Omnis namque pontifex ex hominibus assumptus,For every high priest,pro hominibus constituitur in iis quæ sunt ad Deum,having been taken from among men,ut offerat dona,is appointed on behalf of men toward the things which pertain to God,et sacrificia pro peccatis:so that he may offer gifts and sacrifices on behalf of sins;
qui condolere possit iis qui ignorant et errant:he is able to commiserate with those who are ignorant and who wander astray,quoniam et ipse circumdatus est infirmitate:because he himself is also encompassed by infirmity.
et propterea debet,And because of this,quemadmodum pro populo,he also must make such offerings for sins even for himself,ita etiam et pro semetipso offerre pro peccatis.in the same manner as for the people.
Nec quisquam sumit sibi honorem,Neither does anyone take up this honor himself,sed qui vocatur a Deo,but rather he who is called by God,tamquam Aaron.just as Aaron was.
Sic et Christus non semetipsum clarificavit ut pontifex fieret:Thus, even Christ did not glorify himself, so as to become High Priest,sed qui locutus est ad eum:but instead, it was God who said to him:Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te.“You are my Son. Today I have begotten you.”
QuemadmodumAnd similarly,et in alio loco dicit:he says in another place:Tu es sacerdos in æternum,“You are a priest forever,secundum ordinem Melchisedech.according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Qui in diebus carnis suæ preces,It is Christ who, in the days of his flesh,supplicationesque ad eum qui possit illum salvum facere a morte cum clamore valido, et lacrimis offerens,with a strong cry and tears, offered prayers and supplications to the One who was able to save him from death,exauditus est pro sua reverentia.and who was heard because of his reverence.
Et quidem cum esset Filius Dei,And although,didicit ex iis,certainly,quæ passus est,he is the Son of God,obedientiam:he learned obedience by the things that he suffered.
et consummatus,And having reached his consummation,factus est omnibus obtemperantibus sibi,he was made, for all who are obedient to him,causa salutis æternæ,the cause of eternal salvation,
appellatus a Deo pontifex juxta ordinem Melchisedech.having been called by God to be the High Priest, according to the order of Melchizedek.
De quo nobis grandis sermo,Our message about him is great,et ininterpretabilis ad dicendum:and difficult to explain when speaking,quoniam imbecilles facti estis ad audiendum.because you have been made feeble when listening.
Etenim cum deberetis magistri esse propter tempus,For even though it is the time when you ought to be teachers,rursum indigetis ut vos doceamini quæ sint elementa exordii sermonum Dei:you are still lacking, so that you must be taught the things that are the basic elements of the Word of God,et facti estis quibus lacte opus sit,and so you have been made like those who are in need of milk,non solido cibo.and not of solid food.
Omnis enim, qui lactis est particeps, expers est sermonis justitiæ:For anyone who is still feeding on milk is still unskillful in the Word of Justice;parvulus enim est.for he is like an infant.
Perfectorum autem est solidus cibus: eorum,But solid food is for those who are mature, for those who,qui pro consuetudine exercitatos habent sensus ad discretionem boni ac mali.by practice, have sharpened their mind, so as to discern good from evil.
