Prævaricatus est autem Moab in Israël,Then, after the death of Ahab, postquam mortuus est Achab.Moab transgressed against Israel.
Ceciditque Ochozias per cancellos cœnaculi sui,And Ahaziah fell down through the lattices of his upper room, quod habebat in Samaria, which he had in Samaria,et ægrotavit:and he was injured.misitque nuntios,And he sent messengers, dicens ad eos:saying to them,Ite,“Go,consulite Beelzebub deum Accaron, consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron, utrum vivere queam de infirmitate mea hac.as to whether I may be able to survive this infirmity of mine.”
Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Eliam Thesbiten,And an Angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah, the Tishbite, dicens:saying:Surge,“Rise up,et ascende in occursum nuntiorum regis Samariæ,and ascend to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria.et dices ad eos: Numquid non est Deus in Israël,And you shall say to them: ‘Is there not a God in Israel,ut eatis ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron?so that you would go to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron?
Quam ob rem hæc dicit Dominus:For this reason, thus says the Lord:De lectulo, super quem ascendisti,From the bed to which you have ascended, non descendes, you shall not descend.sed morte morieris.Instead, dying you shall die.’”Et abiit Elias. And Elijah went away.
Reversique sunt nuntii ad Ochoziam. And the messengers returned to Ahaziah.Qui dixit eis:And he said to them,Quare reversi estis?“Why have you returned?”
At illi responderunt ei:But they responded to him:Vir occurrit nobis,“A man met us,et dixit ad nos:and he said to us:Ite,‘Go,et revertimini ad regem qui misit vos, et dicetis ei:and return to the king who sent you. And you shall say to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Numquid quia non erat Deus in Israël, mittis ut consulatur Beelzebub deus Accaron? Is it because there was no God in Israel that you are sending to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron?idcirco de lectulo, super quem ascendisti,Therefore, from the bed to which you have ascended, non descendes, you shall not descend.sed morte morieris.Instead, dying you shall die.’”
Qui dixit eis:And he said to them:Cujus figuræ et habitus est vir ille,“What was the appearance and dress of that man,qui occurrit vobis, et locutus est verba hæc?who met you and who spoke these words?”
At illi dixerunt:So they said,Vir pilosus,“A hairy man,et zona pellicea accinctus renibus.with a belt of leather wrapping his waist.”Qui ait:And he said,Elias Thesbites est.“It is Elijah, the Tishbite.”
Misitque ad eum quinquagenarium principem,And he sent to him a leader of fifty,et quinquaginta qui erant sub eo.with the fifty who were under him.Qui ascendit ad eum:And he ascended to him, sedentique in vertice montis, sitting at the top of a hill, ait:and he said,Homo Dei,“Man of God,rex præcepit ut descendas.the king commanded that you should descend.”
Respondensque Elias,And responding, dixit quinquagenario:Elijah said to the leader of fifty,Si homo Dei sum,“If I am a man of God,descendat ignis de cælo,let fire from heaven descendet devoret te,and devour youet quinquaginta tuos.and your fifty.”Descendit itaque ignis de cælo,And then fire from heaven descendedet devoravit eum,and devoured himet quinquaginta qui erant cum eo.and the fifty who were with him.
Rursumque misit ad eum principem quinquagenarium alterum,And again, he sent to him another leader of fifty,et quinquaginta cum eo.and the fifty with him.Qui locutus est illi:And he said to him,Homo Dei,“Man of God,hæc dicit rex: Festina, thus says the king: Hurry,descende.descend.”
Respondens Elias,Responding, ait:Elijah said,Si homo Dei ego sum,“If I am a man of God,descendat ignis de cælo,let fire from heaven descendet devoret te,and devour youet quinquaginta tuos.and your fifty.”Descendit ergo ignis de cælo,And fire from heaven descendedet devoravit illum, and devoured himet quinquaginta ejus.and his fifty.
Iterum misit principem quinquagenarium tertium, et quinquaginta qui erant cum eo.Again, he sent a third leader of fifty men and the fifty who were with him.Qui cum venisset,And when he had arrived, curvavit genua contra Eliam,he bent his knees before Elijah,et precatus est eum,and he pleaded with him,et ait:and said:Homo Dei,“Man of God,noli despicere animam meam, et animas servorum tuorum qui mecum sunt.do not choose to despise my life and the lives of your servants who are with me.
Ecce descendit ignis de cælo, et devoravit duos principes quinquagenarios primos, et quinquagenos qui cum eis erant: sed nunc obsecro ut miserearis animæ meæ.Behold, fire from heaven descended and devoured the two previous leaders of fifty and the fifties who were with them. But now I beg you to take pity on my life.”
Locutus est autem angelus Domini ad Eliam,Then the Angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah, dicens:saying,Descende cum eo:“Descend with him;ne timeas.fear not.”Surrexit igitur,And so,et descendit cum eo ad regem,he arose and descended with him to the king.
et locutus est ei:And he said to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Quia misisti nuntios ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron,Because you sent messengers to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron, quasi non esset Deus in Israël a quo posses interrogare sermonem,as if there were no God in Israel, from whom you would be able to seek a word, ideo de lectulo super quem ascendisti, therefore, from the bed to which you have ascended, non descendes, you shall not descend.sed morte morieris.Instead, dying you shall die.”
Mortuus est ergo juxta sermonem Domini quem locutus est Elias,And so he died, in accord with the word of the Lord, which Elijah spoke.et regnavit Joram frater ejus pro eo,And Jehoram, his brother, reigned in his place, anno secundo Joram filii Josaphat regis Judæ:in the second year of Jehoram, the son of Jehoshaphat, non enim habebat filium.the king of Judah. For he had no son.
Reliqua autem verborum Ochoziæ quæ operatus est,But the rest of the words of Ahaziah that he worked, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
