Et ecce vir Dei venit de Juda in sermone Domini in Bethel,And behold, by the word of the Lord, a man of God went from Judah to Bethel,Jeroboam stante super altare, when Jeroboam was standing over the altar,et thus jaciente.and burning incense.
Et exclamavit contra altare in sermone Domini,And by the word of the Lord, he cried out against the altar.et ait:And he said:Altare,“O altar, altare,O altar!hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold,Ecce filius nascetur domui David,a son will be born to the house of David,Josias nomine,Josiah by name.et immolabit super te sacerdotes excelsorum,And upon you, he will immolate the priests of the high places, qui nunc in te thura succendunt:who now burn incense upon you. And upon you,et ossa hominum super te incendet.he will burn up the bones of men.’”
Deditque in illa die signum,And he gave a sign on the same day, dicens:saying:Hoc erit signum quod locutus est Dominus:“This will be the sign that the Lord has spoken. Behold, ecce altare scindetur, the altar shall be torn apart,et effundetur cinis qui in eo est.and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.”
Cumque audisset rex sermonem hominis Dei quem inclamaverat contra altare in Bethel,And when the king had heard the word of the man of God, which he had cried out against the altar at Bethel, extendit manum suam de altari,he extended his hand from the altar, dicens:saying,Apprehendite eum.“Apprehend him!”Et exaruit manus ejus quam extenderat contra eum,But his hand, which he had extended against him, withered.nec valuit retrahere eam ad se.And he was unable to draw it back to himself.
Altare quoque scissum est,Also, the altar was torn apart,et effusus est cinis de altari, and the ashes were poured out from the altar, juxta signum quod prædixerat vir Dei in sermone Domini.in accord with the sign that the man of God had predicted by the word of the Lord.
Et ait rex ad virum Dei:And the king said to the man of God,Deprecare faciem Domini Dei tui,“Entreat the face of the Lord your God,et ora pro me,and pray for me,ut restituatur manus mea mihi.so that my hand may be restored to me.”Oravitque vir Dei faciem Domini,And the man of God prayed before the face of the Lord,et reversa est manus regis ad eum,and the hand of the king was restored to him,et facta est sicut prius fuerat.and it became as it had been before.
Locutus est autem rex ad virum Dei:Then the king said to the man of God:Veni mecum domum ut prandeas,“Come home with me, so that you may dine.et dabo tibi munera. And I will give you gifts.”
Responditque vir Dei ad regem:And the man of God responded to the king:Si dederis mihi mediam partem domus tuæ,“Even if you will give me one half part of your house, non veniam tecum,I will not go with you,nec comedam panem, nor eat bread, neque bibam aquam in loco isto:nor drink water in this place.
sic enim mandatum est mihi in sermone Domini præcipientis:For so it was commanded to me by the word of the Lord, ordering:Non comedes panem,‘You shall not eat bread, neque bibes aquam, and you shall not drink water, nec reverteris per viam qua venisti.nor shall you return by the way that you came.’”
Abiit ergo per aliam viam,Then he departed by another way,et non est reversus per iter quo venerat in Bethel.and he did not return along the way that he had traveled to Bethel.
Prophetes autem quidam senex habitabat in Bethel:Now a certain elderly prophet was living in Bethel.ad quem venerunt filii sui, et narraverunt ei omnia opera quæ fecerat vir Dei illa die in Bethel:His sons went to him, and they described to him all the works which the man of God had accomplished on that day in Bethel.et verba quæ locutus fuerat ad regem, narraverunt patri suo.And they described to their father the words that he had spoken to the king.
Et dixit eis pater eorum:And their father said to them,Per quam viam abiit?“By which way did he depart?”Ostenderunt ei filii sui viam per quam abierat vir Dei,His sons showed him the way by which the man of God,qui venerat de Juda.who had come from Judah, had departed.
Et ait filiis suis:And he said to his sons,Sternite mihi asinum.“Saddle the donkey for me.”Qui cum stravissent,And when they had saddled it,ascendit,he climbed on,
et abiit post virum Dei,and he went away after the man of God.et invenit eum sedentem subtus terebinthum:And he found him sitting under a terebinth tree.et ait illi:And he said to him,Tune es vir Dei qui venisti de Juda?“Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”Respondit ille:And he responded,Ego sum.“I am.”
Dixitque ad eum:And he said to him,Veni mecum domum,“Come home with me,ut comedas panem.so that you may eat bread.”
Qui ait:But he said:Non possum reverti,“I am not able to turn back, neque venire tecum:nor to go with you.nec comedam panem,Neither will I eat bread, neque bibam aquam in loco isto,or drink water in this place.
quia locutus est Dominus ad me in sermone Domini,For the Lord has spoken to me, by the word of the Lord, dicens:saying,Non comedes panem,“You shall not eat bread,et non bibes aquam ibi,and you shall not drink water in that place, nec reverteris per viam qua ieris.nor shall you return by the way that you arrived.”
