Eliseus autem prophetes vocavit unum de filiis prophetarum,Now the prophet Elisha called one of the sons of the prophets,et ait illi:and he said to him:Accinge lumbos tuos,“Gird your waist,et tolle lenticulam olei hanc in manu tua,and take this little bottle of oil in your hand,et vade in Ramoth Galaad.and go to Ramoth Gilead.
Cumque veneris illuc,And when you arrive in that place, videbis Jehu filium Josaphat filii Namsi:you will see Jehu, the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi.et ingressus suscitabis eum de medio fratrum suorum,And upon entering, you shall raise him up from the midst of his brothers,et introduces in interius cubiculum.and you shall lead him into an inner room.
Tenensque lenticulam olei,And taking the little bottle of oil, fundes super caput ejus, you shall pour it upon his head,et dices:and you shall say:Hæc dicit Dominus:‘Thus says the Lord:Unxi te regem super Israël.I have anointed you as king over Israel.’Aperiesque ostium,And you shall open the dooret fugies, and flee.et non ibi subsistes. And you shall not remain in that place.”
Abiit ergo adolescens puer prophetæ in Ramoth Galaad,Therefore, the young man, a servant of the prophet, went away to Ramoth Gilead.
et ingressus est illuc:And he entered that place, ecce autem principes exercitus sedebant:and behold, the leaders of the army were sitting there,et ait:and he said,Verbum mihi ad te,“I have a word for you,o princeps.O prince.”Dixitque Jehu:And Jehu said,Ad quem ex omnibus nobis?“For which one among us all?”At ille dixit:And he said,Ad te, o princeps.“For you, O prince.”
Et surrexit, et ingressus est cubiculum:And he rose up and entered into the room.at ille fudit oleum super caput ejus,And he poured the oil on his head, and he said:et ait: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Unxi te regem super populum Domini Israël,‘I have anointed you as king over Israel, the people of the Lord.
et percuties domum Achab domini tui,And you shall strike down the house of Ahab,et ulciscar sanguinem servorum meorum prophetarum, your lord. And I will avenge the blood of my servants, the prophets,et sanguinem omnium servorum Domini de manu Jezabel.and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, from the hand of Jezebel.
Perdamque omnem domum Achab:And I will destroy the entire house of Ahab.et interficiam de Achab mingentem ad parietem,And I will cause to pass away from Ahab, whatever urinates against a wall,et clausum et novissimum in Israël.and whatever is lame, and whatever is least in Israel.
Et dabo domum Achab sicut domum Jeroboam filii Nabat,And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat,et sicut domum Baasa filii Ahia.and like the house of Baasha, the son of Ahijah.
Jezabel quoque comedent canes in agro Jezrahel,Also, the dogs will consume Jezebel, in the field of Jezreel.nec erit qui sepeliat eam.Neither will there be anyone who may bury her.’”Aperuitque ostium,And then he opened the door,et fugit.and he fled.
Jehu autem egressus est ad servos domini sui:Then Jehu went out to the servants of his lord.qui dixerunt ei:And they said to him:Rectene sunt omnia?“Is everything well?quid venit insanus iste ad te?Why has this insane man come to you?”Qui ait eis:And he said to them,Nostis hominem,“You know the man,et quid locutus sit.and what he said.”
At ille responderunt:But they responded,Falsum est,“That is false;sed magis narra nobis.instead,Qui ait eis:you should tell us.”HæcAnd he said to them,et hæc locutus est mihi,“He said to me these certain things,et ait:and he said,Hæc dicit Dominus:‘Thus says the Lord:Unxi te regem super Israël.I have anointed you as king over Israel.’”
Festinaverunt itaque,And so they hurried away. And each one,et unusquisque tollens pallium suum posuerunt sub pedibus ejus in similitudinem tribunalis, taking his cloak, placed it under his feet, in the manner of a seat for judgment.et cecinerunt tuba,And they sounded the trumpet, atque dixerunt:and they said:Regnavit Jehu.“Jehu reigns!”
