Et renuntiaverunt regi quod dixerat. And they reported to the king what she had said.Qui misit:And he sent,et congregati sunt ad eum omnes senes Juda et Jerusalem.and all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem were gathered to him.
Ascenditque rex templum Domini,And the king ascended to the temple of the Lord.et omnes viri Juda,And with him were all the men of Judah and all who were living in Jerusalem:universique qui habitabant in Jerusalem cum eo sacerdotesthe priests,et prophetæ,and the prophets,et omnis populus a parvo usque ad magnum:and all the people, legitque, from the small to the great.cunctis audientibus,And in the hearing of everyone, omnia verba libri fœderis,he read all the words of the book of the covenant, qui inventus est in domo Domini.which was found in the house of the Lord.
Stetitque rex super gradum:And the king stood upon the step.et fœdus percussit coram Domino,And he struck a covenant before the Lord,ut ambularent post Dominum,so that they would walk after the Lord,et custodirent præcepta ejus, et testimonia, and keep his precepts and testimonies and ceremonies,et cæremonias in omni corde, with all their heart and with all their soul,et in tota anima, et suscitarent verba fœderis hujus, and so that they would carry out the words of this covenant,quæ scripta erant in libro illo:which had been written in that book.acquievitque populus pacto. And the people agreed to the covenant.
Et præcepit rex Helciæ pontifici,And the king instructed Hilkiah, the high priest,et sacerdotibus secundi ordinis, and the priests of the second order,et janitoribus, and the doorkeepers,ut projicerent de templo Domini omnia vasa quæ facta fuerant Baal, et in luco,so that they would cast out of the temple of the Lord all the vessels which had been made for Baal, and for the sacred grove,et universæ militiæ cæli:and for the entire army of heaven.et combussit ea foris Jerusalem in convalle Cedron,And he burned them outside of Jerusalem, in the steep valley of Kidron.et tulit pulverem eorum in Bethel. And he carried their dust into Bethel.
Et delevit aruspices quos posuerant reges Juda ad sacrificandum in excelsis per civitates Juda,And he destroyed the soothsayers, whom the kings of Judah had appointed to sacrifice in the high places throughout the cities of Judah,et in circuitu Jerusalem:and all around Jerusalem,et eos qui adolebant incensum Baal, along with those who were burning incense to Baal,et soli, and to the Sun,et lunæ, et duodecim signis, and to the Moon, and to the twelve signs,et omni militiæ cæli.and to the entire army of heaven.
Et efferri fecit lucum de domo Domini foras Jerusalem in convalle Cedron,And he caused the sacred grove to be carried away from the house of the Lord, outside of Jerusalem,et combussit eum ibi,to the steep valley of Kidron.et redegit in pulverem,And he burned it there, and reduced it to dust.et projecit super sepulchra vulgi. And he cast the dust over the graves of the common people.
Destruxit quoque ædiculas effeminatorum quæ erant in domo Domini,Also, he destroyed the small places of the effeminate, which were in the house of the Lord, pro quibus mulieres texebant quasi domunculas luci.for which the women were weaving something like little houses in the sacred grove.
Congregavitque omnes sacerdotes de civitatibus Juda,And he gathered together all the priests from the cities of Judah.et contaminavit excelsa ubi sacrificabant sacerdotes de Gabaa usque Bersabee,And he defiled the high places, where the priests were sacrificing, from Geba as far as Beersheba.et destruxit aras portarum in introitu ostii Josue principis civitatis,And he tore down the altars of the gates at the entrance to the gate of Joshua, the leader of the city, quod erat ad sinistram portæ civitatis.which was to the left of the gate of the city.
Verumtamen non ascendebant sacerdotes excelsorum ad altare Domini in Jerusalem:Yet truly, the priests of the high places did not ascend to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem.sed tantum comedebant azyma in medio fratrum suorum. For they would only eat from the unleavened bread in the midst of their brothers.
Contaminavit quoque Topheth,Also, he defiled Topheth, quod est in convalle filii Ennom, which is in the steep valley of the son of Hinnom,ut nemo consecraret filium suum aut filiam per ignem,so that no one would consecrate his son or his daughter, through fire,Moloch.to Molech.
Abstulit quoque equos quos dederant reges Juda soli in introitu templi Domini juxta exedram Nathanmelech eunuchi, qui erat in Pharurim: currus autem solis combussit igni. Also, he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the Sun, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, beside the hallway of Nathan-melech, the eunuch, who was in Pharurim. And he burned the chariots of the Sun with fire.
