Venit autem Roboam in Sichem:Then Rehoboam went to Shechem.illuc enim congregatus erat omnis Israël ad constituendum eum regem. For in that place, all of Israel had gathered to appoint him as king.

At vero Jeroboam filius Nabat,Yet truly, Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, cum adhuc esset in Ægypto profugus a facie regis Salomonis, while he was still in Egypt as a fugitive from the face of king Solomon, audita morte ejus, hearing of his death, reversus est de Ægypto.returned from Egypt.

MiseruntqueAnd they sent and called him.et vocaverunt eum:Therefore, venit ergo Jeroboam,Jeroboam went,et omnis multitudo Israël,with the entire multitude of Israel,et locuti sunt ad Roboam, and they spoke to Rehoboam, dicentes:saying:

Pater tuus durissimum jugum imposuit nobis:“Your father imposed a very harsh yoke upon us. And so,tu itaque nunc imminue paululum de imperio patris tui durissimo, et de jugo gravissimo quod imposuit nobis, you should now take away a little from the very harsh rule of your father and from his very grievous yoke, which he imposed upon us,et serviemus tibi.and we will serve you.”

Qui ait eis:And he said to them,Ite usque ad tertium diem,“Go away, until the third day,et revertimini ad me.and then return to me.”Cumque abiisset populus,And when the people had gone away,

iniit consilium rex Roboam cum senioribus qui assistebant coram Salomone patre ejus cum adhuc viveret, king Rehoboam took counsel with the elders who had assisted before his father Solomon while he was still living.et ait:And he said,Quod datis mihi consilium,“What counsel do you give to me,ut respondeam populo huic?so that I may respond to this people?”

Qui dixerunt ei:They said to him,Si hodie obedieris populo huic,“If today you will obeyet servieris, and serve this people,et petitioni eorum cesseris, and yield to their petition, locutusque fueris ad eos verba lenia, and if you will speak lenient words to them, erunt tibi servi cunctis diebus.they will be your servants for all days.”

Qui dereliquit consilium senum,But he abandoned the counsel of the old men, quod dederant ei,which they had given to him.et adhibuit adolescentes, qui nutriti fuerant cum eo,And he consulted the young men who had been raised with him,et assistebant illi, and who were assisting him.

dixitque ad eos:And he said to them:Quod mihi datis consilium,“What counsel do you give to me,ut respondeam populo huic,so that I may respond to this people, qui dixerunt mihi:who have said to me:Levius fac jugum quod imposuit pater tuus super nos?‘Make light the yoke that your father imposed on us?’”

Et dixerunt ei juvenes qui nutriti fuerant cum eo:And the young men who had been raised with him, said:Sic loqueris populo huic,“You shall speak in this way to this people, qui locuti sunt ad te,who have spoken to you, dicentes:saying:Pater tuus aggravavit jugum nostrum: tu releva nos.‘Your father weighed down our yoke. You should relieve us.’Sic loqueris ad eos:You shall say this to them:Minimus digitus meus grossior est dorso patris mei.‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.

Et nunc pater meus posuit super vos jugum grave,And now, my father placed a heavy yoke upon you,ego autem addam super jugum vestrum:but I will add more upon your yoke.pater meus cecidit vos flagellis,My father cut you with whips, ego autem cædam vos scorpionibus.but I will beat you with scorpions.’”

Venit ergo JeroboamTherefore,et omnis populus ad Roboam die tertia,Jeroboam and all the people went to Rehoboam on the third day, sicut locutus fuerat rex, just as the king had spoken, dicens:saying,Revertimini ad me die tertia.“Return to me on the third day.”

Responditque rex populo dura,And the king responded to the people harshly, derelicto consilio seniorum quod ei dederant, leaving behind the counsel of the elders that they had given to him.

et locutus est eis secundum consilium juvenum,And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, dicens:saying:Pater meus aggravavit jugum vestrum,“My father weighed down your yoke, ego autem addam jugo vestro:but I will add more to your yoke.pater meus cecidit vos flagellis,My father cut you with whips, ego autem cædam vos scorpionibus.but I will beat you with scorpions.”

Et non acquievit rex populo: quoniam aversatus fuerat eum Dominus,And the king did not acquiesce to the people. For the Lord had turned him away,ut suscitaret verbum suum quod locutus fuerat in manu Ahiæ Silonitæ,so that he might raise up his word, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite,ad Jeroboam filium Nabat.to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.

Videns itaque populus quod noluisset eos audire rex,And so the people, seeing that the king had not been willing to listen to them, respondit ei dicens:responded to him, saying:Quæ nobis pars in David?“What part do we have in David?vel quæ hæreditas in filio Isai? vade in tabernacula tua,Or what inheritance do we have in the son of Jesse? Go to your own tents,Israël:O Israel.nunc vide domum tuam, David. Now David, see to your own house.”Et abiit Israël in tabernacula sua.And Israel went away to their own tents.

