1Transierunt igitur tres anni absque bello inter Syriam et Israël.Then three years passed without war between Syria and Israel.
2In anno autem tertio,But in the third year,descendit Josaphat rex Juda ad regem Israël.Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, descended to the king of Israel.
3(Dixitque rex Israël ad servos suos:And the king of Israel said to his servants,Ignoratis quod nostra sit Ramoth Galaad,“Are you ignorant that Ramoth Gilead is ours,et negligimus tollere eam de manu regis Syriæ?)and that we have neglected to take it from the hand of the king of Syria?”
4Et ait ad Josaphat:And so he said to Jehoshaphat,Veniesne mecum ad præliandum in Ramoth Galaad?“Will you come to the battle with me at Ramoth Gilead?”
5Dixitque Josaphat ad regem Israël:And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel:Sicut ego sum, ita et tu:“As I am, so also are you.populus meus et populus tuus unum sunt:My people and your people are one.et equites mei, equites tui.And my horsemen are your horsemen.”Dixitque Josaphat ad regem Israël:And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,Quære, oro te, hodie sermonem Domini.“I beg you to inquire today of the word of the Lord.”
6Congregavit ergo rex Israël prophetas,Therefore, the king of Israel gathered together the prophets,quadringentos circiter viros,about four hundred men,et ait ad eos:and he said to them,Ire debeo in Ramoth Galaad ad bellandum, an quiescere?“Should I go to Ramoth Gilead to make war, or should I be at peace?”Qui responderunt:They responded, “Ascend,Ascende, et dabit eam Dominus in manu regis.and the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.”
7Dixit autem Josaphat:Then Jehoshaphat said,Non est hic propheta Domini quispiam,“Is there not here a particular prophet of the Lord,ut interrogemus per eum?so that we may inquire by him?”
8Et ait rex Israël ad Josaphat:And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat:Remansit vir unus per quem possumus interrogare Dominum:“One man remains, by whom we may be able to inquire of the Lord: Micaiah,sed ego odi eum,the son of Imlah.quia non prophetat mihi bonum, sed malum:But I hate him. For he does not prophecy good to me,Michæas filius Jemla.but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,Cui Josaphat ait: Ne loquaris ita,“You should not speak in this way,rex.O king.”
9Vocavit ergo rex Israël eunuchum quemdam,Therefore, the king of Israel called a certain eunuch,et dixit ei:and he said to him,Festina adducere Michæam filium Jemla.“Hurry to bring here Micaiah, the son of Imlah.”
10Rex autem Israël,Now the king of Israel,et Josaphat rex Juda,and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah,sedebant unusquisque in solio suo, vestiti cultu regio,were each sitting upon his own throne, clothed in the habit of royal vestments,in area juxta ostium portæ Samariæ: et universi prophetæ prophetabant in conspectu eorum.in a courtyard beside the entrance of the gate of Samaria. And all the prophets were prophesying in their sight.
11Fecit quoque sibi Sedecias filius Chanaana cornua ferrea, et ait: Hæc dicit Dominus: His ventilabis Syriam, donec deleas eam.Also, Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, made for himself horns of iron, and he said, “Thus says the Lord: With these, you shall threaten Syria, until you destroy it.”
12Omnesque prophetæ similiter prophetabant,And all the prophets were prophesying similarly,dicentes:saying:Ascende in Ramoth Galaad,“Ascend to Ramoth Gilead,et vade prospere,and go forth to success.et tradet Dominus in manus regis.For the Lord will deliver it into the hands of the king.”
13Nuntius vero qui ierat ut vocaret Michæam,Then truly, the messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah spoke to him, saying:locutus est ad eum, dicens:“Behold, the words of the prophets,Ecce sermones prophetarum ore uno regi bona prædicant:as if with one mouth, are predicting good to the king.sit ergo sermo tuus similis eorum,Therefore, let your word be like theirs,et loquere bona.and speak what is good.”
14Cui Michæas ait:But Micaiah said to him,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,quia quodcumque dixerit mihi Dominus,whatever the Lord will have said to me,hoc loquar.this shall I speak.”
15Venit itaque ad regem,And so he went to the king.et ait illi rex:And the king said to him,Michæa,“Micaiah,ire debemus in Ramoth Galaad ad præliandum,should we go to Ramoth Gilead to do battle,an cessare?or should we cease?”Cui ille respondit:And he responded to him,Ascende,“Ascend,et vade prospere,and go forth to success,et tradet eam Dominus in manus regis.and the Lord will deliver it into the hands of the king.”
16Dixit autem rex ad eum:But the king said to him,Iterum“I require you under oath,atque iterum adjuro te,again and again,ut non loquaris mihi nisi quod verum est,that you not say to me anything except what is true,in nomine Domini.in the name of the Lord.”
