Anno vigesimo tertio Joas filii Ochoziæ regis Juda, regnavit Joachaz filius Jehu super Israël in Samaria decem et septem annis. In the twenty-third year of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, the king of Judah, Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for seventeen years.
Et fecit malum coram Domino,And he did evil before the Lord.secutusque est peccata Jeroboam filii Nabat,And he followed the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, qui peccare fecit Israël, et non declinavit ab eis.who caused Israel to sin. And he did not turn aside from these.
Iratusque est furor Domini contra Israël,And the fury of the Lord was enraged against Israel,et tradidit eos in manu Hazaël regis Syriæ,and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael, the king of Syria,et in manu Benadad filii Hazaël,and into the hand of Benhadad, the son of Hazael, cunctis diebus.during all the days.
Deprecatus est autem Joachaz faciem Domini,But Jehoahaz petitioned the face of the Lord,et audivit eum Dominus:and the Lord heeded him.vidit enim angustiam Israël,For he saw the anguish of Israel, quia attriverat eos rex Syriæ:because the king of Syria had oppressed them.
et dedit Dominus salvatorem Israëli,And the Lord gave a savior to Israel.et liberatus est de manu regis Syriæ:And they were freed from the hand of the king of Syria.habitaveruntque filii Israël in tabernaculis suis sicut heriAnd the sons of Israel lived in their tabernacles,et nudiustertius.just as yesterday and the day before.
Verumtamen non recesserunt a peccatis domus Jeroboam,Yet truly, they did not withdraw from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, qui peccare fecit Israël,who had caused Israel to sin.sed in ipsis ambulaverunt:Instead, they walked by them.siquidem et lucus permansit in Samaria. And there was even a sacred grove still remaining in Samaria.
Et non sunt derelicti Joachaz de populo nisi quinquaginta equites,And there was left to Jehoahaz from the people nothing but fifty horsemen,et decem currus, and ten chariots,et decem millia peditum:and ten thousand foot soldiers.interfecerat enim eos rex Syriæ,For the king of Syria had killed them,et redegerat quasi pulverem in tritura areæ.and he had reduced them to become like dust on a threshing floor.
Reliqua autem sermonum Joachaz,But the rest of the words of Jehoahaz,et universa quæ fecit, and all that he did,et fortitudo ejus, and his strength, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Dormivitque Joachaz cum patribus suis,And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers,et sepelierunt eum in Samaria:and they buried him in Samaria.regnavitque Joas filius ejus pro eo.And Joash, his son, reigned in his place.
Anno trigesimo septimo Joas regis Juda, regnavit Joas filius Joachaz super Israël in Samaria sedecim annis. In the thirty-seventh year of Jehoash, the king of Judah, Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for sixteen years.
Et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini:And he did what is evil in the sight of the Lord.non declinavit ab omnibus peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat,He did not turn aside from all the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, qui peccare fecit Israël,who caused Israel to sin.sed in ipsis ambulavit.Instead, he walked by them.
Reliqua autem sermonum Joas,But the rest of the words of Joash,et universa quæ fecit, and all that he did,et fortitudo ejus, and his strength, quomodo pugnaverit contra Amasiam regem Juda, the manner in which he fought against Amaziah, the king of Judah, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Et dormivit Joas cum patribus suis:And Joash slept with his fathers.Jeroboam autem sedit super solium ejus. Then Jeroboam sat upon his throne.Porro Joas sepultus est in Samaria cum regibus Israël.And Joash was buried in Samaria, with the kings of Israel.
Eliseus autem ægrotabat infirmitate, qua et mortuus est:Now Elisha was sick of the infirmity from which he also died.descenditque ad eum Joas rex Israël,And Joash, the king of Israel, descended to him.et flebat coram eo,And he was weeping before him, dicebatque:and saying:Pater mi,“My father, pater mi,my father!currus Israël et auriga ejus. The chariot of Israel and its driver!”
Et ait illi Eliseus:And Elisha said to him,Affer arcum et sagittas.“Bring a bow and arrows.”Cumque attulisset ad eum arcum et sagittas,And when he had brought a bow and arrows to him,
dixit ad regem Israël:he said to the king of Israel,Pone manum tuam super arcum.“Place your hand upon the bow.”Et cum posuisset ille manum suam,And when he had placed his hand, superposuit Eliseus manus suas manibus regis,Elisha placed his own hands over the hands of the king.
et ait:And he said,Aperi fenestram orientalem.“Open the window toward the east.”Cumque aperuisset,And when he had opened it,dixit Eliseus:Elisha said,Jace sagittam.“Shoot an arrow.”Et jecit. And he shot it.Et ait Eliseus:And Elisha said:Sagitta salutis Domini,“It is the arrow of the salvation of the Lord,et sagitta salutis contra Syriam:and the arrow of salvation against Syria.percutiesque Syriam in Aphec,And you shall strike the Syrians at Aphek, donec consumas eam.until you consume them.”
Et ait:And he said,Tolle sagittas.“Take the arrows.”Qui cum tulisset,And when he had taken them, rursum dixit ei:he then said to him,Percute jaculo terram.“Strike an arrow against the ground.”Et cum percussisset tribus vicibus,And when he had struck three times,et stetisset, and he had stood still,
iratus est vir Dei contra eum,the man of God became angry against him.et ait:And he said:Si percussisses quinquies, aut sexies,“If you had struck five or six or seven times, sive septies, percussisses Syriam usque ad consumptionem:you would have struck down Syria, even until it was consumed.nunc autem tribus vicibus percuties eam.But now you will strike it three times.”
Mortuus est ergo Eliseus,Then Elisha died,et sepelierunt eum.and they buried him.Latrunculi autem de Moab venerunt in terram in ipso anno. And the robbers from Moab came into the land in the same year.
Quidam autem sepelientes hominem, viderunt latrunculos,But certain ones who were burying a man saw the robbers,et projecerunt cadaver in sepulchro Elisei.and they cast the dead body into the sepulcher of Elisha.Quod cum tetigisset ossa Elisei,But when it had touched the bones of Elisha, revixit homo, the man revived,et stetit super pedes suos.and he stood upon his feet.
Igitur Hazaël rex Syriæ afflixit Israël cunctis diebus Joachaz:Now Hazael, the king of Syria, afflicted Israel during all the days of Jehoahaz.
et misertus est Dominus eorum,But the Lord took pity on them,et reversus est ad eos propter pactum suum, and he returned to them, because of his covenant, quod habebat cum Abraham, which he had made with Abraham,et Isaac, and Isaac,et Jacob:and Jacob.et noluit disperdere eos,And he was not willing to destroy them, neque projicere penitus usque in præsens tempus.nor to cast them out completely, even to the present time.
Mortuus est autem Hazaël rex Syriæ,Then Hazael, the king of Syria, died.et regnavit Benadad filius ejus pro eo.And Benhadad, his son, reigned in his place.
Porro Joas filius Joachaz tulit urbes de manu Benadad filii Hazaël,Now Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, by a just war, quas tulerat de manu Joachaz patris sui jure prælii:took the cities from the hand of Benhadad, the son of Hazael, which he had taken from the hand of Jehoahaz, tribus vicibus percussit eum Joas, his father. Joash struck him three times,et reddidit civitates Israël.and he restored the cities to Israel.
