Achish in Gath, in order to seek his servants.et adduxit eos de Geth. And he led them away from Gath.
Nuntiatum est autem Salomoni quod isset Semei in Geth de Jerusalem,And it was reported to Solomon that Shimei had gone away from Jerusalem to Gath,et rediisset.and had returned.
Et mittens vocavit eum,And sending, he summoned him, dixitque illi:and he said to him:Nonne testificatus sum tibi per Dominum,“Did I not testify to you by the Lord, and warn you in advance,et prædixi tibi:‘On whatever day,Quacumque die egressus ieris huc et illuc, having departed, you go forth to here or to there, scito te esse moriturum:know that you shall die?’et respondisti mihi:And you responded to me,Bonus sermo, quem audivi?‘The word that I have heard is good.’
quare ergo non custodisti jusjurandum Domini,Then why have you not kept the oath to the Lord,et præceptum quod præceperam tibi?and the commandment which I instructed to you?”
Dixitque rex ad Semei:And the king said to Shimei:Tu nosti omne malum cujus tibi conscium est cor tuum,“You know all the evil, of which your heart is conscious, quod fecisti David patri meo:which you did to David, my father.reddidit Dominus malitiam tuam in caput tuum:The Lord has repaid your wickedness upon your own head.”
et rex Salomon benedictus,And king Solomon shall be blessed,et thronus David erit stabilis coram Domino usque in sempiternum.and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord, even forever.
Jussit itaque rex Banaiæ filio Jojadæ,And so the king commanded Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada.qui egressus,And going out, percussit eum, et mortuus est.he struck him down, and he died.
