Mulier autem quædam de uxoribus prophetarum clamabat ad Eliseum,Now a certain woman, from the wives of the prophets, cried out to Elisha, dicens:saying:Servus tuus vir meus mortuus est,“My husband, your servant, is dead.et tu nosti quia servus tuus fuit timens Dominum:And you know that your servant was one who fears the Lord.et ecce creditor venit ut tollat duos filios meos ad serviendum sibi. And behold, a creditor has arrived, so that he may take away my two sons to serve him.”
Cui dixit Eliseus:And Elisha said to her:Quid vis ut faciam tibi? dic mihi,“What do you want me to do for you? Tell me,quid habes in domo tua?what do you have in your house?”At illa respondit:And she responded, “I,Non habeo ancilla tua quidquam in domo mea, your handmaid, do not have anything in my house, except a little oil, nisi parum olei quo ungar.with which I may be anointed.”
Cui ait: Vade,And he said to her:pete mutuo ab omnibus vicinis tuis vasa vacua non pauca,“Go, ask to borrow from all your neighbors empty vessels, more than a few.
et ingredere,And enteret claude ostium tuum cum intrinsecus fueris tu,and close your door.et filii tui:And when you are inside with your sons,et mitte inde in omnia vasa hæc,pour from the oil into all those vessels.et cum plena fuerint,And when they are full, tolles.take them away.”
Ivit itaque mulier, et clausit ostium super se,And so, the woman went and closed the door upon herself and her sons.et super filios suos: illi offerebant vasa,They were bringing her the vessels,et illa infundebat.and she was pouring into them.
Cumque plena fuissent vasa,And when the vessels had been filled, dixit ad filium suum:she said to her son,Affer mihi adhuc vas.“Bring me another a vessel.”Et ille respondit:And he responded,Non habeo.“I have none.”Stetitque oleum. And there was oil remaining.
Venit autem illa, et indicavit homini Dei.Then she went and told the man of God.Et ille: Vade,And he said:inquit, vende oleum,“Go, sell the oil,et redde creditori tuo:and repay your creditor.tu autem, et filii tui vivite de reliquo. Then you and your sons may live on what remains.”
Facta est autem quædam dies,Now it happened that, on a certain day,et transibat Eliseus per Sunam:Elisha passed by Shunem.erat autem ibi mulier magna,And there was a great woman there,quæ tenuit eum ut comederet panem:who took him to eat bread.cumque frequenter inde transiret,And since he frequently passed by there, divertebat ad eam ut comederet panem.he turned aside to her house, so that he might eat bread.
Quæ dixit ad virum suum:And she said to her husband:Animadverto quod vir Dei sanctus est iste,“I have noticed that he is a holy man of God,qui transit per nos frequenter.who passes by us frequently.
Faciamus ergo ei cœnaculum parvum,Therefore, let us prepare a small upper room for him,et ponamus ei in eo lectulum, and place a bed in it for him,et mensam, and a table,et sellam, and a chair,et candelabrum, and a lampstand,ut cum venerit ad nos,so that when he comes to us,maneat ibi.he may stay there.”
Facta est ergo dies quædam,Then it happened that, on a certain day,et veniens divertit in cœnaculum, arriving, he turned aside into the upper room,et requievit ibi.and he rested there.
Dixitque ad Giezi puerum suum:And he said to his servant Gehazi,Voca Sunamitidem istam.“Call this Shunammite woman.”Qui cum vocasset eam,And when he had called her,et illa stetisset coram eo,and she stood before him,
dixit ad puerum suum: Loquere ad eam:he said to his servant: “Say to her:Ecce,Behold, sedule in omnibus ministrasti nobis:you have ministered to us attentively in all things.quid vis ut faciam tibi? What do you want, that I might do for you?numquid habes negotium, et vis ut loquar regi,Do you have any business, or do you want me to speak to the king, sive principi militiæ?or to the leader of the military?”Quæ respondit:And she responded,In medio populi mei habito.“I live in the midst of my own people.”
Et ait:And he said,Quid ergo vult ut faciam ei? Dixitque Giezi:“Then what does she want, that I might do for her?”Ne quæras:And Gehazi said:filium enim non habet,“You need not ask. For she has no son,et vir ejus senex est.and her husband is elderly.”
