Igitur in octavodecimo anno regni Jeroboam filii Nabat,Then, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, regnavit Abiam super Judam.Abijam reigned over Judah.
Tribus annis regnavit in Jerusalem:He reigned for three years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom. The name of his mother was Maacah, the daughter of Abishalom.
Ambulavitque in omnibus peccatis patris sui,And he walked in all the sins of his father,quæ fecerat ante eum:which he had done before him.nec erat cor ejus perfectum cum Domino Deo suo,Neither was his heart perfect with the Lord his God,sicut cor David patris ejus.as was the heart of David, his father.
Sed propter David dedit ei Dominus Deus suus lucernam in Jerusalem,But for the sake of David, the Lord his God gave to him a lamp in Jerusalem,ut suscitaret filium ejus post eum,so that he might raise up his son after him,et statueret Jerusalem:and so that he might establish Jerusalem.
eo quod fecisset David rectum in oculis Domini,For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord,et non declinasset ab omnibus quæ præceperat ei cunctis diebus vitæ suæ,and he had not declined from all of the things that he had instructed to him, during all the days of his life, excepto sermone Uriæ Hethæi.except the matter of Uriah, the Hittite.
Attamen bellum fuit inter Roboam et Jeroboam omni tempore vitæ ejus. Now there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam during the entire time of his life.
Reliqua autem sermonum Abiam,And the rest of the words of Abijam,et omnia quæ fecit, and all that he did, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda?were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?Fuitque prælium inter Abiam et inter Jeroboam. And there was fighting between Abijam and Jeroboam.
Et dormivit Abiam cum patribus suis,And Abijam slept with his fathers,et sepelierunt eum in civitate David, and they buried him in the city of David.regnavitque Asa filius ejus pro eo.And Asa, his son, reigned in his place.
In anno ergo vigesimo Jeroboam regis Israël regnavit Asa rex Juda,Then, in the twentieth year of Jeroboam, the king of Israel, Asa reigned as king of Judah.
et quadragintaAnd he reigned for forty-one years in Jerusalem.et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Maacah,Nomen matris ejus Maacha filia Abessalom.the daughter of Abishalom.
Et fecit Asa rectum ante conspectum Domini,And Asa did what was right before the sight of the Lord, sicut David pater ejus:just as his father David did.
et abstulit effeminatos de terra,And he took away the effeminate from the land.purgavitque universas sordes idolorum quæ fecerant patres ejus. And he purged all the filth of the idols, which his fathers had made.
Insuper et Maacham matrem suam amovit,Moreover, he also removed his mother, Maacah,ne esset princeps in sacris Priapi, from being the leader in the sacrifices of Priapus,et in luco ejus quem consecraverat:and in his sacred grove which she had consecrated.subvertitque specum ejus,And he destroyed his grotto.et confregit simulacrum turpissimum,And he shattered the very indecent idol,et combussit in torrente Cedron:and he burned it at the torrent Kidron.
excelsa autem non abstulit. But the high places, he did not take away.Verumtamen cor Asa perfectum erat cum Domino cunctis diebus suis:Yet truly, the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord during all his days.
et intulit ea quæ sanctificaverat pater suus, et voverat, in domum Domini,And he brought the things that his father had sanctified and vowed back to the house of the Lord:argentum, the silver,et aurum, and the gold,et vasa.and the vessels.
Bellum autem erat inter Asa,Now there was war between Asa and Baasha,et Baasa regem Israël cunctis diebus eorum.the king of Israel, during all their days.
Ascendit quoque Baasa rex Israël in Judam,And Baasha, the king of Israel, ascended against Judah.et ædificavit Rama,And he built up Ramah,ut non posset quispiam egredi vel ingredi de parte Asa regis Juda.so that no one would be able to exit or enter from the side of Asa, the king of Judah.
Tollens itaque Asa omne argentum et aurum quod remanserat in thesauris domus Domini,And so, Asa took all the silver and the gold which had remained in the treasuries of the house of the Lord,et in thesauris domus regiæ,and in the treasuries of the house of the king,et dedit illud in manus servorum suorum:and he gave it into the hands of his servants.et misit ad Benadad filium Tabremon filii Hezion,And he sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, regem Syriæ,the king of Syria, qui habitabat in Damasco, who was living in Damascus, dicens:saying:
Fœdus est inter me et te,“There is a pact between me and you,et inter patrem meum et patrem tuum:and between my father and your father.ideo misi tibi munera,For this reason, argentum et aurum:I have sent to you gifts of silver and of gold.et peto ut venias,And I ask you to go and break your pact with Baasha,et irritum facias fœdus quod habes cum Baasa rege Israël,the king of Israel,et recedat a me.so that he may withdraw from me.”
