Anno duodecimo Achaz regis Juda, regnavit Osee filius Ela in Samaria super Israël novem annis. In the twelfth year of Ahaz, the king of Judah: Hoshea, the son of Elah, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, for nine years.

Fecitque malum coram Domino,And he did evil before the Lord, sed non sicut reges Israël qui ante eum fuerant.but not like the kings of Israel who had been before him.

Contra hunc ascendit Salmanasar rex Assyriorum,Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, ascended against him.et factus est ei Osee servus,And Hoshea became a servant to him, reddebatque illi tributa.and he paid him tribute.

Cumque deprehendisset rex Assyriorum Osee,And when the king of the Assyrians discovered that Hoshea, striving to rebel, had sent messengers to Sais, quod rebellare nitens misisset nuntios ad Sua regem Ægypti ne præstaret tributa regi Assyriorum sicut singulis annis solitus erat,to the king of Egypt, so as not to present the tribute to the king of the Assyrians, as he had been accustomed to do each year, obsedit eum,he besieged him.et vinctum misit in carcerem. And having been bound, he cast him into prison.

Pervagatusque est omnem terram:And he wandered through the entire land.et ascendens Samariam,And ascending to Samaria, obsedit eam tribus annis.he besieged it for three years.

Anno autem nono Osee,And in the ninth year of Hoshea, cepit rex Assyriorum Samariam, the king of the Assyrians captured Samaria,et transtulit Israël in Assyrios:and he carried away Israel to Assyria.posuitque eos in HalaAnd he stationed them in Halah and in Habor,et in Habor juxta fluvium Gozan, beside the river of Gozan,in civitatibus Medorum.in the cities of the Medes.

Factum est enim,For it happened that, cum peccassent filii Israël Domino Deo suo, when the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord, their God,qui eduxerat eos de terra Ægypti, who had led them away from the land of Egypt,de manu Pharaonis regis Ægypti, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, coluerunt deos alienos.they worshipped strange gods.

Et ambulaverunt juxta ritum gentium quas consumpserat Dominus in conspectu filiorum IsraëlAnd they walked according to the rituals of the nations that the Lord had consumed in the sight of the sons of Israel,et regum Israël,and of the kings of Israel.quia similiter fecerant. For they had acted similarly.

Et offenderunt filii Israël verbis non rectis Dominum Deum suum:And the sons of Israel offended the Lord, their God, with deeds that were not upright.et ædificaverunt sibi excelsa in cunctis urbibus suis,And they built for themselves high places in all their cities,a turre custodum usque ad civitatem munitam.from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

Feceruntque sibi statuas et lucos in omni colle sublimi,And they made for themselves statues and sacred groves,et subter omne lignum nemorosum:on every high hill and under every leafy tree.

et adolebant ibi incensum super aras in morem gentium quas transtulerat Dominus a facie eorum:And they were burning incense there, upon altars, in the manner of the nations that the Lord had removed from their face.feceruntque verba pessima irritantes Dominum. And they did wicked deeds, provoking the Lord.

Et coluerunt immunditias de quibus præcepit eis Dominus ne facerent verbum hoc.And they worshipped impurities, concerning which the Lord instructed them that they should not do this word.

Et testificatus est Dominus in Israël et in Juda per manum omnium prophetarum et videntium,And the Lord testified to them, in Israel and in Judah, through the hand of all the prophets and seers, dicens:saying:Revertimini a viis vestris pessimis,“Return from your wicked ways,et custodite præcepta mea et cæremonias, and keep my precepts and ceremonies, juxta omnem legem quam præcepi patribus vestris,in accord with the entire law, which I instructed to your fathers,et sicut misi ad vos in manu servorum meorum prophetarum.and just as I sent to you by the hand of my servants, the prophets.”

Qui non audierunt,But they did not listen.sed induraverunt cervicem suam juxta cervicem patrum suorum,Instead, they hardened their necks to be like the neck of their fathers, qui noluerunt obedire Domino Deo suo.who were not willing to obey the Lord, their God.