Præcepit itaque ut vocaret eam:And so, he instructed him to call her.quæ cum vocata fuisset,And when she had been called,et stetisset ante ostium, and was standing before the door,
dixit ad eam:he said to her,In tempore isto,“At this time,et in hac eadem hora, and at this same hour,si vita comes fuerit, with life as a companion, habebis in utero filium.you will have a son in your womb.”At illa respondit:But she responded, “Do not,Noli quæso,I ask you, my lord, domine mi vir Dei, noli mentiri ancillæ tuæ.a man of God, do not be willing to lie to your handmaid.”
Et concepit mulier,And the woman conceived.et peperit filium in tempore,And she bore a son,et in hora eadem,in the timequa dixerat Eliseus.and at the same hour as Elisha had said.
Crevit autem puer:And the boy grew.et cum esset quædam dies,And on a certain day,et egressus isset ad patrem suum, when he had gone out to his father,ad messores,to the harvesters,
ait patri suo:he said to his father:Caput meum doleo,“I have a pain in my head.caput meum doleo.I have a pain in my head.”At ille dixit puero:But he said to his servant,Tolle,“Take him,et duc eum ad matrem suam.and lead him to his mother.”
Qui cum tulisset,But when he had taken him,et duxisset eum ad matrem suam, and he had led him to his mother, posuit eum illa super genua sua usque ad meridiem, she placed him upon her knees, until midday,et mortuus est.and then he died.
Ascendit autem,Then she went upet collocavit eum super lectulum hominis Dei,and laid him out on the bed of the man of God,et clausit ostium:and she closed the door.et egressa,And departing,
vocavit virum suum,she called her husband,et ait:and she said:Mitte mecum,“Send with me,obsecro,I beg you,unum de pueris,one of your servants,et asinam,and a donkey,ut excurram usque ad hominem Dei,so that I may hurry to the man of God,et revertar.and then return.”
Qui ait illi:And he said to her:Quam ob causam vadis ad eum?“What is the reason that you would go to him?hodie non sunt calendæ,Today is not the new moon, neque sabbatum.and it is not the Sabbath.”Quæ respondit:She responded,Vadam.“I will go.”
Stravitque asinam,And she saddled a donkey,et præcepit puero:and she instructed her servant:Mina,“Drive,et propera:and hurry on.ne mihi moram facias in eundo:You shall cause no delay for me in departing.et hoc age quod præcipio tibi. And do whatever I instruct you to do.”
Profecta est igitur,And so she set out.et venit ad virum Dei in montem Carmeli:And she came to the man of God, on mount Carmel.cumque vidisset eam vir Dei e contra,And when the man of God had seen her at a distance, ait ad Giezi puerum suum:he said to his servant Gehazi: “Behold,Ecce Sunamitis illa.it is that Shunammite woman.
Vade ergo in occursum ejus,So then, go to meet her,et dic ei:and say to her,Recte ne agitur circa te, et circa virum tuum,‘Does all go well concerning you, and your husband,et circa filium tuum?and your son?’”Quæ respondit: Recte. And she answered, “It is well.”
Cumque venisset ad virum Dei in montem,And when she had arrived at the man of God, on the mount, apprehendit pedes ejus:she took hold of his feet.et accessit Giezi ut amoveret eam.And Gehazi drew near, so that he might remove her.Et ait homo Dei: Dimitte illam:But the man of God said: “Permit her.anima enim ejus in amaritudine est, et Dominus celavit a me,For her soul is in bitterness. And the Lord has concealed it from me,et non indicavit mihi.and has not revealed it to me.”
Quæ dixit illi:And she said to him:Numquid petivi filium a domino meo?“Did I ask a son from my lord?numquid non dixi tibi:Did I not say to you,Ne illudas me?‘You should not deceive me?’”
Et ille ait ad Giezi:And so he said to Gehazi:Accinge lumbos tuos,“Gird your waist,et tolle baculum meum in manu tua,and take my staff in your hand,et vade.and go.Si occurrerit tibi homo,If any man will meet you,non salutes eum:you shall not greet him.et si salutaverit te quispiam,And if anyone greets you,non respondeas illi:you shall not respond to him.et pones baculum meum super faciem pueri. And place my staff upon the face of the boy.”
Porro mater pueri ait:But the mother of the boy said,Vivit Dominus,“As the Lord lives,et vivit anima tua,and as your soul lives, non dimittam te.I will not release you.”Surrexit ergo,Therefore, he rose up,et secutus est eam.and he followed her.
