Et dixit Elias Thesbites de habitatoribus Galaad ad Achab:And Elijah the Tishbite, from the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab,Vivit Dominus Deus Israël,“As the Lord lives, the God of Israel,in cujus conspectu sto, si erit annis his ros et pluvia,in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew or rain during these years, nisi juxta oris mei verba.except by the words of my mouth.”

Et factum est verbum Domini ad eum,And the word of the Lord came to him, dicens:saying:

Recede hinc,“Withdraw from here,et vade contra orientem, and go toward the east,et abscondere in torrente Carith, and hide at the torrent Cherith, qui est contra Jordanem, which is opposite the Jordan.

et ibi de torrente bibes:And there you shall drink from the torrent.corvisque præcepi ut pascant te ibi.And I have instructed the ravens to feed you there.”

Abiit ergo,Therefore,et fecit juxta verbum Domini:he went and acted in accord with the word of the Lord.cumque abiisset,And going away, sedit in torrente Carith,he settled by the torrent Cherith, qui est contra Jordanem.which is opposite the Jordan.

Corvi quoque deferebant ei panem et carnes mane,And the ravens carried bread and flesh to him in the morning, similiter panem et carnes vesperi, and likewise bread and flesh in the evening.et bibebat de torrente. And he drank from the torrent.

Post dies autem siccatus est torrens:But after some days, the torrent dried up.non enim pluerat super terram. For it had not rained upon the earth.

Factus est ergo sermo Domini ad eum,Then the word of the Lord came to him, dicens:saying:

Surge,“Rise up,et vade in Sarephta Sidoniorum, and go to Zarephath of the Sidonians,et manebis ibi:and dwell there.præcepi enim ibi mulieri viduæ ut pascat te.For I have instructed a widowed woman there to feed you.”

Surrexit,He rose up and went away to Zarephath.et abiit in Sarephta. And when he had arrived at the gate of the city,Cumque venisset ad portam civitatis,he saw the widowed woman collecting wood, apparuit ei mulier vidua colligens ligna, and he called to her.et vocavit eam,And he said to her, dixitque ei:“Give me a little water in a vessel,Da mihi paululum aquæ in vase ut bibam.so that I may drink.”

Cumque illa pergeret ut afferret,And as she was going to bring it,clamavit post tergum ejus,he called out after her, dicens:saying,Affer mihi,“Bring me also, obsecro,I beg you,et buccellam panis in manu tua.a morsel of bread in your hand.”

Quæ respondit:And she responded:Vivit Dominus Deus tuus,“As the Lord your God lives, quia non habeo panem,I have no bread, nisi quantum pugillus capere potest farinæ in hydria, except a handful of flour in a jar, and a little oil in a bottle. See,et paululum olei in lecytho:I am collecting a couple of sticks,en colligo duo ligna ut ingrediar et faciam illum mihi et filio meo,so that I may go in and make it for myself and my son,ut comedamus, et moriamur.so that we may eat it and die.”

Ad quam Elias ait:And Elijah said to her:Noli timere,“Do not be afraid.sed vade, et fac sicut dixisti:But go and do as you have said. Yet truly, verumtamen mihi primum fac de ipsa farinula subcinericium panem parvulum, first make for me, from the same flour, a little bread baked under ashes,et affer ad me:and bring it to me.tibi autem et filio tuo facies postea. Then afterward, make some for yourself and for your son.

Hæc autem dicit Dominus Deus Israël:For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Hydria farinæ non deficiet,‘The jar of flour will not fail, nec lecythus olei minuetur, nor the bottle of oil be diminished, usque ad diem in qua Dominus daturus est pluviam super faciem terræ.until the day when the Lord will grant rain upon the face of the earth.’”

Quæ abiit,She wentet fecit juxta verbum Eliæ:and acted in accord with the word of Elijah.et comedit ipse,And he ate,et illa, and sheet domus ejus:and her household ate.et ex illa dieAnd from that day,

hydria farinæ non defecit, the jar of flour did not fail,et lecythus olei non est imminutus, and the bottle of oil was not diminished, juxta verbum Domini quod locutus fuerat in manu Eliæ.in accord with the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of Elijah.

Factum est autem post hæc,Now it happened that, after these things,ægrotavit filius mulieris matrisfamilias, the son of the woman who was the mother of the family became ill.et erat languor fortissimus,And the sickness was very powerful, ita ut non remaneret in eo halitus.so that no breath remained in him.

Dixit ergo ad Eliam:Therefore,Quid mihishe said to Elijah:et tibi,“What is there between you and me,vir Dei?O man of God?ingressus es ad me,Have you entered to me,ut rememorarentur iniquitates meæ,so that my iniquities would be remembered,et interficeres filium meum?and so that you would put to death my son?”

Et ait ad eam Elias:And Elijah said to her,Da mihi filium tuum.“Give your son to me.”Tulitque eum de sinu ejus,And he took him from her bosom,et portavit in cœnaculum ubi ipse manebat, and he carried him to an upper room, where he himself was staying.et posuit super lectulum suum. And he placed him on his own bed.

Et clamavit ad Dominum,And he cried out to the Lord,et dixit:and he said,Domine Deus meus,“O Lord, my God,etiam ne viduam apud quam ego utcumque sustentor, have you even afflicted the widow by whom I am, in a sense, afflixisti ut interficeres filium ejus?sustained, so that you would put to death her son?”

Et expandit se,And he stretched himself out beside the boy three times.atque mensus est super puerum tribus vicibus,And he cried out to the Lordet clamavit ad Dominum, and said,et ait:“O Lord,Domine Deus meus,my God,revertatur, let the soul of this boy, obsecro,I beg you, anima pueri hujus in viscera ejus.return to his body.”

Et exaudivit Dominus vocem Eliæ:And the Lord heeded the voice of Elijah.et reversa est anima pueri intra eum,And the soul of the boy returned to him,et revixit.and he revived.

Tulitque Elias puerum,And Elijah took the boy,et deposuit eum de cœnaculo in inferiorem domum, and he brought him down from the upper room to the lower part of the house.et tradidit matri suæ,And he gave him to his mother.et ait illi:And he said to her,En vivit filius tuus.“See, your son lives.”

Dixitque mulier ad Eliam:And the woman said to Elijah:Nunc in isto cognovi quoniam vir Dei es tu,“By this, I now realize that you are a man of God,et verbum Domini in ore tuo verum est.and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.”
