Rex autem Salomon adamavit mulieres alienigenas multas,But king Solomon loved many foreign women, filiam quoque Pharaonis, including the daughter of Pharaoh,et Moabitidas, and women of Moab,et Ammonitidas, and of Ammon,Idumæas,and of Idumea,et Sidonias, and of Sidon,et Hethæas:and of the Hittites.
de gentibus super quibus dixit Dominus filiis Israël:These were of the nations about whom the Lord said to the sons of Israel:Non ingrediemini ad eas,“You shall not enter to them, neque de illis ingredientur ad vestras:and none of them shall enter to anyone of yours.certissime enim avertent corda vestra ut sequamini deos earum. For they will most certainly turn aside your hearts, so that you follow their gods.”His itaque copulatus est Salomon ardentissimo amore. And yet, to these Solomon was joined with a greatly enflamed love.
Fueruntque ei uxores quasi reginæ septingentæ,And for him, there were seven hundred wives, as if they were queens,et concubinæ trecentæ:and three hundred concubines.et averterunt mulieres cor ejus. And the women turned aside his heart.
Cumque jam esset senex,And when now he was old, depravatum est cor ejus per mulieres, his heart was perverted by the women,ut sequeretur deos alienos:so that he followed strange gods.nec erat cor ejus perfectum cum Domino Deo suo,And his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God,sicut cor David patris ejus.as was the heart of his father David.
Sed colebat Salomon Astarthen deam Sidoniorum,For Solomon worshipped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians,et Moloch idolum Ammonitarum.and Milcom, the idol of the Ammonites.
Fecitque Salomon quod non placuerat coram Domino,And Solomon did what was not pleasing in the sight of the Lord.et non adimplevit ut sequeretur Dominum sicut David pater ejus. And he did not continue to follow the Lord, as his father David did.
Tunc ædificavit Salomon fanum Chamos idolo Moab in monte qui est contra Jerusalem,Then Solomon built a shrine for Chemosh, the idol of Moab, on the mount that is opposite Jerusalem,et Moloch idolo filiorum Ammon.and for Milcom, the idol of the sons of Ammon.
Atque in hunc modum fecit universis uxoribus suis alienigenis,And he acted in this manner for all his foreign wives,quæ adolebant thura, who were burning incenseet immolabant diis suis.and immolating to their gods.
Igitur iratus est Dominus Salomoni,And so, the Lord became angry with Solomon, quod aversa esset mens ejus a Domino Deo Israël,because his mind had been turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, qui apparuerat ei secundo, who had appeared to him twice,
et præceperat de verbo hoc ne sequeretur deos alienos:and who had instructed him about this matter, lest he follow strange gods.et non custodivit quæ mandavit ei Dominus. But he did not observe what the Lord commanded to him.
Dixit itaque Dominus Salomoni:And so, the Lord said to Solomon:Quia habuisti hoc apud te,“Because you have this with you,et non custodisti pactum meum, et præcepta mea quæ mandavi tibi, and because you have not kept my covenant and my precepts, which I commanded to you, disrumpens scindam regnum tuum,I will tear apart your kingdom,et dabo illud servo tuo.and I will give it to your servant.
Verumtamen in diebus tuis non faciam propter David patrem tuum:Yet truly, I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David.de manu filii tui scindam illud,From the hand of your son, I will tear it away.
nec totum regnum auferam,Neither will I take away the whole kingdom. Instead, sed tribum unam dabo filio tuo propter David servum meum,I will grant one tribe to your son, for the sake of David, my servant,et Jerusalem, quam elegi.and Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
Suscitavit autem Dominus adversarium Salomoni Adad Idumæum de semine regio, qui erat in Edom. Then the Lord raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad of Idumea, from an offspring of the king who was in Idumea.
Cum enim esset David in Idumæa,For when David was in Idumea,et ascendisset Joab princeps militiæ ad sepeliendum eos qui fuerant interfecti,Joab, the leader of the military, had ascended to bury those who had been killed,et occidisset omnem masculinum in Idumæaand he had killed every male in Idumea.
