Joram vero filius Achab regnavit super Israël in Samaria anno decimooctavo Josaphat regis Judæ: regnavitque duodecim annis.Truly, Joram, the son of Ahab, reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. And he reigned for twelve years.

Et fecit malum coram Domino,And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, sed non sicut pater suusbut not as his father and mother did.et mater:For he took away the statues of Baal, tulit enim statuas Baal quas fecerat pater ejus.which his father had made.

Verumtamen in peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat,Yet truly, he did adhere to the sins of Jeroboam, qui peccare fecit Israël, adhæsit, the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin;nec recessit ab eis.neither did he withdraw from these.

Porro Mesa rex Moab nutriebat pecora multa,Now Mesha, the king of Moab, raised many sheep.et solvebat regi Israël centum millia agnorum,And he repaid to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs,et centum millia arietum cum velleribus suis.and one hundred thousand rams, with their fleece.

Cumque mortuus fuisset Achab,And when Ahab had died,prævaricatus est fœdus quod habebat cum rege Israël.he transgressed the pact that he had with the king of Israel.

Egressus est igitur rex Joram in die illa de Samaria,Therefore, king Joram departed on that day from Samaria,et recensuit universum Israël.and he took a count of all of Israel.

Misitque ad Josaphat regem Juda,And he sent to Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, dicens:saying:Rex Moab recessit a me: veni mecum contra eum ad prælium.“The king of Moab has withdrawn from me. Come to battle with me against him.”Qui respondit:And he responded:Ascendam: qui meus est,“I will go up. What is mine, tuus est:is yours.populus meus, populus tuus,My people are your people.et equi mei, equi tui.And my horses are your horses.”

Dixitque:And he said,Per quam viam ascendemus?“Along which way shall we ascend?”At ille respondit:So he responded,Per desertum Idumææ.“Along the desert of Idumea.”

Perrexerunt igitur rex Israël,Therefore, the king of Israel, and the king of Judah,et rex Juda, et rex Edom, and the king of Idumea, traveled,et circuierunt per viam septem dierum, and they went by a circuitous path for seven days.nec erat aqua exercitui et jumentis quæ sequebantur eos.But there was no water for the army or for the beasts of burden which were following them.

Dixitque rex Israël:And the king of Israel said:Heu!“Alas, heu!alas, heu!alas!congregavit nos Dominus tres reges ut traderet in manus Moab. The Lord has gathered we three kings, so that he might deliver us into the hands of Moab.”

Et ait Josaphat:And Jehoshaphat said,Estne hic propheta Domini,“Is there not a prophet of the Lord here,ut deprecemur Dominum per eum?so that we may appeal to the Lord through him?”Et respondit unus de servis regis Israël:And one of the servants of the king of Israel responded,Est hic Eliseus filius Saphat,“Elisha, the son of Shaphat, is here, qui fundebat aquam super manus Eliæ.who poured water upon the hands of Elijah.”

Et ait Josaphat:And Jehoshaphat said,Est apud eum sermo Domini.“The word of the Lord is with him.” And so,Descenditque ad eum rex Israël,the king of Israel, with Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah,et Josaphat rex Juda, and with the king of Idumea,et rex Edom.descended to him.

Dixit autem Eliseus ad regem Israël:Then Elisha said to the king of Israel:Quid mihi et tibi est?“What is there between you and me?vade ad prophetas patris tui et matris tuæ.Go to the prophets of your father and your mother.”Et ait illi rex Israël:And the king of Israel said to him,Quare congregavit Dominus tres reges hos ut traderet eos in manus Moab?“Why has the Lord gathered these three kings, so that he might deliver them into the hands of Moab?”

Dixitque ad eum Eliseus:And Elisha said to him:Vivit Dominus exercituum,“As the Lord of hosts lives,in cujus conspectu sto,in whose sight I stand, quod si non vultum Josaphat regis Judæ erubescerem,if I was not humbled by the face of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, non attendissem quidem te,certainly I would neither have listened to you,nec respexissem.nor have looked upon you.