Giezi autem præcesserat ante eos,But Gehazi had gone before them,et posuerat baculum super faciem pueri, and he had placed the staff upon the face of the boy.et non erat vox,And there was no voice, neque sensus:nor any response.reversusque est in occursum ejus,And so he returned to meet him.et nuntiavit ei,And he reported to him, dicens:saying,Non surrexit puer.“The boy did not rise up.”
Ingressus est ergo Eliseus domum,Therefore, Elisha entered the house.et ecce puer mortuus jacebat in lectulo ejus:And behold, the boy was lying dead upon his bed.
ingressusque clausit ostium super seAnd entering,et super puerum,he closed the door upon himself and the boy.et oravit ad Dominum. And he prayed to the Lord.
Et ascendit,And he climbed up,et incubuit super puerum:and lay across the boy.posuitque os suum super os ejus,And he put his mouth over his mouth,et oculos suos super oculos ejus, and his eyes over his eyes,et manus suas super manus ejus:and his hands over his hands.et incurvavit se super eum,And he leaned himself over him,et calefacta est caro pueri.and the body of the boy grew warm.
At ille reversus,And returning, deambulavit in domo,he walked around the house, semel huc atque illuc:first here and then there.et ascendit,And he went up,et incubuit super eum:and lay across him.et oscitavit puer septies,And the boy gasped seven times, aperuitque oculos.and he opened his eyes.
At ille vocavit Giezi,And he called Gehazi,et dixit ei:and said to him,Voca Sunamitidem hanc.“Call this Shunammite woman.”Quæ vocata,And having been called, ingressa est ad eum.she entered to him.Qui ait:And he said,Tolle filium tuum.“Take up your son.”
Venit illa,She wentet corruit ad pedes ejus, and fell at his feet,et adoravit super terram:and she reverenced upon the ground.tulitque filium suum,And she took up her son,et egressa est.and departed.
Et Eliseus reversus est in Galgala. And Elisha returned to Gilgal.Erat autem fames in terra,Now there was a famine in the land,et filii prophetarum habitabant coram eo.and the sons of the prophets were living in his sight.Dixitque uni de pueris suis:And he said to one of his servants,Pone ollam grandem,“Set out a large cooking pot,et coque pulmentum filiis prophetarum.and boil a soup for the sons of the prophets.”
Et egressus est unus in agrum ut colligeret herbas agrestes:And one went out into the field, so that he might collect wild herbs.invenitque quasi vitem silvestrem,And he found something like a wild vine,et collegit ex ea colocynthidas agri, and he gathered from it bitter fruits of the field,et implevit pallium suum, and he filled his cloak.et reversus concidit in ollam pulmenti:And returning, he cut these up for the pot of soup.nesciebat enim quid esset. But he did not know what it was.
Infuderunt ergo sociis ut comederent:Then they poured it out for their companions to eat.cumque gustassent de coctione,And when they had tasted the mixture, clamaverunt, they cried out, dicentes:saying,Mors in olla,“Death is in the cooking pot,vir Dei.O man of God!”Et non potuerunt comedere. And they were unable to eat.
At ille:But he said,Afferte, inquit,“Bring some flour.”farinam. Cumque tulissent,And when they had brought it,misit in ollam, et ait:he cast it into the cooking pot,Infunde turbæ, ut comedant.and he said, “Pour it out for the group,Et non fuit amplius quidquam amaritudinis in olla.so that they may eat.” And there was no longer any bitterness in the cooking pot.
Vir autem quidam venit de Baalsalisa deferens viro Dei panes primitiarum,Now a certain man arrived from Baal-Shalishah, carrying, for the man of God,viginti panes hordeaceos, bread from the first-fruits,et frumentum novum in pera sua.twenty loaves of barley, and new grain in his satchel. At ille dixit: Da populo,But he said, “Give it to the people,ut comedat.so that they may eat.”
Responditque ei minister ejus:And his servant responded to him,Quantum est hoc,“What amount is this,ut apponam centum viris?that I should set it before a hundred men?”Rursum ille ait:But he said again:Da populo,“Give it to the people,ut comedat:so that they may eat.hæc enim dicit Dominus:For thus says the Lord,Comedent,‘They shall eat,et supererit.and there shall be still more.’”
Posuit itaque coram eis:And so, he set it before them. And they ate,qui comederunt, and there was still more,et superfuit juxta verbum Domini.in accord with the word of the Lord.