(sex enim mensibus ibi moratus est Joab,And Joab remained in that place for six months,et omnis Israël,with all of Israel, donec interimeret omne masculinum in Idumæa),until he had put to death every male in Idumea.
fugit Adad ipse,Then Hadad fled,et viri Idumæi de servis patris ejus cum eo,he and some men of Idumea from among the servants of his father with him,ut ingrederetur Ægyptum:so that he might enter into Egypt.erat autem Adad puer parvulus. But Hadad was then a little boy.
Cumque surrexissent de Madian,And when they had risen up from Midian, venerunt in Pharan, they went into Paran, tuleruntque secum viros de Pharan, and they took with them some men from Paran.et introierunt Ægyptum ad Pharaonem regem Ægypti:And they went into Egypt, to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.qui dedit ei domum,And he gave him a house,et cibos constituit, and he appointed food for him,et terram delegavit.and he assigned land to him.
Et invenit Adad gratiam coram Pharaone valde,And Hadad found great favor before Pharaoh,in tantum ut daret ei uxorem sororem uxoris suæ germanam Taphnes reginæ.so much so that he gave to him as wife, the sister of his own wife, queen Tahpenes.
Genuitque ei soror Taphnes Genubath filium,And the sister of Tahpenes bore to him a son, Genubath.et nutrivit eum Taphnes in domo Pharaonis:And Tahpenes raised him in the house of Pharaoh.eratque Genubath habitans apud Pharaonem cum filiis ejus. And Genubath was living with Pharaoh and his sons.
Cumque audisset Adad in Ægypto dormisse David cum patribus suis,And when Hadad had heard in Egypt that David had slept with his fathers,et mortuum esse Joab principem militiæ,and that Joab, the leader of the military, had died, dixit Pharaoni:he said to Pharaoh,Dimitte me,“Release me,ut vadam in terram meam.so that I may go to my own land.”
Dixitque ei Pharao:And Pharaoh said to him,Qua enim re apud me indiges,“But what is lacking to you with me,ut quæras ire ad terram tuam?so that you would seek to go to your own land?”At ille respondit:But he responded:Nulla:“Nothing.sed obsecro te ut dimittas me.Yet I beg you that you may release me.”
Suscitavit quoque ei Deus adversarium Razon filium Eliada, qui fugerat Adarezer regem Soba dominum suum:Also, God raised up against him an adversary, Rezon, the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord, Hadad-Ezer, the king of Zobah.
et congregavit contra eum viros,And he gathered together men against him.et factus est princeps latronum cum interficeret eos David:And when David put those of Zobah to death, he became a leader of robbers.abieruntque Damascum,And they went away to Damascus,et habitaverunt ibi,and they lived there.et constituerunt eum regem in Damasco:And they appointed him to be king of Damascus.
eratque adversarius Israëli cunctis diebus Salomonis:And he was an adversary to Israel during all the days of Solomon.et hoc est malum Adad,And such is the evil of Hadadet odium contra Israël:and of his hatred against Israel.regnavitque in Syria. And he reigned in Syria.
Jeroboam quoque filius Nabat,Also, there was Jeroboam, the son of Nebat,Ephrathæus, de Sareda,an Ephraimite from Zeredah, servus Salomonis,a servant of Solomon, cujus mater erat nomine Sarva, whose mother was named Zeruah, mulier vidua,a widowed woman.levavit manum contra regem. He lifted up his hand against the king.
Et hæc est causa rebellionis adversus eum,And this is the reason for his rebellion against him:quia Salomon ædificavit Mello, that Solomon built up Millo,et coæquavit voraginem civitatis David patris sui.and that he filled in a deep hole in the city of David, his father.
Erat autem Jeroboam vir fortis et potens:Now Jeroboam was a valiant and powerful man.vidensque Salomon adolescentem bonæ indolis et industrium,And perceiving the young man to be ingenious and industrious, constituerat eum præfectum super tributa universæ domus Joseph.Solomon appointed him as first ruler over the tributes of the entire house of Joseph.
Factum est igitur in tempore illo,And it happened, in that time,ut Jeroboam egrederetur de Jerusalem, that Jeroboam departed from Jerusalem.et inveniret eum Ahias Silonites propheta in via,And the prophet Ahijah, the Shilonite, wearing a new cloak, opertus pallio novo:found him on the way.erant autem duo tantum in agro. And the two were alone in the field.