Nunc autem adducite mihi psaltem. But now, bring a musician to me.”Cumque caneret psaltes,And while the musician was playing, facta est super eum manus Domini, et ait:the hand of the Lord fell upon him, and he said:

Hæc dicit Dominus:“Thus says the Lord:Facite alveum torrentis hujus fossas et fossas.Make, in the channel of this torrent, pit after pit.

Hæc enim dicit Dominus: Non videbitis ventum,For thus says the Lord: You shall not see wind or rain.neque pluviam: et alveus iste replebitur aquis,And yet this channel shall be filled with water.et bibetis vos,And you shall drink,et familiæ vestræ,you and your families,et jumenta vestra.and your beasts of burden.

Parumque est hoc in conspectu Domini:And this is small in the sight of the Lord. So,insuper tradet etiam Moab in manus vestras.in addition, he will also deliver Moab into your hands.

Et percutietis omnem civitatem munitam,And you shall strike every fortified townet omnem urbem electam, and every elect city.et universum lignum fructiferum succidetis,And you shall cut down every fruitful tree.cunctosque fontes aquarum obturabitis,And you shall obstruct all the sources of water.et omnem agrum egregium operietis lapidibus. And you shall cover every excellent field with stones.”

Factum est igitur mane,Then it happened that, in the morning, quando sacrificium offerri solet, when the sacrifices were usually to be offered,et ecce aquæ veniebant per viam Edom, behold, water was arriving along the way of Idumea,et repleta est terra aquis.and the land was filled with water.

Universi autem Moabitæ audientes quod ascendissent reges ut pugnarent adversum eos,Then all the Moabites, hearing that the kings had ascended so that they might fight against them, convocaverunt omnes qui accincti erant balteo desuper, gathered all who had been girded with a belt around them,et steterunt in terminis.and they stood at the borders.

Primoque mane surgentes,And rising up in early morning,et orto jam sole ex adverso aquarum, and when the sun was now rising before the waters, viderunt Moabitæ e contra aquas rubras quasi sanguinem, the Moabites saw the waters opposite them, which were red like blood.

dixeruntque:And they said:Sanguis gladii est:“It is the blood of the sword!pugnaverunt reges contra se,The kings have fought among themselves,et cæsi sunt mutuo:and they have slain one another. Go now, nunc perge ad prædam, Moab.Moab, to the spoils!”

Perrexeruntque in castra Israël:And they went into the camp of Israel.porro consurgens Israël,But Israel, rising up,percussit Moab:struck Moab,at illi fugerunt coram eis.and they fled before them.Venerunt igitur qui vicerant,And since they had prevailed,et percusserunt Moab, they went and struck down Moab.

et civitates destruxerunt:And they destroyed the cities.et omnem agrum optimum, mittentes singuli lapides,And they filled up every excellent field, repleverunt: et universos fontes aquarum obturaverunt:each one casting stones. And they obstructed all the sources of water.et omnia ligna fructifera succiderunt,And they cut down all the fruitful trees, ita ut muri tantum fictiles remanerent:to such an extent that only brick walls remained.et circumdata est civitas a fundibulariis,And the city was encircled by the slingers of stones.et magna ex parte percussa. And a great part of it was struck down.

Quod cum vidisset rex Moab,And when the king of Moab had seen this,prævaluisse scilicet hostes, specifically, that the enemies had prevailed, tulit secum septingentos viros educentes gladium, ut irrumperent ad regem Edom:he took with him seven hundred men who draw the sword, so that he might break through to the king of Idumea.et non potuerunt. But they were unable.

Arripiensque filium suum primogenitum,And taking his firstborn son,qui regnaturus erat pro eo,who would have reigned in his place, obtulit holocaustum super murum:he offered him as a holocaust upon the wall.et facta est indignatio magna in Israël,And there was great indignation in Israel.statimque recesserunt ab eo,And they promptly withdrew from him,et reversi sunt in terram suam.and they turned back to their own land.