Et abjecerunt legitima ejus,And they cast aside his ordinances,et pactum quod pepigit cum patribus eorum, and the covenant that he formed with their fathers,et testificationes quibus contestatus est eos:and the testimonies which he testified to them.secutique sunt vanitates,And they pursued vanities and acted vainly.et vane egerunt:And they followed the nations that were all around them,et secuti sunt gentes quæ erant per circuitum eorum, concerning the things which the Lord had commanded them not to do,super quibus præceperat Dominus eis ut non facerent sicut et illæ faciebant.and which they did.

Et dereliquerunt omnia præcepta Domini Dei sui:And they abandoned all the precepts of the Lord, feceruntque sibi conflatiles duos vitulos, their God.et lucos,And they made for themselves two molten calves and sacred groves.et adoraverunt universam militiam cæli:And they adored the entire celestial army.servieruntque Baal,And they served Baal.

et consecraverunt filios suos et filias suas per ignem:And they consecrated their sons and their daughters through fire.et divinationibus inserviebant, et auguriis:And they devoted themselves to divinations and soothsaying.et tradiderunt se ut facerent malum coram Domino,And they delivered themselves into the doing of evil before the Lord,ut irritarent eum.so that they provoked him.

Iratusque est Dominus vehementer Israëli,And the Lord became vehemently angry with Israel,et abstulit eos a conspectu suo,and he took them away from his sight.et non remansit nisi tribus Juda tantummodo. And there remained no one, except the tribe of Judah alone.

Sed nec ipse Juda custodivit mandata Domini Dei sui:But even Judah did not keep the commandments of the Lord, their God.verum ambulavit in erroribus Israël,Instead, they walked in the errors of Israel, quos operatus fuerat.which they had wrought.

Projecitque Dominus omne semen Israël,And the Lord cast aside all of the offspring of Israel.et afflixit eos,And he afflicted them,et tradidit eos in manu diripientium, and he delivered them into the hand of despoilers, donec projiceret eos a facie sua:until he drove them away from his face,

ex eo jam tempore quo scissus est Israël a domo David, even from that time when Israel was torn away from the house of David,et constituerunt sibi regem Jeroboam filium Nabat:and they appointed for themselves Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, separavit enim Jeroboam Israël a Domino,as king. For Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord,et peccare eos fecit peccatum magnum.and he caused them to sin a great sin.

Et ambulaverunt filii Israël in universis peccatis Jeroboam quæ fecerat:And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam, which he had done.et non recesserunt ab eis,And they did not withdraw from these,

usquequo Dominus auferret Israël a facie sua, even when the Lord carried away Israel from his face, sicut locutus fuerat in manu omnium servorum suorum prophetarum:just as he had said by the hand of all his servants, the prophets.translatusque est Israël de terra sua in Assyrios,And Israel was carried away from their land into Assyria, usque in diem hanc.even to this day.

Adduxit autem rex Assyriorum de Babylone,Then the king of the Assyrians brought some from Babylon,et de Cutha, and from Cuthah,et de Avah, and from Avva,et de Emath, and from Hamath,et de Sepharvaim:and from Sepharvaim.et collocavit eos in civitatibus Samariæ pro filiis Israël:And he located them in the cities of Samaria, in place of the sons of Israel.qui possederunt Samariam,And they possessed Samaria,et habitaverunt in urbibus ejus.and they lived in its cities.

Cumque ibi habitare cœpissent,And when they had begun to live there, non timebant Dominum:they did not fear the Lord.et immisit in eos Dominus leones,And the Lord sent lions among them, qui interficiebant eos.which were killing them.

Nuntiatumque est regi Assyriorum,And this was reported to the king of the Assyrians,et dictum:and it was said:Gentes quas transtulisti,“The peoples that you transferred and caused to live in the cities of Samaria,et habitare fecisti in civitatibus Samariæ,they are ignorant of the ordinances of the God of the land.ignorant legitima Dei terræ:And so the Lord has sent lions among them.et immisit in eos Dominus leones,And behold,et ecce interficiunt eos, they have killed them,eo quod ignorent ritum Dei terræ.because they were ignorant of the rituals of the God of the land.”

Præcepit autem rex Assyriorum,Then the king of the Assyrians commanded, dicens:saying:Ducite illuc unum de sacerdotibus quos inde captivos adduxistis,“Lead to that place one of the priests,et vadat, whom you brought as a captive from there.et habitet cum eis:And let him go and live with them.et doceat eos legitima Dei terræ.And let him teach them the ordinances of the God of the land.”