Acquiescens Benadad regi Asa,Benhadad, acquiescing to king Asa,misit principes exercitus sui in civitates Israël,sent the leaders of his army against the cities of Israel.et percusserunt Ahion,And they struck Ijon, and Dan,et Dan,and Abel,et Abeldomum Maacha, the house of Maacah,et universam Cenneroth, and all of Chinneroth, omnem scilicet terram Nephthali.that is, all the land of Naphtali.
Quod cum audisset Baasa,And when Baasha had heard this, intermisit ædificare Rama,he ceased from fortifying Ramah,et reversus est in Thersa.and he returned to Tirzah.
Rex autem Asa nuntium misit in omnem Judam,Then king Asa sent an announcement to all of Judah, dicens:saying,Nemo sit excusatus.“Let no one be excused.”Et tulerunt lapides de Rama,And they took away the stones from Ramah,et ligna ejus, and its timber, quibus ædificaverat Baasa, with which Baasha had fortified it.et exstruxit de eis rex Asa Gabaa Benjamin,And from these things,et Maspha.king Asa built up Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
Reliqua autem omnium sermonum Asa,Now all the rest of the words of Asa,et universæ fortitudines ejus, and his entire strength, and all that he did,et cuncta quæ fecit, and the cities that he built,et civitates quas exstruxit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda?were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah? Yet truly,Verumtamen in tempore senectutis suæ doluit pedes.in the time of his old age, he was afflicted in his feet.
Et dormivit cum patribus suis,And he slept with his fathers,et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui.and he was buried with them in the city of David, his father.Regnavitque Josaphat filius ejus pro eo.And Jehoshaphat, his son, reigned in his place.
Nadab vero filius Jeroboam regnavit super Israël anno secundo Asa regis Juda: regnavitque super Israël duobus annis.Yet truly, Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, reigned over Israel, in the second year of Asa, the king of Judah. And he reigned over Israel for two years.
Et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini,And he did what is evil in the sight of the Lord.et ambulavit in viis patris sui,And he walked in the ways of his father and in his sins,et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.by which he caused Israel to sin.
Insidiatus est autem ei Baasa filius Ahiæ de domo Issachar,Then Baasha, the son of Ahijah, from the house of Issachar,et percussit eum in Gebbethon, set an ambush against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon,quæ est urbs Philisthinorum:which is a city of the Philistines.siquidem Nadab et omnis Israël obsidebant Gebbethon. For indeed, Nadab and all of Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.
Interfecit ergo illum Baasa in anno tertio Asa regis Juda,And so Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa, the king of Judah,et regnavit pro eo.and he reigned in his place.
Cumque regnasset,And when he had reigned, percussit omnem domum Jeroboam:he struck down the entire house of Jeroboam.non dimisit ne unam quidem animam de semine ejus donec deleret eum,He did not leave behind even one soul from his offspring, until he had wiped him away, juxta verbum Domini quod locutus fuerat in manu servi sui Ahiæ Silonitis,in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite,
propter peccata Jeroboam, because of the sin of Jeroboam,quæ peccaverat, which he had committed,et quibus peccare fecerat Israël:and by which he had caused Israel to sin,et propter delictum quo irritaverat Dominum Deum Israël.and because of the offense by which he had provoked the Lord, the God of Israel.
Reliqua autem sermonum Nadab,But the rest of the words of Nadab,et omnia quæ operatus est,and all that he did, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Israël?were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Fuitque bellum inter Asa,And there was war between Asa and Baasha,et Baasa regem Israël,the king of Israel, cunctis diebus eorum.during all their days.
Anno tertio Asa regis Juda,In the third year of Asa, the king of Judah, regnavit Baasa filius Ahiæ super omnem Israël in Thersa,Baasha, the son of Ahijah, reigned over all of Israel, viginti quatuor annis.at Tirzah, for twenty-four years.
Et fecit malum coram Domino,And he did evil in the sight of the Lord.ambulavitque in via Jeroboam,And he walked in the ways of Jeroboam,et in peccatis ejus quibus peccare fecit Israël.and in his sins, by which he caused Israel to sin.
