Octo annorum erat Josias cum regnare cœpisset:Josiah was eight years old when he had begun to reign.triginta et uno anno regnavit in Jerusalem:He reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Idida filia Hadaia de Besecath. The name of his mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah, from Bozkath.
Fecitque quod placitum erat coram Domino,And he did what was pleasing before the Lord,et ambulavit per omnes vias David patris sui:and he walked in all the ways of his father David.non declinavit ad dexteram,He did not turn aside to the right, sive ad sinistram.or to the left.
Anno autem octavodecimo regis Josiæ,Then, in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, misit rex Saphan filium Aslia filii Messulam scribam templi Domini, the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe of the temple of the Lord, dicens ei:saying to him:
Vade ad Helciam sacerdotem magnum,“Go to Hilkiah, the high priest,ut confletur pecunia quæ illata est in templum Domini,so that the money may be put together which has been brought into the temple of the Lord, quam collegerunt janitores templi a populo:which the doorkeepers of the temple have collected from the people.
deturque fabris per præpositos domus Domini,And let it be given, quiby those in charge of the house of the Lord,et distribuant eam his qui operantur in templo Domini,to the workers.ad instauranda sartatecta templi:And let them distribute it to those who are working in the temple of the Lord in order to repair the surfaces of the temple,
tignariis videlicetspecifically,et cæmentariis,to carpenters and masons,et iis qui interrupta componunt:and to those who mend gaps,et ut emantur ligna, and so that wood may be purchased,et lapides de lapicidinis, and stones from the quarries,ad instaurandum templum Domini.in order to repair the temple of the Lord.
Verumtamen non supputetur eis argentum quod accipiunt,Yet truly, let no account be given by them of the money that they receive.sed in potestate habeant, et in fide.Instead, let them have it within their power and trust.”
Dixit autem Helcias pontifex ad Saphan scribam:Then Hilkiah, the high priest, said to Shaphan,Librum legis reperi in domo Domini.the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.”Deditque Helcias volumen Saphan,And Hilkiah gave the volume to Shaphan, qui et legit illud.and he read it.
Venit quoque Saphan scriba ad regem,Also, Shaphan, the scribe,et renuntiavit ei quod præceperat, went to the king, and reported to him what he had instructed.et ait:And he said:Conflaverunt servi tui pecuniam quæ reperta est in domo Domini,“Your servants have brought together the money which was found in the house of the Lord.et dederunt ut distribueretur fabris a præfectis operum templi Domini. And they have given it so that it would be distributed to the workers by the overseers of the works of the temple of the Lord.”
Narravit quoque Saphan scriba regi, dicens: Librum dedit mihi Helcias sacerdos. Quem cum legisset Saphan coram rege,Also, Shaphan, the scribe, explained to the king, saying, “Hilkiah, the priest, gave the book to me.” And when Shaphan had read it before the king,
et audisset rex verba libri legis Domini, and the king had heard the words of the book of the law of the Lord, scidit vestimenta sua.he tore his garments.
Et præcepit Helciæ sacerdoti,And he instructed Hilkiah, the priest,et Ahicam filio Saphan, and Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,et Achobor filio Micha, and Achbor, the son of Micaiah,et Saphan scribæ,and Shaphan, the scribe,et Asaiæ servo regis, and Asaiah, the servant of the king, dicens:saying:
Ite et consulite Dominum super me,“Go and consult the Lord concerning me,et super populo, and the people,et super omni Juda, and all of Judah,de verbis voluminis istius, quod inventum est:about the words of this volume which has been found.magna enim ira Domini succensa est contra nos, quia non audierunt patres nostri verba libri hujus,For the great wrath of the Lord has been kindled against us because our fathers did not listen to the words of this book,ut facerent omne quod scriptum est nobis.so that they would do all that has been written for us.”
Ierunt itaque Helcias sacerdos,Therefore, Hilkiah, the priest,et Ahicam, and Ahikam,et Achobor, and Achbor,et Sapham, and Shaphan,et Asaia, and Asaiah,ad Holdam prophetidem, went to Huldah, the prophetess, the wife of Shallum, uxorem Sellum filii Thecuæ filii Araas custodis vestium, the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the keeper of the vestments,quæ habitabat in Jerusalem in Secunda:who was living in Jerusalem, in the second part.locutique sunt ad eam.And they spoke with her.
Et illa respondit eis:And she responded to them:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Dicite viro qui misit vos ad me:Tell the man who sent you to me:
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Ecce ego adducam mala super locum istum,Behold, I will lead evils over this place,et super habitatores ejus, omnia verba legis quæ legit rex Juda:and over its inhabitants, all the words of the law that the king of Judah has read.
quia dereliquerunt me,For they have abandoned me,et sacrificaverunt diis alienis, and they have sacrificed to foreign gods, irritantes me in cunctis operibus manuum suarum:provoking me by all the works of their hands.et succendetur indignatio mea in loco hoc,And so my indignation will be kindled against this place.et non extinguetur. And it will not be extinguished.
Regi autem Juda,But to the king of Judah, qui misit vos ut consuleretis Dominum, who sent you so that you would consult the Lord, sic dicetis:so shall you say:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Pro eo quod audisti verba voluminis,In so far as you have heard the words of the volume,
et perterritum est cor tuum, and your heart was terrified,et humiliatus es coram Domino, and you humbled yourself before the Lord, auditis sermonibus contra locum istum et habitatores ejus, listening to the words against this place and its inhabitants, quod videlicet fierent in stuporem et in maledictum:specifically, that they would become an astonishment and a curse,et scidisti vestimenta tua,and because you have torn your garments,et flevisti coram me,and have wept before me:et ego audivi,I also have heard you,ait Dominus:says the Lord.
idcirco colligam te ad patres tuos,For this reason, I will gather you to your fathers,et colligeris ad sepulchrum tuum in pace, and you will be gathered to your sepulcher in peace,ut non videant oculi tui omnia mala quæ inducturus sum super locum istum.so that your eyes may not see all the evils that I will bring over this place.”