Igitur cum venisset unus de sacerdotibus his qui captivi ducti fuerant de Samaria,And so, when one of the priests, who had been led away captive from Samaria, habitavit in Bethel, had arrived, he lived in Bethel.et docebat eos quomodo colerent Dominum. And he taught them how they should worship the Lord.

Et unaquæque gens fabricata est deum suum:And each of the nations made gods of their own, posueruntque eos in fanis excelsis quæ fecerant Samaritæ,and they placed them in the shrines of the high places, genswhich the Samaritans had made:et gens in urbibus suis, nation after nation,in quibus habitabat.in their cities in which they were living.

Viri enim Babylonii fecerunt Sochothbenoth:So the men of Babylon made Soccoth-benoth;viri autem Cuthæi fecerunt Nergel:and the men of Cuth made Nergal;et viri de Emath fecerunt Asima.and the men of Hamath made Ashima;

Porro Hevæi fecerunt Nebahaz et Tharthac.and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak.Hi autem qui erant de Sepharvaim,Then those who were from Sepharvaim burned up their children with fire, comburebant filios suos igni, for the gods of Sepharvaim:Adramelech et Anamelech diis Sepharvaim,Adram-melech and Anam-melech.

et nihilominus colebant Dominum. But nevertheless, they worshipped the Lord.Fecerunt autem sibi de novissimis sacerdotes excelsorum,Then they made for themselves, from the least of the people, priests of the high places.et ponebant eos in fanis sublimibus. And they placed them in the shrines of the high places.

Et cum Dominum colerent,And though they worshipped the Lord, diis quoque suis serviebant juxta consuetudinem gentium, they also served their own gods,de quibus translati fuerant Samariam.according to the custom of the nations from which they had been transferred into Samaria.

Usque in præsentem diem morem sequuntur antiquum:Even to the present day, they follow the ancient customs;non timent Dominum, they do not fear the Lord, neque custodiunt cæremonias ejus, and they do not keep his ceremonies, judicia, et legem, and judgments, and law,et mandatum, and commandment, quod præceperat Dominus filiis Jacob, quem cognominavit Israël:which the Lord had instructed to the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel.

et percusserat cum eis pactum,And he had struck a covenant with them,et mandaverat eis,and he had commanded them, dicens:saying:Nolite timere deos alienos,“You shall not fear foreign gods,et non adoretis eos,and you shall not adore them, neque colatis eos,and you shall not worship them,et non immoletis eis:and you shall not sacrifice to them.

sed Dominum Deum vestrum,But the Lord, your God,qui eduxit vos de terra Ægypti in fortitudine magna et in brachio extento, who led you away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with an outstretched arm, ipsum timete, him shall you fear,et illum adorate, and him shall you adore,et ipsi immolate.and to him shall you sacrifice.

Cæremonias quoque,Also, the ceremonies,et judicia, and judgments,et legem, and law,et mandatum, and commandment, quod scripsit vobis, which he wrote for you, custodite ut faciatis cunctis diebus:you shall keep so that you do them for all days.et non timeatis deos alienos. And you shall not fear strange gods.

Et pactum quod percussit vobiscum,And the covenant, which he struck with you, nolite oblivisci:you shall not forget;nec colatis deos alienos, neither shall you worship strange gods.

sed Dominum Deum vestrum timete,But you shall fear the Lord, your God.et ipse eruet vos de manu omnium inimicorum vestrorum. And he will rescue you from the hand of all your enemies.”

Illi vero non audierunt,Yet truly, they did not listen to this.sed juxta consuetudinem suam pristinam perpetrabant.Instead, they acted in accord with their earlier custom.

Fuerunt igitur gentes istæ timentes quidem Dominum,And such were these nations: to some extent fearing the Lord, sed nihilominus et idolis suis servientes:yet nevertheless also serving their idols.nam et filii eorum, et nepotes,As for their sons and grandsons, sicut fecerunt patres sui, just as their fathers acted, ita faciunt usque in præsentem diem.so also did they act, even to the present day.