Altaria quoque quæ erant super tecta cœnaculi Achaz,Also, the altars which were upon the roof of the upper room of Ahaz,quæ fecerant reges Juda, which the kings of Judah had made,et altaria quæ fecerat Manasses in duobus atriis templi Domini, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the temple of the Lord, destruxit rex,the king destroyed.et cucurrit inde,And he hurried from there,et dispersit cinerem eorum in torrentem Cedron.and he scattered their ashes into the torrent Kidron.
Excelsa quoque,Also, the high places which were in Jerusalem,quæ erant in Jerusalem ad dexteram partem montis offensionis,to the right side of the Mount of Offense, which Solomon,quæ ædificaverat Salomon rex Israël Astaroth idolo Sidoniorum, the king of Israel, had built to Ashtoreth, the idol of the Sidonians,et Chamos offensioni Moab, and to Chemosh, the offense of Moab,et Melchom abominationi filiorum Ammon, and to Milcom, the abomination of the sons of Ammon, polluit rex.the king defiled.
Et contrivit statuas,And he crushed the statues,et succidit lucos:and he cut down the sacred groves.replevitque loca eorum ossibus mortuorum. And he filled their places with the bones of the dead.
Insuper et altare quod erat in Bethel,Then too, the altar which was in Bethel,et excelsum quod fecerat Jeroboam filius Nabat, and the high place which Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, qui peccare fecit Israël:who caused Israel to sin, had made:et altare illud, et excelsum destruxit, both that altar and the high place he tore down, and burned, atque combussit, and reduced to dust.et comminuit in pulverem, succenditque etiam lucum. And then he also set fire to the sacred grove.
Et conversus Josias,And in that place Josiah, vidit ibi sepulchra quæ erant in monte:turning, saw the sepulchers which were on the mount.misitque et tulit ossa de sepulchris,And he sent and took the bones from the sepulchers.et combussit ea super altare,And he burned them upon the altar,et polluit illud juxta verbum Domini quod locutus est vir Dei,and he defiled it in accord with the word of the Lord, which was spoken by the man of God,qui prædixerat verba hæc.who had predicted these events.
Et ait:And he said,Quis est titulus ille, quem video?“What is that monument that I see?”Responderuntque ei cives urbis illius:And the citizens of that city responded to him:Sepulchrum est hominis Dei,“It is the sepulcher of the man of God,qui venit de Juda, who came from Judah,et prædixit verba hæc,and who predicted these events,quæ fecisti super altare Bethel.which you have carried out concerning the altar of Bethel.”
Et ait: Dimitte eum:And he said: “Permit him.nemo commoveat ossa ejus.Let no one move his bones.”Et intacta manserunt ossa illius cum ossibus prophetæ qui venerat de Samaria. And his bones have remained untouched, with the bones of the prophet who had arrived from Samaria.
Insuper et omnia fana excelsorum quæ erant in civitatibus Samariæ,Then too, all the shrines of the high places, which were in the cities of Samaria,quæ fecerant reges Israël ad irritandum Dominum, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord, abstulit Josias:Josiah took away.et fecit eis secundum omnia opera quæ fecerat in Bethel. And he acted toward them according to all the works that he had done in Bethel.
Et occidit universos sacerdotes excelsorum qui erant ibi super altaria,And all the priests of the high places, who were in that place, he killed upon the altars.et combussit ossa humana super ea:And he burned the bones of the men upon them.reversusque est Jerusalem. And he returned to Jerusalem.
Et præcepit omni populo,And he instructed all the people, dicens:saying:Facite Phase Domino Deo vestro,“Keep the Passover to the Lord your God,secundum quod scriptum est in libro fœderis hujus.according to what has been written in the book of this covenant.”
Nec enim factum est Phase tale a diebus judicum qui judicaverunt Israël,Now no similar Passover was kept, from the days of the judges, who judged Israel,et omnium dierum regum Israël et regum Juda, and from all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah,
sicut in octavodecimo anno regis Josiæ factum est Phase istud Domino in Jerusalem.as this Passover, which was kept to the Lord in Jerusalem, in the eighteenth year of king Josiah.
