Anno decimoseptimo Phacee filii Romeliæ,In the seventeenth year of Pekah, the son of Remaliah:regnavit Achaz filius Joatham regis Juda.Ahaz, the son of Jotham, reigned as king of Judah.
Viginti annorum erat Achaz cum regnare cœpisset,Ahaz was twenty years old when he had begun to reign,et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem.and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem.Non fecit quod erat placitum in conspectu Domini Dei sui sicut David pater ejus,He did not do what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord, his God, as his father David did.
sed ambulavit in via regum Israël:Instead, he walked in the way of the kings of Israel.insuper et filium suum consecravit,Moreover, he even consecrated his son, transferens per ignem secundum idola gentium, quæ dissipavit Dominus coram filiis Israël.making him pass through fire, in accord with the idols of the nations that the Lord destroyed before the sons of Israel.
Immolabat quoque victimas,Also, he was immolating victims,et adolebat incensum in excelsis, and burning incense, in the high places,et in collibus, and on the hills,et sub omni ligno frondoso.and under every leafy tree.
Tunc ascendit Rasin rex Syriæ,Then Rezin, the king of Syria, and Pekah,et Phacee filius Romeliæ rex Israël,the son of Remaliah, the king of Israel,in Jerusalem ad præliandum: cumque obsiderent Achaz, ascended to do battle against Jerusalem. And they besieged Ahaz, non valuerunt superare eum.but they were not able to overcome him.
In tempore illo restituit Rasin rex Syriæ,At that time, Rezin, the king of Syria,Ailam Syriæ, et ejecit Judæos de Aila:restored Elath to Syria, and he expelled the Judeans from Elath.et Idumæi venerunt in Ailam,And the Idumeans went into Elath,et habitaverunt ibi usque in diem hanc.and they have lived there, even to this day.
Misit autem Achaz nuntios ad Theglathphalasar regem Assyriorum,Then Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser,dicens:the king of the Assyrians,Servus tuus, saying:et filius tuus ego sum:“I am your servant, ascende, and I am your son.et salvum me fac de manu regis Syriæ,Ascend and accomplish my salvation from the hand of the king of Syria,et de manu regis Israël,and from the hand of the king of Israel, qui consurrexerunt adversum me.who have risen up together against me.”
Et cum collegisset argentum et aurum quod inveniri potuit in domo Domini et in thesauris regis,And when he had collected the silver and the gold that could be found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the king, misit regi Assyriorum munera.he sent it as a gift to the king of the Assyrians.
Qui et acquievit voluntati ejus:And he agreed to his will.ascendit enim rex Assyriorum in Damascum,For the king of the Assyrians ascended against Damascus,et vastavit eam,and he laid waste to it.et transtulit habitatores ejus Cyrenen:And he carried away its inhabitants to Cyrene.Rasin autem interfecit. But Rezin he killed.
Perrexitque rex Achaz in occursum Theglathphalasar regis Assyriorum in Damascum:And king Ahaz traveled to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser, the king of the Assyrians.cumque vidisset altare Damasci,And when he had seen the altar of Damascus, misit rex Achaz ad Uriam sacerdotem exemplar ejus, king Ahaz sent to Uriah, the priest, its pattern and likeness,et similitudinem juxta omne opus ejus.according to all of its work.
Exstruxitque Urias sacerdos altare: juxta omnia quæ præceperat rex Achaz de Damasco, ita fecit sacerdos Urias donec veniret rex Achaz de Damasco. And Uriah, the priest, constructed an altar in accord with all that king Ahaz had commanded from Damascus. Uriah, the priest, did so, until king Ahaz arrived from Damascus.
Cumque venisset rex de Damasco,And when the king had arrived from Damascus, vidit altare,he saw the altar,et veneratus est illud:and he venerated it.ascenditque et immolavit holocausta et sacrificium suum,And he went up and immolated holocausts, with his own sacrifice.
et libavit libamina,And he offered libations,et fudit sanguinem pacificorum quæ obtulerat super altare.and he poured out the blood of the peace offerings, which he had offered, upon the altar.
Porro altare æreum quod erat coram Domino,But the altar of brass, which was before the Lord, transtulit de facie templi,he took away from the face of the temple,et de loco altaris, and from the place of the altar,et de loco templi Domini:and from the place of the temple of the Lord.posuitque illud ex latere altaris ad aquilonem. And he positioned it at the side of the altar, toward the north.
Præcepit quoque rex Achaz Uriæ sacerdoti,Also, king Ahaz instructed Uriah, the priest, dicens:saying:Super altare majus offer holocaustum matutinum,“Upon the great altar, offer the morning holocaust,et sacrificium vespertinum, and the evening sacrifice,et holocaustum regis, et sacrificium ejus, and the holocaust of the king, and his sacrifice,et holocaustum universi populi terræ,and the holocaust of the entire people of the land,et sacrificia eorum, and their sacrifices.et libamina eorum:But their libations,et omnem sanguinem holocausti, and all the blood of the holocaust,et universum sanguinem victimæ super illud effundes:and all the blood of the victim, you shall pour out upon it.altare vero æreum erit paratum ad voluntatem meam. Then truly, the altar of brass shall be prepared for use at my will.”
Fecit igitur Urias sacerdos juxta omnia quæ præceperat rex Achaz. And so Uriah, the priest, acted in accord with all that king Ahaz had instructed to him.
Tulit autem rex Achaz cælatas bases,Then king Ahaz took away the engraved bases,et luterem qui erat desuper:and the basin that was upon them.et mare deposuit de bobus æreis qui sustentabant illud,And he took down the sea from the bronze oxen, which were holding it up.et posuit super pavimentum stratum lapide. And he positioned it upon a layer of pavement stone.
Musach quoque sabbati quod ædificaverat in templo:Also, the canopy for the Sabbath, which he had built in the temple,et ingressum regis exterius convertit in templum Domini propter regem Assyriorum.and the exterior entrance of the king, he converted into the temple of the Lord, because of the king of the Assyrians.
Reliqua autem verborum Achaz quæ fecit,Now the rest of the words of Ahaz that he did, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Juda?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?
Dormivitque Achaz cum patribus suis,And Ahaz slept with his fathers,et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David:and he was buried with them in the city of David.et regnavit Ezechias filius ejus pro eo.And Hezekiah, his son, reigned in his place.