17Et ille ait:And he said:Vidi cunctum Israël dispersum in montibus,“I saw all of Israel scattered among the hills,quasi oves non habentes pastorem.like sheep that have no shepherd.Et ait Dominus:And the Lord said:Non habent isti dominum:‘These have no master.revertatur unusquisque in domum suam in pace.Let each of them return to his own house in peace.’”
18(Dixit ergo rex Israël ad Josaphat:Therefore,Numquid non dixi tibi,the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat:quia non prophetat mihi bonum,“Did I not tell you that he prophesies nothing good to me,sed semper malum?)but always evil?”
19Ille vero addens,Yet truly, continuing,ait:he said:Propterea audi sermonem Domini:“Because of his, listen to the word of the Lord.vidi Dominum sedentem super solium suum,I saw the Lord sitting upon his throne.et omnem exercitum cæli assistentem ei a dextris et a sinistris:And the entire army of heaven was standing beside him, to the right and to the left.
20et ait Dominus:And the Lord said,Quis decipiet Achab regem Israël,‘Who will mislead Ahab,ut ascendat,the king of Israel,et cadat in Ramoth Galaad?so that he may ascend and fall at Ramoth Gilead?’Et dixit unus verba hujuscemodi,And one spoke words in this manner,et alius aliter.and another spoke otherwise.
21Egressus est autem spiritus,But then a spirit went outet stetit coram Domino,and stood before the Lord.et ait:And he said,Ego decipiam illum.‘I will mislead him.’Cui locutus est Dominus:And the Lord said to him,In quo?‘By what means?’
22Et ille ait:And he said,Egrediar,‘I will go forth,et ero spiritus mendax in ore omnium prophetarum ejus.and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’Et dixit Dominus:And the Lord said:Decipies,‘You will deceive him,et prævalebis:and you will prevail.egredere,Go forth,et fac ita.and do so.’
23Nunc igitur ecce dedit Dominus spiritum mendacii in ore omnium prophetarum tuorum,So now, behold: the Lord has given a lying spirit into the mouth of all your prophets who are here.qui hic sunt, et Dominus locutus est contra te malum.And the Lord has spoken evil against you.”
24Accessit autem Sedecias filius Chanaana,Then Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah,et percussit Michæam in maxillam,drew near and struck Micaiah on the jaw,et dixit:and he said,Mene ergo dimisit spiritus Domini,“So then, has the Spirit of the Lord left me,et locutus est tibi?and spoken to you?”
25Et ait Michæas:And Micaiah said,Visurus es in die illa quando ingredieris cubiculum intra cubiculum ut abscondaris.“You shall see in the day when you will enter into a room within a room, so that you may conceal yourself.”
26Et ait rex Israël: Tollite Michæam,And the king of Israel said: “Take Micaiah,et maneat apud Amon principem civitatis,and let him dwell with Amon, the ruler of the city,et apud Joas filium Amelech,and with Joash, the son of Amalech.
27et dicite eis:And tell them:Hæc dicit rex:‘Thus says the king:Mittite virum istum in carcerem,Put this man in prison,et sustentate eum pane tribulationis,and sustain him with the bread of affliction,et aqua angustiæ,and with the water of distress,donec revertar in pace.until I return in peace.’”
28Dixitque Michæas:And Micaiah said,Si reversus fueris in pace,“If you will have returned in peace,non est locutus in me Dominus.the Lord has not spoken through me.”Et ait:And he said,Audite, populi omnes.“May all the people hear it.”
29Ascendit itaque rex Israël,And so, the king of Israel,et Josaphat rex Juda,and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah,in Ramoth Galaad.ascended to Ramoth Gilead.
30Dixit itaque rex Israël ad Josaphat:Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat:Sume arma,“Take up your armor,et ingredere prælium,and enter the battle.et induere vestibus tuis.And be clothed in your own garments.”Porro rex Israël mutavit habitum suum,But the king of Israel changed his clothing,et ingressus est bellum.and he entered the war.
31Rex autem Syriæ præceperat principibus curruum triginta duobus,Now the king of Syria had instructed the thirty-two commanders of the chariots,dicens:saying,Non pugnabitis contra minorem“You shall not fight against anyone,et majorem quempiam,small or great,nisi contra regem Israël solum.except against the king of Israel alone.”
32Cum ergo vidissent principes curruum Josaphat,Therefore, when the commanders of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat,suspicati sunt quod ipse esset rex Israël,they suspected that he was the king of Israel.et impetu facto pugnabant contra eum:And making a violent assault, they fought against him.et exclamavit Josaphat.And Jehoshaphat cried out.
33Intellexeruntque principes curruum quod non esset rex Israël,And the commanders of the chariots understood that he was not the king of Israel,et cessaverunt ab eo.and so they turned away from him.