Conjuravit ergo Jehu filius Josaphat filii Namsi contra Joram:Then Jehu, the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, porro Joram obsederat Ramoth Galaad, conspired against Joram. Now Joram had besieged Ramoth Gilead, ipse et omnis Israël contra Hazaël regem Syriæ:he and all of Israel, against Hazael, the king of Syria.
et reversus fuerat ut curaretur in Jezrahel propter vulnera,And he had returned, so that he might be cured at Jezreel, because of his wounds.quia percusserant eum Syri præliantem contra Hazaël regem Syriæ.For the Syrians had struck him, while he was fighting against Hazael, the king of Syria.Dixitque Jehu:And Jehu said,Si placet vobis,“If it pleases you, nemo egrediatur profugus de civitate, let no one depart, fleeing from the city;ne vadat, et nuntiet in Jezrahel.otherwise he may go and give a report in Jezreel.”
Et ascendit, et profectus est in Jezrahel:And he climbed up and set out for Jezreel,Joram enim ægrotabat ibi, because Joram was sick there,et Ochozias rex Juda descenderat ad visitandum Joram.and Ahaziah, the king of Judah, had gone down to visit Joram.
Igitur speculator qui stabat super turrim Jezrahel,And so the watchman, who was standing upon the tower of Jezreel, vidit globum Jehu venientis, saw the crowd of Jehu arriving,et ait: Video ego globum.and he said, “I see a crowd.”Dixitque Joram:And Joram said:Tolle currum,“Take a chariot,et mitte in occursum eorum, et dicat vadens:and send to meet them. And those who go should say,Rectene sunt omnia?‘Is everything well?’”
Abiit ergo qui ascenderat currum,Therefore,in occursum ejus,he who had climbed into the chariot went away to meet him,et ait:and he said,Hæc dicit rex:“The king says this:Pacatane sunt omnia?‘Is everything peaceful?’”Dixitque Jehu:And Jehu said:Quid tibi et paci?“What peace is there for you?transi,Pass byet sequere me.and follow me.”Nuntiavit quoque speculator,Also the watchman gave a report, dicens:saying,Venit nuntius ad eos,“The messenger went to them,et non revertitur.but he did not return.”
Misit etiam currum equorum secundum:And then he sent a second chariot of horses.venitque ad eos,And he went to them,et ait:and he said,Hæc dicit rex:“The king says this:Numquid pax est?‘Is there peace?’”Et ait Jehu:And Jehu said:Quid tibi et paci?“What peace is there for you?transi,Pass byet sequere me.and follow me.”
Nuntiavit autem speculator,Then the watchman gave a report, dicens:saying:Venit usque ad eos,“He went all the way to them,et non revertitur:but he did not return.est autem incessus quasi incessus Jehu filii Namsi,But their advance is like the advance of Jehu, the son of Nimshi.præceps enim graditur. For he advances precipitously.”
Et ait Joram:And Joram said,Junge currum.“Yoke the chariot.”Junxeruntque currum ejus,And they yoked his chariot.et egressus est Joram rex Israël,And Joram, the king of Israel, and Ahaziah,et Ochozias rex Juda, the king of Judah, singuli in curribus suis, departed, each in his chariot.egressique sunt in occursum Jehu,And they went out to meet Jehu.et invenerunt eum in agro Naboth Jezrahelitæ.And they met him in the field of Naboth, the Jezreelite.
Cumque vidisset Joram Jehu,And when Joram had seen Jehu, he said, dixit: Pax est,“Is there peace,Jehu?Jehu?”At ille respondit: Quæ pax?And he responded: “What is peace?adhuc fornicationes Jezabel matris tuæ,For still the fornications of your mother, Jezebel,et veneficia ejus multa, vigent.and her many poisons, are thriving.”
Convertit autem Joram manum suam,Then Joram turned his hand, and,et fugiens ait ad Ochoziam:fleeing, he said to Ahaziah,Insidiæ,“Treachery,Ochozia.Ahaziah!”
Porro Jehu tetendit arcum manu,But Jehu bent his bow with his hand,et percussit Joram inter scapulas:and he struck Joram between the shoulders.et egressa est sagitta per cor ejus,And the arrow went through his heart, statimque corruit in curru suo.and immediately he fell in his chariot.