Qui ait illi:And he said to him:Et ego propheta sum similis tui:“I, too, am a prophet like you.et angelus locutus est mihi in sermone Domini,And an Angel spoke to me, by the word of the Lord, dicens:saying,Reduc eum tecum in domum tuam,‘Lead him back with you to your house,ut comedat panem,so that he may eat bread,et bibat aquam.and drink water.’”Fefellit eum,And so he deceived him.
et reduxit secum:And he led him back with him.comedit ergo panem in domo ejus,Then he ate breadet bibit aquam.and drank water in his house.
Cumque sederent ad mensam,And while they were sitting at table, factus est sermo Domini ad prophetam qui reduxerat eum.the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had led him back.
Et exclamavit ad virum Dei qui venerat de Juda,And he cried out to the man of God who had arrived from Judah, dicens:saying:Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Quia non obediens fuisti ori Domini,Because you were not obedient to the mouth of the Lord,et non custodisti mandatum quod præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus, and you did not keep the commandment that the Lord your God instructed to you,
et reversus es,and you turned back,et comedisti panem, and ate bread,et bibisti aquam in loco in quo præcepit tibi ne comederes panemand drank water in the place where he commanded you that you should not eat bread, neque biberes aquam, nor drink water:non inferetur cadaver tuum in sepulchrum patrum tuorum.your dead body shall not be carried back to the sepulcher of your fathers.”
Cumque comedisset et bibisset,And when he had eaten and had drunk, stravit asinum suum prophetæ quem reduxerat.he saddled his donkey for the prophet whom he had led back.
Qui cum abiisset,And when he had departed, invenit eum leo in via,a lion found him along the way,et occidit, and it killed him,et erat cadaver ejus projectum in itinere:and his dead body was left upon the road.asinus autem stabat juxta illum,Now the donkey was standing beside him.et leo stabat juxta cadaver. And the lion was standing beside the dead body.
Et ecce viri transeuntes viderunt cadaver projectum in via,And behold,et leonem stantem juxta cadaver.men who were passing by saw the dead body lying in the road,Et venerunt, with the lion standing beside the body.et divulgaverunt in civitate in qua prophetes ille senex habitabat. And they went and made it widely known in the city where that elderly prophet was living.
Quod cum audisset propheta ille qui reduxerat eum de via,And when that prophet, who had led him back from the way, had heard it,ait:he said:Vir Dei est,“It is the man of God,qui inobediens fuit ori Domini, who was disobedient to the mouth of the Lord.et tradidit eum Dominus leoni,And the Lord has delivered him to the lion.et confregit eum,And it has torn him apart and killed him,et occidit juxta verbum Domini quod locutus est ei.in accord with the word of the Lord, which he spoke to him.”
Dixitque ad filios suos:And he said to his sons,Sternite mihi asinum.“Saddle a donkey for me.”Qui cum stravissent,And when they had saddled it,
et ille abiisset, and he had departed, invenit cadaver ejus projectum in via,he found the dead body lying on the road,et asinum et leonem stantes juxta cadaver:with the donkey and the lion standing beside the dead body.non comedit leo de cadavere,The lion did not eat from the dead body, nec læsit asinum.nor did it harm the donkey.
Tulit ergo prophetes cadaver viri Dei,Then the prophet took the dead body of the man of God,et posuit illud super asinum, and he placed it upon the donkey, and returning,et reversus intulit in civitatem prophetæ senis ut plangeret eum.he brought it into the city of the elderly prophet, so that he might mourn for him.
Et posuit cadaver ejus in sepulchro suo,And he placed his dead body in his own sepulcher.et planxerunt eum:And they mourned for him, saying:Heu,“Alas!heu mi frater!Alas! My brother!”
Cumque planxissent eum,And when they had mourned over him, dixit ad filios suos:he said to his sons:Cum mortuus fuero,“When I will have died, sepelite me in sepulchro in quo vir Dei sepultus est:bury me in the sepulcher in which the man of God was buried.juxta ossa ejus ponite ossa mea.Place my bones beside his bones.
Profecto enim veniet sermo quem prædixit in sermone Domini contra altare quod est in Bethel, et contra omnia fana excelsorum quæ sunt in urbibus Samariæ.For certainly, the word will arrive, which he predicted by the word of the Lord, against the altar, which is in Bethel, and against all the shrines of the high places, which are in the cities of Samaria.”
Post verba hæc non est reversus Jeroboam de via sua pessima,After these words, Jeroboam did not turn back from his very evil way. Instead, sed e contrario fecit de novissimis populi sacerdotes excelsorum:to the contrary, he made priests for the high places out of the least of the people.quicumque volebat,Whosoever was willing, implebat manum suam,he filled his hand,et fiebat sacerdos excelsorum.and he became a priest of the high places.
Et propter hanc causam peccavit domus Jeroboam,And for this reason, the house of Jeroboam sinned,et eversa est,and was uprooted,et deleta de superficie terræ.and was wiped from the face of the earth.