Sed et pythones,Then too, Josiah took away those who divined by spirits,et ariolos, and the soothsayers,et figuras idolorum, and the images of the idols,et immunditias, and the defilements,et abominationes, and the abominations,quæ fuerant in terra Juda et Jerusalem, which had been in the land of Judah and Jerusalem, so that he might establish the words of the law, abstulit Josias:which were written in the book,ut statueret verba legis quæ scripta sunt in libro quem invenit Helcias sacerdos in templo Domini.which Hilkiah, the priest, found in the temple of the Lord.
Similis illi non fuit ante eum rex,There was no king before him similar to him,qui reverteretur ad Dominum in omni corde suo,who returned to the Lord with all his heart,et in tota anima sua,and with all his soul,et in universa virtute sua juxta omnem legem Moysi:and with all his strength, in accord with the entire law of Moses.neque post eum surrexit similis illi. And after him, there rose up no one similar to him.
Verumtamen non est aversus Dominus ab ira furoris sui magni quo iratus est furor ejus contra Judam propter irritationes quibus provocaverat eum Manasses.Yet truly, the Lord did not turn away from the wrath of his great fury, his fury which was enraged against Judah because of the provocations by which Manasseh had provoked him.
Dixit itaque Dominus:And so the Lord said:Etiam Judam auferam a facie mea,“And now I will remove Judah from my face, sicut abstuli Israël:just as I removed Israel.et projiciam civitatem hanc quam elegi Jerusalem,And I will cast aside this city, Jerusalem, which I have chosen,et domum de qua dixi:and the house, about which I said:Erit nomen meum ibi.My name shall be there.”
Reliqua autem sermonum Josiæ,Now the rest of the words of Josiah,et universa quæ fecit, and all that he did, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda?have these not been written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?
In diebus ejus ascendit Pharao Nechao rex Ægypti contra regem Assyriorum ad flumen Euphraten, et abiit Josias rex in occursum ejus: et occisus est in Mageddo cum vidisset eum.During his days, Pharaoh Neco, the king of Egypt, ascended against the king of the Assyrians to the river Euphrates. And king Josiah went out to meet him. And when he had seen him, he was killed at Megiddo.
Et portaverunt eum servi sui mortuum de Mageddo:And his servants carried him dead from Megiddo.et pertulerunt in Jerusalem,And they took him to Jerusalem,et sepelierunt eum in sepulchro suo.and they buried him in his own sepulcher.Tulitque populus terræ Joachaz filium Josiæ:And the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah.et unxerunt eum,And they anointed him,et constituerunt eum regem pro patre suo.and made him king in place of his father.
Viginti trium annorum erat Joachaz cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he had begun to reign,et tribus mensibus regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Amital filia Jeremiæ de Lobna. The name of his mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah, from Libnah.
Et fecit malum coram Domino,And he did evil before the Lord, juxta omnia quæ fecerant patres ejus.according to all that his fathers had done.
Vinxitque eum Pharao Nechao in Rebla,And Pharaoh Neco bound him at Riblah,quæ est in terra Emath, which is in the land of Hamath,ne regnaret in Jerusalem:so that he would not reign in Jerusalem.et imposuit mulctam terræ centum talentis argenti,And he imposed a penalty on the land: one hundred talents of silver,et talento auri.and one talent of gold.
Regemque constituit Pharao Nechao Eliacim filium Josiæ pro Josia patre ejus:And Pharaoh Neco appointed Eliakim, the son of Josiah, as king in place of Josiah his father.vertitque nomen ejus Joakim. And he changed his name to Jehoiakim.Porro Joachaz tulit,Then he took Jehoahaz away,et duxit in Ægyptum, et mortuus est ibi.and he brought him into Egypt, and there he died.
Argentum autem et aurum dedit Joakim Pharaoni,Now Jehoiakim gave silver and gold to Pharaoh, cum indixisset terræ per singulos, ut conferretur juxta præceptum Pharaonis:when he had taxed the land, according to each one who would contribute by the command of Pharaoh.et unumquemque juxta vires suas exegit,And he exacted both silver and gold from the people of the land, tam argentum quam aurum, de populo terræ,from each one according to his ability,ut daret Pharaoni Nechao.so that he would give to Pharaoh Neco.
Viginti quinque annorum erat Joakim cum regnare cœpisset,Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he had begun to reign,et undecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem:and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.nomen matris ejus Zebida filia Phadaia de Ruma. The name of his mother was Zebidah, the daughter of Pedaiah, from Rumah.
Et fecit malum coram Domino juxta omnia quæ fecerant patres ejus. And he did evil before the Lord, in accord with all that his fathers had done.
