Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri servos suos ad Salomonem:Hiram, the king of Tyre, also sent his servants to Solomon.audivit enim quod ipsum unxissent regem pro patre ejus:For he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father.quia amicus fuerat Hiram David omni tempore. Now Hiram had been a friend to David the entire time.

Misit autem Salomon ad Hiram,Then Solomon sent to Hiram, dicens:saying:

Tu scis voluntatem David patris mei,“You know the will of my father David,et quia non potuerit ædificare domum nomini Domini Dei sui propter bella imminentia per circuitum, and that he was not able to build a house to the name of the Lord his God, because of the wars that were imminent all around him, donec daret Dominus eos sub vestigio pedum ejus.until the Lord set them under the steps of his feet.

Nunc autem requiem dedit Dominus Deus meus mihi per circuitum,But now the Lord my God has given rest to me on all sides.et non est satan,And there is no adversary, neque occursus malus.nor occurrence of evil.

Quam ob rem cogito ædificare templum nomini Domini Dei mei,For this reason, I intend to build a temple to the name of the Lord my God,sicut locutus est Dominus David patri meo, just as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying:dicens:‘Your son,Filius tuus, quem dabo pro te super solium tuum, whom I will set in your place, upon your throne, ipse ædificabit domum nomini meo.he himself shall build a house to my name.’

Præcipe igitur ut præcidant mihi servi tui cedros de Libano,Therefore, order that your servants may cut down for me cedars from Lebanon.et servi mei sint cum servis tuis:And let my servants be with your servants.mercedem autem servorum tuorum dabo tibi quamcumque petieris:Then I will give to you, for the wages of your servants, whatever you will ask.scis enim quomodo non est in populo meo vir qui noverit ligna cædere sicut Sidonii. For you know that there is not a man among my people who knows how to cut wood as well as the Sidonians.”

Cum ergo audisset Hiram verba Salomonis,Therefore, when Hiram had heard the words of Solomon,lætatus est valde,he rejoiced greatly,et ait:and he said,Benedictus Dominus Deus hodie,“Blessed be the Lord God this day,qui dedit David filium sapientissimum super populum hunc plurimum.who gave to David a very wise son over this numerous people!”

Et misit Hiram ad Salomonem,And Hiram sent to Solomon, dicens:saying:Audivi quæcumque mandasti mihi:“I have heard the things that you would entrust to me.ego faciam omnem voluntatem tuam in lignis cedrinis et abiegnis. And I will do your whole will concerning the cedar trees and spruce trees.

Servi mei deponent ea de Libano ad mare,My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea.et ego componam ea in ratibus in mari usque ad locum quem significaveris mihi:And I will arrange them together as rafts on the sea,et applicabo ea ibi,as far as the place that you will indicate to me.et tu tolles ea:And I will land them there,præbebisque necessaria mihi, and you will take them.ut detur cibus domui meæ.And you shall offer to me what is necessary to give food to my house.”

Itaque Hiram dabat Salomoni ligna cedrina,And so,et ligna abiegna,Hiram gave to Solomon cedar trees and spruce trees, juxta omnem voluntatem ejus.in accord with his whole will.

Salomon autem præbebat Hiram coros tritici viginti millia in cibum domui ejus,Then Solomon offered to Hiram twenty thousand cor of wheat, as food for his house,et viginti coros purissimi olei:and twenty cor of the purest oil.hæc tribuebat Salomon Hiram per singulos annos. These things Solomon gave as a tribute to Hiram every year.

Dedit quoque Dominus sapientiam Salomoni,And the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, sicut locutus est ei:just as he said to him.et erat pax inter Hiram et Salomonem,And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon,et percusserunt ambo fœdus.and the two struck a pact.

Elegitque rex Salomon operarios de omni Israël,And king Solomon chose workers from all of Israel,et erat indictio triginta millia virorum.and the conscription was of thirty thousand men.

Mittebatque eos in Libanum,And he sent them into Lebanon, decem millia per menses singulos vicissim, ten thousand each month, in turns, ita ut duobus mensibus essent in domibus suis:so that for two months they were in their own houses.et Adoniram erat super hujuscemodi indictione. And Adoniram was over this type of conscription.

Fueruntque Salomoni septuaginta millia eorum qui onera portabant,And Solomon had seventy thousand of those who were carrying burdens,et octoginta millia latomorum in monte, and eighty thousand of those who cut stones from the mountain,

absque præpositis qui præerant singulis operibus, aside from the commanders who were over each work, numero trium millium et trecentorum,in number three thousand and three hundred,præcipientium populo et his qui faciebant opus.who gave orders to the people and to those who were doing the work.

Præcepitque rex ut tollerent lapides grandes,And the king ordered them to bring great stones, lapides pretiosos in fundamentum templi, precious stones, for the foundation of the temple,et quadrarent eos:and to square them.

quos dolaverunt cæmentarii Salomonis et cæmentarii Hiram:And these were shaped by the stoneworkers of Solomon and the stoneworkers of Hiram.porro Giblii præparaverunt ligna et lapides ad ædificandam domum. And the men of Gebal also prepared the wood and the stones in order to build the house.