Super filios autem Israël, quicumque habitabant in civitatibus Juda,But over all the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah, regnavit Roboam.Rehoboam reigned.

Misit ergo rex Roboam Aduram,Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, qui erat super tributa:who was over the tribute.et lapidavit eum omnis Israël,And all of Israel stoned him,et mortuus est.and he died. Therefore,Porro rex Roboam festinus ascendit currum, king Rehoboam hurrying, climbed into the chariot,et fugit in Jerusalem:and fled to Jerusalem.

recessitque Israël a domo David usque in præsentem diem. And Israel drew away from the house of David, even to the present day.

Factum est autem cum audisset omnis Israël quod reversus esset Jeroboam,And it happened that, when all of Israel had heard that Jeroboam had returned, miserunt, et vocaverunt eum congregato cœtu,gathering an assembly, they sent and called him,et constituerunt eum regem super omnem Israël:and they appointed him as king over all of Israel.nec secutus est quisquam domum David præter tribum Juda solam. And no one followed the house of David, except the tribe of Judah alone.

Venit autem Roboam Jerusalem,Then Rehoboam went to Jerusalem,et congregavit universam domum Juda, and he gathered together the entire house of Judah,et tribum Benjamin, and the tribe of Benjamin, centum octoginta millia electorum virorum bellatorum, ut pugnarent contra domum Israël,one hundred and eighty thousand elect men of war, so that they might fight against the house of Israel,et reducerent regnum Roboam filio Salomonis.and might bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon.

Factus est autem sermo Domini ad Semeiam virum Dei,But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, the man of God,dicens:saying:

Loquere ad Roboam filium Salomonis regem Juda,“Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, the king of Judah,et ad omnem domum Juda, and to all the house of Judah,et Benjamin, and to Benjamin,et reliquos de populo, and to the rest of the people, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus:‘Thus says the Lord:Non ascendetis,You shall not go up,neque bellabitis contra fratres vestros filios Israël:and you shall not make war against your brothers, the sons of Israel.revertatur vir in domum suam:Let each man return to his own house.a me enim factum est verbum hoc. Audierunt sermonem Domini,For this word came from me.’” And they listened to the word of the Lord,et reversi sunt de itinere, and they returned from the journey, sicut eis præceperat Dominus.as the Lord had instructed them.

Ædificavit autem Jeroboam Sichem in monte Ephraim,Then Jeroboam built up Shechem, on mount Ephraim,et habitavit ibi:and he lived there.et egressus inde ædificavit Phanuel. And departing from there, he built up Penuel.

Dixitque Jeroboam in corde suo:And Jeroboam said in his heart:Nunc revertetur regnum ad domum David,“Now the kingdom will return to the house of David,

si ascenderit populus iste ut faciat sacrificia in domo Domini in Jerusalem:if this people ascend to offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem.et convertetur cor populi hujus ad dominum suum Roboam regem Juda,And the heart of this people will be converted to their lord Rehoboam, the king of Judah, interficientque me, et revertentur ad eum.and they will put me to death, and return to him.”

Et excogitato consilio fecit duos vitulos aureos,And devising a plan, he made two golden calves.et dixit eis:And he said to them:Nolite ultra ascendere in Jerusalem:“No longer choose to ascend to Jerusalem. Behold, ecce dii tui Israël,these are your gods, O Israel, qui te eduxerunt de terra Ægypti.who led you away from the land of Egypt!”

Posuitque unum in Bethel,And he stationed one in Bethel,et alterum in Dan:and the other in Dan.

et factum est verbum hoc in peccatum:And this word became an occasion of sin.ibat enim populus ad adorandum vitulum usque in Dan.For the people went to adore the calf, even to Dan.

Et fecit fana in excelsis,And he made shrines on the high places,et sacerdotes de extremis populi, and he made priests out of the lowest people, qui non erant de filiis Levi.who were not of the sons of Levi.

Constituitque diem solemnem in mense octavo,And he appointed a solemn day in the eighth month, quintadecima die mensis,on the fifteenth day of the month,in similitudinem solemnitatis quæ celebrabatur in Juda.in imitation of the solemnity that was celebrated in Judah.Et ascendens altare,And ascending to the altar, similiter fecit in Bethel,he acted similarly in Bethel,ut immolaret vitulis quos fabricatus fuerat:so that he immolated to the calves, which he had made.constituitque in Bethel sacerdotes excelsorum quæ fecerat. And in Bethel, he appointed priests of the high places, which he had made.

Et ascendit super altare quod exstruxerat in Bethel,And he ascended to the altar, which he had raised up in Bethel, quintadecima die mensis octavi,on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, quem finxerat de corde suo:the day that he had decided in his own heart.et fecit solemnitatem filiis Israël,And he made a solemnity to the sons of Israel,et ascendit super altare, and he ascended to the altar,ut adoleret incensum.so that he might burn incense.