Dixitque Jehu ad Badacer ducem:And Jehu said to Bidkar, his commander:Tolle, projice eum in agro Naboth Jezrahelitæ:“Take and cast him into the field of Naboth, the Jezreelite.memini enim quando ego et tu sedentes in curru sequebamur Achab patrem hujus,For I remember, when you and I, sitting in a chariot, quod Dominus onus hoc levaverit super eum, were following Ahab, this man’s father, that the Lord lifted this burden upon him, dicens:saying:
Si non pro sanguine Naboth,‘Certainly, I will repay you in this field,et pro sanguine filiorum ejus, says the Lord, for the blood of Naboth, quem vidi heri, ait Dominus, and for the blood of his sons, reddam tibi in agro isto, which I saw yesterday, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.’Nunc ergo tolle,Therefore, take him now,et projice eum in agrum juxta verbum Domini.and cast him into the field, in accord with the word of the Lord.”
Ochozias autem rex Juda videns hoc,But Ahaziah, the king of Judah, seeing this, fugit per viam domus horti:fled along the way of the garden house.persecutusque est eum Jehu, et ait:And Jehu pursued him, and he said,Etiam hunc percutite in curru suo.“Strike this one also in his chariot.”Et percusserunt eum in ascensu Gaver,And they struck him on the ascent to Gur,qui est juxta Jeblaam:which is beside Ibleam.qui fugit in Mageddo,But he fled into Megiddo,et mortuus est ibi.and he died there.
Et imposuerunt eum servi ejus super currum suum,And his servants placed him upon his chariot,et tulerunt in Jerusalem:and they took him to Jerusalem.sepelieruntque eum in sepulchro cum patribus suis in civitate David. And they buried him in the sepulcher with his fathers, in the city of David.
Anno undecimo Joram filii Achab,In the eleventh year of Joram, regnavit Ochozias super Judam, the son of Ahab, Ahaziah reigned over Judah.
venitque Jehu in Jezrahel. And Jehu went into Jezreel.Porro Jezabel,But Jezebel, introitu ejus audito, hearing of his arrival, depinxit oculos suos stibio, painted her eyes with cosmetics,et ornavit caput suum, and adorned her head.et respexit per fenestramAnd she watched through a window,
ingredientem Jehu per portam,as Jehu was entering through the gate.et ait:And she said,Numquid pax potest esse Zambri,“Is it possible for there to be peace for Zimri, qui interfecit dominum suum?who killed his lord?”
Levavitque Jehu faciem suam ad fenestram,And Jehu lifted up his face to the window,et ait:and he said,Quæ est ista?“Who is this woman?”et inclinaverunt se ad eum duo vel tres eunuchi. And two or three eunuchs bowed down before him.
At ille dixit eis:And he said to them,Præcipitate eam deorsum:“Throw her down with force.”et præcipitaverunt eam,And they threw her forcefully, aspersusque est sanguine paries, and the wall was splattered with her blood,et equorum ungulæ conculcaverunt eam.and the hoofs of the horses trampled her.
Cumque introgressus esset ut comederet biberetque,And when he had entered, so that he might eat and drink, ait: Ite,he said:et videte maledictam illam,“Go, and see to that cursed woman,et sepelite eam: quia filia regis est.and bury her. For she is the daughter of a king.”
Cumque issent ut sepelirent eam,But when they had gone, so that they might bury her,non invenerunt nisi calvariam, they found nothing but the skull,et pedes, and the feet,et summas manus.and the ends of her hands.
Reversique nuntiaverunt ei.And returning, they reported to him.Et ait Jehu:And Jehu said:Sermo Domini est,“It is the word of the Lord, quem locutus est per servum suum Eliam Thesbiten, which he spoke through his servant, Elijah the Tishbite, saying:dicens: In agro Jezrahel comedent canes carnes Jezabel,‘In the field of Jezreel, the dogs will consume the flesh of Jezebel.
et erunt carnes Jezabel sicut stercus super faciem terræ in agro Jezrahel,And the flesh of Jezebel will be like dung upon the face of the earth, in the field of Jezreel, ita ut prætereuntes dicant:so that those who pass by may say:Hæccine est illa Jezabel? Is this that same Jezebel?’”