34Vir autem quidam tetendit arcum,But a certain man bent his bow,in incertum sagittam dirigens,aiming the arrow without certitude,et casu percussit regem Israël inter pulmonemand by chance he struck the king of Israel,et stomachum.between the lungs and the stomach.At ille dixit aurigæ suo:Then he said to the driver of his chariot,Verte manum tuam,“Turn your hand,et ejice me de exercitu,and carry me away from the army,quia graviter vulneratus sum.for I have been grievously wounded.”
35Commissum est ergo prælium in die illa,Then the battle was undertaken throughout that day.et rex Israël stabat in curru suo contra Syros,And the king of Israel was standing on his chariot opposite the Syrians,et mortuus est vespere:and he died in the evening.fluebat autem sanguis plagæ in sinum currus,For the blood was flowing from the wound into the joints of the chariot.
36et præco insonuit in universo exercitu antequam sol occumberet,And a herald proclaimed throughout the entire army, before the setting of the sun,dicens:saying:Unusquisque revertatur in civitatem,“Let each one return to his own city,et in terram suam.and to his own land.”
37Mortuus est autem rex,Then the king died,et perlatus est in Samariam:and he was carried into Samaria.sepelieruntque regem in Samaria,And they buried the king in Samaria.
38et laverunt currum ejus in piscina Samariæ:And they washed his chariot in the pool of Samaria.et linxerunt canes sanguinem ejus,And the dogs licked up his blood.et habenas laverunt,And they washed the reins,juxta verbum Domini quod locutus fuerat.in accord with the word of the Lord which he had spoken.
39Reliqua autem sermonum Achab,But the rest of the words of Ahab,et universa quæ fecit,and all that he did,et domus eburnea quam ædificavit,and the house of ivory that he built,cunctarumque urbium quas exstruxit,and all the cities that he constructed,nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
40Dormivit ergo Achab cum patribus suis,And so, Ahab slept with his fathers.et regnavit Ochozias filius ejus pro eo.And Ahaziah, his son, reigned in his place.
41Josaphat vero filius Asa regnare cœperat super Judam anno quarto Achab regis Israël.Yet truly, Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, had begun to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab, the king of Israel.
42Triginta quinque annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset,He was thirty-five years old when he had begun to reign,et viginti quinque annis regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Azuba filia Salai.The name of his mother was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.
43Et ambulavit in omni via Asa patris sui,And he walked in the entire way of Asa, his father,et non declinavit ex ea:and he did not decline from it.fecitque quod rectum erat in conspectu Domini.And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord.
44Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit:Yet truly,adhuc enim populus sacrificabat,he did not take away the high places.et adolebat incensum in excelsis.For still the people were sacrificing and burning incense in the high places.
45Pacemque habuit Josaphat cum rege Israël.And Jehoshaphat had peace with the king of Israel.
46Reliqua autem verborum Josaphat,But the rest of the words of Jehoshaphat,et opera ejus quæ gessit,and his works that he did,et prælia,and the battles,nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda?were these not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?
47Sed et reliquias effeminatorum qui remanserant in diebus Asa patris ejus, abstulit de terra.Then, too, the remnant of the effeminate, who had remained in the days of Asa, his father, he took away from the land.
48Nec erat tunc rex constitutus in Edom.At that time, there was no king appointed in Idumea.
49Rex vero Josaphat fecerat classes in mari,Yet truly, king Jehoshaphat had made a navy on the sea,quæ navigarent in Ophir propter aurum:which would sail to Ophir for gold.et ire non potuerunt,But they were unable to go,quia confractæ sunt in Asiongaber.because the ships were broken down at Eziongeber.
50Tunc ait Ochozias filius Achab ad Josaphat:Then Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, said to Jehoshaphat,Vadant servi mei cum servis tuis in navibus.“Let my servants go with your servants on the ships.”Et noluit Josaphat.But Jehoshaphat was not willing.
51Dormivitque Josaphat cum patribus suis,And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers,et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui:and he was buried with them in the city of David, his father.regnavitque Joram filius ejus pro eo.And Jehoram, his son, reigned in his place.
52Ochozias autem filius Achab regnare cœperat super Israël in Samaria,Then Ahaziah, the son of Ahab, began to reign over Israel,anno septimodecimo Josaphat regis Juda:in Samaria, in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat,regnavitque super Israël duobus annis.the king of Judah. And he reigned over Israel for two years.
53Et fecit malum in conspectu Domini,And he did evil in the sight of the Lord.et ambulavit in via patris suiAnd he walked in the way of his father and his mother,et matris suæ,and in the way of Jeroboam,et in via Jeroboam filii Nabat,the son of Nebat,qui peccare fecit Israël.who caused Israel to sin.
54Servivit quoque Baal,Also, he served Baal,et adoravit eum,and he adored him,et irritavit Dominum Deum Israël,and he provoked the Lord, the God of Israel,juxta omnia quæ fecerat pater ejus.in accord with all that his father had done.
