In anno secundo Joas filii Joachaz regis Israël,In the second year of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the king of Israel:regnavit Amasias filius Joas regis Juda.Amaziah, the son of Jehoash, reigned as king of Judah.
Viginti quinque annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset:He was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign.viginti autem et novem annis regnavit in Jerusalem. And he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem.Nomen matris ejus Joadan de Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem.
Et fecit rectum coram Domino,And he did what is right before the Lord, verumtamen non ut David pater ejus.yet truly, not like David, his father.Juxta omnia quæ fecit Joas pater suus, fecit:He acted in accord with all the things that his father Jehoash did,
nisi hoc tantum, except for this alone:quod excelsa non abstulit:he did not take away the high places.adhuc enim populus immolabat,For still the people were immolating,et adolebat incensum in excelsis.and burning incense, in the high places.
Cumque obtinuisset regnum,And when he had obtained the kingdom, percussit servos suos,he struck down those of his servants who had killed his father, qui interfecerant regem patrem suum:the king.
filios autem eorum qui occiderant,But the sons of those who had been killed he did not put to death, non occidit,in accord with what was written in the book of the law of Moses, juxta quod scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, just as the Lord instructed, sicut præcepit Dominus, saying:dicens:“The fathers shall not die for the sons,Non morientur patres pro filiis, and the sons shall not die for the fathers.neque filii morientur pro patribus:Instead, sed unusquisque in peccato suo morietur.each one shall die for his own sin.”
Ipse percussit Edom in valle Salinarum decem millia,He struck down ten thousand men of Idumea, in the Valley of the Salt Pits.et apprehendit petram in prælio,And he captured ‘the Rock’ in battle, vocavitque nomen ejus Jectehel usque in præsentem diem.and he called its name ‘Subdued by God,’ even to the present day.
Tunc misit Amasias nuntios ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regis Israël,Then Amaziah sent messengers to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, dicens:the king of Israel,Veni, saying:et videamus nos.“Come, and let us see one another.”
Remisitque Joas rex Israël ad Amasiam regem Juda,And Joash, the king of Israel, sent a reply to Amaziah, dicens:the king of Judah,Carduus Libani misit ad cedrum quæ est in Libano, saying: “A thistle of Lebanon sent to a cedar, which is in Lebanon, dicens:saying:Da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem.‘Give your daughter as wife to my son.’Transieruntque bestiæ saltus quæ sunt in Libano,And the beasts of the forest, which are in Lebanon,et conculcaverunt carduum.passed by and trampled the thistle.
Percutiens invaluisti super Edom,You have struck and prevailed over Idumea.et sublevavit te cor tuum:And your heart has lifted you up.contentus esto gloria,Be content with your own glory,et sede in domo tua:and be seated in your own house.quare provocas malum,Why would you provoke evil,ut cadas tuso that you would fall,et Judas tecum?and Judah with you?”
Et non acquievit Amasias. But Amaziah was not quieted. And so Joash,Ascenditque Joas rex Israël,the king of Israel, went up. And he and Amaziah,et viderunt se,the king of Judah, ipse et Amasias rex Juda, in Bethsames oppido Judæ.saw one another at Beth-shemesh, a town in Judah.
Percussusque est Juda coram Israël,And Judah was struck down before Israel,et fugerunt unusquisque in tabernacula sua.and they fled, each to their own tents.
Amasiam vero regem Juda,And truly, Joash, the king of Israel, filium Joas filii Ochoziæ,captured Amaziah, the king of Judah, cepit Joas rex Israël in Bethsames, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh.et adduxit eum in Jerusalem:And he brought him to Jerusalem.et interrupit murum Jerusalem,And he breached the wall of Jerusalem,a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli, quadringentis cubitis.from the gate of Ephraim as far as the gate of the Corner, four hundred cubits.
Tulitque omne aurum et argentum,And he took away all the gold and silver,et universa vasa quæ inventa sunt in domo Domini et in thesauris regis, and all the vessels,et obsides, which were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king,et reversus est in Samariam.and he returned to Samaria with hostages.
Reliqua autem verborum Joas quæ fecit,But the rest of the words of Joash, which he accomplished,et fortitudo ejus qua pugnavit contra Amasiam regem Juda, and his strength, with which he fought against Amaziah, the king of Judah, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Dormivitque Joas cum patribus suis,And Joash slept with his fathers,et sepultus est in Samaria cum regibus Israël,and he was buried in Samaria, with the kings of Israel.et regnavit Jeroboam filius ejus pro eo.And Jeroboam, his son, reigned in his place.
Vixit autem Amasias filius Joas rex Juda postquam mortuus est Joas filius Joachaz regis Israël, quindecim annis. Now Amaziah, the son of Jehoash, the king of Judah, lived for fifteen years after the death of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the king of Israel.
Reliqua autem sermonum Amasiæ,And the rest of the words of Amaziah, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Juda?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?
Factaque est contra eum conjuratio in Jerusalem:And they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem.at ille fugit in Lachis. And he fled to Lachish.Miseruntque post eum in Lachis,And they sent after him, to Lachish,et interfecerunt eum ibi:and they killed him there.
et asportaverunt in equis,And they carried him away on horses.sepultusque est in Jerusalem cum patribus suis in civitate David. And he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers, in the city of David.
Tulit autem universus populus Judæ Azariam annos natum sedecim,Then all the people of Judah took Azariah, at sixteen years from birth,et constituerunt eum regem pro patre ejus Amasia.and they appointed him as king in place of his father, Amaziah.
Ipse ædificavit Ælath,He built up Elath,et restituit eam Judæ,and he restored it to Judah, postquam dormivit rex cum patribus suis.after which the king slept with his fathers.
Anno quintodecimo Amasiæ filii Joas regis Juda, regnavit Jeroboam filius Joas regis Israël in Samaria, quadraginta et uno anno.In the fifteenth year of Amaziah, the son of Jehoash, the king of Judah: Jeroboam, the son of Joash, the king of Israel, reigned, in Samaria, for forty-one years.
Et fecit quod malum est coram Domino:And he did what is evil before the Lord.non recessit ab omnibus peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat,He did not withdraw from all the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, qui peccare fecit Israël.who caused Israel to sin.
Ipse restituit terminos Israël ab introitu Emath usque ad mare solitudinis, juxta sermonem Domini Dei Israël quem locutus est per servum suum Jonam filium Amathi prophetam, qui erat de Geth, quæ est in Opher. He restored the borders of Israel, from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Sea of the Wilderness, in accord with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke through his servant, the prophet Jonah, the son of Amittai, who was from Gath, which is in Hepher.
Vidit enim Dominus afflictionem Israël amaram nimis,For the Lord saw the exceedingly bitter affliction of Israel,et quod consumpti essent usque ad clausos carcere et extremos, and that they were being consumed, even to those who were enclosed in prison, and even to the least ones,et non esset qui auxiliaretur Israëli.and that there was no one who would help Israel.
Nec locutus est Dominus ut deleret nomen Israël de sub cælo,But the Lord did not say that he would wipe away the name of Israel from under heaven.sed salvavit eos in manu Jeroboam filii Joas.So instead, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam, the son of Joash.
Reliqua autem sermonum Jeroboam,But the rest of the words of Jeroboam,et universa quæ fecit, and all that he did,et fortitudo ejus qua præliatus est,and his strength, with which he went to battle,et quomodo restituit Damascum et Emath Judæ in Israël,and the manner in which he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah, in Israel, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Dormivitque Jeroboam cum patribus suis regibus Israël,And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, the kings of Israel.et regnavit Zacharias filius ejus pro eo.And Zechariah, his son, reigned in his place.