Apprehendensque Ahias pallium suum novum quo coopertus erat,And taking his new cloak, with which he was covered, scidit in duodecim partes.Ahijah tore it into twelve parts.
Et ait ad Jeroboam:And he said to Jeroboam:Tolle tibi decem scissuras:“Take ten pieces for yourself.hæc enim dicit Dominus Deus Israël:For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Ecce ego scindam regnum de manu Salomonis,‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon,et dabo tibi decem tribus.and I will give to you ten tribes.
Porro una tribus remanebit ei propter servum meum David,Yet one tribe shall remain with him, for the sake of my servant,et Jerusalem civitatem,David, as well as Jerusalem, quam elegi ex omnibus tribubus Israël:the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
eo quod dereliquerit me,For he has abandoned me,et adoraverit Astarthen deam Sidoniorum, and he has adored Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians,et Chamos deum Moab, and Chemosh, the god of Moab,et Moloch deum filiorum Ammon:and Milcom, the god of the sons of Ammon.et non ambulaverit in viis meis,And he has not walked in my ways,ut faceret justitiam coram me,so that he would do justice before me,et præcepta mea et judicia, sicut David pater ejus.and so that he would carry out my precepts and judgments, as his father David did.
Nec auferam omne regnum de manu ejus,But I will not take the entire kingdom from his hand.sed ducem ponam eum cunctis diebus vitæ suæ,Instead, I will establish him as the ruler during all the days of his life, propter David servum meum quem elegi, for the sake of my servant David, whom I chose, qui custodivit mandata mea et præcepta mea.who kept my commandments and my precepts.
Auferam autem regnum de manu filii ejus,But I will take away the kingdom from the hand of his son,et dabo tibi decem tribus:and I will give to you ten tribes.
filio autem ejus dabo tribum unam,Then, to his son, I will give one tribe,ut remaneat lucerna David servo meo cunctis diebus coram me in Jerusalem civitate,so that there may remain a lamp for my servant David before me, for all days, in Jerusalem, quam elegi ut esset nomen meum ibi.the city which I have chosen, so that my name would be there.
Te autem assumam,And I will take you up,et regnabis super omnia quæ desiderat anima tua,and you shall reign over all that your soul desires.erisque rex super Israël.And you shall be king over Israel.
Si igitur audieris omnia quæ præcepero tibi,Therefore,et ambulaveris in viis meis,if you will listen to all that I will command you,et feceris quod rectum est coram me,and if you will walk in my ways, custodiens mandata meaand do what is right in my sight,et præcepta mea, keeping my commandments and my precepts, sicut fecit David servus meus:just as my servant David did,ero tecum, then I will be with you,et ædificabo tibi domum fidelem, and I will build for you a faithful house, quomodo ædificavi David domum:in the way that I built a house for David,et tradam tibi Israël:and I will deliver Israel to you.
et affligam semen David super hoc,And I will afflict the offspring of David over this, verumtamen non cunctis diebus.but truly not for all days.’”
Voluit ergo Salomon interficere Jeroboam:Therefore, Solomon wanted to kill Jeroboam.qui surrexit, et aufugit in Ægyptum ad Sesac regem Ægypti,But he rose up and fled away to Egypt, to Shishak,et fuit in Ægypto usque ad mortem Salomonis.the king of Egypt. And he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
Reliquum autem verborum Salomonis,Now the rest of the words of Solomon,et omnia quæ fecit, and all that he did,et sapientia ejus, and his wisdom: behold, ecce universa scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum Salomonis.these are all written in the book of the words of the days of Solomon.
Dies autem quos regnavit Salomon in Jerusalem super omnem Israël,And the days that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem, over all of Israel, quadraginta anni sunt.were forty years.
Dormivitque Salomon cum patribus suis,And Solomon slept with his fathers,et sepultus est in civitate David patris sui:and he was buried in the city of David, his father.regnavitque Roboam filius ejus pro eo.And Rehoboam, his son, reigned in his place.
